DESCRIPTION

One of only three ship designs that ever started to be produced by Rasmussen Combine, an outer rim start up that sought to get their foot in the door of ship building. A standard and well built vessel suitable for the outer rim merchant operating on a strict budget. In terms of performance it is entirely and utterly run of the mill, except for some clever weight distribution enabling the vessel to reach slightly higher speeds than its rivals. It could have been the next workhorse of the galaxy's merchant class were it not for the poor business decisions of the CEO behind the company. Rasmussen Combine sought to raise funding for their company by selling their products ahead of finalising their designs and rendering them suitable for mass production...by promising them to numerous pirate and crime groups. Suffice to say, when the vessel's production dragged on due to design challenges the pirates all came to collect their due. The company ceased existing that day and it's few workable vessels, roughly three hundred of them, were cast to the stars.

As for the Mastodon itself, it features a militaristic aesthetic to its design rather similar to the cruisers employed by both the Republic and Empire (an intentional design element meant to make it more easily converted located entirely around its cockpit: it is a raised structure that looks over the bow of the vessel granting perfect 360 degree vision to the crew. The crew complement are separated in three air tight sections, located to the left, right and centre of the bridge granting it a certain degree of bridge redundancy. If one section of the cockpit is destroyed, you can simply seal it off and use the other seats. However, this does tend to come at the expense of the wide field of vision as only the central seat has that full 360 degree radius.

The accommodations are, as one might expect, rather cramped. The crew's quarters are sizable enough for everybody to have a foot locker and bedside table each yet the passenger quarters are less roomy, consisting of bunk beds that come with a single footlocker per bunk bed. They do have one advantage though: They are located within the lower section of the vessel, built into the superstructure that connects the cargo hold to the main vessel. This grants them a certain degree of protection as not only are the passenger cabins airtight, they are located deeper into the vessel. Sadly, due to the essentially unfinished nature of the Mastodon class's design, it is lacking in ergonomic features. Finally, it has a fully detachable cargo hold. A simple button press and you can drop the storage crates upon the ground, enabling easier deliveries.

LEGALITY

Legal.

INTENT

I am making this ship because I genuinely think it will help flesh out the Outer Rim. It is intended to, narratively, serve as a footbed for exploring the Outer Rim and the often chaotic nature of trying to start up a reputable business there. Finally, it is also meant to mirror certain aspects of Cerria's character, namely being an abandoned child cast out to the stars and forced to find their own future, but also the story of its manufacturer will reveal details about her past.

I feel what stands out about it is the multipurpose nature of the vessel. It incorporates military features and a truly obscene level of speed for a vessel of its size, an element that was supposed to make it more appealing to pirate groups to purchase, as well as a highly customisable cargo hold that could be easily converted into a makeshift hanger, bomb bay or troop holder.

This is borderline starfighter performance in a light freighter, with absurdly high cargo capacity to boot, and no real drawbacks for all that. Sorry.
