Kyber Poaching
PvP Enabled, Death not Enabled
Open to Jedi, 5 Syndicates, and Independents

The massive expanse of the kyber caves defied quick comprehension. It had caverns wide enough to fit a small ship inside, terraced stone and intersecting walkways that seemed formed entirely out of kyberite. Motes of dust hung lazily in the air, illuminated by the omnidirectional glow of exposed kyber, colors fluctuating from a translucent white to pale greens, blues, and pinks.

But there were scars. Broken shards of dead, lifeless kyber crystal littered across the ground, mixed with refuse of common stone and dirt. The walls and floors bore angular, jagged marks of industry, and the beasts that took such a massive toll from the cave were currently inert. Great hulking durasteel creations that only could have been assembled inside, not transported, wielding wicked digging implements that could cut deep into the spine of Ossus, maiming it internally just as it was scorched on the surface.

Rishe thought the caves would have been a source of beauty and reverence, but already, a significant portion of its contents had been extracted. The Jedi had to walk past a quarter kilometer of depleted stone and half-deconstructed machines to reach the current progress of the mining. With the mining came the death of this cave, that hum and song in the Force from kyber that would have been present was dead and silent anywhere they'd been crushed and chiseled out.

Yet the cause of the damage was not yet anywhere to be seen. If the intruders had just been Ysanna, they would have been shot near the entrance. But with Jedi approaching, the miners and workers seem to have retreated further inwards, hastily abandoning their tools. And behind any machine, in the midst of any of the opaque crystals or rock formations the hired security force for these miners could be waiting. And if they were well informed, they'd be aware that the Jedi were much less likely to sense them with the noise of living, active kyber formations nearby. And for some types, well... Jedi couldn't sense droids.

"Master Ryker?" Rishe questioned, looking over to the bearded Knight. The padawan had dark circles under her eyes - fatigue from sleepless nights spent planning and working on the Ossus restoration, though her robes were as carefully maintained as usual. "You've dealt with kyber smugglers before. Why are they hiding from us? They're only dragging this out longer than it needs to be."

The group she'd chosen - that was still a strange concept, she was in charge of something? - was self explanatory. Ryker for his experience. Herself, since this was a volatile situation and she felt it needed to be done right. And Master Mikko. She probably couldn't get rid of him. But between the three Jedi, the dozen or so strong security force couldn't be much of a problem. Though, she might have wanted to account for reinforcements. The Jedi have been on Ossus for a week now.

I didn't mention Hannibal because I wasn't certain you wanted to still include them, Teatime. If you still want in, feel free to have him post like he's been there the whole time within the next round of posts.

Let me know if there are any issues with how this started or how it could have been done better. I haven't done a PvP thread before or even started one, and I figured this is a decent enough setup for everyone to put their character in a preferred position before an ambush, mexican standoff, or conversation/parlay if it arises.

Altogether, this assignment on Ossus was a bad pick. The pay was good enough to get Kyp not to quit but not quite so good that it made up for the complete lack of any sort of action whatsoever. The most he'd done since getting here was shooting a cave rat that had crawled too close to him. The rest of the time had been comprised of standing around and looking intimidating while the miners went about their business. For all their s swagger and swashbuckling, smugglers were boring to work for.

But that all changed when klaxon alarms sounded throughout the facility and mines indicating an intruder. Smiling underneath his helmet, Kyp readied his blaster rifle and hurriedly shooed away the lingering miners.

Not knowing the scope of this intrusion or the armament of the invaders, Kyp gingerly approached the area where security said the intruders currently were. He might like a good fight but he wasn't stupid. Plus, this being a kyber cave meant that a Sith or Jedi force wasn't out of the realm of possibility. Instead of taking the turbolift down to where the assembled Jedi were, Kyp crept along the main tunnel leading into the mining area and hid behind a mining cart about a hundred and fifty yards from the nearest Jedi. He couldn't yet see the Jedi but he could hear when they spoke. For now, he decided to wait.

It only made sense for Byron to be on this mission. He had voiced an interest and some knowledge of the mining industry. His home system of Contruum had its fair share of mining. Learning about it was common place and after going to school for ship production, there were numerous benefits for him to research the subject. Now it brought a sense of wisdom though it was still limited compared to an actual worker of such a place.

The Knight was wearing more Jedi appropriate attire for once. His right hip had his custom crafted blaster and his other regular gear, over which he wore a hooded poncho though the hood was not up at the moment. There was no point in him trying to get further among the miners by cloaking himself. Going unnoticed was never Byron's bailiwick. Instead he reached outwards through the force for intent and danger rather than hide.

"Yeah?" He murmured in response to the Padawan's question as he looked around. There were plenty of reasons why people could be a part of this operation. Not everyone was where they were by choice or convenience. Some people didn't care about the why but Byron was glad Rishe was curious. "A known smuggler isn't a very good smuggler in my opinion." He knew that wouldn't be a satisfying answer but he saw a possibly learning opportunity.

"You've never tried to catch piranha eels before have you?" His head turned towards one of the obvious first responders taking cover ahead. "The trick is luring them without starting a feeding frenzy."

Being a droid at times had its perks. You don't need to eat, except at times you have to recharge your batteries; no sleeping, meaning that you could stay on watch for days in a row... The alarms snapped BX out of his thoughts, and he took his DLT-20A longblaster, loading it as he stood up from the small column of kyberite he was sat on.

He stepped forward, slowly approaching the sounds of the voices of two people. A man, and a young woman, judging from the pitch. He hid behind a tall kyber formation, peeking from behind it just enough to keep an eye on the situation. He whispered in his holocom: "At least two people approaching. Get ready for an ambush." The radio frequency was tuned on any people who he worked with to surveil the mining, so Kyp and others.

Whatever the Knight had seen, Rishe didn't see it. Though she could guess at what he meant and how to follow a gaze. She folded her arms as they walked, her hands slipping into the sleeves of her robe. It was a defensive gesture in more than one way, blocking the body off in a social situation, and also because she holstered her lightsaber on her right arm, hidden from casual view by the sleeve. Her hands found the warm, familiar metal, and a button clicked on synthetic leather as she loosened the strap around it, her gait subtly shifting as her body tensed, preparing.

"I haven't caught any before, no." Rishe replied, keeping her gaze on the pathway. She relied heavily on the Force despite having a weaker presence within it, so she usually trusted it to reveal a threat before her eyes would. "We might not need to lure or risk a frenzy, though. Maybe the Eels might want to talk."

"But... if not. How many are there? And how do we lure them?"
She asked. Like the Knight, she cast her mind out in the Force, but disturbingly didn't seem to feel anything. The threads and lights that typically marked emotions, experiences, and other minds weren't anywhere to be seen. The crystal deposits seemed to wash it out. There wasn't a warning, she didn't have a bad feeling. It was strange - the Knight might have seen something, but the Force gave her no such warning.

She could tell they might be preparing to strike, but the smallest part of her respected them for evacuating the miners. If you were going to fight the Jedi, unscrupulous types might have used them as hostages or leverage. But they were cleared out.

There was a sickly, cold feeling of dread and sudden realization running down her spine. She thrust her open left hand out, trying to bar Byron from moving forward as she stopped as well.

"They've cleared out all of the miners. What if we're the ones being lured? Would you put it past them to rig the caves or some of this equipment to blow when we walk past?" She asks, attributing to the silence and the absence of life a plan more elaborate than might be necessary. She held a high opinion of the Jedi in general, or a low opinion of non force-sensitives who were forced to fight them.

Byron gave Rishe a side long glance after her response about the eels. It sounded naive to think the people here wanted to talk at their current situation. If they wanted to be diplomatic then the Jedi should have approached this differently at the beginning. Byron thought the Padawan would have had a better idea than walking into the lions den and hope they were the hosting type that wanted to have a chat rather than the greedy, opportunistic denizens that were moving into position.

"They already know we're here." He repeated the fact outloud. There was no point in a lure. The lesson of the metaphor was lost on Rishe it seemed and so was the nature of mercenaries. Instead she took it too literally and thought of it as a plan of action. Byron had tried to impart some wisdom for the situation with the words but there wasn't time to go through it.

The two Jedi's voice echoed but so did the metallic clanking of approaching foot steps. The reverberations through the confining spaces of the tunnels, despite their temporary open areas, were still fairly close. With his senses reaching outwards, he opened himself up and didn't detect a presence from the droid. But that didn't mean Byron didn't know they were there. It was hard to miss. With the miners having left the immediate area it made detecting what remained far more easily.

"We're not." He answered as a matter of fact. "...and no." He wouldn't put it past them to booby trap if they knew they were coming. But that didn't change anything since in the moment they still had to move forward. Otherwise they had just come here just to turn back.

"Clear your mind, Padawan Vakren. You're looking for danger where there isn't any." There was nothing they could do to stop an unperceivable attack and fretting over it was worse than nothing. But the Jedi had an extra sense that gave them a luxury many others lacked.

" You're letting your fear keep you from focusing on what really is a threat. Assume nothing. Accept everything." This was the state of the galaxy. The mercenaries down the tunnels here to defend, Byron a knight, here to meet them appropriately. He thought about a waterfall on Ajan Kloss, one Maser Grayza had made him run to and then meditate under. After this the Knight would offer to take the Padawan somewhere similar and maybe impart some wisdom then.

Padawan. Well, now that changed things. 166 knew what that meant: extra credits from taking a lightsaber from one of these Jedi. Indeed, the two knew they were expected, but they didn't know what may attack them. The droid waited them there, hidden, and then he stepped out from his hideaway. He was like five or so meters from the two, his longblaster primed at them. "Jedi. Stop right there. Leave this mine, and no one will get hurt. Just... a request: surrender your lightsabers. Even just one of you" he said. His voice was deep and mechanical, of course.

They had in front, of course, a BX-series commando droid from the Clone Wars. Despite being over two centuries, his chassis was well kept, the paint almost fresh, even though there were still signs of battles, mostly blaster hits and such. He had his DLT-20A longblaster in his arms, aimed at the two, while a DL-44 pistol hung from his belt and a vibrosword was attached on his back.

"Don't listen to the droid - I've been looking forward to fighting a Jedi for a long time now." Kyp said, peeping out from behind his own cover and pointing his own blaster rifle at their direction. He'd quickly prepare to pivot away if anybody shot at him but, for now, he'd wait and see. Much as he'd prefer it if things got violent, he knew his employers were hoping for as little destruction as possible and their needs came first.

Rishe did feel foolish, knowing - or assuming as she often did - that she'd failed some sort of observation or test. "Yes, Master." She replied, her tone seeming tired. Probably due to physical exhaustion from those sleepless nights, but also a weariness of her own inexperience and floundering. It would at least make her receptive to some sort of esoteric waterfall-located sharing of wisdom. She was the type to reach for tradition for comfort and guidance, and nothing could be as traditionally Jedi as that.

But part of her also wished she hadn't been somewhat vindicated by the absurdity of the situation. She'd made poor decisions before, but the mercenaries just willingly exposed themselves to Jedi line of sight. They also didn't seem coordinated. Even if she was still missing pieces of a larger puzzle - like other hidden mercenaries, these two exposing themselves gave her something to work off. Less filling her head with what could be, no further accusations of fear. She'd follow the Knight's advice, and take stock of what was in front of her.

A Clone Wars era Commando Droid. Better maintained than she'd seen before, pointing some sort of blaster rifle at them from half a dozen metres away. If only Xiann was here. And a hundred or so metres away, a Mandalorian with another rifle. And they'd given up the element of surprise. While she wasn't sure if there were others, Ryker would spot them before she did, so she'd focus on them. And if they were going to initiate conflict... well, she'd leave that up to the Knight, who'd be able to take a better first strike and let the Padawan deal with anything left. Force forbid she make a fool of herself and then stumble over trying to attack the other duo. In any case, the Padawan was cautious, at least.

Provided they don't shoot at her immediately, Rishe would angle herself in front of Ryker. He didn't have a saber, though those two didn't know it. She folded her arms again, thanking the Force she'd copied the habit of storing her saber in her sleeve from her old master. It would just seem like a defensive social posture instead of the padawan preparing to draw. "The droid seems to have better self-preservation programming." She quips to the Mandalorian, before turning her attention to the commando droid.

"You need the lightsaber for that bounty, or for some other purpose?" Rishe asked, bemused that she was talking to a droid, "And as for leaving the this behind, the Order needs these caves. I'm sure you've noticed more than a few ships landing in the past week?"

Coming more to the fore he replied after the droid presented itself and requested the sabers. "I'm not going to reach for my blaster. I promise." He said simply and looked at the droid's photoreceptors. His senses focused now on the two revealed threats for any indication they would attack. "But you're not getting our lightsabers." The knight's bearded face shook slightly. The gauntleted hands were ready to move to block if either of the mercenaries attacked. "Leave, before you short circuit."

The saberpistol the BX droid was after sat on the Jedi's left hip and naturally was one he made himself. Even the padawan didn't seem to have noticed it but the mercs still believed they each had a lightsaber. In this case it was also, The case. All the same, he didn't want to technically admit he had a lightsaber on him. Research had gone into crafting the tool after losing the old ones on Kessel. Further intrigue had also brought the Knight to learn a thing or two about small arms and how best to deal with defending against them. The sidearm that sat on his right hip presently was a custom piece, but the Knight intended on keeping his word and refrain from drawing it. The fact that the droid had approached them so closely with a longblaster in its arms made the man wonder if it had faulty programing or some other corrupt part.

BX looked at the two, his glance, of course, impossible to read due to him being a droid. He glanced at the woman with a synthetic chuckle at the remark she gave to the Lepi. "That's not your business, young girl" he said with a slightly threatening tone. "Also, yes, I heard about your presence here. But, aren't there around the galaxy other planets that have crystals like these, hm? Can't you exploit those" he asked. Then he glanced at the man as he threatened. "Hey, that's rude" he said plainly, with a slightly ironic tone.

OOC: Are we waiting on Ginger?

The Lepi Mandalorian tried negotiating and letting the droid and Jedi speak. He really did. But he wasn't overly fond of droids, he didn't like Jedi, and he hated the thought of talking things out over violence so his hand was really forced. Plus, the conversation they were having was so bloody boring. A good fight sometimes required the first shot and Kyp was more than willing to shoot it.

"Enough!" Kyp growled, aiming his blaster at Rishe's legs and firing a quick warning shot at her legs, not really caring if it hit her or not.

"You're the intruders here Jedi. We're not here to bargain with you. Drop your weapons and leave!"

None of them could have ignored the tension that was palpable in the air. Everyone knew that the fight was likely - if not inevitable, if not for the naivete for one padawan. Perhaps she was delaying it for as long as possible with vain hope that the mercenaries really would just walk away.

Rishe remained relaxed despite the droid's comment. She knew it was an obvious barb to get a rise out of her, but her hand still remained on the hilt in her sleeve. "Ossus contains more than crystals. And we aren't the only two Jedi on this planet. The Knight is right - you should leave, this isn't a fight you can win."

The reply came as the distant rapport of a blaster. It was different than being shot at by a remote droid, there was a frantic element of fear, a requirement of action. Her left hand snapped out of her sleeve clutching her saber, a few of her fingers outstretched as the Force nudged against the incoming projectile, throwing it a few degrees off course. With the range of the Mandalorian, the shot not being aimed for a direct hit, and the fact that everyone was already alert and aware, it wasn't difficult even for the power-lacking Padawan. The bolt thwipped and sizzled into the stone a foot from her feet.

Her hand continued in its motion, her lightsaber erupting to life with a guttural groan. Part of her wanted to defuse the situation, but another, less idealistic part reminded her that this wasn't a time for her to hesitate when a shot had already been fired, Force forbid. Adrenaline pumped through her, her temples hammered, and she focused on the droid ahead of her, her features illuminated by a bright yellow. It was within five or so metres, it had a blaster rifle, and she was a Jedi. The Mandalorian's demands came as a clear - but distant order. She was already dashing forward, saber held ahead of her to ward off incoming fire and to prepare for a thrust within a few bounding steps.

She didn't have any moral crisis in scrapping a droid. And of the two combatants, it seemed the least dangerous despite its proximity. If she could junk it quickly, Ryker and her could focus on the Mandalorian, maybe force him to stand down. That was the plan, anyway.

@Darasuum @Fantasy Liver @samdragon

It doesn't seem like they've been active in about a week and a half, I figure we can stop pinging them. It's unfortunate, but the thread's still open, and they or any other relevant character can jump in at any time, assuming they do the standard like, one post to arrive, one post to join the fight thing? I'm not sure how that works.

The violent nature of the Mandalorian rising to the top and manifesting itself into a blaster bolt. Both off Byron's hands rose in response, their fingers splayed out for a moment and grabbed ahold of the elongated blaster barrel in the commando droid's hands before it could fire a shot. The invisible power would hold onto the weapon to keep its muzzle pointed away from the jedi and also force the droid's guard wide open for Rishe to take advantage of.

The Mandalorian was a fair distance away at over a hundred meters just from how Byron eyeballed them. It had seemed funny for the lepi to challenge him from so far away earlier and yet now try to take pot shots while the one with the longblaster was so close. If the Mandalorian wanted to continue firing on the padawan he would be more likely to hit the droid than Rishe. His words were clear through the kyber caves as were his actions. They were not looking to talk anymore.

"YOU KRIFFING IDIOT AT LEAST YOU COULD HAVE CLOSED UP BEFORE SHOOTING!" the droid yelled back at the Lepi, and tried to shoot, although he realized that his blaster was being forcefully (pun intended) moved away, so he let the weapon go and boosted himself backwards, using his jump boots to propel himself backwards for several meters, trying to keep as much distance as he could between himself and the two Jedi. After moving for roughly 10 meters backwards, he quickly pulled out his DL-44 blaster and shot two shots towards each of the Jedi.

With BX 166 blasting out of the way, Kyp was now even more clear to take the shot. He might have been 100 meters away but his A280 had a maximum range of 150 meters. Coupled with his own skills in marksmanship, the Lepi Mandalorian was feeling comfortable about the level of distance between him and the Jedi. Using the HUD in his helmet and tracking the Jedi's movement, he fired one shot after another at Byron's legs and feet.

If the droid was going to make it so obvious it was flustered, Rishe was happy to take advantage. As it jumped backwards, she pursued on foot, taking advantage of her running speed to meet it as it landed and took another pair of shots.

Both were shunted aside with individual swipes of the saber as she pressed on the droid who had so mistakenly approached the Jedi on foot earlier. With a simple Form I strike, she brought the saber in an upwards arc towards the right as she tried to disarm the droid. Literally. She didn't care whether she just sliced the last blaster it had, or took the things entire arm at the elbow.

The telekinetic grip Byron had on the droid's longblaster resulted in what he expected. The weapon was released by the droid as it hopped back, realizing the situation. The Knight's left hand relaxed, letting the weapon clatter on the ground below where it had hung suspended. Byron moved with Rishe as she pressed the attack. But they were in tunnels and there was only so much of an angle either of the defenders to work with.

His body quickened with the force and in a seeming blur the unarmored jedi force sprinted to avoid the blaster impacts meant for his lower extremities. Even so, he kept his arms up to block other impacts his mobile form. Holes riddled the cave grounds and walls where the man had been heartbeat earlier.

The pistol brandished by the droid was also turned away from the padawan toward the knight. Take that opportunity Rishe. He thought to himself. she was within striking distance.

Both of Byron's hands were still empty, wrapped in the matukai gauntlets he had trained with extensively since joining the Jedi Order. They weren't just shock boxing gloves, like the ones he had used in college. The muscular frame of the Knight would stay true to what he said earlier and not draw his other weapons. The blaster bolts from the DL-44 would hit the outer forearm of the Jedi as he moved to block the bolts meant for him. To the droid and the Mandalorian it would seem like shots impacting his arms had landed, holes burnt into the sleeves and rapidly cooling on the Knight's outfit. Perhaps if they were familiar with the matuaki they would understand the nature of his equipment and why they should reconsider their line of work.

Tal cursed as he ran back to the mine. The one and singular time he snuck off to have a lewd holocall with his woman, the mine was attacked. Thankfully, he had enough sense to actually pull his armor back on. Unfortunately, the intruders fit two of the three deadly requirements: They had interrupted his love life and they were Jedi. To make it a trifecta, one of them would have to have two left hands with six fingers each. With that being improbable, they likely wouldn't see the unholiest of fires today. That said, he was the biggest mad.

He had a half decent crew there too. A commando droid that was fully operational and a Mandalorian. So he almost felt at home..ish. Racing his way down a hill, he would heft Rayna, currently in her sniper iteration. "Boxy, Karp. It's Tal, on the way! Lure them deeper in, I'm coming up behind them. I can blow the entrance, the miners have some secondary shafts for exfil." He'd say over comms. He kept his pace just before he hit the cavern. Didn't want that pesky sound carrying. He took a quick pause to shift Rayna from Sniper to Assault, his favorite kind of crime.

Once set, he entered the cavern. Deactivating the comm, he cursed again. "Kriffin Jedi.. Once we kill ya, I'm gonna go back to make -another- call. Damn Cod-blockers.." Thankfully the entrance and the early mining left the caverns wide and well, rather beautiful. Easy for a good shot. Up ahead he could hear some fighting, oh.. he was soooo close.

The droid cursed as he took another couple steps back while he took out his vibroblade, taking a guard position as he dodged the lightsaber. He looked at the young woman, staring in her eyes with his photoreceptors like to challenge her. "I may be old, but I still have my agility and training against your tactics and styles, Jedi" he said, trying to taunt her.
