BIOGRAPHY
Maarik's relationship with his siblings suffered greatly as he began to reject his father, but he found solace in his mother, Jahel. Any romance there had been between Malek and Jahel was long dead. She encouraged her son to complete his studies under his father's supervision and then go his own way, promising to finance his medical education and living expenses in secret. At eighteen years old, Maarik left the massive, lavish Carthia penthouse, and began to study at a prestigious Coruscanti medical academy on Jahel's credits. He was totally estranged from his family aside from his secret meetings with his mother.
Six months in at the academy, the credits stopped flowing. Malek had discovered his son's arrangement with Jahel and froze her personal accounts. He was creditless, soon to be homeless, and escorted off of the medical campus within another month. There was nowhere and no one to turn to. He pooled what credits he had managed to save from his mother and left the luxury co-op that she had secured for him.
The lower levels of Coruscant were unlike anything Maarik had ever had the misfortune of experiencing. The worldview of his home planet he had constructed after a sheltered life crumbled before his eyes. It wasn't just the sights, but the smells, the sounds, the pain, and the poverty just outside the doorstep of his dilapidated one-room apartment. Desperately searching for a purpose, Maarik took a job as an assistant at a busy emergency clinic. Spice overdoses, death stick abuse, blaster burns, stabbing victims, regular primary care, he saw it all, and he helped them all. He found compassion and peace among the chaos.
The little medical center's head clinician and administrator was a Jedi Knight named Dal Delgra, a Coruscant native who had returned some years earlier to treat the underserved citizens of the lower city. He noticed Maarik's attunement to his patients and his uncanny knack for making correct diagnoses with little practical experience or equipment. Maarik was allowing the force to guide him in his work without realizing it. Dal and the benefactor behind the clinic agreed to finance an advanced medical education for Maarik on the condition that he would later accept Jedi apprenticeship and devote his life to caring for the underprivileged, wherever he was needed.
After completing his scientific education and medical training at twenty-five years old, he began his apprenticeship under Jedi Knight Delgra. The clinic was left in the hands of another capable healer, and the duo travel to Ajan Kloss. After Maarik's preliminary Jedi training, he and Dal jumped from planet to planet in the outer rim territories. Disaster relief here, primary clinics there, an adventure or two. Maarik had found peace, serenity, and purpose.
Nine years on and Maarik was knighted. Master and apprentice parted ways. "The force guides me, it amplifies the cries of the suffering, it leads me where I am needed most. Just as it will for you, my young padawan," Dal had often said to Maarik. He died shortly thereafter when he contracted a highly deadly and infectious disease he was treating patients for somewhere in the outer rim.
In the five and a half years since he became a Jedi Knight, Maarik has had little contact with the Order. He travels alone, maintaining relationships with like-minded people who can help him pull together resources for whatever mission he set out on next.
