”You have nothing to lose but your chains!”
🔊

Once, when she had asked her grandmother where their family name had come from, she had responded that it had just sounded good to her at the time. She had told her how she had wound up on Corulag and never knew her parents, so she simply chose to add “La” to the end of her existing name. It probably meant something in Ryl, but that language was never her strong suit.

And so she was Lakay’la, granddaughter of Io’la and daughter of Chee’la and Tol’la; both strong members of Corulag’s Orbital Transports Union. Her fathers had met one another both aboard the same research station, one serving as a mechanic and the other as a port overseer. Both had known the oppressive struggle of trying to make ends meet upon long hours and unfair wages, so together they made the decision to join the Union so they could fight for a difference and before long they had fallen in love.

As far as childhoods went, Lakay’la’s was relatively happy yet rather mundane. She won no great victories, felt no strong ties to any but her immediate family, nor even cared much to plan for her own future. For the young Twi’leki/human hybrid, the Force was not a bursting geyser of power but a gentle trickle of something vaguely unreachable. It was never more than a curiosity. It took significant effort to even cause something to shake and was subsequently ignored as easily as a decent affinity for sports; for Lakay’la, there were always either more important or more enjoyable things to do.

Her upbringing was mostly spent carving out future aches and pains in a veritable slew of various occupations and labors. Lakay’la bounced between Corulag’s surface and its orbiting stations throughout her years, hauling cargo or selling brand-name products or some other monotonous task that was never as well-paid as it was demeaning. She was just one of many in a galactic workforce, trying to live her life as well as she could.

------

Sometime in her twentieth year, everything in the girl’s life took an abrupt and drastic turn. Lakay’la arrived home one day to find that one of her fathers had been horribly injured on the job and lay in critical condition. Though he eventually managed to pull through, the poor human had lost both his left leg and his left arm. For months the family struggled with the sudden lack of the household’s largest income and before long it became too unbearable for the proud father who then made the difficult decision to finance robotic replacements so that he could work once more. Immediately, the La family found themselves trapped within a web of debt and worry surrounding the harsh payments.

It came to light a year later that her father’s accident had been in fact orchestrated by a man the La family had once thought was a close friend. In truth, the caring father had been put into a dangerous situation intentionally after he had organized a few fairly successful rallies and being deemed a threat to “company assets”. A corporate mercenary had been hired to infiltrate and get close to many of the Union leaders including Lakay’la’s father, win their trust, then attempt to convince workers that the Orbital Transports Union was nothing more than another greedy organization.

Lakay’la had never before felt such raw fury at a single person and found herself hunting down the infiltrator and viciously attacking him in the street. While she proved no match for the experienced fighter, a sudden wave of Force from the girl sent him crashing into a wall and nearly fractured his skull upon impact. Lakay’la, traumatized by what she had just done and fearing retaliation against her family, felt that her only remaining option was to flee Corulag for good.

------

With no other choice or idea of where to go next, Lakay’la realized there was a place she might be accepted if she could but get there in one piece. The young girl hitchhiked, bribed, charmed, and snuck her way all the way across the galaxy to finally end up right where she really belonged.

------

Under the Jedi Order, Lakay’la has grown more than she ever thought she could…but true learning never truly ends.
