Ruzaan enjoyed going for walks in the forests surrounding the temple on Yavin IV, finding that fresh air in his lungs and earth beneath his feet did wonders for his connection to the Force. Like many Togruta, he eschewed footwear whenever possible and today was no exception. The midmorning sun warmed his face, and an occasional light breeze rustled the leaves overhead. It was a calm, peaceful day.

Ruzaan stopped suddenly, frowning to himself. Something wasn't quite right, and it took him a moment to realize what. One of the trees he'd just passed was gently rocking in a different direction compared to the others. Alarm bells clanged in Ruzaan's head; on Shili- he would be in serious danger right now- and his lightsaber was immediately in his hand as he threw himself towards the nearest ditch in a barely-controlled dive and roll. His double-bladed lightsaber hummed to live as he came up in a defensive crouch, every sense on alert for an attacker... only to realize that the tree's motion was because of a padawan perched in its branches.

Cheeks flushing in embarrassment, Ruzaan put away his lightsaber sheepishly and stared up at the boy. The first thing that struck Ruzaan was that the padawan had long, auburn-colored hair; and pointy ears, like Clove's. Wide, blue-green eyes were glancing at a book, and Ruzaan had to admit that by human standards, the boy must be considered quite attractive.

"Hello there!" he said by way of introduction, waving up at the padawan. "My name's Ruzaan; I didn't see you there, sorry!"

In Elidan's opinion, the forests around the Jedi Temple were also a good place to read. He loved the nature around him and the fresh air, but the best part was the silence. Being a half-Sephi, he could hear more sounds than some sentients. In a place like the Temple so full of people, any small sound was enough to distract him from his reading.

Today was one of these days. Wanting more peace to read, the half-Sephi had walked to the forest and, using the Force, jumped to a branch. There he sat and started to read an old fashioned book about the High Republic. Elidan remembers that he received this book as a gift from the Jedi that had teached him sign language. It was rare to find this type of book, since most were replaced by holobooks.

He had read it so many times that he could tell which page a certain phrase would be. However, he still loved to reread this book. The way the author wrote it, made the information more interesting and easy to understand. Every time that he read it, Elidan still found new things.

Elidan was so concentrated on reading that even with his hearing he didn't notice the other padawan approaching. Only when he heard the unmistakable noise of a lightsaber being activated did the half-Sephi react. Scared, he looked toward the place from where the sound came and saw a Togruta Padawan, who was now introducing himself.

Before the half-Sephi could do anything, he lost balance in the branch that he was perched on. The book fell off his hand, while he tried to maintain himself in the tree. Luckily it wasn't tall enough to kill him, but a fall from it could leave some injuries. Even with all his efforts, the Padawan would inevitably fall off it.

Ruzaan had taken his eyes off the other padawan for a mere second- in an attempt to avoid extended eye contact during the introductions phase of socializing- and when his gaze flicked back up he noticed that the boy was falling down. Without thinking, Ruzaan thrust out his left hand and used Telekinesis to break some of the boy's fall when the half-Sephi was about 10 feet off the ground. He wouldn't be able to stop the other padawan's fall completely, but it might help save the boy from injury. "Sorry!" Ruzaan called out again, regret written plainly across his face.

While he fell off the tree, Elidan only could think that it was going to hurt. While it wasn’t high enough to kill him, the Padawan probably was going to get some time at the Medical bay. However, the half-Selphi soon felt the Togruta use the Force to slow down his fall. When he reached the ground, the boy would only have a bit of pain instead of the many injuries that would have happened without the other's intervention.

Getting up from the ground, Elidan started to sign to the Togruta, who was called Ruzaan “No, it’s my fault. I should have been careful. My name is Elidan. Thank you, for the help.” then he stopped doing signs abruptly. He thought that the other, like all other Padawans, probably didn’t understand what he meant with the signs. This made the half-Sephi become nervous, his face was red and the point of his ears were twitching.

Due to his nervousness, Elidan shifted his gaze from Ruzaan to his own shoes. It was to avoid embarrassing moments like this that he used his Datapad to communicate, when necessary, with other Padawans. However, this time he had left it in the Temple. While he waited for the Togruta to say something, the half-Sephi already expected the other to call him a weirdo. As always happened in these situations, Elidan wanted to run away

Ruzaan started rushing over to where the other padawan had fallen, only to pull up as he realized that the boy wasn't seriously hurt. He'd have a few bruises for his troubles, but that was all- probably the best result given the height from which he'd fallen.

The half-Sephi's hands danced, and It took Ruzaan a moment to realize that the padawan was signing at him. His own sign language was rusty- a couple years removed from its use on Shili to silently coordinate hunting parties- but he caught a few words; fault... careful... thank you... help... and the Padawan's name: Elidan.

"I'm Ruzaan, it's nice to meet you" Ruzaan replied in sign language as best he could, then tried to clarify what he'd seen Elidan communicate. "Do you need help?"

Elidan only stopped staring at his shoes when he noticed that Ruzaan was using sign language to communicate with him. The half-Sephi looked with wide eyes while the Togruta greeted him using signs. The other boy was probably the first Padawan that the half-Sephi had met that knew how to use it.

After recovering from his surprise, Elidan started to sign to Ruzaan “It’s nice to meet you too, Ruzaan. I’m fine, only a few bruises.” he paused to look at the branch where he was perched. If it wasn't for the other, he would probably have broken some bones. Then he turned to the Togruta “Thank you again for the help. If it wasn't for you, it would have been much worse.

By the way, I can hear well. I just can’t talk.” he had noticed how the other Padawan struggled in doing the signs, Elidan didn’t want to be an inconvenience for him. The half-Sephi also decided to not explain to the Togruta about his selective mutism and how apparently he could speak at some moment. He was still afraid that the other would think that he was a weirdo.

Uncertain of what to do now, but curious about the only other Padawan that he meet that could use this language, Elidan signed to Ruzaan “If you don't mind me asking, where did you learn sign language? You are the first Padawan that I have met who knows it.” as soon as he finished doing the signs, the half-Sephi regretted it. What if the other becomes mad with this question? What if it was due to some personal reason and with his question he offended the Togruta? Several “what ifs” started to appear in the boy’s mind, making his nervousness increase. It was easily noticeable by the twitch in the point of his ears.

"It's fine" Ruzaan signed back in response to the boy's thanks- he felt a little sheepish about being praised for anything, given that he was the reason that Elidan had fallen in the first place.

Ruzaan would not be able to keep a look of surprise off of his face when Elidan admitted that he wasn't deaf, but the Togruta quickly decided that the other Padawan's reasons for doing so were none of his business. If anything, it would make communication easier as Ruzaan wouldn't have to worry about communicating with own his less-than-stellar sign language. The Togruta's brow furrowed as he deciphered Elidan's question, then cleared his throat to before responding.

"Where did I... oh! I learned a form of sign language on Shili, my homeworld" he replied out loud. "We used it to communicate silently during hunting parties and the like." Elidan would've likely noticed that Ruzaan's sign language cut many corners in order to get its point across as quickly as possible. "What about you? How did you learn?" Ruzaan smiled in encouragement, picking up on the other Padawan's nervousness.

Ruzaan explanation about how he learned sign language perked Elidan's interest. He tried to remember what he had read about the Togrutas of Shili. The boy knew that they had a hunting culture, but never read that they used signs to communicate with each other during hunts. This was really a smart strategy so they could communicate and still remain silent. It also explained why the Ruz used signs to form short and to-the-point sentences.

This was fascinating, he wondered if they had a special sign language based in the Togruti language. The half-Sephi was always interested in learning more about everything, but he refrained from asking the other about it. The Padawan didn’t want to annoy or make the other mad because of silly questions.

When Ruzaan asked how he had learned sign language, Elidan froze. His nervousness was returning, the half-Sephi was afraid that the other would ask why he suffered from mutism. It was still a painful topic for him. However, the Togruta was being nice and even answered his question. It was only fair if he did the same.

"I learned with a Jedi Healer. She said that it could help me communicate with others." he signed to Ruzaan. It was a resumed version of the truth, Elidan wanted to avoid the need to explain that he had learned sign language after spending months in the medical bay while the healers tried to understand why he couldn't speak.

"You seem to have lived a good time in Shili. How were these hunts?" the half-Sephi signed to the Togruta. He hoped the other wouldn't mind this abrupt change of subject. However, he soon regretted having asked this question. In his opinion it was too personal. Who knows, maybe the other boy had painful experiences in his past before joining the Order. "Sorry. I'll understand if you don’t want to answer that." Elidan quickly signed, the other Padawan would be able to notice the point of his ears twitching due to nervousness.

"That's cool!" Ruzaan responded to Elidan's comment about learning sign language. He was pretty sure he knew which Healer the half-Sephi was talking about; a very expressive and friendly Jedi who gave out candy when patching you up after lightsaber class.

Elidan's next question caught him off guard with an abrupt change in subject, but Ruzaan was just happy that the other padawan didn't seem to be harboring a grudge for flushing him out of the tree. "I've only been here for about two standard years" the Togruta replied, smiling to brush aside Elidan's concerns about the question. He was beginning to suspect that the Elidan's ear twitches were a sign of nervousness, although he wasn't certain- his other half-Sephi friend, Clove, had very expressive eyes so he wasn't in the habit of watching her ears. "The hunts were fun! Our primary prey were rat-like rodents called Thimars, and it took teamwork and coordination to catch them. For some reason I was always given the job of distraction..." Ruzaan face creased in concentration as he tried to remember back; had there been a reason for that? A brief moment later he had convinced himself that it was simply a job given to Togruta teens like himself.

"If you don't mind my asking, where are you from?" Ruzaan asked

Elidan was relieved that Ruzaan wasn’t annoyed with his questions. It was the first time that the Half-Sephi had a proper conversation with another Padawan, he didn't want to do things that could destroy this moment. Even with him avoiding others for most of the time, sometimes he still wanted to interact with others.

The Padawan explanation about how he used to hunt on Shili, sparked Elidan’s curiosity. He had read about the Thimiars and how these creatures used to have post mortem spasms, giving the impression that they were poisoned. "I read about them in a holobook sometime ago. It said that Thimiars are very appreciated by the Togrutas. Did you like to eat it?" he signed to the other boy. Then he thought that the other could consider this question strange. "I mean, was it part of your favourite food? I like fried tip-yip." The half-Sephi quickly signed again, now it was better.

Since he didn’t talk much with people his own age, the Padawan feared that his questions would turn out to be inappropriate and offensive. Elidan feared offending other people by accident.

Then Ruzaan asked him where he was born. "I'm from an orphanage in Chardaan. But at three years old I was identified as a Force user and have been part of the Jedi Order since then." he signed to the Togruta. Elidan never knew his parents or if he had a surname. Even his name was given by the people that worked in the orphanage. The half-Sephi was left at the orphanage as a nobody, with no name and surname.

However, he would not annoy the other boy with his life problems. "How was your life in Shili? Do you used to have friends there?" he signed. This was an attempt to change the subject of the conversation.

"Thimars taste pretty good, yes!" Ruzaan said, a smile warming his eyes as he thought the delicacy. "Many offworlders don't like them, but I guess it's an acquired taste. What's tip-yip? I've never heard of that before." Ruzaan was always happy to try new things, especially food.

As much as he missed his life on Shili, Ruzaan couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as Elidan described his upbringing. Ruzaan had come to the temple at a much older age, and the Togruta always felt like he was playing catch-up in his Jedi training when compared to many of his peers.

Elidan, it seemed, was content to keep the conversation centered on Ruzaan, though, asking about his life on Shili. Ruzaan took a moment to think before replying, a hint of nostalgia in his tone as he responded. "Shili was a beautiful place to live" he said. "I miss the turu-grass, and my friends, and my tribe... but I've also found a new community here with the Jedi, and I'm thankful for that."

Ruzaan figured it was now his turn to ask a question. "What was it like growing up at the temple from such a young age?

Elidan was surprised when Ruzaan said that he didn't know what tip-yip was. "It's the name for a type of domestic chicken. Some people also call it Endorian chicken, because it was first bred by the Ewoks." he signed to the other Padawan. The half-Sephi had read in a book about birds of the Galaxy that after the Battle of Endor, the tip-yip spread across the Galaxy, even reaching distant places like Bantu.

"I prefer tip-yip to common chicken. Well, common chicken is good too, but in my opinion the Endorian variation has more meat and tastes even better." Elidan signed to the Togruta while smiling. Even if he grew up in the Temple, surrounded by its aura of austerity, the half-Sephi still appreciated good food. Then his eyes would shine with a thought that he had. Still smiling, the boy would sign "I had an idea. Next time that there's tip-yip in the cafeteria meals, I'll get a piece for you to try. Then if someday we go to Shili, I would like to try a dish with Thimar."

As soon as he finished, Elidan would think that what he signed could be annoying for the other Padawan. After all, they aren't even friends and he was already asking the other to bring him to visit his homeworld. "I mean, if you are fine with it." he would sign, his face red with shame and the point of his ears twitching.

Hearing Ruzaan talk about his life in Shili made the Half-Sephi more curious to know the planet and also made him a bit sad. Elidan has few memories of his time in the orphanage in Chardaan, nearly all of his childhood memories are related to the Jedi Order, which became his family. But a part of him was still curious about who could have been his parents and why they left him in the orphanage.

After hearing his question, Elidan smiled at the Togruta. His early childhood was probably the happiest years of his life, when he still could talk. "It was good. I grew up with a group of other orphaned younglings in the Temple of Ajan Kloss. I was always shy, but I had some friends among them. We were like siblings." then he would stop signing, the smile disappearing from his lips. Even after five years these events were still painful. "Then the Sith attacked. From the group that I grew with, I was the only survivor." the half-Sephi signed, his hands a bit shaken.

Elidan had made a long treatment to be able to talk and hear about these events without crying or having a full panic attack. But it still had an effect on him. Ruzaan would probably notice how the Half-Sephi blue green eyes were teary. The boy would close them and some tears would run through his face. Then he would use some breathing techniques that he learned to calm himself, finding peace in the Force.

After calming himself, he would open his eyes and look at Ruz. "I'm sorry." he would sign before turning his eyes to look at his shoes. The Togruta was probably thinking that he was weird.

"Deal" replied Ruzaan, to Elidan's food swap suggestion. As awkward as their first few moments had been, he was grateful to have entered this conversation with the other padawan. "Do you like spicy foods? You can get Thimar prepared in a lot of ways..." All this talk of food was making the Togruta hungry, and his stomach rumbled.

Then, the mood of the conversation shifted. Ajan Kloss.... of course. If Elidan had grown up in the Order, he would've been present for that fateful day. Ruzaan had joined the Order a few years after the massacre, but it was an event that still cast a long shadow over the Jedi; and Elidan.

"I'm sorry for your loss" Ruzaan said, his voice softening to almost an empathetic whisper as he picked up on Elidan's sorrow. "And you have nothing to apologize for. Do you want to talk about it, or be distracted from it?"

Elidan looked at Ruzaan, a weak smile forming on his lips. He was grateful for the other being so understanding. This traumatic event still plagued the half-Sephi, even after five years. If the boy could avoid talking about that, he would choose this option. "I prefer to talk about other things, please."

Then he decided to continue talking about food, it was a more interesting subject. He smiled at the idea of doing a food exchange with the other boy "Cool. I can't wait to taste the Thimad." he signed to the Togruta, his hands no longer shaking. "Yes, I like spicy food. I also like to eat some types of meat with spice sauce."

"Do you like desserts? My favourite is Jogan fruitcake. Do you have any favorites?" Elidan also liked sweets, he wondered if the other boy liked it too. By now, the half-Sephi had already calmed himself, with his mind free from the thoughts about Ajan Kloss. "Does Shili have any special dessert?"

Elidan stopped signing after he noticed how many questions he had thrown at the other boy. His face became red. "Sorry for asking so many questions. It's the first time that I talk with someone from Shili, so I'm curious. I'll understand if you don’t want to answer. The last thing that I want is to annoy you." he signed. This was probably the longest conversation that the half-Sephi had with another Padawan and he had become excited about it, wanting to know more about the Togruta.

Ruzaan smiled as Elidan set a boundary. Distraction it would be, then, and the topic returned to the safer subject of food. Ruzaan learned that Elidan did, in fact, enjoy spicy foods, and that Jogan Fruitcake was the half-Sephi's favorite desert. Then the other Padawan unleashed a barrage of questions, finally seeming to warm up to the conversation as the Ajan Kloss memories subsided.

Ruzaan's face lit up as Elidan turned the topic towards desserts. "You're not annoying me- I'm enjoying this as much as you are! Arctus brought a legendary 14-layer cake to the social a while ago, and I've been thinking about it ever since" he responded. "It was terrific! Shili has a few special deserts, but my favorite is turu-root pie. It's easy to find the ingredients, and it's nutritious and tasty!"

Again, Ruzaan's stomach grumbled, and he smiled; in embarrassment, this time. "Speaking of food, are you interested in getting some lunch? I'm starving!"

When Ruzaan mentioned eating a 14-layer cake in a social, Elidan thought about how he used to avoid going to these events. The half-Sephi always ended up staying alone in a corner, too nervous to talk with anyone. He would feel so uncomfortable that he soon would leave to spend the rest of the time in his room reading.

"We can do a dessert swap too. I taste turu-root pie and you Jogan fruitcake." Elidan signed to the other Padawan. He liked the idea of planning a food exchange with the Togruta. "This type of fruitcake is easy to make, but I heard that the rich people made some complex recipes for their events. I like the one that the Temple's cantina usually does."

Elidan's eyes shone with happiness when Ruzaan asked if he wanted to get lunch with him. It would be the first time that he did something like that. Usually he would eat alone. "Yes, I would like that."

Before they could start walking toward the Temple, the half-Sephi remembered the book that he was reading. "Wait, I need to pick my book." Elidan signed tothe Togruta. Then he turned to look for it, finding the book near the roots of the tree where he was before Ruz scared him. Walking there, Elidan bent down and picked it up. The Padawan was happy when he noticed that it wasn’t damaged, this book was really important to him. After picking it he walked back to Ruzaan, so they could go have lunch.

The more they communicated, the more Ruzaan was grateful that he'd stumbled upon Elidan reading here today. Briefly, the Togruta wondered just how many Jedi had written the half-Sephi off as strange or dumb just because he couldn't speak; they were missing out on a wonderful person, and Ruzaan's face shone clearly with the realization that he was on his way to making a new friend.

So eager was he to continue their budding friendship that Ruzaan totally forgot the reason Elidan had been perched in a tree in the first place; a book. The half-Sephi signed to Ruzaan that they needed to retrieve their book, a silent act during which Ruzaan's montrals- highly sensitive auditory organs evolved to aid in survival- picked up on an unnatural rustling in the underbrush as something, or things, barreled closer.

"Freeze! Silent!" Ruzaan hastily signed to Elidan as the other Padawan returned with their book. Again, his hand dropped to his lightsaber, but the Togruta did not draw it. Some 60 meters away, further down the path in the opposite direction of the temple, a patrol of four klikniks scuttled across the path and into the jungle on the other side of the road. The insectoid creatures appeared to be returning from a hunting raid of some sort, and Ruzaan's heart beat even faster as he realized that they had been carrying the unmistakable form of Jedi Youngling Kift Roker with them; no one besides the young Corellian wore robes in that shade of orange.

Ruzaan didn't need sign language to communicate his thoughts to Elidan as his face settled into a determined mask. They were too far away from the temple to run for help, and Ruzaan didn't want to think about what would happen to Kift if the klikniks returned with him to their lair. A quick look over at the half-Sephi spoke volumes. You in?

While he walked back to where Ruzaan was, Elidan had a bright smile on his lips. He was thinking about what happened so far. When he came to the forest to read, he never imagined that other Padawan would find him there.

Usually he disliked when someone disturbed him while he was reading, but it was the first that he didn't mind. The half-Sephi had appreciated their conversation, perhaps he was going to have a friend. His first one after Ajan Kloss.

The boy’s smile disappeared when he saw the Togruta sign for him to remain silent. Elidan obeyed and stopped walking. He saw the Togruta move his hand to his lightsaber and turn his head to the road that led deeper into the forest. The half-Sephi followed his gaze and what he saw made him wide his eyes. A group of klikniks crossed it and they seemed to be carrying a person with them. The Padawan couldn’t identify who it was, but he saw that the person was dressed in orange colored clothes.

Elidan was surprised with the presence of these insectoid creatures. He knew that the forests of Yavin IV were dangerous, that was why he always chose to read in a place in the forest that was close to the Temple. The fauna avoided approaching the place. The presence of klikniks there was very strange.

Elidan turned to Ruzaan and saw the determination in his eyes. He knew exactly what the other was thinking, the Togruta wanted to save the person that was being carried by the klikniks. The half-Sephi nodded to him, he was going to help the other boy in this rescue mission. They would need to be fast, once they enter in their underground nest, would be impossible to save who was being carried.

Upon receiving a nod from Elidan, Ruzaan took off down the path towards where the klikniks had crossed it, setting a rapid (but not breakneck) pace. The presence of Elidan helped ground Ruzaan, and the Togruta reasoned that it was important to conserve some energy for when they actually caught up to the bugs.

For now, the Jedi had two advantages: the klikniks were unaware of their pursuers, and were also ridiculously easy to track. A wide trail of broken underbrush and trampled fauna, marked with the occasional orange threads of Kift's unique robes, meant that the Jedi could focus all of their energy on running and not on tracking. The trail also weaved back and forth from time to time; a testament to the insectoid nature of the klikniks to be easily distracted.

Every step that Ruzaan took brought him closer to where he knew a kliknik hive to be; a dangerous area that he'd been repeatedly warned to avoid. He caught a glimpse of Elidan running beside him, and gratitude that he wasn't going into this situation alone flooded through him. Then, he returned his focus to running.

Elidan followed Ruzaan when he started to run after the klikniks. The half-Sephi noticed that the Togruta seemed to be completely on his element. The way that the other boy walked through the forest, easily avoiding branches and roots showed how the other knew what he was doing.

On the other hand, half-Sephi was having some difficulties when moving. He needed to crouch to avoid some branches and sometimes Elidan would stumble on some roots, thankfully he didn't fall with his face on the floor. If it happened, he would probably throw himself at the kliknik’s nest rather than facing the shame that he would feel.

Another proof of Ruz's abilities was how he easily identified the tracks of the insectoid creatures and the orange threads of their captive's robes. Elidan wondered if the Togruta would be interested in teaching him how to follow tracks. It could be a really good ability for a Jedi to have.

The two would continue running after the klikniks, with each step they approached their lair. Elidan remembered the warnings that the Knights would give to the Padawans to never go to this part of the forest. To defend their queen, these insectoid creatures would kill anyone that trespassed their territory. The half-Sephi hoped that they would be able to rescue the person.
