I was having this conversation with Bac on MSN...

How successful do you believe the SWRP is as a website?

Never played on a forum with 75+ active members, I say its pretty damn good. Plus the members are goofy and cool.

I would imagine it depended on what you define a success to be? Have we ever concretely finished a timeline? I do not believe we have. But every day Rping occurs, and new members join, so we are thriving, and are a success in terms of not failing like many others :p

We are more successful than we were a year or so ago, by far. For awhile, it seemed the SWRP was going on a downfall, but when I returned, it seems it is now thriving more than ever!

I'd say great success. Good job to the admins who stuck with it since it started.

Lol I dunno, I've been around really. I decided to come back under a new account because I thought it'd be fun to start from square one. Not to mention I lost my password for my old one. :(

I was hoping people would catch my use of nicknames such as "Bac" and "Kurt", guess not. Not to mention in the Madagascarian empire thread I have a War Admiral Barrill or whatever, hehe.

Ask an admin, they can recover your account.

Ehh, I like my character Durane. I'd have to make a new character anyways if I were to go back to my old account, for Malak was in the old timeline.

But if an Admin wanted to change my amount of posts to what I had on my old account, that's close enough to getting my old account back for me.

Could just use your new Durane character on your old account.

Oh shit, it's Barrill! Long time, no see!

As for the SWRP, overall it is a great site, but by no means do I think it is perfect.

It has always had dedicated staff members who sacrifice a lot of time and talent to keep the site running. It has also always had a good mix of talented, veteran RPers and fresh newbies to keep the role play at a high standard of writing with new ideas rolling in all the time. The people here are very sociable and there's always lots of topics in the OOC. I've always enjoyed myself here and I know I'm not the only one who can't ever seem to leave here, at least not for too long...

The only problem I have with the site is the roleplaying itself. It's my opinion that the site's role playing has needed a definite focus. RPing, in my opinion, should either be A) About doing whatever you can to perpetuate your character and further your characters goals or B) to write a good story with your fellow RPers.

In style A, the roleplay plays out more like a text-based action RPG than anything. You work to develop your character, make him stronger, and help him and his teammates accomplish their goals against other RPers. In this sort of roleplay, battle should be at a premium and I find that the commeraderie and relationships between allied characters is higher. I think this is more like the sort of roleplay we had set up at LucasArts and at Cyril's site (so long ago).

In style B, it's all about the joy of simply writing something interesting. There are no metagame "goals" like winning your battle or staying alive. It's just about telling a story with friends that you could never come up with on your own and sharing that experience. Seeing how the plot plays out in this huge network or stories is all part of the experience as well. A character of yours dying in some brilliant piece of writing is just as valuable or rewarding as killing your most powerful and hated enemy. There are no "teams" persay, only the "team" of everyone trying to write the best composite story possible, made up of individual RPs, character arcs that stretch over those RPs, and the entire story arc itself.

I don't think either of these styles is superior to the other, it's rather a matter of taste. I happen to think that both can be very entertaining when done correctly, because I've been a part of both when they've worked correctly (And I'm not talking about LA and Cyril's site here because, fun as they were, those two were some obviously very flawed sites and this one is much superior to those).

The problem with style A is that it oftentimes becomes way too competitive with people having rediculous character power levels and people unable to solve duels because they are unwilling to ever let their character be killed. Style B works fine as long as everyone is on the same page.

The problem with this site, in my opinion, is that I believe some people think of it too much as style A and some people too much as style B. When people just want to roleplay and let their character play out in a style B type roleplay, that's all well and good, but once Mr. Style A joins the thread and tries to kill Mr. Style B, whos just in it to tell the story, the thread quickly becomes stale. Mr. Style A isn't willing to slow his character down for the sake of a realistic story, and Mr. Style B has no interest in fighting Mr. Style A by his rules. I've been in too many RPs where the story has grinded to a complete halt because some idiot enters the thread and blindly attacks everyone (and yeah, sometimes that idiot has been me, I admit it).

I've always felt that a role play where everyone was on the same page about their goal would be much more cohesive and fun for everyone, and that the goal of the roleplay has never been clearly defined. And while I think that a successful roleplay in style A would be lots of fun, it seems impractical because of the amount of people who would inevitably cheat in duels and who would be overly competitive about it. It also lends itself to a more stats-based system, which I am totally opposed to and am much more in favor of the freeform system.

My other problem with the site is that the first rule of the site is not followed nearly as much as it should be: "Role-playing shall be the main activity of the site". It seems like the OOC has taken precedence over the RP section and that there is more action in the OOC board by a much more diverse group of members than there is in the RP section. Not that the RP section is inactive, by any means, but it simply feels to me like the RP section has become less important than the OOC.

All this coming from the guy who hasn't done much serious RPing in a long time, though. :CHappy:

And hopefully people will see this more as constructive criticism than just simply criticism. I love the SWRP very much regardless of anything I would have changed about it and there are many awesome things about it that have kept it so successful for so long.

I can't really say, but this forum is more enjoyable than it was when I first came here.
