The Galactic Senate is set to meet today, following a turbulent period for two of its member Governments - the Free World's Alliance and the New Republic.

With the two Governments effectively collapsing since the last Galactic Senate meeting, the session is undoubtedly one to watch.

Here at the Hyperlane Herald, we shall provide running coverage and commentary on this historic session.

OOC - I will try to do this like a 'live feed' so I would ask people not to comment on this thread. If your political character has a comment they would like to make to the news, please DM me.

Kashyyyk Senator Aezzairrfhowrrhudrrl has been nominated for a special commendation at the opening of today's Galactic Senate session.

A senior figure in the Senate, Senator Aezz (as he prefers to be known) was a leading member of the Alliance before its dissolution. In the session's opening, the Speaker referred to the Senators 'selfless acts and leadership and his 'devotion to the principles that support this very senate'.

Following this introduction, the Speaker awarded the Senator a Medal of Commendation.

OOC - Post 12

COMMENT: Senate Sessions opens with a self-congratulatory outburst.

In a move that will shock few eager 'Senate watchers', the session has begun with an award for a sitting politician.

With governments collapsing and war raging across the Galaxy, it is hard to argue how a discussion platform meant to avert such occurrences can commend one of its members for partaking in abject failure.

However, once again, the Senate has amazed onlookers by opening up a political debate with a piece to camera - in which it awarded Senator Aezz, a leading member of the now-collapsed Alliance, for his 'service'.

I'm left wondering, 'what services, exactly?'.

The Alliance collapsed; it failed to protect its borders from invaders and delivered this litany of failure under Aezz's watch.

To commend that? Staggering.

New developments live from this historic session of the Galactic Senate today, as the Byblos delegation has issued the following statement in support of Senator Aezz' commendation.

"Despite political unrest, where voting blocks often complain that others don't see the galaxy through their own colored lens, the senator of Kashyyyk is an example of galactic unity.

He could have stayed on his own planet and let the Killiks kill billions of innocent people on other worlds. He could have, like other planets did, see this as an act of war between political factions and attack other planets in an attempt to expand his territory. Instead he chose to act for the benefit of the entire galaxy, regardless of political faction or religious creed.

This action is commendable and he deserved the honor the senate has bestowed upon him.

Byblos, who without the actions of this senator would now speak to you from a ruined planet, congratulates the senator of Kashyyyk and hopes that he may remain a beacon for galactic unity and peace."

Insults have already been traded mere minutes into the opening of this historic session, with Senator Daytonus being ordered to withdraw a cutting remark aimed at ISC President Thorne. In a rare interjection, the Senator from Ploo II aimed at the President, with sources claiming he attacked Thornes's hairstyle.

The outspoken Senator, who has seen numerous allegations of corruption during his tenure, criticised the President, suggesting he might ‘want to apply for a job as a weatherman.’ Senator authorities were quick to interject, reminding Daytonus of his responsibilities as a Senator, and the rules regarding decorum in the House.

COMMENT: Daytonus bizarre attack on President Thorne will no doubt tank his ratings back home.

Outspoken or just plain wrong?

Senator Daytonus has perhaps made one ‘edgy statement’ to many with his latest attack, this time on the famous President of the Independent Systems Consortium. In a bizarre snipe at the populist political figure, Daytonus has taken aim at the man many credit for the destabilisation of the SIth Empire.

Had the Empire not been taken to task by Thorne, many analysts predicted it would have absorbed Daytonus’ homeworld of Ploo II, and seen him quickly deprived of his office.

An office many suggest he has used primarily to enrich himself.

So, has the Pugulist from Ploo II gone one step to far? Polling from the distant moon of Ploo will no doubt tell us soon enough.

President Thorne of the Consortium has leant his voice to the commendation of Senator Aezz'. Drawing particular attention to the Wookiees rousing defence of Corellia, President Thorne described the Senator as 'a friend to the ISC'.

Saying the Senator has gone 'above and beyond' in his efforts to defend Corellian, the President lauded the Kashyyykian Senator in their opening statement to the session.

The intervention has surprised some analysts, primarily due to Senator Aezz' robust opposition to a considerable number of the Consortiums political moves over his long career.

Senator Aezz has taken to the floor now, to accept his commendation and address the statements made by his peers. A senior figure in the Alliance, observers have noted that the Senator still holds considerable influence over the sector he represents, and it's neighbours, despite the Alliance's collapse.

Perhaps owing to his notable work at the battle of Correllia, and other combat zones, early polls indicate he holds considerable popularity in other pockets of the Galaxy as well.

In a humble speech, the Senator stated he feared he was 'unworthy of [the] recognition', before drawing attention to other Senators who had performed brave acts in recent years.

Continuing on his usual theme of galactic unity, the Senator moved on to use the bulk of his speech to draw attention to his belief that the Galaxy is 'stronger when we work together'. He referred to the Killik struggles as being overcome due to 'coordination between multiple governments and independent factions.'

There was some shaking of heads in the chamber when the Senator referred to 'collaboration between the ISC and the Jedi Order' as one of the driving factors behind the defeat of the Killik threat.

Senator Aezz, a supporter of the Jedi Order, made no reference to the Order's religious fanaticism, nor to the high rate of civilian casualties their order has overseen.

And, finally, we're on to the main agenda, with Senator Kang (Byblos, Independent) moving a motion that the Empire and the Consortium should conclude their ongoing conflict.

Beginning by drawing reference back to the Killik struggles and adding her own praise to Senator Aezz, Senator Kang made a solid reference to her planet's newfound independence. Murmurs rumbled around the chamber as she opened her argument concerning a past Senate session in which Byblos co-sponsored a motion by the late-Senator Starros (Lothal) to sanction the Empire.

The motion passed and was repealed soon after, with war breaking out between the Alliance and the Empire.

Byblos itself suffered invasion at the hands of the Empire before the passing of sanctions. Senator Starros, an outspoken critic of the Empire, was killed shortly after the motion passed in a Mandalorian invasion of his home planet, Lothal.

Using Imperial technology during the invasion, Starros' family maintained that the sanctions, had they been upheld and not repealed, would have prevented the invasion.

Senator Kang was known to be a close friend of Senator Starros, so the references to their previous work together come as little surprise.

Her opening remarks on the debate focused briefly on the successful counterattacks against the Empire by the Consortium before drawing focus on the splits between the Sith Order and the Imperial State of late.

It is important to note that the Empire has representation at the Galactic Senate, with 'pods' now filled with Imperials instead of members of the Sith Order.

Senator Kang concluded her opening remarks with a call for a 'new era of peace and stability'.

But whether that is possible remains to be seen.

….

With large swathes of not only neutral but effectively independent territory ‘up for grabs’ across the Galaxy, ambitious warlords are sure to want to make a move. Early estimates suggest that the number of newly independent worlds, previously under the ‘control’ of established Governments, number in the tens of thousands.

Many of these newly independent planets boast impressive strategic resources, which could be used by Imperial, Sith and Independent warlords alike to further their own personal and strategic aims.

Complexity in the political makeup of each region makes future sector alliances, or pats between these planets, almost impossible to predict.

A prime example of the effect of this instability can already be seen in the world of Trandosha, itself within the diplomatic reach of Senator Aezz’ own home of Kashyyyk. Rumours of a coup on the planet have only been heightened by the arrival of the Trandoshan Senator Rodossk, who now styles himself as the ‘Great Khagan’. With the historical animosity between Trandosha and Kashyyyk, onlookers can only speculate as to how Senator Aezz push for peace and stability can be balanced with the warlike stance of the ‘Enclave’ under their new Khagan.

This is the first of what could be many examples of warlords securing power through hostile means in the new fractured Galaxy. How the numerous Imperial commanders, and Sith Lords, each with their own considerable resources, react to the glut of vulnerable planets, remains to be seen.

In a radical turn of events, the Empire has expressed a commitment to 'unity and peace for all galactic citizens.' Distancing itself from the Sith Order, in line with recent political changes within the Empire, Commander Karn of the ISB opened the debate on behalf of the Empire.

A first in Galactic Senate history, the Imperial representative went into shocking detail on the Empire's troubled past with the Sith Order. Suggesting that the 'Imperial people' had suffered under the Sith Order, who had 'stifled protest with lethal force', the ISB commander revealed the brutality of the Sith Order for the first time.

Confirming that the recent upheaval within the Empire had left them at a sizable disadvantage on the galactic stage, Commander Karn condemned the Order, stating that they had left the Empire struggling to 'stand on [its] own two feet'.

The revelations mark a significant deviation from the Empire's standard approach to commenting on internal affairs - which has traditionally been one of 'silence and obfuscation'.

Analysts have been left stunned that the Empire has so openly committed to ending the war with the Consortium, laying the blame for the conflict firmly at the feet of the Sith Order.

Such a narrative change will indeed send shockwaves across the Galactic political community. The hopeful among the onlookers will no doubt be seeking confirmation and assurance from the Empire that this view, espoused by Commander Karn, is one shared by all in the Imperial war-machine.

With the session moving in a seemingly positive direction, Commander Karn and President Thorne agreed on the outset to a need for peace. However the tone in the session has since soured with the intervention of Governor Archer (Consortium, Llanic) who has suggested the changes in the Empire sound like 'a Sith Lord taking their rivals off the board'.

The comment has attracted some hushed condemnation around the Imperial delegation, however the mutterings seemed to quickly die down.

Governor Archer, who represents the planet Llanic, oversees a sizable centre of the Consortium's refugee agency, and counts a sizable number of refugees from the numerous conflicts in recent years as citizens of her world.

She has supported the proposed peace, but with a required addendum that a tribunal be formed, and compensation paid to the citizens Kashyyyk and Firrerre, planets assaulted by Imperial forces.

Furthermore, she has requested that all 'Imperial military personnel, Sith, former Sith, and government officials who were directly involved' in the attacks be labelled as war criminals, and bought to a tribunal.

This is unlikely to smooth over the peace talks, as sizable numbers of current imperial personnel were involved in those attacks - not to mention the logistical difficulty of arranging the arrest of numerous members of the Sith Order.

The Empire has agreed to a tribunal, and the creation of a 'fund to compensate' the victims of the Kasyyyyk and Firrerre attacks.

Commander Karn, the main speaker of the Imperial delegation at this session, confirmed the Empire's position in his response the Senator Archers condemnation of the Imperial regime.

In a move that has stunned observers, the Commander went further, requesting the aid of the Jedi Order in detaining former Empress, Darth Andruil, on her hideaway on Dathomir.

Imperial holonet channels appear to not yet have covered this breaking news story, which marks the latest in a swathe of Imperial policy shifts today.

'Coruscant at least does not have the resources to fix our own problems'.

A stunned silence descended across some of the Senate pods, as the Senator for Coruscant admitted his own planet lacks resources to fix its own problems.

Whilst not elaborating on those issues, the Senator indicated Coruscant needed time to 'heal'.

The mega-city planet, which is widely regarded as the Galactic 'centre', has faced a broad range of issues of late, but the admission of a resource strain by its Senator is sure to shock the markets.

Senator Drast, a cousin of the new Emperor of the former Sith Empire, ruled out supporting a 'wild goose chase' in the hunt of the former Imperial Leader, Empress Andruil.

And we're off with the first agenda item, an address by the Emperor. Quite a lot has happened in Imperial Space since the last session, with the rumoured consolidation of power around the Imperial Council, shored up by the ISB and a large conglomerate known as 'Imperial Czerka'.

This has been a much-anticipated speech by the Emperor, which is understood to set the tone for his reign in the coming years.

Beginning his speech with the customary welcomes and thanks, the Emperor remarked on his track record as a diplomat in his own right. Indeed, the Emperor used to serve as the Grand Moff of the Diplomatic Corp and is well connected here in the Senate owing to his long service.

After discussing his credentials, the Emperor delivered a well-researched and well-scripted speech, distancing himself from 'Sith crimes' under the previous regime. Throughout his speech, he consistently refers to 'peace and prosperity', clearly trying to frame himself as the Emperor set to deliver that promise.

Silence fell across the chamber with the showing of footage from the recent Imperial mission to Dathomir to detain the former Empress, and then focusing on his regime's desire to remain 'dedicated to protect the galaxy from the monsters we know and fear'.

The Emperor referenced the death toll to his armed forces in the Dathomir mission and stated he remains committed to securing 'peace and prosperity' moving forward.
