Ensign is a nice raw starting point, over a complete cadet.
gives good wiggle room, and Im sure he will live up the sims when they are up and running. so we can see what sorta officer were looking at ^_^

or another option is grabbing people from the republic ranks ( and invite a Jedi or two ) to run the ground simulation.

( or make up your own scenario . just mark it with a GF0 so we know it's a custom made one)

EDIT: One more thing. Being a pilot, should I try to attach myself to a PC line officer? For example, team up with Will or someone and be a starfighter stationed on his capital ship?

LT CMDR sounds good, more over as you were expressing the most interest in a pure fighter pilot too so you can serve as our guinea pig....Attaching yourself to a fleet would be a wonderful idea as well.

really depends on the fleet he goes with. his captain may prefer to lead the squadron, but for the semantics of it all we could assume there is every reason to see him leading something like " Krayt squadron " or something
