Hi~! I guess i should preface this with that my name is Sam, and im a long time RPer but first in terms of Star Wars and dipping my toes into forum post style playing! I have been a fan of SW for a long time but i just recently have gained the courage to try and become an player of the universe; Its quite daunting and ive always been so nervous of joining because im afraid of ruining anyone's experience with a wonky character or just not knowing enough, since there is so much content to the story and all. I have tons of questions, and honestly forum RP has always made me super super nervous, and being a shy person already makes it hard for me to even think about just jumping right into something without making sure i don't tread on anyones toes!

My first few questions are in regard to my character, and how i can fit in around here. First i want to say that i am not someone who likes to play overpowered or even strong characters for that matter, but i do want to play as a character who can fight with a lightsaber. I have a few ideas around how that could come about, but i was hoping that i wouldn't have to go through the training IC to learn it; I want my character to be all about the sword-play, weak in everything but speed due to her tiny frame and height alone, and not very adept in anything other then the basic controls of the force. Someone who could be more then vulnerable in combat, maybe a Padawan or Apprentice who excels in assisting with her sword-play rather then being able to full on fight by herself, and has more then enough room to improve slowly and has tons of doubt holding her back from being an outstanding fighter or force user. Im willing to start at the lowest of low ranks, just as long as i can use a lightsaber. Is this possible? Also where should i start as someone who is a bit shy? Thank you for any answers in advance, and please understand im super nervous about all of this and im just really hoping to find a place to let my creativity in my head out as best as i can.

Welcome to the site, Sam!

For starters, if you're looking for a creative outlet, there's nowhere better than right here. This place is full of opportunities for writers of every stripe to get in on the action and have fun doing it.

To get to your question now, yes you can start off as a Padawan who knows some lightsaber combat. You will still have to do some IC grunt work to get better at it though, as Padawans/Acolytes are only permitted to know Shii-Cho and the basics of a second form to start. But I assure you that sounds a lot more daunting than it actually is. In all my time here I still haven't found the Jedi equivalent of this, but since Padawans and Acolytes are of equal standing, you may find this guide helpful in fine-tuning the specifics about your character's fighting styles and Force powers.

Additionally, I'm not sure if you had the opportunity to yet or not, but we have a new timeline coming up here towards the end of this month. You can read more about that in the Timeline Announcements board and get a general feel for what "a new timeline" means, what it's going to entail, and a rough estimate on is ETA.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to send me a PM, or just ask someone for help.

Enjoy your stay.

Hi and welcome! I can't see any problems with playing a character like that. As long as you make her back story reflect her abilities it should be fine. just remember when you do post your character up you need to post a sign-up in whatever faction you plan on joining, unless you on being an independent character, then one of the admins of that faction will look over your character and let you know what's what and let you in and boom you're ready to start rping. You could then post and interest check in the rp ooc area or join any open thread within your faction our the main story. Hope that helps! Also we are enduring into a new time line soon so you might want to check that out as well of you haven't already. If you have any more questions we're here to help!

Edit: Got beat by gam lol...

Thank you all for the welcomes!

Im super okay with the fact that she'd have an understanding of basic lightsaber combat, infact i would be completely okay if my character took longer then usual to learn a second form; My only question now is i guess is should i just wait until the new timeline to create my character full on and play? I've seen alot of posts now saying that things will be archived, so i don't wanna just waste anyone's time or anything since we're so close to a new story and such!

Well as the current rules state you can only have 1 form until you reach knight then you can learn another then at master you can master two and learn a third...I think... as to your other question that's up to you, I think it'd be good to start now just to get your feet wet in a couple of rps so you can see how things work around here and such... don't let the new tl scare you off from starting start few rps :3

Thats fine! I am completely okay with that, so understood! Is there room for improv in moves or do i have to stick to the complete basics of it all? Meaning do i have to learn a new form to do a certain slash? I could see my character doing whatever works without knowing complete styles. Not saying like i could have moves from all Forms or anything like that, but if in a fight she just goes with her gut and doesn't let her fighting style dictate her.

There's tons of room for improv and stuff, I personally feel that's the forms are more of a mindset than an actual style, granted if say your going to be a djem so specialist, I wouldn't expect to see much stabbing as the form focuses more on slashing techniques but we'll also have to see how the new Canon forms play out as the current one are legends now i think...

Hello again, @Sammeister!

You're quite the talkative for a shy person. Nice!

@Gamov and @The Derp of Hooves nailed your answers. So, the only left for me to do is to encourage you to continue posting OOC stuff AND an RP or two.

Per my PM, don't hesitate to come to me if you need anything.

Cheers!

First, welcome to the site! We're always glad to have new members eager and budding with possibilities! Like bright, shiny flowers blossoming, just waiting to be plucked and crushed. No, no, I mean, stay please I like to meet new people!

Lightsaber forms; don't worry about them. I mean, can anyone really write out what the differences between soresu and ataru, then stick to those differences in the heat of combat? No, people will do whatever they can as long as it makes sense. People trained in martial arts understand the nuances better than those who aren't, but really we're all just swinging imaginary swords with the power of miniature suns around in our minds. When it comes time to roleplay battles, I always suggest having enough open space in the room to get up and act the stuff out; you want to make sure your body parts can actually do what you're describing, that you aren't cutting your legs off, and also that what your doing is efficient time-wise compared to other, less flashy moves. It's a great idea to watch youtube videos on various martial arts, from wushu to kendo to fencing to whatever else floats your boat. If you already know a real world sword form, you have an advantage over others, but remember that real world rules don't hold for a play by post roleplay.

You won't have to go through all the training, but I definitely suggest getting your feet wet in a friendly duel rather than a no holds barred melee to the death. Character death can occur on this forum, and it would be a shame to spend so much time designing your first character (your first is always the one you're most invested in) just to watch them die because you over-estimated yourself or under-estimated your opponent. Keep an eye on the timeline changes, also; we're set to start playing in a WHOLE NEW TIMELINE set roughly 1000 years before Episode 4, and that will definitely mean your character will be very different than one designed for the current timeline.
