Nar Shaddaa | 2100 | Preef's Palace | Planning Room

The planning room of the former Hutt Palace on Nar Shaddaa was lit up by a large holo-projector. Windows were closed and guards had been sent away. Preef himself, a rare sight lately, stood in the middle of the room pointing at various parts of the projected image, rotated it and muttered some words to himself. "Yes, yes that should work." This was a man clearly in his element. The stick-up artist, the robber of farms, trains, banks all the way to casino's and evidence vaults. He was much more at home planning this than he was running a syndicate, and it showed.

For a moment his five guests were left standing there, looking at Preef looking at a map, without a word of welcome from the rodian. Although he might appear indifferent to their presence he had, in fact, handpicked them to be part of his new crew. A crew that he had great unextinguishable plans for. Finally he looked down from the map, picked up the cigarra that had been smouldering in an ashtray on one of the side tables and faced his guests. "Thank you all for coming," he smiled, but if the HoloMovies about him had taught them anything it was that his smile could both be heartfelt and a forebode to lightning-fast draw of his equally legendary peacemaker.

First he nodded towards Gareth, who had been with him for years now and was a trusted member of his most inner circle: the Zaa Fenn Crime Family. The others were unfamiliar, but came highly recommended. "As you know I used to roll with Marissa Hesse and Kel Dryden. I was the blaster and they were my brains and my getaway pilot." he paused to look to both sides of where he was standing, but there was no one, no proverbial right and left hand, not anymore. "Marissa, she runs the business now. Kel and his Black Swift have disappeared in the treacherous black of space. So," there was that smile again, "I'm giving you the opportunity to replace them."

At this point a light on a nearby table lit up, showing five almost identical keycards. "You'll have your own rooms in the palace. You drink, eat and party for free on the Smuggler's Moon." That sounds way too good to be true, doesn't it? Preef Callo offering you the spare bedrooms in his own home and letting you do everything for free on the biggest pleasure-dome in the galaxy? What's the catch? "but more importantly, and you'll like this-" the holo-projector quickly flickered through a host of high value targets before ending up with a rotating golden image of the Smuggler's Moon itself. By the time his guests would look at Preef gain he had the cigarra between his lips, "-you get the chance to go down in history as the best heist crew the galaxy has ever seen."

The rodian chuckled and smoke temporarily covered his face before he stepped through it and closer to his guests. He knew Gareth would be in. He was family and as crazy as they got. The others.. well, they needed to confirm their interest. "What do you say? Want to become a living legend like me?"

"15,000.00." Valden snarled at the diminutive Sullustan opposite him. Flanked on either side by two armed and armoured enforcers from his gang, Valden was rather enjoying this particular dressing down. "Consider it interest. You've got until the next cycle, or it doubles. Now get out." he picked the diminutive alien up and pushed them away.

The shadow of Preefs Palace was one hell of a place to do business.

Valden calmed himself, and walked into the palace, leaving his two heavies outside as requested. Stalking into the building, he reached out into the force, and felt nobody else with his abilities present - regardless, he masked his presence and headed into the meeting room. Preef was a legend, Valden knew that for a fact - yet like all legends, he was always seeking to climb higher, and keep the knives out of his own back.

The opportunity he was providing them was not one to be ignored, he was offered the fast-track to fame, something Valden, was pretty keen on.

"A formidable proposal Mr. Callo." his calm voice resonated across the room as he walked forward, addressing the Rodian directly "There is no doubt that the Syndicates are on the back foot, but we must step forward and seize the day." he paused, as if for effect "Tell me more."

For most of Pellios's life he had kept a low profile. That was not to say he did not take risks. As a youth the adventure and excitment of the underworld life style sustained him. As the years had gone on the Devaronian had lost sight of the joys that had once brought a regular grin to his face. Hearing what the famed Preef Callo had to say fanned the embers of Pellios's spirit and in doing so, made the silver haired smuggler smile.

"I don't know about living legend. I like the first part so I can enjoy the second. But yeah. I'm in." The smile persisted over the dapper pilot's wise expression. Jannessa was going to give him flak and probably call him a hypocrite for doing this sort of thing but that was to be expected. The Chuckle Wagon was a trusty ship but it was not in the same league as the Black Swift. At least, not with what Pellios had heard about it racing over Cantonica. Getting the opportunity that someone like Kel Driden got would certainly make the rest of his life comfortable and there was no arguing with that.

Pellios looked at the others Preef had assembled. The famous gunslinger had a reputation with both good and bad said about him. Most everyone else he did not know. Like any other job, he was trusting his employer to have good judgement on his other hirlings. The scoundrel would prefer it if they all could get along.

Nar Shaddaa. It had been just over a year since Aska last saw her glittering skyscrapers and what were once bustling starports, the air traffic severely diminished as a direct repercussion of the rampant and unchecked virus that was dominating the moon’s lower levels. Even though the Smuggler’s Moon was no longer under control of the Hutt clans and the legendary gunslinger Preef Callo had begun his campaign of blockading the infected below, there was no denying that the surface-wide city was but a shadow of its former self. This alone was enough to keep most people away, Aska’s own painful memories casting further doubt of her return as the faces of Deskar and Quinri flashed in her mind, but only a fool turned down an invitation to Callo’s personal mansion. The invitation was shared with an old friend, of whom she expected to meet with once she arrived.

Aska was still adjusting to the exo-spine she had implanted many weeks ago but she was going stir crazy sitting around doing nothing. She was always on the move, jumping from job to job, so sitting around in that wretched hoverchair had more than worn away at her sanity. She felt as though she was rotting away into nothing. She needed action and this collection of gangsters and thugs promised just that and more; working with Preef Callo in itself would bolster anyone’s reputation. Aska’s own was already becoming formidable but she was hungry for more. After her seclusion from her injury, it further cemented her ambitions. She wanted the galaxy to know her name, a feat that couldn’t be acquired by simply sitting idle.

So here she stood, shifting uncomfortably as she coped with her mechanical prosthetic. Dressed in a ‘new-to-her’ green leather jacket and black pants, hood drawn over the back of her head to hide the tip of the exo-spine that was implanted into the nape of her neck, she listened intently as the household name offered his greeting. Taking a drag of the cigarra of her own, her eyes glistened with an eagerness to see just what it was that Preef had to offer, something equally dangerous as it was grand.

”Credits speak louder than words, Callo. So long as you can deliver on payment, you’ve got my attention and my blaster,” Aska respond with a smirk as she leaned against the door frame. Despite her aloof reply, everything about this meeting was surreal. Standing in the very same room as one of her idols? Amazing. Watching the Rodian’s execution of the Hutt on the holonet had cemented her respect for him but an opportunity to actually work with him? This was a thing of dreams.

Nar Shaddaa, Covax had not come back to his dead wife's home world since the days of the outbreaks. Since he lost them. Returning to the city surface of the slug moon only served to bring back a flood of memories the towering human did not want feel or think about. But the merc was not one to turn down an old friend, or the opportunity to meet let alone work with Preef.

Like his sister from another mister, the merc had been down for a year after their job for Newton. And like her, he had to get a couple of things replaced. But unlike his old partner in crime, Covax got back to work the moment he got off the operating table. Pulling jobs for Sith and the New Republic alike. However after seeing the news and getting Aska's text, Covax dropping everything.

The imposing human figure walked into the room through another doorway across from his old friend and a couple of the others. Dressed in a tight fitting t shirt that showed off his new left arm, utility pants and boots, and his very own Peacemaker hanging off his left hip. The merc lit his fine rolled serrean cigar with his mini lightsaber lighter. Taking a few puffs to suck in the flame before letting out a proper ring of smoke.

"I couldn't have said it better myself." he said after Aska. Giving his old friend a wink with his new eye. In truth Covax liked the money but it was more about the chance to truly make a name for himself. To have his name on a short list of some of the best. Names like Cad Bane, Boba Fett, and yes the living legend himself Preef Callo.

So much had happened, so many had improved, they had become strong, famous, legendary. And yet he, Gareth Gin, one of the first Zaa Fenn members, had fallen behind...the weight of his past had taken him away from the Zaa Fenn for far too long, it was time to become great, it was time to put his skills to use and become a legend himself, for it is something that he should've worked towards since the moment Preef himself convinced him to join, stagnation was not the way of the Matukai, fallen or not.

So, Gareth stood there, arms crossed and a cocky smile on his face as he nodded back at him and then listened to the Rodian speak, he had gotten good at saying stuff, back then Marissa did most of the talking but right now he was doing a decent job at it...Of course, the promise of free food and drinks was something that really caught his interest as well "Well, Preef, y'know I love me some heisting...And one as big as the one you've got planned might be enough to wake up and rally the rest...We've gotten a bit lazy so Force knows we do need that"

Gareth stated, his head turning towards the others who were there, he knew none of them, but he did know Preef had a good eye when it came to scouting talented people, so he was not going to question them "...And of course, a legendary heist means legendary profit, you guys take part of this and survive and...well, you're gonna have no problem payin' bills for a loooong time." Gareth added, giving the others some extra motivation, they shouldn't be doubting about that part, when the quickest draw in the galaxy tells you he is gonna make you filthy rich and a legend it means you're one of the luckiest thugs in all the Outer Rim, only fools or cowards would decline this offer.

Nar Shaddaa. The whole planet stank of decay, trauma, and worst of all, bad whiskey. Karina hated being there, hated walking its polluted streets and seeing only beggars and gangsters. It was a constant reminder of her old home, bouncing from one trash chute to the next as she and her brother Dima tried to make a living. Sometimes she wished the AMS virus would just devour the rest of the world already, so that she and everyone else could move on with their miserable lives.

But like a cockroach, it survived. It always did.

Karina had come in sporting a set of light armor reminiscent of your typical smuggler, masked and made to look less like the woman she was, and more like the man she was pretending to be: Ines, contract killer and Syndicate assassin. It was a play on her real name, Inessa, and had served her well during the many operations she’d completed under her indenture.

While she would have liked to continue going by Karina Safin, that identity was reserved for the Consortium, and she couldn’t run the risk of these mercenaries blowing her cover for a bit of credits. After all, in their shoes, she would do the same thing.

Karina was desperate for cash, really. After losing her brother to her mysterious employer, she needed to find a way to both buy his freedom and to pay off her contract, and when she’d received Preef’s call, she knew this was her opportunity to do just that. This was her one shot at escape. So, once the legendary crime boss was finished briefing them, she didn't bother asking questions. She only nodded and, striding toward the lit table, grabbed one of the keycards.

I’m in,” she said, voice low and mechanical due to the scrambler in her helmet. “Whatever gets me paid.

Good, they all agreed. Not one to delay unnecessarily, the rodian pressed a button and the holo-projector flickered to show a multitude of what were clearly the targets Preef had in mind, but never shown long enough for his new crew to make them out. That is, until the flickering stopped and right there in full illuminating view stood a lifesize holo-graphic image of Durr the Hutt.

"Let's start off with settling a score," in other words, the rodian didn't care he handpicked his new crew based of their reputation. He wanted to see them in action, see if they had the guts to kill when needed and only then take them on big credit runs. Force knew Preef had to deal with bad crew members before and he wasn't willing to miss his chances at the truly rare ones because some scoundrel talked too big for his breeches. "They say Durr is responsible for this kriffing virus, but no one can touch him because he's holed up in his palace and paying mercs a fortune to protect him."

The holo switched to a miniature size of Durr the Hutt's palace, highlighting the known points of entry in red. "Tell me how you'd get in. Play to your strengths." It was a test to find out how they thought, strategized and if they were capable of thinking outside the box. He didn't think he'd use any of their plans, anyway, since he had an army and a blaster that never failed him. Front door always worked when you're the Galaxy's Fastest Gunslinger. But who knows. They might impress him.

As Covax made his entrance across the hall, Aska only offered him a small smirk partnered with a short nod. Like herself, the man was now part machine; a typically unavoidable circumstance of their profession. Even so, their injuries had been rectified and may well have given them strengths that they never would have possessed otherwise. Whatever it was that Preef had in mind, Covax and Aska could easily handle it.

As it would turn out, the Rodian’s plan played right into her funhouse. As the image of Durr began to illuminate the room around them, the clone’s teeth ground together behind her lips. It was ironic, what Preef was asking. The last time she was on Nar Shaddaa, her old Rodian employer Boola had made a very similar request of her; infiltrate Hota Zugg’s auction house and secure incriminating evidence against him. Now here she was, tasked by a Rodian to once again infiltrate a Hutt stronghold. The fact that Durr was the likely source of the plague that had swept across the galaxy only further provoked her intrigue and desire to be a part of the team that brought him down.

Pushing off from the doorframe, Aska was the first to circle around the hologram as she examined the layout of his palace. Security details at each entrance, an untold number of hired hands within its walls and if any Hutt was worth their weight as a gangster, there was almost certainly a variety of traps and maybe even large ‘pets’ that could prove a nuisance. None of this was going to detour Preef, of course, so Aska knew to focus on how to get in, not what would prove to be too difficult of obstacles.

”It’s no secret you’ve got a small army at your disposal, Callo. If you march your droids and soldiers along the main way into the palace and garner their attention, it would draw focus away from the rest of the infiltration points. Of course, he’d expect a full frontal assault to be a diversion so we split into three teams. Team One, you and two others, along with your forces marching on the northern gate. Covax and I would be team two. We’ve got the gear that could get us over the walls and into the eastern courtyard once your attack is underway. We use the chaos from your forward attack to infiltrate and shut down whatever security protocols we can. Then a third team could strike from below,” Moving her index finger along the hologram from the gate to the courtyard, it would end it’s tracing motion at a tunnel system. While there was no actual connection to the palace itself, it was large enough that a small team could move through it. ”A handful of detonators and they can make their own entrance. You keep them busy at the gates and teams two and three can locate and hold Durr until you arrive,”

Of course, this was just her own opinion on an infiltration method but this was what she had been trained to do since creation. It didn’t matter if she had the others or not; she was confident she could pull this off on her own if asked through more covert means. But if she knew anything about Preef, she was fairly confident that he’d like to make a show of the operation for all of the galaxy to see.

Covax was leaning on the wall, taking another few puffs of the cigar. Otherwise quietly listening as one by one the rest of this would be crew threw in with the green skinned legend. He gave his partner a quick wink of his new left eye, just before his attention snapped back to Preef.

The moment the rodian mentioned that the oversized slug was responsible for bringing the virus to the Nar Shadda, the crime lord had the former soldier's full attention. The AMS virus took everything from him, took his life, wife and his only child. Nothing would make the human happier then to return the favor, just before skinning the fucker alive.

He let his partner speak up first, they'd been on enough jobs together he trusted her tactical mind, and half the time they had the same plan.

"I agree with most of the plan," he chimed in after exhaling. "However, I might leave the command of the assault force to one of us, Perhaps your man ape over there, if he had the stones. The two is still myself and Aska, infiltration is starting to become our bread and butter. Team three, good pilot and Preef, maybe a couple more droids play air support. Once team two takes out security, three can drop our fearless leader and then assist the assault force. Team four is still the basement team. You'll have the best chance of getting to Durr first, but also run the greatest risk of traps. Someone with some skill in slicing or perhaps a force user should be on that team." Finished giving his two credits, he gave Aska another wink and took another pull of the cigar.

You two talk like military strategists,” said Karina as she leaned over the table opposite of Aska and Covax. “An army isn’t necessary. In fact, I don’t think this crew is necessary, either. This is about killing a Hutt, right? Just give me a knife, a dozen thermal charges—” She jabbed a thumb at the giant Miralukan who went by the name of Gareth, “—and him.

If the Hutt really is hiding out in his palace, I doubt he’s open to visiting hours, let alone to a rival Syndicate boss.” She nodded respectfully at Callo. “But there’s nothing to say he won’t jump at the opportunity of capturing a trusted member of the Za Fenn Crime Family.” Karina couldn’t resist smirking. “That’s what we can do. Since I’ve never had the pleasure of working directly under the Syndicates, Durr will take me for your typical, upstart bounty hunter who’s come hoping to earn the respect of a notorious crime lord. This way, we can gain his trust.

Just give me one night, and I can have charges set throughout the palace. At your command, we can blast the whole hideout into a smoldering ruin.” Karina pointed at the palace’s weakest points across the map, and when she was finished, leaned back onto the balls of her feet. It wasn’t a very complex plan, and definitely not one of her best, but she expected this mission would work better when focused on stealth and deceit—qualities she was most experienced with as a spy and assassin.

Of course, her suggestion also made one thing abundantly clear—Karina worked alone. Everyone else, including Gareth, were only pawns and sacrificial lambs in her eyes, because what difference did it make as long as the operation was a success?

He kept his thoughts to himself as Aska outlined her proposed plan - one which involved effectively storming the palace of one of the most powerful and well-equipped mercenary outfits in Hutt Space. Storming the main gate whilst a set of strike teams breached over the walls would work, but the cost would be immense, in credits and lives both. Valden dismissed the idea as reckless, turned his attention to Covax, who provided more detail to the proposed infiltration side of the plan.

Karina was next, and she provided an injection of common sense that Valden welcomed.

Hutts didn't fight as warriors did, they fought like - well, Hutts.

Cowardly two-bit double-crossing scum, a Hutt would do what Valden would do at the sign of people rampaging toward the gate of his palace. Namely, get to his yacht and get the hell out. Sure, Karina was very arrogant of her own abilities to rig an entire palace with explosives, but, that gave Valden an idea.

"Admirable proposals, all. But..." he moved toward the projection showing the palace compound "...we can do a little better. When placed under a direct assault, the palace will come into its own. Hutts ensconce themselves away in their dens like this for their entire lives, they can withstand a siege, believe me. A Hutt Palace is designed to ooze power, it bristles with warriors, and is stacked with enough supplies to hold out for months. Durr has been safe in this palace, on a world overrun by a virus of his making, and has barely even batted a thick green eyelid. Why? Because he knows he is safe. So - we need to think outside the box."

"We storm the front gates, as a distraction to scale the walls. Fine. Hundreds upon thousands of credits lost in equipment and manpower at the north gate, only for the Hutt to flutter away if the infiltration teams get too close. We send in a spy and blast the whole place to holy hell? Great - ambitious,"
he winked at Karina "...gutsy, but to high risk. All it takes is one guard in the wrong place at the wrong time, and we're made. So, let's combined the two. Destruction, and infiltration."

"We start with an assault on the north gate, but we play to the resources we have. Why use Preefs men, when we can push thousands of the infected toward the gates - pulling guards and firepower into one central location, here on the gateway arch, as they push them back. Once the guards are gathered on the gate, we need three ships - one to bomb the gate and deal with the Rancors share of guards, another to bomb the landing pad on the leeward side of the Palace, thus closing off the Hutts means of airborne escape, and another to drop an assault team into the throne room itself. How?"

"Why that's easy. Durr is a proud Hutt, and here..."
he ran his hand across a thin ban on the front of the main palace tower "Is where he stands and surveys his domain. It's a mirrored window my friends, across the length of the palace. Ship three, with the assault team, lights the window up, and bang - we have an entrance point."

Gareth turned his head towards Preef, arms crossed as the others started explaining their plans, Gareth himself didn't feel like giving them a plan, not unless Preef specifically told him to, he knew this was some sort of trial for the others, but he also knew he had passed that kind of stuff a long time ago, so Gareth simply kept "looking" at Preef, listening to the plans that the other people came up with and giving his opinion on them to Preef non-verbally, nodding, shaking his head, shrugging and doing a few more gestures at the others talked and talked.

And after a while, the Miralukan turned his head towards each member, deciding to be that voice that would oppose to the ideas, focusing on whatever he viewed as shaky, it was always important to have someone that would tell you what might not work within your plans so you can think things through once again. So, Gareth turned his head towards Aska "That's the classic plan, not badly thought out, but you gotta think about the drawbacks of it, a frontal assault against a hutt palace, distraction or not, would mean Preef would need to mobilize a looot of people under his employ to even be able to distract the motherkriffers...Perhaps there's a way we can thin out the palace's numbers before our forces strike? That would mean that Preef would not lose too many men and we would also have an easier time going through the palace" Did Gareth have an idea about how they could do that? Maybe, but he wasn't telling yet.

Afterwards, Gareth looked at Covax, letting out a small chuckle before speaking once again "Well, this man ape over here is built for close quarters combat, I do not mind having fun in the front but a frontal siege fight isn't my strong suit at all, other than that, same deal than with your partner's idea." And then he looked at Karina, it was an idea that was closer to what he would usually think of, personally being stripped of blaster weapons would mean shit to him and chances are the guards wouldn't take his matukai gauntlets until it was far too late, however... "Like the others said, pulling that off on your own is quite risky, you got everyone here as resources, think about how to use 'em wisely, there are ways to make this plan a lot safer." And finally, the Miralukan turns his head towards Valden "Hehehe, now that's a fun idea!...However, how are you planning to move all those infected towards the palace? That seems difficult to pull off without the slug realizing we've made a move, and if he does notice, he will be alert which would make the rest of this plan a lot more difficult."

Pellios listened to the others give their plans. Two of them were clearly enforcers and believed in the strong arm method of taking the Hutt and everything he had. Total take over. Not surprising but not appetizing unless Preef had an invasion force somewhere.

"I'd kill myself" Pellios said. It was a knee jerk reaction. He wondered if there was anyone here unaware of the bounty on Preef's head. The Devaronian crossed his arms as he stared at Durr the Hutt. "Durr wants you dead. Give him the good news, say you're dead. He or one of his lieutenants comes out of hiding to check you out and we take them then. But if I were Durr I also wouldn't believe it if I heard it." Having some no name-smuggler get blown up in a hyperspace collision accident was different than the galaxy's most famous blaster weilding rodian. A deceptive ploy like that would send a lot of the Zaa Fenn crime family into dissarray to be believable. "...But it would be super cool to have a 'back from the dead' gunslinger take out his competition from within." The Devaronian shrugged at the half baked idea.

"Actually..." He said and fished out a datapad. "I think I have an invitation to the palace...might still be good." It was from a decade ago and his tone did not sound optimistic at the mention of the option. After completing a job that had gone sideways he had ended up following through all the same and earned some favor with Durr. At least he hoped the Hutt still remembered him. If they got in just with the help of an expired party invitation then that would be hilarious but not the weirdest thing to happen.

Preef listened to their plans and tried his best to both follow their train of thought as gauge their strengths and weaknesses. Two of them were closer to each other than Preef would've guessed at the start, but their plans were in sync, they kept referencing each other and seemed to care genuinely for the other's success and well-being. Good duo's were rare in the merc world, not to mention that of scoundrels, but that's mostly because its mainly a liability to be that close to someone. What would they do if one of them gets injured, or worse, killed? Would Preef be able to trust them to put the job first? He thought back on his time pulling jobs with Marissa and the hard truth that he would've dropped any score if it meant pursuing it could end up with Marissa's death.

Two others brought forth infiltration plans. Preef liked those, but as the others had already stated they were high-risk with a lot of unknown variables that ended up in a rather unceremonious death. Then there was the outlier of the group, the one who really managed to think outside of the box. Moving an army of infected towards Durr's palace would definitely distract his guards long enough for a well-planned infiltration. Chances of it being executed improperly and showing our hand to Durr? About 90%.

"We know Durr is in his palace and yet none of you suggested we just throw a big bomb on it and be done with it," he shook his head as if to say that their plans disappointed him for being too risky and too costly, while in comparison a few bombs wouldn't cost him a thing. But then he smiled, "Good. As you all probably guessed we need to make an example of the Hutt-" he was thinking about a broadcasted trial and execution on live HoloNet, "-so I need him alive," he turned towards Valden Halax, "and not infected." Because letting loose a few hundred infected on the palace it was only a matter of time before a guard got bitten, inhaled infected air or just plain rioted. Once they had Durr the dust was supposed to settle.

Preef returned his attention to the hologram, "Gareth, you will take Covax, Valden and Pellios. Find an infiltration point near ground-level. If needed you'll have twenty battle-droids as back-up." He gave Gareth the lead in this group simply because he knew he could trust him the Mirakulan, in fact, Gareth was family.

"Aska and Ines will go with me. We'll find a way inside from above," with Preef's favorite new toy: jetboots. He purposefully split the Covax and Aska apart to see how they operated solo. He'd observe Aska and he would ask Gareth to report to him later about Covax' performance. For some reason he liked Ines' approach the most. The subterfuge, the risk and the confidence she could pull it all off on her own. That man had some balls for a syndicate assassin. Preef loved it.

"Cover of night. Tomorrow. Get some rest and prep your gear. Any questions?"

Sad to hear Preef dismiss his genius, Valden smarted and focused instead on the plan the gunslinger had decided to opt for. "What's the loadout? Up close and personal?" was his only question - after all, Valden wanted to make sure he was properly kitted out for what was coming.
