Days after the tragedy on Ajan Kloss found Maiko's mind wandering. He was still reeling from the death and destruction brought to their temple by the Sith, the Darksiders killing anyone and everyone in their path with wild abandon. The teenager had witnessed the murder of many foundlings, his fellow Padawans, and fully-trained Jedi Knights. The kind of power the Sith exuded that he felt through the Force was terrifying, more so how they used said powers to wreak havoc upon everything they touched.

The horrors and atrocities they committed were forever burned in Maiko's mind. If the Dark Side of the Force could grant the Sith the kind of power that only led to rot and ruin, then he would have none of it. He would rather be a normal person, blissfully ignorant of the raging battle between the Light and the Dark, Peace against War, Jedi versus Sith. He would rather stay with his family back in Sorgan, cut off from the Force (if possible) and unaware of the cries of the loved and the dying, the hopeful and the despairing.

But he was a child of the Force, touched by its warmth and Light. It gave him an opportunity to be useful, a purpose to help those who were in need.

A purpose he would and could now claim with open arms.

With the death of the Togrutan Knight who had taken him to Ajan Kloss, the Council had deemed it just to assign young Maiko a Master. He was grateful for the decree, eager to keep his thoughts away from the younglings he could not save. The Sith attack might have broken his heart but he was a budding healer. The dead were now one with the Force, and he vowed to himself that he would always remember and honor them by using his Force-given powers for the greater good.

To nurture and heal.

Harith. Leela. Joss. Akkran. Master Atuvrak. I won't let you down, I promise.

Dressed in his padawan robes and the grey beanie that was his family's parting gift for him when he left their homeworld, Maiko stood under the trees a few meters away from the temple's entrance, eyes closed as he felt the life thrumming vibrantly around him through the Force.

He was ready to meet his Master, to learn from their teachings and to flourish under their guidance.

Everyone, please watch over me.

The Force worked in mysterious ways. Yes, that did sound wise, something a smart Jedi Knight would say. Jedi Knight Alexandria Thayless Voran stalked the Temple of Yavin-4. Kriff. She felt like a child again. Why was she nervous? She had absolutely no reason to be nervous. Alex had been a Jedi for nearly sixty years. She had served the Light faithfully. This was a new challenge to face head on, not something to fear.

Yet, there was a small pit in her stomach. She had never had a student before. In fact, it was something she had actively avoided. Her previous duties did not lend themselves to teaching. The Order was changing. Failures had pushed all their boundaries. Oren had kindly suggested Alex return to the folds of the Order and teach what she knew. That did not mean she felt comfortable with what was transpiring. Wounds had been ripped open in the Force. The Order grieved and the Lightside wept. They needed to come together. They needed to find their strength.

Alex had been assigned a Padawan, a rare step for the Council. The young Jedi’s Master had fallen in the attacks. They seemed to feel she could aid the young man. She was uncertain. Alex’s feet carried her to the agreed upon meeting place. Pain surfed on waves of the Force. She knew that feeling. Her eyes landed on the young Jedi, quickly scanning over him. Yes…this would not be easy. “Such loss…young one.” Her voice was soft as she spoke, running a hand through her hair. “You should not turn away from your pain.” She reached out a hand to squeeze her new student’s shoulder, her eyes searching his. “You must face it to face the future.” Pain was a part of who they were. A part of who they would become. You could not hide from it.

The Force told him to be patient, that the one who would guide him would soon arrive. Maiko was excited, but apprehension also crept in his heart. What if his new Master did not like him? What if they looked at him to find that he wasn't what they wanted, saw that he wasn't the Padawan they wished to train? What if they rejected him because he was still practically untrained in the ways of the Force?

Brown eyes found a woman, a Jedi Knight, approaching him. Maiko was new to the Jedi temple on Yavin-IV and thus had never seen her before. The Force gave him the much needed nudge to dispel his doubts, to cast away his worries as the Jedi who was to be his new Master came to stand in front of him. Her voice was soft, kind, and it drove away whatever smidge of anxiety he felt.

Maiko blinked away the tears that threatened to form at the very first words she spoke to him. Instead, he focused on remembering the name of his new Master and would give her a resepctful bow in greeting.

"Master Voran," he said shyly, "My name is Maiko Sigur, Master."

He would meet her gaze and nod at her words, grateful for the supportive hand on his shoulder. "I understand, Master. Acknowledging the pain of the tragedy on Ajan Kloss is the first step of finding peace and healing for our Order. It's– I know it's hard, but I will do my best."

Maiko looked down, wiping the tears away before they could fall. There was always time for grieving, he supposed, and time was often kind to those who were gripped by sadness. Such was the case for him who now had a chance to turn the pain of loss into the strength and determination to learn how to use the Force for the greater good.

"I am very honored to meet you and to learn under your tutelage, Master Voran. Please bear with me, Master. I still have much to learn."

Oh dear. She’d made him upset. Alex softened her hard features. Years spent on the Outer Rim had not lent her to face to kindness. Her eyes never left the young man’s. “There is no magical fix…I cannot waive my hand and make it all go away.” She looked down, for a moment, her own sadness pulsing in the Force. “Believe me, I would if I could.” Alex took a step back to briefly run her eyes over Maiko. His life hummed strongly in the Force. Yes, this was right.

“I won’t replace what you have lost, and you should never forget your first Master.” There was no replacing that bond, but you could forage another. “This is a journey we take together.” Alex had never taken to teaching. This was as new for her as it was for Maiko. She would not fail the young Jedi. Too many had already let him now. She quickly turned and waved for Maiko to follow. He should feel his sadness but never dwell on it. “I can’t think in these stuffy Temples.” She gestured all around them. “There is a time and place to learn what the past has to teach us.” Alex turned to give Maiko a large smile.

“That time is not now.” She marched them to the edge of the Temple…right before the Jungle started. The Force sang with life. The jungles of Yavin-IV teemed with it. One deep breath. Yes, here she felt peace. Alex pointed at several large boulders rolled up near a tree. Classic. She reached out an pointed. “Show me what you’ve learned so far.” Alex dove deeply into the Force. The Light swam around her, her mind focused on Maiko. She needed to watch how he maneuvered the Force, how he interacted with the Light.

Maiko understood his new Master's sadness, no matter how brief she had let it made known through the Force. It was a sentiment he wholeheartedly shared, something he always thought about at night. Wouldn't it be nice if, with a simple flick of a hand or a thought, sadness and pain could forever disappear? That no one would have to suffer through death and loss like they did at Ajan Kloss?

The young Padawan mentally shook his head. Death was a natural part of life, an inevitability and – if one was inclined to think – Maker's mysterious gift to all mortal beings. To accept death was to accept loss, and to accept loss was to learn how to let go.

Love, his parents taught him, was not simply about holding on to those one held dear but it was also the selfless act of letting go.

The younglings who looked up to him as an older brother and Master Atuvrak were now one with the Force, Maiko reminded himself. They were with him through the Force, and he with them. The path he took with them might have ended, but with Master Voran he knew that another one had unfolded – a new path he was looking forward to take with her.

"Yes, Master. Together," he told her, an encouraging smile on his face. Smile widening with amusement, but not at his Master's expense, Maiko dutifully followed after her. He had a feeling that she was used to operate under the vast expanse of the skies and never within the corners of 'stuffy temples'. Did Master Voran travel a lot? This was the first time he saw her, after all. Did that mean he would have to go with her offworld?

The prospect made the Padawan nervous but mostly excited.

Maiko gazed at the boulders with wide eyes. Ah, so the learning had once more commenced. With a nod, he focused on one mossy boulder before closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.

Life thrummed all around him, and he could feel them strongly in the Force. Maiko let the Light wash over him, the corners of his lips tugging upward at the feeling of the Light's warm embrace. Brown eyes opened slowly, one hand lifting – palm forward – towards his chosen boulder's direction.

Concentrating on the how the Force wrapped around him, Maiko willed for the boulder to move. One second passed, then two, with nothing happening until–

The boulder rumbled as it scraped against the other larger rocks, trembling just as Maiko did, before it began to float a few inches off the ground under his guidance. Straining, and like any other student who wanted to impress their teacher (Maiko was still young and understandably not immune to that teenage spirit of showing off), he endeavored to lift the boulder higher. It went up another few inches until, his control wavering, it crashed back down with another rumble.

Maiko turned to look at Master Voran, smiling brightly as if the sun had decided to camp on his face. He had never lifted a boulder that high before!

Alex watched closely as Maiko worked. Yes, there was potential there. He was young but full of promise. Such hope brimmed in the young Jedi’s heart. She could work with that. Of course, Maiko reached his limit fairly quickly. Predictable for his age and skills. Alex nodded before reaching out with the Force. Her mind searched for the Light. Her hands at her sides, the Force moved to encircle the boulders. Lift. They rose steadily into the air floating a few feet off the ground before gently settling. She did not so much command the Force as work with it.

“The Force is not a tool, it doesn’t exist to serve out whims.” She spread her mind across the Temple…feeling the Light vibrating within. “It is our ally, and we must treat it as such.” She pointed towards the rocks again. Command the Force and you will find the rock as heavy as if you lifted it with our own two arms.” Alex smiled. “And it was heavy wasn’t it?” She wagged her finger. “Work with the Force and you can accomplish nearly anything.” A small sigh escaped her. “Too many see the Force as merely a tool and are limited by it…even our brothers and sisters fall prey to these limitations.” In the moment she felt suddenly old. “We cannot be the same.” This was a good start but only a start.

Alex started walking towards the jungle again, motion for Maiko to follow. “Come on.” Her mind was flung wide. “Tell me what you feel.” She led them deeper into the jungle. Her eyes flicked back and forth, watching just in case. This close to the Temple they should be safe, but it never hurt to make sure.

Wonder lit up Maiko's eyes when Master Voran herself exhibited her mastery of the Force. Where he struggled to lift a single boulder and sending it crashing on the ground, she sent all of them floating then letting them return to the earth with ease. The Light shone brightly within her, warm and kind as it touched the young Padawan. He wanted to learn how she did it; he wanted to be like her.

"The Force is not a tool, but our ally," he repeated softly, carving the words in his mind with dedicated permanence. He returned her smile, bashful as he nodded in understanding. For someone who seemed so young, he could see that his Master was wise beyond her years. Maiko knew that he would learn a lot from her, and not just about the ways of the Jedi and the Force.

(Sometime in the future, most probably sooner than later, Maiko would learn that his Master was a Morellian, and that she was in no way young by human standards.)

The young Padawan followed after his Master, duteous and keeping close to her while still being mindful about personal spaces. She led him deeper into the jungle and it worried him – but only slightly. Despite only having just met each other, Maiko had already put his full trust and faith in Master Voran. She wouldn't do anything that would harm him like what he would do for her. Birdsong and the sounds of life surrounded them, and Maiko's worry disappeared completely.

"What I feel...?" he muttered to himself as he looked around, taking in the sight of the trees and the birds and insects flitting about in and out of view. Maiko wandered a little away from Master Voran, gaze transfixed on a small patch of white flowers on the ground. He slowly lowered himself on one knee, eyelids falling shut as his hand hovered over one blossom before his fingers touched the soft petals.

Work with the Force and you can accomplish nearly anything.

With that thought in mind, Maiko took the plunge and reached out with his senses through the Force.

"Life," he told his Master, smiling softly. He could feel her through the Force, a beacon of Light that promised healing and wisdom. And he could also feel the jungle itself. "I can feel life all around us, thrumming with vitality and the will to live. There is... serenity, a sense of peace in here. Where one life ends – a dying plant here, some predator capturing it's prey a few yards to my right – another begins. It's... I can feel the cycle, and it feels beautiful, in a poetic sense."

Taking a deep breath, Maiko tried to broaden his reach to the Jedi temple.

"I can... sense people and beings on the Temple. Hope stirs strongly in there, and also... sadness. Loss. Anger. Confusion."

He knew he wasn't the only one who still hadn't moved on from the tragedy on Ajan Kloss. It was a huge blow to their Order, and the deaths of Grandmaster Oota Boan, Master Sada-Nau Tin, and many Jedi, Padawan, and younglings were still fresh in everyone's minds. Maiko himself was still reeling from the experience, and he gathered his thoughts to himself once more before he could drown in the emotions he could feel from the Temple.

The Padawan opened his eyes, gaze finding the flowers as he took in a deep breath. He stood up and turned to face his Master. Maybe it was best to tell her this early in their relationship as master and apprentice what he wanted to learn most and what he wanted to be known for as a future Jedi.

"Master, I wish to learn how to fight to defend the innocent and keep the peace," Maiko said, eyes shining with hope. "But above all, I wish to be a healer."

The Force swelled with life. Peace and harmony swirled around them. A wide smile spread across Alex’s face. She dove deeper into the Force, her mind flitting across Maiko’s. Her smile grew wider. His presence in the Force rang strongly in the Light. Alex felt a measure of pride in her new student as his mind explored the Force. He saw far more than she could have ever expected. “We are broken…hurting.” Alex’s eyes closed for a moment. “But hope runs through it all. The Light uplifts us, young one, and give us that hope.” It was far too easy to forget their strength came from the Force. “The Order needs warriors…heroes.” Too many sought that ideal. “But above all we need healers.”

Alex opened her eyes to look at Maiko again. “This is a truly worthy goal, and I will do everything I can to see you each it.” She kept walking deeper into the jungle. There was more than one reason she had come this far out. Her mind stretched far. Yes, that was what she was waiting for. This far from the Temple the jungle began to reassert its dominance. The creatures of the moon tended to stay away from Temple. The further from the Temple, the more likely they would approach. Her mind touched a swarm of Piranha Beetles, she nudged them just slightly. She would not let any harm purposely come to the beetles or Maiko.

Her lightsaber hilt snapped into her hand. “The jungle can be dangerous.” Alex offered Alex a small smile, she could hear the buzzing of the Piranha Beetles as they began to approach. “A Jedi must always be ready to act…no matter the circumstances and no matter the cost to ourselves.” The buzzing grew ever louder.

He could feel Master Voran's emotions through the Force and it made him smile, the Light and it's warmth bringing comfort and ease on the young Padawan's heart. And he agreed with her sentiment.

For the majority of his childhood, Maiko had always been regaled with tales of the Jedi when his family and community found out about his Force-sensitivity. They would tell him of the Jedi being the keepers of peace, who fought to defend the helpless and uplift the innocent. The Jedi, they said, were fighters, warriors – the heroes the galaxy needed. And while young Maiko had dreamed of becoming a great warrior Jedi who could protect those who couldn't protect themselves, his dreams changed the moment he discovered that he could heal.

From warrior to healer – the transition from one dream to another had been easy for the wide-eyed dreamer Sorgan native.

At her pledge in helping him reach his goal, Maiko gave Master Voran a respectful bow, the smile on his face turning brighter than the sunlight that filtered past the trees' canopies.

"Thank you, Master," he told her gratefully, already looking forward to their journey together as Master and padawan. "I will work hard as your student as well!"

They wandered deeper into the jungle. Maiko focused, drawing on the Force around him to get a feel of the area around them. The place was brimming with life, and with it he could feel a sense of dominance this deep in the jungle and far away from the Temple. Apprehension sparked in the young Padawan's heart but he stood his ground, reaching for the Light and letting it wrap him in warmth and security.

His Master's voice broke through his thoughts, followed by a faint buzzing sound that grew louder with each passing second. Upon his arrival on Yavin-4, Maiko learned that the jungle moon was home to various and interesting kinds of flora and fauna. One Jedi had warned him and a group of younglings not to wander too far into the jungle or they might fall victim to a swarm of carnivorous piranha beetles. The young Padawan had read about them, and an encounter with a swarm typically ended bloody.

Fear flashed in Maiko's mind, his thoughts immediately urging him to find a means of escape. But what about Master Voran? He couldn't leave her here to face the threat alone!

If there's anyone who can survive this encounter, it's her! he reasoned with himself. And you have to trust that she won't let any harm befall you. Think! She won't lead you this far into the jungle just to let you get hurt. "A Jedi must always be ready to act. No matter the circumstances and no matter the cost to ourselves." Heed her words, Maiko. This isn't a test – it's a lesson.

The young Padawan took a fortifying, deep breath in to calm his thoughts. He searched his mind for the things he learned about the piranha beetles and the way the legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker kept them away from the Temple. But a sense of distaste and disorientation were things Maiko couldn't muster, so he opted for the feeling he was drawing for himself to stave off the anxiety and fear.

Maiko closed his eyes and lifted a hand, palm facing forward towards the direction of the buzzing. He remembered Master Atuvrak's words, how a person could magnify one's feelings through the Force and how it could affect other beings.

If you want to be a healer, then you must project calmness to your patients, the Togrutan Jedi once told Maiko during the Padawan's first few days in Ajan Kloss. Once they see and feel that you're calm, they'll be quick to understand you and follow your instructions. You have to be confident, yes. But be calm, young Maiko.

Letting the Light touch him, Maiko would let his mind reach out into the Force and work with it. Through the Force he would project his calmness outwards, letting the emotion touch the approaching swarm of piranha beetles. With the emotion came a command, kind and gentle but urging nonetheless.

Go back to your home, he would tell the swarm. There is no prey here. Fly back home, please. Thank you.

Just because they were non-sentient beings didn't mean that they couldn't be respected.

The hum of the Piranha Beetles grew ever louder. Come on kid. Alex kept her senses spread wide in the Force. Her eyes were locked on Maiko. She wasn’t worried about the beetles. All she cared was how the young Jedi responded. Would he draw his saber? Strike out with the Force? He did neither. Alex was completely caught off guard. Her new student took the unexpected path. He reached out and pushed peace and calm into the Force. Alex could not stop the smile spreading across her face. Perfect. She felt the swarm warm to the touch of the Force. The buzzing grew quieter as the swarm calm. They began to slowly move away from the two Jedi. Ah…not quiet yet.

Alex’s mind reached out lightening fast. She brushed against the presence of one piranha beetles. The Jedi Knight quickly pushed fear into the beetle’s mind. She shivered. Alex disliked pushing thoughts, but this had a purpose. The beetles quickly whipped around, buzzing away from the swarm. It made a beeline for Alex…bursting from the tree. Grin and bear it. The beetle swarmed in, lightly landing on her shoulder it took a painful bite through her robes and into her arm. A grimace quickly appeared on her face. The beetle flew off.

Blood began immediately seeping through her robes. Alex quickly clamped a hand to her arm to staunch the bleeding. She grinned wildly. “You want to be a healer?” Yes, all a very normal way of teaching. “Better start healing.” Alex winked. “Reach out…feel the pain…grab my arm.” She pushed her mind into the Force. “The body wants to be whole and the Light wants to make things as they should be.” She gritted her teeth as the pain spread. “Convince my body to be whole.” Delightful plan Alex.

Eyes still closed, Maiko could feel through the Force that his attempt to drive the piranha beetles was succeeding. The buzzing was starting to quiet down as the swarm flew away. But he didn't stop sending calm and peace through the Force to touch the swarm, not yet, until it was well and truly gone from the vicinity.

A sliver of fear cut through his calm projections, and Maiko's brows furrowed curiously, opening his eyes just in time to see Master Voran getting bitten on the shoulder by one piranha beetle. Pain lanced through the Force and he rushed to his Master's aid, his hands atop hers to help her stem the bleeding.

Had he done something wrong? Why had one piranha beetle attacked his Master?

Maiko filed away these questions for later investigation as one of his hands flew to the nonexistent satchel on his side. He lifted his gaze to look at Master Voran when she spoke, nodding at her words.

"Y-Yes, Master!" the young Padawan responded, fighting off a flinch from appearing on his face when the pain he was feeling through the Force – her pain – started to spread. Maiko took a fortifying breath, gaze falling to the bleeding wound on her shoulder. Pressing his hands on the injury to staunch the bleeding, he drew upon the Force around them and reached for the Light.

While he had been commanding of the Force during his childhood days, he now had Master Voran's teachings to hold on to. Now, he worked with the Force, letting the Light wash over and fill him with warmth and light and the promise of healing. Maiko let the Force guide him, respectfully asking for permission to allow him to heal his Master's wounds – to stop the bleeding, to knit muscle and skin back together, to make her body whole. Sweat began to bead on the Padawan's forehead, his brows furrowing with the effort to mend Master Voran's injury.

Let me heal her; let me make her whole. It was a mantra that played on repeat in Maiko's head as the bleeding would start to slow.

Alex’s vision blurred slightly. Oh, she may have misjudged how deeply the beetle had bitten. That was a lot of blood seeping beneath her fingers. She may have pushed herself a little too far in the interest of high learning. Well, they were close to the Temple she would probably be fine. Alex felt the spike of fear in Maiko before he quickly came rushing over. That was good. He did not want his Master to die from an insect. Maiko’s hand enveloped hers and the Force began to flow. She felt the warmth of the Light wash over her arm. Her skin began to knit itself back together. There was some resistance as the Force began to coax her body to heal. Alex placed her other hand on top of Maiko’s.

She quickly waded into the pool of the Force. She joined her mind with Maiko’s. She spoke into her mind as their presence’s mingled. “Focus…and be whole.” Together the Master and Apprentice worked to heal the piranha beetle bite. As her skin healed, Alex whipped the blood from her hands. She smiled softly again and stood. Kriff. Her legs were a little wobbly. “Extremely well done.” Another good robe ruined. “You have a bright future, I can feel it in the Force, but there is only so much we can do stuck in the Temple.” Frankly, Alex deeply disliked feeling trapped. “I know your pain is fresh, but we cannot stay here.” There was no point wallowing in the sadness. “If you are ready…the galaxy is the single greatest place to learn.” Alex learned everything she knew outside the walls of the stodgy Temple walls.

Sweat started to bead upon his brow as Maiko tended to his Master's wounds, giving his absolute best to focus and guide the Force to mend what was broken.

No, he wasn't guiding the Force. It was the other way around, and Maiko was a mere channel for the Light to make Master Voran's body whole again. He felt her hand rest atop his and the young padawan visibly relaxed when she spoke to him in his mind. Yes, he was not alone – his Master was with him, and the Force. Maiko heeded her words, taking one slow breath in and then out, as he focused on the task at hand.

Maiko felt Master Voran's presence in the Force and how she worked with him in healing the wound she sustained from one of the panicked piranha beetles. Through the Light and warmth of the Force he could feel the last traces of the injury disappearing. He did it, with the help of the Force and his Master. Maiko managed to heal her wound!

The young padawan opened his eyes and was met with the soft smile of his Master. He returned hers with a bright one, and Maiko was quick to offer Master Voran his help as she stood up.

"Thank you, Master," he told her bashfully. "I wouldn't have– I know I would've floundered without your guidance and help."

When she spoke of leaving, Maiko couldn't help but feel a hint of sadness and dread. Yes, he wanted to learn from her. So much. But he still felt apprehensive in leaving the Temple. It had been his home after Ajan Kloss, and he had already made friends here. What would they say if he left? Would they be disappointed? Angry?

No, he assured himself. They'll be happy for you and will support you wholeheartedly, as much as you'd do for them.

And Master Voran was right. If he truly wanted to be a healer, then he couldn't remain stuck within the walls of the Temple. What did his Dad use to tell him? That there's only so much a person could learn if they stay inside the box.

Was he ready to step out of the Temple and travel the galaxy? To be honest the answer was no, but his willingness to learn simply outweighed his apprehension. Smiling at Master Voran, Maiko gave her a respectful half-bow and answered with growing confidence,

"Yes, Master, I am. I look forward to my journey with you!"

Alex ran a pale hand through her auburn hair. She nodded slowly. “Good.” The Jedi Knight began to walk slowly back towards the Temple. Yes, she might regret this particular lesson. “I don’t do well just waiting around and that would not go well for either of us.” She flashed one smile as they walked back. “There is something you must remember, young one.” Her voice became more somber. “The galaxy is changing…you know that better than anyone.” Alex shook her head. “We have not been the example we strive to set. The Sith have reminded us of that failure.” They were getting closer to the Temple again.

“Our journey as Master and student is about more than your education. It is about more than learning fancy saber strikes and specific applications of the Force.” A solemn note rang in her mind. A reminder from the Force she was on the right path. “There is so much more to being a Jedi…our duty…together is to set a better example.” Alex had failed to live up to those ideals. She had failed to be as she was. “We are healers and we will heal the galaxy.” Another ring in her mind. Yes, that was right. “No matter the cost, no matter the danger.” Alex turned to face Maiko.

“This is the path young one and I indent to walk it.” She turned and headed towards the Temple again. “Meet me in the hangar in 2 hours…brining whatever you need.” Alex flashed one more smile. “I don’t know when we will be back.” The Force rang again. She nodded. Yes, this was the path.

Happiness clung to Maiko like a fierce but gentle hug. His footsteps held a certain lightness to them as he followed his new Master back to the temple, elated but still ever so respectful as he listened to her words. The young padawan was quick to catch on her somber tone, and an expression that resembled resignation crossed his face at the mention of the Sith.

He would face the Darksiders someday, that much he knew – and he could only hope that it would come later rather than sooner, where he would be fully trained and equipped to do so. Maiko had witnessed first hand what the Sith were capable of, and he knew that in his current condition he could easily be killed if he ever came to face one.

And as much as the galaxy needed fighters, defenders... the young padawan agreed with Master Voran's words. In the aftermath of their ever growing war with the Sith, who would nurture the galaxy once peace had been achieved? This– This was why he wanted to be a healer, chose the path to nurture rather than to fight. Combat was inevitable, that much he was sure, but Maiko would always be a healer first. He would learn how to fight from his Master, but more importantly he would learn how to heal.

It was the way of life he chose the moment he discovered that the Light of the Force lived within him.

"I will follow you, Master," he vowed to her, determination shining in his eyes. "I will walk this path with you."

They reached the Temple's entrance, and Master Voran gave Maiko her first order. Surprise and sadness crossed the young padawan's face. His footsteps faltered. They were leaving already?

That was... unexpected. His thoughts drifted to the younglings he'd promised to bake cookies for, then to his friends. How could he tell them that he was to depart from the Temple – from Yavin-4 – with his Master?

Maiko turned to face Master Voran and gave her a respectful bow before shuffling off towards his room. It seemed that goodbyes were in order, but hopefully they could still stay for a day or two. He'd hate to leave without a word.
