I've been getting a lot of queries from prospective members on what they need to do to make an Imperial Knight and the answers are usually varied. Each case is unique and one of my policies as FL is to give the maximum latitude possible to the RPer and writer in each of us.

With that being said, here's a thread for pre-character review. For NPC and PCs. Ask pertinent questions here, post passages that you're thinking of posting for your character. Debate and ponder characterization, templates, etc.

Basically this is a writer's workshop so that we can all help each other to make characters that will work for this faction and work for each individual writer. Any member can give advice, be they from the IK or outside, and the IK leadership (myself, Bad Wolf and Shiuzu) are always ready to lend a hand.

Hope it helps!

Question, if we were to be using blades, not lightsabers, what would that blade be made of?

Cortois?

Or Phrik, which IIRC is lightsaber resistant. Up to you. As I've noted, one of our hallmarks is going to be discretion so some sort of vibroblade or lightsaber expy is good anyhow.

I would suggest if you make a phrik sword, explain how you got the phrik. Phrik is rare as opposed to Cortosis.

I personally plan on having a lightsaber or two, but using blasters/slugthrowers/vibroblades for the majority of the missions. The only time I'd whip out my saber (ba dum tss) would be if I were crossing swords (I swear I'm not trying with these lol) with a Sith, and at least for the foreseeable future that shouldn't be happening all that often.

Indeed. Plus it makes it all the more special when you do whip out your saber. *:CHappy

*Okay, I couldn't resist that one. But the point is we're ICly trying discretion so Kaeb's idea of just some random lightsaber resistant blade is actually a rather good one. I recommend everyone has a vibro-blade and at least a few blasters.

However, how many terrorist/rebel organizations even know about lightsaber-resistant alloys, let alone runs around using them as weapons? Just saying, using fancy weapons like that will put us on their radar a lot quicker.

Indeed. Hence why I recommend just regular old vibro-blades. From my knowledge, they're somewhat resistant to lightsabers and can do most of the same stuff we need them for anyhow (stabby end goes into the meat-person.)

That sentiment is accurate though. ICly, I would recommend not having much flashy equipment or if you do, pass yourself off as a bounty hunter. Ultimately up to the RPer, of course, but be aware that the Sith are hunting us, and they're like the Nazgul from Lord of the Rings except we don't get character shields.

So don't be a hobbit.

I'm not using it as a regular weapon, just FYI, it's for apart of the characters background.

For those of you that do use sabers, you should know that if you're captured and it's on your person - you're discovered, whereas if you don't have it you have plausible deniability. That'd definitely help if some guy decides to be cheesy in an RP and do a "random" search of you. Having weapons hidden on your person, or made of difficult to detect material, would be useful. If you keep your sabers hidden, make sure it's an accessible place; never know when you'll need it.

You also need a cover. You can't roam around as an Imperial Knight, that's no cover for a terrorist! You can be a freighter pilot, a smuggler, a bounty hunter or a number of other things, and make sure your gear represents that. You'll probably want a ship, but nothing that will get attention - you don't want people asking questions because you're "that guy" who parked his expensive stealth ship at the local spaceport to sell scrap metal at the market. Even Bounty Hunters won't be flying starfighters - they need some place to keep the prisoners.

You might look to the Jedi "Shadow" for inspiration - you might specialize in a lightsaber, but make sure you have other skills like knife fighting or something. Watch some youtube videos or something to learn some concepts about the more covert weapons you choose.

Those are just a couple tips I think cover the basics.

At the end of the day, part of the awesomeness of the IK is that we're trying to be as covert as possible and thus play down said awesomeness. I'd recommend having functional but essentially generic arms and armor congruent with whatever your chosen occupation is. OOCly, get down the habits of whatever your cover is. How does a bounty hunter act and think? Etc.

Basically what Xy said.

I'm only halfway through my knight, just like Whisper and Kuvo, I get all these ideas, and when I finally start writing them it gets annoyingly long. Incredibly so.

I have one writing rule.

Don't tell the reader anything. Describe it to them.

Unfortunately that results in me taking forever to write things, but I'm at the turning point in the story, it's all coming together. I'll try and finish it tomorrow, then I'll resign fully to my studies just as I said in my notification thread.

Are there any restrictions on who can join? For example could a character that is 28 and has had no prior force training join? And how could they "find" the IKs?

Given their IC status? Sure. And perhaps they could stumble onto the IK during one of their missions?

I have no doubt that there are those who oppose the Sith and support the Imperial Knights. They likely have a variety of professions, and I bet we'd be recruiting defecting Stormtroopers or what not. Force potentials would also probably be recruited more covertly, and could probably join in as a squire; the equivalent of a Jedi Padawan.

Ok. Thanks for the clarification. I'll probably get around to getting my character written out sometime this weekend and once I do I'd appreciate your input.
