DESCRIPTION
The Hutt Auto-Janissary is a pattern of antiquated combat droid once manufactured and used by the Hutt clans, primarily at the height of their Empire, prior to and during the early days of the Republic. Inspired primarily by the success of Xim the Despot's fearsome Guardian Corps, and by legends of Agorander's even then ancient droid armies, the Auto-Janissaries were an early attempt by the Hutts to develop their own battle droids, an attractive alternative to the armed slaves and mercenaries they primarily fielded. Although not as successful as the machines they imitated, Auto-Janissaries were still powerful war machines, rightly feared by the enemies of their Hutt masters.

Hutt Auto-Janissaries, like most droids of their era, had relatively limited cognitive functions, and were fairly predictable in combat. They were, however, well armed for their time, with a double-barrel rapid fire beam tube built into one arm, and a cutlass-style vibroblade on the other. Like most war droids, they could be directed by remote, either by an organic commander or a battle computer. They were also equipped with vocabulators, and thus could speak non-droid languages, although they were only capable of conversing in Huttese.

Notably, aside from the standard visual and audio sensors, Auto-Janissaries were also equipped with olfactory sensor and a rudimentary poison detector, although the latter's toxin database is typically millennia out of date in the present day. This last feature nevertheless made the type popular in ancient Hutt courts.

Hutt Auto-Janissaries were unusual in a number of ways, although primarily in their mode of locomotion. Rather than legs or wheels, Auto-Janissaries got around with the use of an articulated monopod, using it to slither across surfaces in a manner similar to their Hutt masters, although they could move significantly faster. Like Hutts, Auto-Janissaries excreted a lubricant - in their case, oil - in order to ease their passage; the droids had an oil reservoir on board which had to be periodically refilled. Although Auto-Janissaries could still locomote without any oil, their progress was significantly slower and louder. Auto-Janissaries were typically followed by an attendant cleaning droid or slave to clean up their oil trail, which could otherwise be a hazard to other droids and organics.

Unlike their inspirations, Hutt Auto-Janissaries never had an overwhelming presence on the front lines of Hutt wars, being less durable and generally less suited to battlefield conditions. They were widely used as sentries and bodyguards, however, and some can even still be found in these roles, passed down over millennia by generations of Hutts. Over time, however, the type has fallen out of favor, being replaced by newer, more advanced models in all but highly ceremonial applications.

Hutt Auto-Janissaries are only rarely seen outside Hutt space, and are generally not available to outsiders.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Despite their age, Hutt Auto-Janissaries are still fearsome killing machines, and possession of them is regulated similarly to modern battle droids on most worlds.

INTENT
To add a droid from Legends canon to our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Hutt Auto-Janissaries are rare, ancient technology, jealously guarded by the Hutts. Non-Hutt characters would require some justification for owning one.
