It is the year 0080 of the Universal Century. A half century has passed since Earth began moving its burgeoning population into gigantic orbiting space colonies. A new home for mankind, where people are born and raised.
And die.
12 months ago, the cluster of colonies furthest from the Earth, called Side 3, proclaimed itself the Principality of Zeon, and launched a war of independence against the Earth Federation. Initial fighting lasted 1 month and saw both sides lose over half their respective populations. People were horrified by the indescribable atrocities which had been committed in the name of independence.

For 8 months afterward, the war ground to a stalemate, until scientists working for the Earth Federation were finally able to replicate the technology which Zeon - with its inferior resources and smaller population - had used to even the playing field. This technology, known as the Mobile Suit, had changed the very nature of warfare, and the first successful Federation machine of this type, code-named Gundam, helped to swing the war in the Federation's favor. The Federation launched a counteroffensive against the Zeon spearheaded by their new Mobile Suits, driving the rebel colonists from the Earth and pursuing them back into space, to their homeland...

The Two Year War

It is now January, and the war has officially dragged on into its second year. The Earth Federation has conquered two of Zeon's orbital strongholds, Solomon and A Baoa Qu. The Principality is battered, but not yet defeated; Rear Admiral Kycilia Zabi, the highest ranking remaining member of the Zabi family which controls Zeon, survived an attempt on her life by the Zeon ace pilot Char Aznable and fled to her stronghold of Granada on the Moon. There, she has begun to consolidate her forces and prepare for a last stand against the Federation, strengthening the defenses of Granada, the asteroid fortress of Pezun, and of Side 3, the Zeon homeland. Patriotic but cynical, she has also ordered a quiet but comprehensive evacuation of loyal government and military personnel, materiel and selected blocks of civilians to the Principality's remote stronghold in the Asteroid Belt, known as Axis.

Meanwhile, though Kycilia is the de facto leader of Zeon, she is not as popular as she could be. While she controls the majority of the government and the armed forces, the cult of personality fostered by her brother, Gihren Zabi, still exists. Kycilia executed Gihren during the Battle of A Baoa Qu for the crime of patricide, after learning of his part in the death of their father, Degwin Sodo Zabi. Gihren's death has thrown portions of the military into open rebellion, with several prominent officers - including Admiral Aiguille Delaz - withdrawing with their fleets from the Battle of A Baoa Qu and launching a campaign of vengeance against both Zeon and the Federation.

Similarly, after over a year of brutal war, mass desertions and dereliction have plagued both the Zeon and Federation militaries, leading to the Federation's creation of the "Titans" branch, composed of political commissars responsible for suppressing rebellion within the ranks by any means necessary. Their creation, in turn, has led to the creation of the Anti-Earth Union Group, or AEUG, a rebel faction within the Federation military nominally led by Lieutenant Bright Noa and the other survivors of the carrier White Base, the goal of which is to end the war and reform the Earth Federation to prevent such tragedies from unfolding again.

Sadly, the war isn't over just yet...
