“I don’t need a babysitter,” She said with a huff, which was pointedly ignored. Not only was she being told about the detail she had to have, but it was one of her sister’s ‘handmaidens’ telling her so. What the hell was a handmaiden anyway? Women planted in place to be her friend since she never had any anymore? Val chastised herself for the cruel thought, though her mood didn’t improve.

She was standing near the gates that led to the exterior of the palace courtyards. Val had almost made it out entirely on her own when she was stopped along the way. Her sister may have been exalted into her new position, but she had an uncanny way of always knowing what Val was up to.

“Really, I’m going there for a hobby. It’s insulting to drag in a Jedi for something so trivial,” Val said.

“I’m sorry, it’s out of my hands,” The woman said meekly, “Felucia is not a safe planet,” She explained, rapidly walking to keep pace with Val.

“Whatever, tell my sister she can just-”

“M’Lady he is already here,” She spat out at once.

Val came to stop, spinning around to look at her, “What?”

Monarchy is stupid, he thought to himself. Ahdam was a Jedi Knight. A follower of what the Skywalker taught. Politics doomed the old Jedi. Their job now was to be out in the galaxy, helping the poor, the suffering. Aiding misfortune. Not tending to the whims of some Naboo royal. History showed cozying up to the rulers of Naboo wasn’t exactly the best strategy for the Jedi Order...

Yet, he owed a favor. Another Jedi had this assignment and Ahdam took it to help them out. I suppose that could be considered honorable, he thought. But he was lying to himself and he knew it.

Every second he approached the gate, and the princess and her entourage grew closer, he dreaded. But whatever. This would be an easy enough assignment. Guard her for a few days, and then pass the duties off to someone else. No matter what, he would uphold the proudest traditions of the Jedi. He would conduct himself with dignity.

"Your highness," he said as he approached, attempting to bow. "My name is-"

Before he could stop walking, he tripped over his own two feet. Stumbled forward a couple inches, but stopped himself just short of knocking right into the princess. He composed himself, red-faced, and adjusted his robes.

"...Ahdam Bac, Jedi Knight."

Val watched with a blank expression as the Jedi practically almost ate it within moments of arriving. Despite her rebellious nature, she was still a noble, and she promptly put on her more formal demeanor. She eyed him up and down to size him up, thoroughly unimpressed. Val turned to the handmaiden and waved her off.

“I’m not sure why a Jedi is needed,” She said curtly as she began to walk, expecting him to fall into step beside her. Val was used to being pampered her whole life, and she had no real concept of dealing with people in the outside world.

“I assume you have a ship?” She quirked an eyebrow as she looked at him. It didn’t even occur to introduce herself because...well of course he knew who she was. He was just a bodyguard, right? Who needed formal introductions. Val was expecting him to pull up a luxury speeder for them to travel in, and she waited with her arms folded across her chest.

A Jedi ISN'T needed, is what he wanted to say. Especially for this. As she sized him up, he could feel in the Force all he needed to about her. Unimpressed? To put it mildly—at least they had how they viewed each other in common. He could only imagine what he was in for. Entitled behavior. Snobbery. Yet another Naboo royal for yet another Jedi to deal with.

“A ship?” he asked, confounded. “M’lady, with all respect, I was dropped off here. They told me to meet you and guard you, not fly you. I assume you have a garage full of ships and an entourage to take care of that part.”

Val simply raised an eyebrow at his words. For a moment, there was nothing but silence between them. His attitude was a surprise to her, but her face didn’t betray it. After a moment, she finally spoke again, her tone deadpan.

“I was under the impression you were a Knight,” She said quietly, “But I guess you are a pad one,” She never understood the odd naming conventions of the Jedi - and she never exactly cared. With an impatient sigh, she reached for her comlink and tapped in a few buttons to have a ship brought over.

Awkward silence hung between them until the personal ship arrived. It was made for luxury and was guaranteed to be utterly useless if they ever came under attack. It would fit the two of them and a pilot, which happened to be a droid.

After they all piled in, Val opened up her datapad, rapidly typing away as the ship began to take off.

“Now I want you to stay out of my way while I collect my bugs,” She explained without looking up. This was the casual reveal of exactly what he had signed up for.

He was going to accompany her to Felucia. So she could collect insects. As her hobby.

“Bugs? As in insects?” He smirked. Couldn’t help it. That wasn’t the first surprise he’d had today, but it was certainly the first welcome one. He assumed they’d be going to an art gallery, or a lavish Coruscant party. Something that most nobles would want to be at.

“The Force lives in all of us,” he said, “right down to the littlest creatures the eye can see. Even the ones it can’t. More of the nobility in the galaxy would do well to understand that.”

He shifted a bit in his seat, given how crammed in they were. At least he could try to be comfortable, especially after being insulted. “At the end of the day, my job is to make sure you don’t get killed. Other than that, you can play in the dirt all you want, princess.”

“Yes, insects,” She said without looking up. As he went on a rant about the Force, she had to fight hard not to roll her eyes. What was it with these Jedi and constantly turning into philosophers on a whim? Val didn’t miss a beat before she spoke up.

“That sounds like the circle of life quote from that kids movie,” She said without looking up and still typing, “The Bantha King, was it?” What he said next actually did make her look up, and she was surprised to see him get cozy in his seat.

“What could possibly kill me in Felucia?” She met his gaze as the ship began to leave the planet’s surface, “Have you even been there before?” Val couldn’t imagine a Jedi pad one traveled very much. They probably took vows of silence and meditated day and night to convince themselves they didn’t have basic human instincts.

“I haven’t been to Felucia,” he said, having decided to pass over the terrible joke made about that kids movie. “Have you?”

Not that such a fact particularly mattered to him. He’d heard stories about Felucia—in particular, there was a famous Jedi who didn’t fare too well there...—but he never paid them much attention. He knew it was dangerous, but how bad could bugs possibly be?

“What's it like?” he asked. “Is this a normal excursion for you?”

Val hadn’t expected him to boldly ask if she had been there. She chewed on her lip, caught between wanting to appear well learned and being revealed as a fraud as soon as they landed. Besides, didn’t they have mind trick abilities? Well, probably not him since he was a pad one.

“Of course I’ve been there,” She said confidently as she finally put the datapad away. She made a point to look out the window at nothing as they had jumped into hyperspace by then.

“It’s a very colorful, humid jungle planet located in the Felucia system,” She rattled off and hoped he wouldn’t know she was quoting a textbook, “Did you know it was a major strategic battleground during the Clone Wars?”

Oh yeah, she definitely sold that. Val cleared her throat and picked up a magazine on the latest celebrity gossip to read. A huge picture of her sister’s face was splashed across the cover of it, “It’s a perfectly harmless planet with little critters here and there.”

“I would advise against complacency, Your Highness,” he said. “Even worlds that seem perfectly harmless can have hidden dangers you’re not expecting.”

During his school years, Ahdam remembered hearing stories about piracy on Felucia. Hondo Ohnaka’s gang once terrorized a village there during the Clone Wars. Not to mention when Master Aayla Secura was gunned down there by her own clones, during the fall of the old Jedi Order. Even during the days of the Empire, it was a hotbed for smugglers and even the occasional rebel activity.

“The Clone Wars revealed many dangers on Felucia beyond just the battlefield,” he said. “There may be more to worry about there than just insects.”

Valeska said nothing the rest of the way there, delving into her datapad to learn more about the types of insects she would collect. The journey was uneventful, and they began to descend into the surface before long. Valeska looked out the window, seeing a mist above the thick forests of Felucia.

As this was a private transport, the landing pad was far away from any civilization. It was a private, sectioned off area that took them into the heart of the forest.

The ship landed after a few moments and Valeska gathered her things to walk down the exit ramp. She barely took a few steps before she was swarmed by mosquitos. With a grimace, she took out an aerosol spray and began to spray her skin and face, sending a misty cloud around her that would no doubt douse the Jedi as well.

“Ugh, come on, Ahmed,” She muttered, “Let’s get this over with,” She said as she stepped down the ramp.

"It’s Ahdam, but okay."

Suddenly, Yerdua Poison-Spitters swarmed around them. It blurred the line between animal, plant, and fungus. It seemed deadly, but was it?

Valeska didn’t hear what the Jedi said, but she did focus on the spitters that suddenly surrounded them. Instead of panicking, she held a hand up to ensure the Jedi didn’t go charging in.

“Don’t make any sudden moves,” She said quietly, “If they think we’re a threat, they will release a poison,” She spoke barely above a whisper, quietly making her way forward.

Fear could very well translate to aggression if they weren’t careful. Valeska glanced over at the Jedi, “You keeping it together over there?”
