Hello, Adventurers.

This is the story of four people living in the Iron Kingdoms who are about to make an interesting impact. How exactly this impact will be, is yet to be written. Thus, we move to the small village of Villenbrook, just a few kilometers north of the main Capital of Cygnar, on a Monday evening during an exemplary bad weather day. Honestly, it does not need to get much more bad to make it rain cats and dogs, but they would probably be blown away by the ice cold wind.

Luckily, the "Unsteady Aim" Tavern is built from solid stone and good windows, thus the inhabitants, among them the four adventurers, are enjoying quite a warm evening, mingle with the other guests, enjoying a drink or two and wait for something to happen.

Lucky for us, we do know that something will happen, otherwise we would not be there. But surely, none of the adventurers were aware that this was just the start of things to come. Cue the dramatic entrance..

It was warm and cuddly here in the Tavern, and the beer was fresh, not watered down yet cheap and the music was well performed. That was in stark contrast to the weather. So it was no wonder the tavern was filled to the brim with guests today who were less then willing to leave it not absolutely necessary. The only one who was not singing or drinking here seemed to be Theresa, the barmaid this evening. But she smiled, as the tips on such evenings are usually enough to make up for the hassle.

The good mood and loud singing was suddenly interrupted, as the door was opened suddenly, flooding the interior with cold air. With the loud sound of a thunder strike in the background a man entered the Tavern, wearing a soaking wet blue robe, a thick belt with a multitude of pockets and a enormous backpack on his back. The short brown hair clinched to his wet forehead and the brown eyes were barely visible due to the round pair of glasses that did not want to stay on his nose correctly. He looked around and in the silence that had set in he proclaimed:

"Hear me, are there any mercenaries present? I assure you this is a matter of up most importance. My Boss, Professor Pendrake disappeared not far from here when we were camping for the night and I am willing to pay three hundred Crowns, not nonnegotiable, to the first four willing to help me find him"

The silence prolonged. Professor Pendrake was not exactly unknown among the citizens of Immoren and usually his name produced a knowing nod in all the kingdoms. That's easily explained since he was an crown-payed explorer and author of the Monster Lexicon I and II, the world's best known lecture for all and everyone willing to know about the local (and not so local) monsters. What means he faced all and every thing that's usually trying to eat, bite, scratch, devour and haunt normal adventurers. And survived to write a book.

So..

A disappeared Pendrake could be very, very dangerous. It was clear that some of the mercenaries already used the little abacus in their brain to measure the ratio of risk versus winnings.

Seated on a chair leaning against the wall, a young woman of mixed thurian and khard heritage with pale skin, icy gray eyes, and wavy, black hair in a loose braid along the left side of her head looked up sharply from her drink of mulled wine as the door opened and let the storm in. The leather of her worn greatcoat creaked as she adjusted her position in order to see better, and she suppressed a shiver at the ominous lightning that announced the man's arrival.

Her eyes widened at the mention of Pendrake, and the fact that this intrepid (some would say insane) explorer was missing. The number of crowns being offered was interesting as well, of course, but Pendrake..! This wasn't exactly what she'd come here for, but it was more than sufficient to pique her interest. Her standing orders were to take some time off and relax, so... It couldn't hurt to take on a little search 'n rescue, right?

Taking a last sip of her drink, she got up and walked over to the man, making her way through the throng of people who had come there to seek refuge from the storm. "You need a scout. I'm Vika," she introduced herself to the man with a friendly smile and an extended hand.

He had to get away from the hustle and bustle of the capital city. He always got a little stir crazy in Cygnar, but of course, that is where he was often sent by the church. Having completed his duties, he had exited the city and headed north to the small town of Villenbrook. It was slower here, just how Valen like it. He had rented a room at the Unsteady Aim earlier in the day and had come down as the dinner rush was just getting into full swing.

He wore a simple white shirt and tan pants, the holy symbol of Morrow hung from his neck.

He listened as the man gave his offer of coin for the assistance in finding the Professor. No one was standing up. Three Hundred crowns was not near enough the entice the adventures here to brave the gods forsaken rain and whatever trouble the good professor had found himself in. He turned around and began walking towards the man. He spotted a familiar face already speaking with man.

"I'll come too. The names Valen Dawnbringer." he said smiling at Vika and giving her a slight nod.

As valen worked his way downstairs, Zuruk sat amidst the balcony watching the neighboring persons around him. Ensuring that his companion lie safe regardless of his skill in combat.

Listening to the comments exchanged Zur, let out a minor grunt from the shadows towards valen as he offered his services. Zur didnt do well with crowns seeing as many would question the Orguns motives and or how he obtained the currency. But none the less he knew this new venture might take him somewhere less...."busy" with the timid beings by his race.

The ogruns dark past always haunted him, even after his recovery by the cleric and his teachings. Whether it was in his mind or even others recognizing his tribal markings upon his body, and trying to slay the former war chief where he stands.

Zur didnt own much, matter of fact he had very little all of which he was able to cary on hismself, in the means of armor, weapons, minor cloth, survival/outdoors supplies, food and water and a small amount of traded goods.

Knowing this was the time to get ready he rose to his feet and stepped off to ensure his and his masters belongings were prepped for their travels. Laying out the clerics gear he awaited the word...

"Vat am I going to do about this..." A dark skinned woman asked herself quietly as she sat alone at a table in the far corner of the bar, a cup in her hand and the hood of her greatcoat pulled up, and buttoned up to cover most of her form from view. She had a rounded face, a few scars criss-crossing along her jaw and cheek, one down her eye, and her long hair white in contrast to the black leather as she let out a sigh.

"No work since I've gotten here. Vat is it that makes them so scared to give me a chance?" She said, her voice slightly accented as she took another drink of her beer. It was good, nice flavor, and it tasted crisp, not like it had been set out in the sun too long like most taverns she had stayed at. She must have gotten lucky, she thought, but luck in getting a good drink wasn't as good as luck for getting some decent money together. She could barely afford bullets it seemed, at least with the money she was willing to spend.

"Is not like job vill drop from sky like magic. Come on, Durak, get your head into gear and think." She said to herself, using her native tonuges language for fool as she heard someone come into the bar, and then start addressing the people inside. She slowly rose from her seat, leaning forward as she heard the mans proposition, and the mention of 300 crowns. 300 crowns was a good chunk of coin to have, and more importantly, it was 300 crowns she didn't have on her, that could really help to hit the spot.

"Fortune smiles, it seems..." she said as she walked over towards the group of people, quickening her pace as more signed up and coming to a stop in front of the blue robed man, "I am Oksana, if you need a gun, I can provide it." She said, her accent a mix of Khald and something else, that couldn't quite be placed as she spoke the common language of cygnar well enough to understand. She looked to the others and gave a nod to them, and a somewhat weary nod to the Ogrun, before looking back to the blue robed man.

After taking the offered had for a short shake, the man looked at the three volunteers with a look from top to bottom each and it seemed he was willing to work with what he was given

"Excuse my bad manners. I am Percival Paddington, the personal assistant of the Professor. I implore you to get ready for.. well, anything really and meet me in front of this establishment as soon as you are capable of. If you don't have any other means of transportation, I do have a cart ready to get us there quickly." he nodded a little and twitched as another loud thunder was heart from the unrelenting weather outside and it was clear that the idea of going out again without warming up was not his most favorite idea today.

"I can provide half of the payment when we arrive at our camp, as I was not willing to risk being robbed on my way here or back, the other half will be provided with a bonus if we get the Professor back, or after three days if we are unable to find him. I am not doing a fools errant but also decline to accept his death so soon. So please, do hurry..." he paused after a short glimpse behind the three adventurers "Uhm, is the Ogrun a friend of one of you? It seems either that or he just volunteered without speaking up.. not unusual in both cases.."

Vika shook Paddington's hand with a firm, confident grip. She let go of his hand and turned to look at the man joining them, the one garbed in white and brown with a medallion of Morrow's faith hanging from his neck. She recognized him immediately, and couldn't help but wonder if this was truly a coincidence.

"Oh, greetings, Brother Valen!" Vika said with a smile and a small bow in the priest's direction. "I had no idea you were staying at this Inn as well. Out into the rain once more, aye?" She added the last with a humorous chuckle.

Her eyes widened slightly at the realization that huge ogrun she'd been watching people skirt nervously around, and whom she had been subtly eyeing with thoughtful consideration, seemed to be responding somehow to the priest's decision to join her and Paddington in the search for Professor Pendrake. Now that's intriguing... You keep some interesting company, Brother.

A fourth person joined them as well, a northerner, judging by her accent. Being Cygnaran, Viktoria had a natural skepticism of the nation's aggressive northern neighbor, but being half-Khard she also knew something of being different, or being held accountable for the actions of others. She greeted Oksana with a pleasant smile, determined to give the woman the benefit of the doubt. Looking over to the ogrun as Paddington spoke, she waited for the priest to answer his question.

"A cart would be much appreciated. I vill join you in cart, as soon as I take care of my business." Oksana said as she gave a nod, glad there was some form of transportation they could manage to get out of this. She really didn't look forward to hoofing it all the way in this dangerous expedition. "Three days is much time. It is a good call to make." She said as she heard the details, giving a nod as she heard the tersm. They sounded reasonable enough, to her at least. A dangerous mission like this would at least ensure they died with some coin in their pocket, should the worse come to pass.

"Vhenever you are ready, I will be ready to go." She said, doing a quick count in her head about how much she'd have. Between buying ammo and paying the fee for the room and board she currently owed, it'd be just enough for her to go broke, and then get the advance on the payment. That would be good enough for her, for the moment at least.

With the most immediate questions settled, the group quickly scattered for a moment to pick their things and not long after found themselves on or beside a old cart puled by two horses.

The weather was still bad and quite soon most of the mercenaries found themselves chilled and wet from the sight-reducing rain. But at least they all had their advance payment and a clearly defined target.

Since the cart was relatively slow on the drenched road, there was still half an hour of way to go according to Percival, there was a little time to describe the situation more in detail.

Asked about this, he responded with: "Weel, first of we do have a way to keep our camp dry during such weathers, so the possibility to track any kind of trace helping us to find out who or what got to the professor. I just hope this protection holds long enough to keep it that way. I also was at watch and I would not be ashamed if I just dozed off and would have been out when it happened. But alas, I was only at my second cup of coffee when I realized he was gone and quite certainly was well awake. I am also certain I did not see or hear anything out of the ordinary during that time and... to be blunt.. To get to the Professor undetected even while he sleeps is quite a feat I need to say. He faced a good number of Monsters and entities, most of which would have eaten him alive would he not have such a light sleep. This whole situation is very concerning to me."

"And you're certain he did not wander off of his own accord?" Vika had listened to the manservant's explanation, and thought the question was apt. The Professor was famous for many things, and surely he had to have a curious mind to take such risks and keep traveling despite his hardships.

Vika had pulled up her hood, and her face was partially shrouded as she looked over to the other ones who had signed up for what at least for now looked like a search and rescue mission. Suppressing a shiver, she let her body rock gently from one side to the other whenever the cart bounced on an errant stone or root. "Were you tracking any particular kind of beast or story in this area?" She added after a moment's thought. Perhaps knowing more about why he had been in the area, would give them some ideas of what to expect and where to search.
