HISTORY OF THE MATUKAI
[fancybox2].[/fancybox2]

The Order of Matukai has been practiced for thousands of years, with its origins dating back even to before the Old Sith Wars. Roughly five thousand years ago, during the anarchy of the Great Hyperspace War, the Matukai saw their foundation on the desert world of Karvoss, where a Humanfemale named Vashti Matukai realized her own Force-sensitivity while practicing meditative martial arts. In that era of the Galactic Republic, the Old Jedi Order had yet to establish the more iconic practice of collecting and isolating Force-sensitive children shortly after birth, which only became an instituted practice after the Ruusan Reformation. Further, because the Jedi Order held vastness in numbers, the Jedi High Council felt secure enough to allow the independent existence of Force-using organizations, although only so long as they did not engage in practices tethered to the Dark Side of the Force.

Consequently, Vashti Matukai was able to mature on her own, and without the direction of the Jedi Order to impose the development of her philosophies and Force abilities, Vashti was able to harness the power of the Force in a way unlike the majority of the Jedi Knights. Over time, Vashti Matukai became a master of her own craft, and began teaching other willing Force-sensitive or even Force-attuned students in her ways. In turn, those taught by Vashti would pass on her knowledge to the next generation. For most of their early history, the followers of Vashti Matukai were unnamed, as Vashti herself cared little for formal titles or names. Following her death, however, her eldest disciples converged and eventually settled on naming themselves after their instructor; hence, the Order of Matukai was born.

The Matukai remained galactically insignificant for most of their order's history, particularly in the wake of the catastrophic Sith Wars that followed. The chief reason for this was that the Twilight Schism, a civil war amongst two Matukai factions that had formulated at some point during the Old Sith Wars. The first were the Purists, who were Matukai that believed they were deviating from the original teachings and philosophies of Vashti herself. The second were the Novus, who believed that the Matukai had to adapt and evolve past the teachings of Vashti in order to continue to progress. Fundamentally, however, the Twilight Schism was a divide between the sides of the Force; the Purists utilized the Light Side of the Force, whereas the Novus harnessed the Dark Side, seeing it as the evolution of the "old Force" they had been taught to use.

The Twilight Schism was not a massive battle, but was a series of skirmishes and conflicts fought over the course of nearly a century. Eventually, a final battle, known as the Battle of the Black Mountain, saw the ultimate triumph of the Purists over the Novus, the latter of which had already begun to turn upon themselves. The Matukai again became one people and the concluded war was named the Twilight Schism, as it was a war of the divide between the Ashla and the Bogan. With the Force in constant fluctuation between Darkness and Light, the Matukai believed that staying in a singular location, especially within the Core Worlds, rendered them too susceptible to corruption from the Dark Side. Instead of being bound together on a single world, the Force would provide their tether, and the Matukai themselves would wander the stars as nomads, passing on what they had learned to all their successive generations. Only a very small number of the Matukai, such as the Disciple youths and the Elders who would look after them, would remain on Karvoss.

The growth of the Matukai was slow and following the Twilight Schism, there number of Matukai seldom exceeded fifty or sixty members. However, their productions became well known among some of the galaxy's Force-sensitive groups, such as the Zeison Sha, the Baran Do, and the Jal Shey. Eventually, even the Jedi Order recognized the Matukai tradition as worthy of attention. In the year 580 BBY, the Jedi Knights dispatched a delegation to initiate a conference to discuss an affiliation between the Jedi Order and the Order of Matukai, led by the Jedi Master Bodo Baas. Master Baas sought out one of the Matukai Elder named Mendor Typhoons, who with two of his apprentices, had fought off a massive pirate raid over Ord Radama, and arranged a meeting between the two in orbit over the planet.

Whatever optimism the Jedi Order had concerning a joining between the Jedi and the Matukai were ultimately expunged, as Typhoons indicated to the Jedi that the Matukai warriors found Jedi training and philosophy elitist and ineffectual. Thus repulsed, Bodo Baas realized the Matukai had no interest in allying with the Jedi Order. Nonetheless, Baas had recommended to his superiors that the Matukai be allowed to exist autonomously. The Matukai were among the few Force orders that inherently aligned themselves with the Light over the Darkness, and most of their members were individuals who would not have been picked for Jedi training in the first place.

Hence, the Order of Matukai existed separately from the Jedi, and did so for virtually all of their existence. Conflict between the two orders was virtually non-existent, although at least one confrontation was known to have occurred. Whether in hostility or in the nature of sparring, a Jedi Master by the name of Thame Cerulian once engaged one in hand-to-hand combat with a Matukai Savant, only to afterward commented that he never wished to do so again.

Over the thousands of years, the Matukai eventually neared several hundred members, although their very existence was nearly extinguished with the rise of the first Galactic Empire. In the wake of the Great Jedi Purge, the Matukai were likewise hunted down by Imperial Inquisitors as one of the first organizations that the Empire targeted and attacked. Nearly all of the Matukai were captured and executed, and the Order of Matukai for all intents and purposes collapsed. However, a few members of the Matukai managed to escaped the reach of the Empire and acquired refuge by going into hiding. Over time, however, the Matukai again became active and those survivors continued the tradition, passing it down to their apprentices.

By the time the old Galactic Empire fell and the New Jedi Order came into being, some of the members of the revived Order of Matukai considered the current incarnation of the Jedi to be less strict and dogmatic than the previous order, and chose to join the new Jedi Praxeum. That it was organized by the legendary war hero and Jedi Master, Luke Skywalker, also drew some among the Matukai to the Jedi Order. However, the vast majority of the Matukai chose to still maintain their own ways. Eventually, the Order of Matukai replenished their numbers, reaching roughly one hundred active members. When the Yuuzhan Vong assaulted the entire galaxy, some among the Matukai fell at the hands of the Force-absent invaders. However, the abilities of the Matukai proved to be particularly potent against the Yuuzhan Vong, and their membership was widespread enough that their organization endured the onslaught of the war.

By the time the New Sith Imperium took hold of the galaxy, the Matukai again were beneath the notice of the galactic affairs, with their relatively few numbers proving to have been a strength against those that targeted groups that wield the Force.
