The Wookiee appreciated his master’s thanks. It wasn’t easy keeping from being howler food. The Wookiee knew that it wasn’t over yet. His master is always goin so he knew that now being at their destination they would be ready to climb.

Then Vayla asked the young padawan what he sees. Wurfuhlla had to use force sight for this next lesson. He closed his eyes and reached out with the force to see what lies inside the Massassi tree. For the first few moments there was nothing.

Then he felt it. The presence of beings in the tree. They were higher up but they were there. Wurfuhlla couldn’t make out what it was but he felt it.

“Higher in the tree. There’s something within. Many things. I don’t know what they are though. Could be anything.”

Wurfuhlla opened his eyes and made contact with the master. He felt they would be in another confrontation in the tree, but hoped otherwise. Dying wasn’t on his agenda for the day.

Vayla nodded at her student’s assessment of what waited ahead. He spoke only a few words but said more than his tongue had. He had only mentioned ‘things in the tree’ which meant that there evidently was no threat waiting for the Jedi between their position and that tree. Granted, the master could reach into the Force for herself to validate her student’s sight, but that felt like cheating as much as it did not. Let him learn by teaching, teach by learning.

“Rodents and beetles,” Vayla shrugged. “Or worse.” She smiled. Time would tell. So the Jedi advanced. They moved together. They moved as one. The unit pushed past tree and brushed past bush, crunched sticks and twigs without fear of being heard and felt a cool breeze against their skin and fur as the wind picked up and at least one Jedi picked up on what came with the wind. It’s waiting...waiting for us…

The corners of Vayla’s lips tugged upward as she reached the great Massassi tree. It was a giant among giants, mighty and magnificent, unmoving and unmoved by the tiny things that stood looking up at the wooden bastion. One hundred feet, three hundred, six hundred feet high. There was no way to see the tip and the very attempt might make someone dizzy if they were not a Jedi Knight or a Jedi Padawan.

The tree’s bark, a vibrant violet, was worn like ancient armor; thick and gnarled but unyielding to time. Vayla found her gaze dancing between the trunk and the branches, up and down, curling her eyes over the golden rays from the luminary high in the sky that suddenly seemed so small compared to down below.

“Are you ready?” The teacher prompted the student. “I know you can climb, Wurfuhlla, but I hope you can climb so high.” She took a step forward and crouched, running her fingers through the blueleaf shrub that grew at the base of the tree. A knife came out to cut off a healthy portion for some healthy tea that the two Jedi would enjoy back at camp when the climb was over. For now, the climb…

Tightening her backpack, Vayla was ready. They would be climbing a tree with long and large branches to support them; this was no mountainside with a rock wall to scale. They had it easier than that but, as Wurfuhlla himself had claimed, they would eventually come across rodents and beetles that would want to eat them. Was her student ready? Vayla hoped he was. She was the leader but, well, he would take the lead, and Vayla would wait for him to do so.

Wurfuhlla and his master made their way to the tree. The Wookiee couldn’t see or smell anything dangerous nearby. They had began preparing for the climb. Once his master was ready he knew it was go time.

The padawan sunk his claws into the tree and began climbing up. He was leading. This was definitely new but it was the way his master would be teaching him. They made it a good length up before bugs began crawling out of holes in the tree. They weren’t enormous but they were considerable threats.

When they packed together it was the real challenge. Wurfuhlla would continue climbing no matter how many were around but he had a lightsaber in one hand. Any bug or other thing that came near him would end up sliced in two. He knew life was the Jedi way but in this case he’s doin population a favor.

And then he felt a bigger presence. A worse, more violent presence. The Wookiee looked back to his master as she was clearing a couple bugs. “There’s something bigger nearby. I can feel it.” He was ultimately looking for help but of course he knew how his master would react.

Many of those bugs were harmless; worms and grubs, ants and centipedes, and not the beetles that posed the carnivorous danger to one Wookiee’s fur and one Pantoran’s skin, and of course the flesh behind either. As the pair of them ascended the massive Massassi tree, Vayla caught onto Wurfuhlla’s sentiments. His open lightsaber was a clue all on its own. Responsibility was a lesson to harbor as much as self-discipline.

“Relax, Wur,” she called beside her student after catching up with ease. “A Jedi should hold compassion for all walks of life, even insects.” Oh, those were easy words, yes, but she inwardly dreaded the arrival of those beetles. Vicious bugs, those beetles.

A few of them just perched on a branch out of nowhere. Vayla stifled a squeal and quickly went to work shooing them away with her own ignited saber. I thought they were higher up!? Well, they probably were, but a scouting force had likely descended the tree to search for food if not contend with the intruders. They, though, just might be the least of the Jedi’s worries.

“Bigger?”
Vayla looked up toward the overgrowth. Above the duo was a world of heights, with branches twisting every which way like intertwined limbs, each one draped in purple like the curtains in a royal court. For all her efforts she could not spy the celadon flower. Not yet.

“Reach out, Wur,”
the master encouraged. Again, as always, she herself could reach out and find their quarry but held back. “What can you feel?” Was it a bigger beetle? The rodents? A bigger rodent? Something worse? Oh, she could find out, but this was her student’s turn and her student’s time. Reach out.

Wurfuhlla looked back up the tree where the presence was felt. And he reached out with the force. Deep into the tree. He could feel the bark, the core wood, and the hollow inside with tunnels large enough to fit people.

“I feel the tree itself, and.. beings. Multiple legs. They’re cold. I think they’re bugs. But.. bigger.”

The Wookiee tried to get clarity through the force but as he was searching he felt a presence right in front of him. “What the” and as soon as the Wookiee spoke a beatle busted out of a hole in the tree and tried grabbing at Wurfuhlla.

“Can I stop choosing life now?” He yelled in his native tongue as he was too focused on not dying to the giant beetle trying to devour him. This was an unusually large beetle. Wurfuhlla let out a force roar towards the beetle in hopes to knock it back and off the tree.

The beetle fell back and off but caught the tree below the Jedi. Now it was below his master. The pair were high enough that a drop would probably kill them. They would have to be cautious when it came to how they defended themselves.

...Bigger? Vayla gulped. That was not good. She was suddenly glad that she wasn’t using her own sense and sight with the Force to discover whatever her student had. He had just then discovered it with his naked eye. The beetle was a wicked thing, with four wings and jagged pincers made all the more prevalent with its abnormal size. It was clearly an elite. It burst forth from the burrow to lash onto a juicy Wookiee.

Vayla shuddered as she watched the hideous creature plummet to a branch further below. These branches were like stairs to the thing though so the pair of Jedi would would have to go. “Go!” The master demanded, bolting both her and him up the limbs of the Massassi tree. She stole a look behind her to find the big beetle rebounding, followed by a swarm of lessers following behind it as they leapt and flew, buzzing with a reckoning toward their prey. “Go go go go go go!”

This was no longer a time to play or leisure as though they were climbing an apple tree in an orchard. Vayla all but scrambled ahead, making sure her Padawan was in tow as she banked on the Force to hop from one branch to the other. Wurfuhlla might even be doing better than his teacher given his racial abilities and his environmental upbringing.

“Oh crud!” Vayla exclaimed as she looked above to spot another gathering gazing back at her. These shapes were also small but also bigger, about the size of monkeys, though with sharper and larger teeth and a whole lot more attitude. The rodents would attack the beetles, the beetles would attack the rodents, and both the rodents and the beetles would attack the Jedi. We’re about to become a Jedi sandwich.

Vayla would have to excuse herself of that horrible pun later. For now, she had a Knight and a Padawan to preserve alive. “Quickly!” She hastened up the Massassi, hoping she had not missed a flower. The rodents above were cutting toward them like nothing. “Force push!” With that, she thrust her hand forth and hoped that Wur would join her in blasting those rodents from the branches.

Wurfuhlla was focusing on try to get to a solid surface. But before he could get close to the branch he heard his master yell to him “Force Push” and so of course the padawan looked to the gathering of creatures and complied.

“Gr-r-r-a-a-a-rrrr-g-a-r-agh!!!”

Wurfuhlla let out a thunderous roar backed by the force. With the additional force push by his master, not only did the creatures get blown of the branch but the branch itself broke and began to fall off the tree swiftly but slowly at the same time.

It was a job well done and Wurfuhlla was distracted by the sight of the falling branch. In his distracted moment a rodent of some sort jumped onto his back. He couldn’t reach it without letting go of the tree. He didn’t plan on falling to his death though.

“Master! A hand?” Wurfuhlla let out but it was a decision his master would have to make as the large beetle below was climbing up towards her. Would she fight off the giant beetle and let Wurfuhlla figure his life out or would she help her padawan in a time of need and risk a beetles attack?

The Wookiee’s roar was mighty. Vayla had heard it before but somehow it sounded even more powerful in that moment. It tore across the bark, barked between the wind, amplified by her own blast coming from a hand instead of a throat. The rodents above them did not stand a chance as they screeched while flying from the tree with some of the tree’s own limbs.

Before Vayla could congratulate her Padawan once again, she heard a distinct hiss! come from below and turned to glimpse the big beetle getting closer. The bug really had it in for the Jedi. “Please stop bugging me!” Vayla yelped while continuing to climb now that the rodents were gone. There might be reinforcements further up but there was one relentless rodent more worrisome just then. The Knight watched as it latched onto Wur’s back like a Pantoran.

“Oh bugger!” Vayla hissed as she weighed her options in a heartbeat. “Hold on, Wur!” With that, she waited for the next instant as the beetle pounced toward her face (which was locked in a grimace) and redirected the bug’s momentum with another tug of the Force. The beetle instead went flying straight for the rodent piggybacking on Wurfuhlla and knocked off. Then the two creatures were locked in an airborne embrace as they began to rip each other apart. Even better, the queen beetle’s minions had followed it the whole way, removing the threats from the tree at least for now.

Hopefully the student had obeyed the master’s command to hold on. His grip on the tree would have ensured that he would not have been swept away with the rodent and the beetle. Otherwise his master would have had to call upon the Force again to bring him back to safety. Either way, the two Jedi had a moment of respite as they joined each other on the same branch.

“You okay?” Vayla assessed. Hopefully the Wookiee’s back had not been scratched too much. “I brought plenty of first-aid if you need it!” Whether treatment was performed or not, Vayla took another look upward. There was still a ways to go depending on where a celadon flower was but she could make out what looked like...Huh? "Um, Wur..." She pointed. "...Is...is that...a hammock?"

Finally, that rodent was off his back. He couldn’t see any scratches hopefully his master was good enough to tend to them. She was ready to make sure he wasn’t hurt. Luckily the Wookiee had stayed on the tree and made it to a branch.

“I’ll be alright.” He said to his master as she approached asking if his health.

Wurfuhlla was ready to just get the flower and go but he hadn’t seen one the whole way up. Nor did he see one anywhere on the branch he’s on. He had turned around to allow the Jedi to help him with his injuries.

As he was sitting in silence for only a moment and then he heard his name. “Yes master?” He replied. And when she mentioned a hammock he looked to where she was pointing. And in fact it looked like a hammock of some sort. “I call it.” Wurfuhlla said lightly to his master for a bit of a comical relief. “Perhaps we should figure out why it’s there?” Wurfuhlla asked.

Vayla couldn’t help but chuckle at Wur’s comment about ‘calling it’ as though calling shotgun in a speeder. He may or may not have sensed it in that moment but his teacher was rather delighted to see her student express confidence via humor, and humor via confidence.

It mattered right now more than he might know. Jedi needed to be in control of the moment, of themselves, and some resorted to finding the humor in any given situation as much as others found the bright side of a shadow. Sometimes it was a bit of both. It was for Vayla.

His next words posed the million credit question that she was no less pleased to hear. Quite right, if there was a hammock halfway up this Massassi tree then someone had to have put it there. They did not quite craft themselves. “Agreed,” Vayla nodded simply. “Whoever put it up may or may not still be around to tell us about it. Though…”

Trailing off, she searched her gaze through the branches beside the hammock and beyond it, and it might be a dismissive feeling but perhaps she would be proven right in her assessment. “...Whoever put it up was probably looking for the same flower we are...and I’ll take that as a good sign!”

At that, she flicked a hand across Wur’s shoulder to indicate his coming along as she climbed the tree. They reached the hammock in no time. It was fastened between two long, thick branches, the body dangling in midair but with as much confidence as one Padawan had conveyed; the rope would not be untying itself anytime soon.

The hammock did look a tad weathered, however, and there was no trace of occupation that Vayla could see with the naked eye. There was, yet, a thermos resting on a branch beside the hammock.

“Hypothesis?” Vayla inquired of Wurfuhlla, crossing her arms like a teacher in a classroom who knew how to find the answer but wanted her students to do so for themselves.

As the pair had made their way to the hammock Wurfuhlla was growing more curious as to why it’s this high in the air. It was unusual to say the least. Could another person really be in search of this flower? The Wookiee thought it was just his master and he looking for this flower.

Once they arrived at the hammock, Wurfuhlla began sniffing to smell anything unusual but not anything in particular came to his nose. And when his master asked his hypothesis, he could respond with “Well.. it’s been used for a while. That or it’s just say here a while. Either way it is proof someone was or is up here. If I had to guess they were going up. Allow me to use force sight a moment.”

Wurfuhlla reached out through the force to see if there was someone else with them. Unfortunately there was no sign of a presence as far as sentient beings. “There is no person up here, at least from what I can tell. Perhaps they’re able to hide their presence.”

Wurfuhlla looked to his master after letting go of the force and made eye contact saying “Well if they are up here we might find out.” Wurfuhlla laid onto the hammock and smiled to his master “We can handle it.”

Vayla patiently awaited her Padawan to engage in sighting with the Force, resisting the urge to grin and settling for one corner of her lips tugging upward. A teacher should always be pleased when their student showed promise, after all. It was no simple ‘look’ on the Wookiee’s part; he had astutely deduced that if the hammock was not simply some discarded relic but was the property of an owner still in the area then their presence could be concealed. And who is capable of that?

“Indeed, Wur, finding out is exa—” She blinked. Okay, so, she had not quite expected her Padawan to be so serious about climbing into the hammock dangling over nothing while they had a tree to climb. Was this a time to rest? Had Vayla missed something on the way up? Did the rodents and the beetles take it out of the teenager? Was he really that tired? Am I?

Sighing, Vayla retrieved the thermos from the branch and opened it to take a sniff. It was definitely tea but hard to tell if it was supposed to be cold tea this whole time or hot tea that had cooled down. The aroma was pleasant, earthy, but she thought better of sipping it. Instead, she traded it for a flask of water from her pack and offered the same to Wur before squatting against the tree.

“You’re performing splendidly, by the way,” she nodded with a wink. “So far, at least... I was considering not telling you what about this celadon flower until we retrieve it, but…” She stole a look above them but saw no gray-green sticking out in a mass of purple. Nor a hermit. “...Well, suffice to say that it is a sacred thing and means a lot to us Jedi even if you have never heard of it…”

After a satisfying but modest guzzle from her drink, Vayla licked her lips before parting them. “Anyway, since we’re taking this little ‘break’ you began in that hammock of yours, is there anything you wish to ask me? Tell me? Anything on your mind?” There might have been little and less but the Knight valued freedom of speech and wanted her students to know that she was willing to listen to theirs.

As Wurfuhlla laid in his hammock, yes the Wookiee laid claim and that stays true, he looked out at the scenery of the jungle. It was definitely different. But still made him feel at home. It was a soothing feeling. Touching, relaxing, memorable even.

When he heard his master speak he opened his ears to her without actually looking towards her as his eyes were glued to the sights. He heard praise from her and he allotted a smile. Then she asked if he had questions. Well of course. Why would a padawan not have questions?

“Well I suppose I do have a question or two. But I’ll start with one. I’ve been wondering.. what was it like on Pantora? Was it beautiful? Would I like it? I wonder to myself what all the other planets are like. Cause at night when I look to the sky and I see the stars I can’t help but see beauty. And I only hope that the other planets have that same beauty to them.”

The Wookiee was definitely a dreamer. There was no doubt about that. He couldn’t imagine himself not wanting to visit every planet. He actually made an internal vow to visit every planet he can before he fades from the galaxy.

“I’m sorry, I rambled. It’s just a topic I love.”

Wurfuhlla broke his gaze on the sights and looked to where his master sat. And he smiled. He was enjoying his time out here with his master. Granted they were attacked just moments before, but he felt almost at home.

Vayla leaned back against the great tree with a deep breath, slow and steady, tasting jungle air as a breeze tickled her ears and ruffled her hair. It felt like a touch, a caress, an embrace not from mere nature or the Force itself but simply from peace. Had she not earned it? Had not both of them? Surely we have...

It was odd, perhaps, that such a simple question as what her homeworld was like should drift her thoughts away like a leaf in the wind. Her mind and heart were already trying to escape back home. Back to the Mirana farmstead… Back to my family…

“Pantora is…” Vayla hesitated. Wurfuhlla, it seemed, was no less of a dreamer. “...Beautiful… Amid the cities, fields of red grass stretch over the fringes of silvery marshes, peppered with hills like tides in a sea… Highlands, flatlands, wetlands—all the land is a part of Pantora and so a part of a Pantoran… I was proud to grow up in a family that cultivated that land...”

She took another sip to wet her mouth before finding her Padawan’s gaze. “My homeworld is a moon orbiting the much colder Orto Plutonia but those marshes are not made of humidity.” She smiled back. “Still, I think you would like it, Wur. Perhaps we will visit one day. Sounds like you enjoy a bit of exploration, eh? The stars are what brought me out of Pantora…” Vayla stole a look toward the clouds beyond the branches, knowing those stars were hiding behind them. “Because that beauty needs to be preserved…protected...and that is my promise.”

It was nice. Being there relaxed and enjoying the imagination of his mind as his master described her home world. He definitely had an idea of what he was looking at but his imagination could never do justice to the lands itself.

“I would love to take a visit. There, and anywhere honestly. I would like to visit all planets, and their moons.”

He then decided to go ahead make his way out of the hammock and look to his master. Although he wanted to sit and relax longer, possibly even sleep, he knew that there was a goal to reach. Whether or not another person was up here.

“Let us go master. We should find that flower that’s green and purple.”

The Wookiee walked to the main portion of the tree and let his claws extend from his fingers and sunk them into the trees base. Then the climbing began once again. It was only a matter of time before they made it as high up as they could.

“Just green,” Vayla humorously corrected. “That’s what makes it stand out against the purple!” With one last wink she secured her pack and began to navigate beside her disciple. Wurfuhlla had a rather nifty means of climbing the tree with his natural extremities, the claws serving in place of climbing spikes, but his partner had plenty of branches to bounce between. Her struggle was that they were more spaced out at this section of the trunk so Wur began to gain ahead. Not a race, Vay… She breathed in some more of that jungle air. If it is, don’t just let him win—let him win on his own.

Some time later and the pair of Knight and Padawan were a quarter from reaching the top of the Massassi. The sun was still out—they had not been climbing for hours upon hours or such—but time had certainly not stood still. Vayla was looking forward to returning to camp for a much needed meal. She perched herself upon another large branch as she thought about it, taking a moment to orient herself. Then she heard it. It was a call; not the screech of a rodent or a buzz of a beetle but the voice of a man.

“WHOZITWHAT’STHAT— Oh.”

A figure emerged from behind the great tree just then, appearing on a branch of his own with a branch in his hand that looked more like a great gnarled staff. Is that… Vayla blinked, hand on hilt clipped to belt, a tad startled. ...A shillelagh..?

The man was an old man, quite obviously so given his hunched posture and great white beard that dangled near his belly. He was donned in some intricate amalgamation of a weathered grey robe with a green-brown vine for a belt. From his ‘shillelagh’ dangled a formidable collection of feathers, pebbles, twigs and . . . Is that...a dead...spider..?

“Yern’t gonna hurt me, are ye?” The old man spoke with an old man’s speech, blinking wildly between Pantoran and Wookiee. “I...I...I wanna take a nap in my hammock first...heheh…”

This was interesting. Wurfuhlla never met a shillelagh before. Perhaps this adventure was worth it. But the old guy wanted to go nap in the hammock. And well Wurfuhlla liked it too much number one. Number two he would ask the man some questions.

Using the force he manipulated his vocal chords to speak to the man in the common tongue.

“Before you go I need to ask a few things.”

The old man just stopped and and stared at the Wookiee in disbelief.

“Sir, have you seen a significantly different flower up here? It’s green.”

Still stunned silence.

Wurfuhlla grew tired of being patient and looked to his master for help. The padawan knew that he would only break the man’s mind if he spoke more. This immediately made the Wookiee feel that hope is lost for lesser minds.

Unlike Wurfuhlla, Vayla had indeed met a shillelagh before. It was less of a person and more of a thing; a walking stick that doubled as a club or cudgel, to be precise, with quite some polish to it. This particular shillelagh? Quite a shillelagh…

Catching onto her Padawan’s impatience, Vayla first shot him a reassuring look that functioned as much to remind him of his lessons before he had ever sampled her own. Then she looked at the old man who just may be more than a mere old man.

“Flower?” The old man stroked his beard in thought. “Hrrrrrmmm hmmmm-humm-ho-ho!-hmmm-hemmm-hoo-hoo!-hrrmm…”

This immediately made the Pantoran feel that hope is lost for lesser minds. It was all Vayla could do to blink.

“Say eheh yer talkin’ aboot the thingy-magingy with the flippity-frippery laced in them’s um-hmm-uhh what’sit-what’sit OH”
At that, he clutched his hip with his free hand. “I FERGOT MAH LEAF-RUB THIS MORNIN’ ohhhh gonna leave a bite HEHEHEHEHHH”

At that, Vayla gulped. She looked at Wur as if pleading for the student to teach the teacher a lesson in understanding but he appeared just as lost.

“Ehhhmmmmm excuse me, sir…” The Knight extended as comforting a hand and smile as she dared. “...The flower my Padawan is—”

“PADDYWAN!?”
The old man snorted. There was a distinct bubble of snot in one nostril before it disappeared. “Why didn’tcha say so, woman!? Ya must be lookin' fer the celadon flower up yonder, eheh! And ya Jedi are talkin’ to Jedi Master Herdbur, hurr-hurr!” He raised his shillelagh up high in both hands just then, balance perfect upon the branch, though Vayla wondered if the balance of his sanity was quite something else.

Master? Oh great. Another unexpected surprise today. Things keep gettin better and better. At least now Wirfuhlla could tell this was just a test. Or he hoped at least.

“Well Master I do apologize for the confusion but we really do need the location of this flower. It’s a bit a goal for the day.” The Wookiee hoped the man would stand in silence again.

“Y’knows.. Ye relly need’n dis flowr da bad, aye can giv’ye one fer sum foods.”

Great now Wurfuhlla had to give up some food just to get this flower he’s never seen. But of course the padawan agreed. The Wookiee was a skilled huntsman that it would t take long to make of for the snake he had in his bag. After giving the old man or well Jedi Master the food he received a green flower of sorts. Wurfuhlla believes it might be right, but he called his master over to look at it. He figured she had better knowledge of the flower than he.

“Ahright bye now!” The man called out as he left, which was a blessing to Laren’s ears.

“W-Wait!”
Vayla protested while she clutched the ‘flower’ in her hand. Yet, as quick as the wind, Master Herdbur went skipping away with an undeniable “Hehehehehhh!” in his gait. “...I…” She stood blinking down at that which her Padawan had given her by extension of the ‘Jedi Master’. “...It’s…” She held it up to Wurfuhlla with a frown. “...It’s a blade of grass with a wad of moss fastened to it, Wur…”

Not quite a celadon flower by any remote possibility but she gifted it back to her student all the same. This would mark a very valuable lesson for him: Patience. Impatience led to hasty assumptions and being proven wrong and in turn disappointed. Nasty business, impatience, and hopefully it would not get the better of him.

“Oh well…” Vayla sighed. She had wanted ask the old man some more questions but Wur had given him exactly what he wanted and that was that. So, if the pair of Jedi had any quick and easy hope of catching their floral quarry with a shortcut, that shortcut had just disappeared behind the tree without a trace. It was known. Vayla had rounded the trunk to find not a hollow. He’s simply...gone…

“Up we go…” The Knight expressed to her climbing partner with the hint of a scowl. “The search continues, Wur, so please do lead the way…”
