New Chancellor Elected, with Record Low Turnout
Following the resignation of the last one, the Republic has proudly elected a new Chancellor to the vacant position in a vote described by commentators as ’mostly for show’.
The vote, which saw around four voters (aside from the candidate) out of the entire Senate in attendance, waived through the nomination of Senator Emil Ro, who launched into a staggering speech, which echoed the worlds of former Supreme Chancellor, turned genocidal tyrant, Emperor Palpatine.
Commencing his speech with the exact same words used by the long-dead tyrant, Chancellor Ro issued a rallying cry to ”unite against the growing dark”, seen by many as a jab at the Sith Empire, and their continued agitation on the Republics border.
Chancellor Ro has recently begun overseeing the remilitarisation of the Republic, which when offered alongside his emulation of the founder of the First Galactic Empire, is causing concern.
Speaking to the Hyperlane Herald earlier today, a source from the Office of the Chancellor denied suggestions that the vote was 'mostly for show' saying:
"The New Republic has always operated as a collective body, focused on expanding the rights and freedoms of all. We embody the spirit of democracy, and in that spirit, we came together, as representatives of various worlds, to elect a new Chancellor - with a commanding vote, that shows the Chancellor enjoys widespread support from the people of the New Republic."
However, news of the Chancellors election has not gone down well with some groups, with Hal Hallan of the 'New Alderaan Committee' slamming the Chancellors first speech in the role as "shallow and cruel", saying:
"Quoting the man, no, the murderer, who destoryed Alderaan, and wiped millions of people off the face of the galaxy, in a speech that goes on to talk of 'uniting' is a twisted, shallow and cruel approach. The Chancellor should apologise for their words, immediately."
