I read his history and you can't "fight the Alsakans for a few months" and then jsut decide "to sign up and become an officer". If you were officer material you'd start off in the Officer corps, so based on that this guy's a private, as you've said he's already begun fighting.

Short Background: Hetat Marley started out as a 'bad' kind of person, being a merc. When he was kicked out of the merc company he was working at he created his own, and did it clean. The first job was to defend colonists who had wavered the right of protection and were afraid for their lives. There were huge creatures that would attack and they hired Hetat and he did the job for nearly free. During the time defending it on the ground his men fought under his command and followed his orders. They successfully completed the mission and continued on. He defeated a group of pirates that outnumbered him thanks to explosive filled fighters. When the Alsaken Crisis started up he worked a couple more jobs then he and his entire company joined the Republic Military.
