A History of Commerce

HuttCrestbyAdena.png

Thousands of years ago, according to an old Hutt legend, the Hutt Empire was formed on the planet Varl in the Outer Rim Territories. Varl orbited two stars, Evona and Ardos, which were said to have been venerated as gods by the Hutts. Evona was eventually consumed by a black hole and, in a fit of fury, Ardos expelled its gaseous outer layers and destroyed all of the planets in the star system. This was all said to have happened around the same time as the formation of the Republic.

Somehow, however, Varl survived, but it was rendered uninhabitable. Our ancient forefathers resettled their colony on what is now Nal Hutta, and believed that by surviving the cataclysm they had achieved a status of near-godhood. They became an imperial power based on economic conquest, starting to take in numerous crime syndicates across the Outer Rim as parts of their own Empire. We owe our current power and strength to their brilliant actions, and we’ve come to regard this economic control as being far more important than political or military gains. We have no interest in such things, but we will use it to achieve commercial conquest.

There were some exceptions to this rule of our people. During the war with Xim the Despot, Xim attempted to wipe out our empire and rule the Si’Klaata Cluster. Our genius ancestors, however, saw fit to make a pact with the Nikto, Klatooinian, and Vodran, and this new slave army allowed us to defeat Xim during the Third Battle of Vontor. Following the battle, we signed the Treaty of Vontor with our new subjects, declaring us the eternal overlords of them and the other species of the Si’Klaata Cluster. We came to regard all of the Outer Rim as our subjects soon enough.

A millennia after the war with Xim, we found ourselves as pawns in a conflict of a galactic government called the Galactic Republic. During the Tionese War, the Republic won their victory against the Honorable Union of Desevro & Tion, one of the states that rose from the ashes of Xim’s empire. The Republic used secret agents to stir up trouble in our territory, worsening tensions we had with the Tionese. We were exploited, and it was an unforgivable atrocity, but we moved forward with our own goals.

In the thousands of years that followed, we consolidated our commercial superiority over the entirety of the Outer Rim, annexing virtually all crime syndicates that existed during the times. Those that did not comply were branded enemies and dealt with...as we deemed necessary. One peculiar species that we encountered was the Taung race, a species of warriors who believed that honor and glory would secure them a place in the afterlife. We convinced them to join us so they could fight against the criminal syndicates, although we used what we thought was the false prospect of taking on the Republic to goad them into serving us. We improved their technology, and they were ready for any fight that came their way.

Even with the Taungs, we faced very few legitimate threats, and enjoyed our rule throughout the Outer Rim. Some wanted greater commercial conquest, but, for that time, the majority was satisfied with what we had. If it was not broke, there was no sense trying to fix it.

Then the Republic got involved.

After their war with the Alsakans, they decided that staying between the Core Worlds and the Expansion Region just was not good enough for them. They moved into the Mid Rim, growing ever closer to our border, and we knew that they were going to try and invade us. It was painfully obvious, as we told them to leave the border worlds and yet they refused. We attempted to hold a diplomatic summit on Nal Hutta, but the arrogant Republic did not allow us to make any progress so they were sent away.

Finally, after many years, war broke out between us. Analysts claim that no one knows who fired the first shots, but we know that they did. It is as clear as the Nal Hutta skies are not. It was then that we realized that if we did go against our normal beliefs and fight the Republic, we could gain control of their commerce, and thus control of commerce in virtually the entire galaxy. Our Taung soldiers and our army is strong, and we are ready to strike at the enemy. If our victory during the first battle said anything, it reinforced our core belief.

"Greed is good," as Gorrbag the Hutt said.
