The Kaleesh stepped backwards after she parried his hit, and then stepped again forwards while making a series of quick, precise and elegant stabs, mostly aimed at her chest. "Exactly. The issue of using a single form is that after long enough study of your opponent, you may learn to predict their moves, especially if the opponent follows the velocities and other known combinations of hits used by a certain form. This issue is mostly present in styles like Makashi and Djem So, but a bit all forms can encounter this problem" he said.

Fiach nodded, assuredly, as the sparring continued – and given the Knight was on the offensive, she found herself naturally defaulting to Soresu. Her smile widened slightly. She valued the Knight’s opinions and counsel and found herself agreeing with him wholeheartedly, albeit from a different perspective.

“I concur. A slavish devotion to a given Form does create predictability. Although even a hybrid style will have this as a challenge, albeit to a lesser degree. Which is why I favour Soresu, for three reasons. The first is that it is reactive, and therefore is not predictable. The second is because by using it, I am able to ascertain my opponent’s style and preferences. The final one is that, as I have become more and more attuned with the Form and the Force, I am becoming more able to give away conscious control of my actions and allow the Force to guide me.”

“Of course, I am aware of the limitations of Soresu, which is why I have sought to learn a more offensive Form, to capitalise on mistakes, weaknesses and opportunities.”

The Kaleesh was clearly smiling behind his mask, listening to the Padawan as he kept assaulting her witn combinations of Makashi and Djem So strikes, alternating the two forms in random patterns. At a point though, he lifted his hand in front of himself and attempted to push her away with the Force, perhaps to either stop the fight or make it more lively, who knew!

Fiach was once commended for using the Force during a sparring session. But then she'd done it out of desperation, given she was outclassed with the saber. But it was one thing to use the Force and quite another to defend against it.

Which is why she didn't - because she couldn't.

But her training kicked in without a moment's hesitation. Fighting against the Force was considered futile and somewhat counter-productive. So, as the Push hit her, she went with the kinetic energy, performing a relatively graceful back-flip and landing on her feet a couple of metres behind the spot she had been standing at. Her guard was still raised and she seemed unflustered.

"I appear to be back on the retreat," she said out loud.

The Kaleesh chuckled softly, then turned off the lightsaber, signaling the end of their duel. "You fought well, young Padawan. You've shown quite the flexibility and capability in overcoming difficulties in a fight. Even though some small flaws are still here and there. But regardless, I see in you the potential of a great duelist. If I can give you some additional advice, I'd suggest you to try Makashi alongside Ataru as fighting style. Also, for some reason I'd see you with some particular lightsaber form, in the specific dual wielding or twin-bladed lightsabers. Mind it, it's just my opinion, then it's all up to you what course you'll take" he said after motioning at her to sit with him on a bench, and offered her a canteen of water.

Fiach reciprocated and her saber deactivated with a hiss-snap and she gave a short formal bow to the Kaleesh Knight. She smiled at the praise. “Thank you, it is a testament to your teaching and I will admit, the hours of practice I put in. I am by no means the finished article – I understand that – and it is by facing superior opponents that I am able to ascertain where I need to improve and where I might have ingrained any bad habits. Practice does not, in my opinion, make perfect. It makes permanent.”

“And I shall take your new advice on board and spend more time working on the second Form. Unlike Ataru, I suspect it is a Form that I can more comfortably switch to if I see a weakness in an opponent – and the greater reach it offers would keep me less in danger of opening myself up.”

“And I have been working with using a Shoto in my off-hand. I am definitely far from proficient at present, but I can see plenty of benefits – if only for the different look it presents to opponents. And in my limited experience, unfamiliarity is a key advantage when it comes to duelling.”

She took a seat beside him and sipped from the canteen he offered before passing it back. “How different is a duel in real-life to sparring like this?”

The Kaleesh pondered some at the girl's question. "What's the difference, you say? Well, first and foremost, you know that every duel could be your last duel, so in a way, it's a fight for survival. Then, the fact that you don't know a thing about your opponent's fighting style, except in case you have already fought your opponent previously, of course. Another thing, which is probably more personal, is the thrill of the fight. I know that it's frowned upon, but I, as a Kaleesh, love fighting. It's an integral part of our culture. Not like the Echani, of course, who literally fight to know each other, but still. We're warriors, and we can't help it. With all due respect of our historic moment, but when there's peace, warriors like me often try to find a way to keep fighting, even in things like arenas, or by training others, like I do" he explained, a light glint in his eyes.

Fiach nodded as she listened and pulled out a protein bar from her pocket and snapped a piece off for herself and offered the remainder to the Jedi Knight. “Most of what you say makes sense,” she replied, “except the thrill part. Not that I condone or condemn it, I just don’t relate to it. I see a duel as a last resort and so would only engage under those circumstances. But I believe an alive Jedi is more useful than a dead one, so I would look to prevail – albeit I would use the duel to engage in dialogue to end the conflict without bloodshed.”

“And I appreciate your tutelage. You give me fresh perspective and provide excellent tuition for which I am truly grateful.”

The Kaleesh politely refused the protein bar with a gesture of his hand. "I'm good, thank you" he said, pulling up his mask just enough to take another sip from the canteen. After putting the mask back down, he nodded at Fiach's statement. "You're more than right, a Jedi should use the lightsaber as a last resort in most situation. Talking yourself out of a fight can be a good option, won't argue that" he said, resting a hand on the young woman's shoulder. "You know, the gratitude shown by whoever comes under me for training is what makes me happy. Probably I already told you, but my greatest dream and also objective is to train the best fighters in the galaxy. Fighters that may equal, or even surpass, master duelists like the Skywalkers, former grandmaster Yoda, master Kenobi, master Windu, or others."

Fiach loved to hear of the Jedi of the past. It was one thing to read about them, but quite another to hear someone speak of them. There were many well documented and many, many more hinted at in documents that lacked credible sourcing. There were also, sadly, many great duellists amongst the Sith. Darth Sidious apparently dispatched a small contingent of Jedi Masters with relative ease before finding his match with Master Windu.

“I must admit, as much as I would be privileged to be half as proficient as the names you shared, I would hope my legacy fell outside of fighting prowess. To be named something like the Negotiator as Master Kenobi was, would be the greatest honour for me. Although I readily accept that prowess with a saber is a deterrent to conflict all of its own.”

He chuckled softly at her statement. "To each their own! I prefer being on the battlefield or exploring dangerous places, while you prefer science and dialogue. The Jedi is a quite varied order, with each of its members contributing in their own way. I hope my training and advice have been useful for you, young Padawan. I hope to be present to your trials of Knighthood" he said, playfully ruffling her hair! "Anyway, unless you have questions, our training session is over."

Fiach smiled. She was neither foolish nor arrogant enough to believe her way of being a Jedi was the right way – but was just her way of being the best Jedi she could be. She would be proficient with a saber, but suspected she would never be called a warrior. To each their strengths, she believed.

“The nine trials are something I shall either proactively attempt, or be found to have completed retrospectively. But if I achieve them and become a Knight, I shall owe my progress to many here – and definitely to you for your training with a saber and general combat skills.”

She stood and put her cloak back on, before bowing slightly to the Jedi Knight. “Thank you once again. Until the next time, I shall continue to practice and reflect on everything you have taught me.”

He nodded softly as he stood up and bowed back at her. "You're welcome Padawan. As we said before, practice makes perferction, and also permanence. And well, I hope that next time we'll duel you have learned well at least one between Ataru and Makashi. Not to mastery levels, mind it, but to a level good enough to substain a duel. With this, farewell" he said with a smile behind his mask, and then left for his own businesses.
