“The Jedi are selfless. They only care about others.”
―Anakin Skywalker to Chancellor Palpatine

JEDI TRAINING DOJO

The darkness was total. Not even a hint of light penetrated the hood she wore over her head. Unlike a blindfold, that allowed for normal hearing, sound was muffled. Fiach balanced on her feet, kept her training lightsaber in a defensive position, and concentrated. Without sight or clear sound, she was obliged to rely entirely on the Force.

She moved to her left, whirled, and struck out with her lightsaber. It passed through empty air. She sensed she’d been close but that counted for little to Fiach.

Off to her left, she heard a buzzing sound, and the clatter of metal hitting the floor.

“Point,” the Master said loudly enough for both Padawans to hear.

Fiach felt a trickle of sweat slide down her back. The hood was hot from her breath and she gripped her lightsaber more firmly. The other Padawan in this training exercise had already destroyed three seeker droids. Fiach hadn’t felled one.

“Remember your purpose,” the Master intoned.

Fiach heard not just what the Master said, but what they meant. She could not speak for the other Padawan but Fiach knew she had lost her focus – and the Master clearly did too. The purpose of the exercise, Fiach knew, was cooperation. It did not matter how many seeker droids she destroyed or how many were taken down by the other Padawan. They would be judged on how they worked together. They would have to read each other’s intentions through movement, instinct, and the Force. They would have to be generous, reaching out to each other to reveal their intentions.

But how could she reach out to someone who fought only for themselves?

Her fellow Padawan focused on the probes and ignored Fiach. A skilled fighter, the other Padawan was single-minded in their purpose. Every particle of their being seemed focused on victory. It made them one of the best lightsaber fighters in the Temple. Far better than Fiach, who was beginning to feel inadequate by comparison.

Faintly, Fiach heard the other Padawan’s footsteps behind her, and heard their foot slide as she lunged. Another buzz, another clatter of metal.

Fiach gritted her teeth. The other Padawan was known to have extraordinary promise. Now they were proving their value and showing up Fiach in the process.

A feeling of inadequacy surged inside Fiach, driving out her connection to the Force. Rather than rely on the Force, Fiach listened intently for the slight stir in the air that the seeker droid caused. She heard the sound, whirled to her right, and collided with the other Padawan.

“Opposite corners,” the Master barked.

Fiach moved back to her corner. She rubbed her palm along her tunic. Her hands were perspiring, and her lightsaber almost slipped from her grasp. Dropping it while fighting alongside the other Padawan would be humiliating.

She wished she had her Master’s patience. She still had so much to learn. Try as she might, she could not penetrate the other Padawan’s devotion to the exercise. It was their battle and therefore their challenge. There was no room for Fiach in the equation, she was surplus to requirement.

They started forward again. Fiach moved slowly, reaching out to the Force to indicate where the seeker droids were flying. She heard another clang as a further seeker droid hit the floor.

“Trust your partner as well as the Force,” the Master called out. “Aggression and competitiveness have no place in this exercise.”

Fiach felt the other Padawan move slightly nearer to her and wondered if this signalled a change.

Yet she still felt nothing from the Padawan. Another seeker droid hit the floor, and Fiach’s feeling of failure blossomed and drove out her caution. She made the decision to work alone.

Buzz, clang! A seeker droid hit the floor as Fiach dropped to one knee and made a horizontal sweep. She rolled to her left, then swung upward. Clang! Another droid hit the floor. Why should she wait for the other Padawan’s cooperation while they simply destroyed all the droids by themselves? Fiach did not want to look an inadequate fool.

Fiach twisted, lunged, and attacked again. She heard the other Padawan’s breathing and the faint noise of nimble footwork as they did the same.

Within a couple of minutes, the two of them had destroyed every seeker droid in the room.

Fiach felt she atoned for her earlier lack of success as she removed her hood. They had defeated the probes in what must be a new record. The other Padawan looked elated as they removed their own hood. They bowed to each other, then turned to face the Jedi Master.

“You have both failed the exercise. I will see you individually later.” The Master’s tone was stern and they left the room quickly.

An hour or so later, Fiach was just leaving a class when she was summoned to meet the Master back in the dojo.

“I know you can fight,” the Master told her. “You’ve proven yourself time after time. That was not the point of the exercise, was it Padawan?”

“I know,”
Fiach admitted. “But they–”

The Master cut across Fiach’s words. “We all have our individual strengths and weaknesses. I am aware of your partner’s. And the exercise was for you to discover them. You merge with their strengths and cover their weakness. And they do the same. Together, the two of you are stronger than as individuals, yes?”

“They did no better than I did,”
Fiach said. She realised instantly she sounded petulant, but she couldn’t help herself. She still blamed the other Padawan for their failure. It was their single-mindedness that meant Fiach could not partner with them.

“We are speaking of you, not them. Remember, Fiach, the fear of looking like a fool is never a reason to do something. Or not do it. It is a fear born in weakness.”

Fiach nodded. She knew better than to continue to challenge the Master and – deep down – she knew they were right.

"When I was your age, there were around ten thousand Jedi Knights defending the galaxy. We had small outposts, temples, spread throughout the stars."
— Kanan to Ezra

SOMEWHERE IN THE OUTER RIM

Often, Fiach imagined what the last days of the Republic had been like. Would her life have been different? Would she have been identified sooner? Maybe se would have been at a Jedi Temple from a very young age? And if the Temples existed, where are they now? Or rather, why hadn’t they found them?

Her time in the library answered one of the questions. The Empire sought out the temples and destroyed many. Many, but not all. Fiach’s present task was to find one — by using the Force.

So she sat in space, meditating, willing the Force to guide her to one of them.

The instructions she’d been given when the brief was shared with her was precise…but to Fiach, entirely unhelpful.

“Trust in yourself,” she’d been told, “and trust the Force.”

Wholly reasonable, wholly possible, but wholly unnerving at the same time. So, she sat here in deep space, in a long-range scout ship, her eyes closed, meditating.

As the teachers at the academy would always say, ‘Do. Or do not. There is no try.’

The problem was she didn't know precisely what she was looking for. Some imposing Jedi structure like the images she’d seen of Coruscant in its hey-day? Or a tree and some small huts, like on Ahch-To?

Did buildings have Force auras in the way that people or kyber crystals did? Maybe there was a residual presence? Fiach, not for the first time, had more questions than answers.

Even in space, Fiach could feel the Force. It was different here of course. She could not feel it in the flora and fauna — because there was none. But she imagined there was, and allowed her senses to drift outwards from the ship. She felt nothing specific — yet still felt attached to the Force.

And then she sensed it. Not a building but something akin to a bright light. A beacon for the Force. Or was that from the Force?

She opened her eyes and instinctively her hands went to the controls and she navigated towards the source of the energy.

Her navigation was instinctive and before long, she was approaching a rocky planet in the Outer Rim Territories, on the edge of the Unknown Regions. As she approached it, she paid no heed to any map. The name of the planet was -- at present -- immaterial. What mattered to the young Padawan was if she was simply on a wild Bantha chase or if the terrestrial planet ahead of her that appeared to have rocky terrain, covered in cliffs and mountains did indeed hold a Jedi presence in the past, and if so, if it was still inhabitable.

Slowly but surely, Fiach felt herself getting closer and closer to the source of whatever was calling to her through the Force. Or perhaps it was the Force, she still could not tell.

Finally, her vision was not of a speck of light but a planet. On the face of it, a bland planet of average size, with average gravity, and an average atmosphere. Its topography showed the usual landscape variations — but with a significant amount of mountains.

Skeins of clouds embroidered white patterns in the sky below. Fiach used the controls instinctively to alter the ship’s vector and plow into the atmosphere at a shallow angle. As she descended, she focused on the draw that had brought her this far.

The atmosphere shone blue on the equator as she arrived closer to the surface. Landing might prove a challenge as whatever was calling to her was not adjacent to a suitably large enough landing spot, so she looked around and picked out a suitably flat piece of rock and set her ship down.

The rocky planet was in the Outer Rim Territories, and on the edge of the Unknown Regions. What drew Fiach here was a mystery – although it has something clearly to do with the Force.

She exited her ship and followed her instincts, climbing over small hills and traversing shallow ravines, as the feeling grew stronger and stronger.

Finally, she reached a cliff and, despite significant damage, she could make out what must once have been an outpost. The sensation that drew her here was emanating from the derelict building – that looked as though it had been destroyed deliberately.

As she approached it, she sensed the Light-side of the Force but a disturbance too. Something bad happened here, she was sure of it. This find was something she knew she had to share with her Master.

“Long have Sith empires been built upon the backs of slaves.”
― Darth Sidious

SOMEWHERE IN TREEMA

Fiach hung from a bent pipe in some old factory, her arms extended above her, her wrists cuffed. Night had clearly fallen, given the occasional ray of moonlight permeated the irregular holes in the ceiling and walls of the derelict building. She slowly opened her eyes and saw a small table and chair set in front of her. On the table was her utility belt and her saber. Did they know she was a member of the Jedi Order? And who were they?

As she mused these questions, a fresh wave of black washed over her and she fell back into unconsciousness.

“I hate you.”

The words woke Fiach with a start, given they were spoken directly into her left ear.

“Even unconscious you look smug. And trust me: I know smugness well. And you’ve kept me waiting and I want answers. I’m not a patient man.”

“Wakey-wakey,” he added, in a jovial tone. “Time to move and time to shake-y.”

He turned his back on Fiach, and she opened one eye enough to see her belt and saber are still on the table.

“My mother used to say that. Sweet woman. If I didn't get out of bed fast enough, her sweetness turned rather sour, though, and she would whip me with a broom. But I don't need to hit you with a broom, do I? You’re awake.”

“Yes, I’m awake,”
Fiach said with a mouth that felt second-hand to her. She opened and then re-closed her eyes and connected with the Force.

“Stay awake,” the slaver barked.

Fiach’s eyes snapped open and her mind began to whirr.

“Hello, Fiach.” The use of her name was clearly intentional, used to gain a reaction. Sadly, he was dealing with someone who didn’t do emotions. Regardless, he laughed. A small, sad sound. “Surprised I know your name? I know so much about you.”

Fiach’s face betrayed no emotions as her mind began endless calculations. How did he know her name? Were her parents safe?

“Your little friend told me all about you.”

Philax. Of course. They were hardly friends, but they knew enough about each other to give some basic information.

“I put a bounty on your head you know.”

Fiach remained silent. Her eyes darted around the old factory, checking out escape routes. Then she closed her eyes and used the Force to sense her surroundings. She was still a Padawan but her range – given it was an open space – told her there were no other people in the building. Of course, guards might be on sentry outside.

Her eyes opened wide as she received a punch in the ribs.

“I said, no sleeping!”

“Why am I here?”
It was her throat now that felt foreign to her and her voice was raspy and a couple of octaves below her usual pitch. It made her sound older than her actual years.

“I told you, I have questions.”

The longer the conversation went and he didn’t mention her parents, the more she was sure they were still safe. But she couldn’t be sure and decided to play along until she was sure. “We all have questions. It’s a part of being sentient apparently”

Her already sore ribs received another punch. She surpressed a smile. Angered, he was far more likely to share information unwittingly.

“OK,”
she said, in a measured tone. “But please be quick, I haven’t got all day. Errands to run and all that.” In truth, she’d forgotten why she was here but as her subconscious prompted her conscious brain, she realised it had been a trap. And it was the second time she’d fallen for it.

“Later,” he said, possibly appreciating his lack of cool was a mistake. He walked behind Fiach and a stun baton jab to her back rendered her unconscious once more.

Before her eyes opened, Fiach once more sensed her surroundings. Her saber was still there – that connection to her kyber crystals allowing her to feel its presence. And he was here too, sitting on the chair. Opening her eyes, she saw the dust motes that told her it was now daylight, but she could not tell if it was the following day or many days later.

She took a sharp intake of breath and relaxed. In a sense she was hungry and thirsty but the Force gave her strength in a way he clearly could not understand. And the fact he’d not mentioned her saber or the Jedi suggested he was oblivious of what she was or what lay on the table beside him.

“OK,” he said, breaking the silence. “Let’s cut to the chase. Who else knows about my little operation?”

Fiach fixed him with a stare. “I don’t know. For a start, I have no idea which operation you are referring to and secondly I don’t know how many people you may have told.”

He stood and closed the gap between them at pace. And a jab in the ribs with the shock setting of the stun baton he now held demonstrated how her response irked him.

“I am the one in charge,” he said slowly, through gritted teeth.

He’s doing his best to remain calm, Fiach mused. He needs information, that’s for sure. Once she’d left Klatooine, she’d informed the Jedi Order of his slave-ring and was assured they would deal with it. But she’d been forbidden to pursue the matter. It was part of her training to let go of things. To avoid personal involvement.

“Indeed, you are,” she replied, coolly.

“We shall start again. Who did you tell about the plans I told you of on the roof of this very factory?”

Of course, Fiach could have been pedantic about not knowing which factory this was, but she knew when to draw the line in antagonising him. For she too needed information.

“I told just one person. Not here. Not on Klatooine. A person of no significance to you and someone who would never come here to interfere with your illegal trade.” Of course, every word of which was true.

“A name.”

“I presume you mean the name of the person I told. In which case I can tell you, but how you can ever know the truth of the answer, I don’t know. So, what’s the point?”

“I have your little friend.”

So, that was his bargaining chip. Philax. Her parents were safe, else he would have used them – given they were far more valuable to her than the young girl. Except not any longer. As a member of the Jedi Order, she had been trained to treat all life as equal. It was an emotive response to rank people you knew by importance to you. And yes, Jedi were allowed emotions but they did not interfere or impact on decisions. Yet this new fact made things no less awkward. She owed Philax as much as she did her two fathers. Maybe more, as she clearly chose to withhold the information from the slaver.

“If you mean Philax, what makes you think she’s my friend. Or that I even believe you have her?”

The slaver produced a small communications device from his pocket.

“Bring her in.”

Moments later, the girl – now with neon pink hair – was dragged in by a guard. She wore chains around her wrists and ankles and shuffled along as fast as she could. Somehow Fiach could feel her pain – it was no act – and the bruises and cuts on her body and face were real, not make-up. Fiach gained instant respect and admiration for Philax. She’d clearly been mistreated and yet had not given up Fiach’s most intimate secrets.

“Sorry,” Philax said.

“That’s OK,” Fiach said. “Everything will be fine.”

The sound of the slaver’s laughter echoed around the empty factory. He wiped away an imaginary tear from his eye with the cuff of his jacket. “Listen to yourself, do you honestly believe everything will turn out fine?”

Fiach closed her eyes momentarily. The shackles on her wrist were electronic. Using the Force, she overloaded their circuitry, as she had been trained to do. And the moment the bracelets opened, she moved at lightning speed. She summoned her saber to her hand and threw the hilt directly at the guard holding Philax. It hit him squarely between the eyes, instantly knocking him out.

Then she turned her attention on the slaver. As he began to draw a blaster, she performed a roundhouse kick, knocking it out of his grasp and sending it skidding across the duracrete floor.

He still had his stun baton and Fiach now stepped in close and before he could tag her with it, she grabbed his wrist and – using the Force – applied sufficient strength to turn it on its owner. With a number of involuntary twitches, he fell to the floor.

She turned to look at Philax, her usual smile now back on her face. “See, I told you everything would be fine.” And she hadn’t even activated her saber, thus keeping her identity and the presence of the Jedi Order secret.

“We can call this in as a double-kidnapping and actual bodily harm.”

“The authorities won’t take it seriously. He’ll just bribe them to turn the other way.”
She gave a scornful look at the prone slaver.

“Trust me,” Fiach said. “I think they’ll listen this time.”

Lessons in being a Jedi came, she mused as she helped Philax to her feet, in the most mysterious ways.

“This time, let go your conscious self and act on instinct.”

JEDI ACADEMY

If there was one Force ability Fiach wanted to learn as much as she could about, it was Force Sight. It had never been an innate skill for the Padawan, and had taken a few lessons to truly understand not only the ‘how’ but the practical application too.

But once she had, she never looked back. The ability that to ‘see’ her surroundings through use of the Force had become an invaluable tool, and so it was one she practiced at every opportunity.

Today she was undertaking a simple test. She was blindfolded and in a maze. It would be hard enough to exit the labyrinth with eyesight available, let alone in complete darkness.

And, to cap it all, she was informed as she entered the maze that there were tasks and puzzles to solve as she progressed.

So, she placed the soft material around her head and tied it in a form bow, before placing a silken, loose-fitting bag over her head too. Sure she could no longer see anything, she nodded her head and heard the door in front of her swish open and she stepped through into the dark unknown.

Fiach wondered what it would be like to be born with the gift of Force Sight – albeit they had this ability at a cost. Aware she was mentally wandering, she closed her eyes behind the blindfold and connected with the Force.

Like many of the abilities they were taught, Force Sight was hard to explain – and had to be learned by trial and error. For Fiach, and her technological upbringing, she often experienced things through this lens. So, when she felt the Force flow through her and sensed how it connected to the wider world, she saw – in her mind’s eye – something akin to a radar.

She had 360-degree visibility, albeit she saw block shapes in monochrome, as opposed to colours and textures. She could make out the walls of the maze easily – and anything living stood out much brighter than the surroundings. Droids, on the other hand, were much harder to perceive – given they were not living – and she saw these as null points in her radar, and it was their silhouette that told her what they were.

Confident she could see her way ahead, she began to navigate the maze.

Fiach always wondered – both on an intellectual level and a practical one – where Force Sight ended and Force Sense began. They seemed, to the Padawan at least, to overlap. Right now, however, she was entirely focused on what she could ‘see’ with the Force. She was not sensing danger for example but concentrating entirely on her physical surroundings. She was sure she was not going to face anything life-threatening, but it would not be as simple as wandering around a maze.

And it seemed as though the task would get progressively harder. Initially she came across some steps up and down and a lowering of the ceiling, forcing her to duck down. Then came a few trenches, that she had to jump across. Next she encountered a chasm far too wide to jump across. Clearly, she was expected to find a solution to the puzzle.

And after a few minutes, she found it – a switch on the far wall that, when activated, engaged a temporary bridge that extended from beneath her feet.

The puzzles did, as Fiach expected, get more challenging. None were life-threatening but their complexity grew – especially as she required her focus to keep her Force Sight engaged in order to progress.

Finally, she felt a cool breeze in her face and presumed she was close to an exit. She was about to stride down what she supposed was a final corridor when she stopped abruptly. Ahead of her was something…but nothing substantial. She took a deep breath and emptied her mind, giving all of her attention to her Force Sight. What appeared an empty corridor blurred and when it came back into focus she was many, many tiny wires strung across the passageway. They were at different heights and angles and were so fine that they could easily have been missed.

Slowly and surely she negotiated each one – unsure what the penalty might be for touching a thread.

It took what felt like an eternity. The strands strung across the passage-way were hard enough to make your way through in broad daylight, Fiach mused, let alone blind-folded and reliant on the Force to see the string no wider than a few micrometres.

This was, quite justifiably, the hardest of the tests she had to face. The problem was significantly harder to see than anything that had gone before and the physical test was just as challenging. Fortunately, she was supple and flexible and strong and so was able to bend her body into contorted positions as well as balance on toes and at one point her fingers in order to travel along the corridor.

Finally she reached a doorway and opening it, felt sunlight on her face, which meant she had exited the maze. She did not immediately remove the blindfold however, and checked for any final tests before taking it off.

As she did, she jumped. Standing in front of her was one of the Jedi Masters.

“But…”
she said and was lost for words.

The Jedi chuckled. “You have learned much, but more still have you to understand. Such as how to hide your presence from the Force, and equally how to spot when someone has.”

And she knew it was another lesson for another day.
