New Chancellor Elected, with Record Low Turnout

Following the resignation of the last one, the Republic has proudly elected a new Chancellor to the vacant position in a vote described by commentators as ’mostly for show’.

The vote, which saw around four voters (aside from the candidate) out of the entire Senate in attendance, waived through the nomination of Senator Emil Ro, who launched into a staggering speech, which echoed the worlds of former Supreme Chancellor, turned genocidal tyrant, Emperor Palpatine.
Commencing his speech with the exact same words used by the long-dead tyrant, Chancellor Ro issued a rallying cry to ”unite against the growing dark”, seen by many as a jab at the Sith Empire, and their continued agitation on the Republics border.

Chancellor Ro has recently begun overseeing the remilitarisation of the Republic, which when offered alongside his emulation of the founder of the First Galactic Empire, is causing concern.

Speaking to the Hyperlane Herald earlier today, a source from the Office of the Chancellor denied suggestions that the vote was 'mostly for show' saying:

"The New Republic has always operated as a collective body, focused on expanding the rights and freedoms of all. We embody the spirit of democracy, and in that spirit, we came together, as representatives of various worlds, to elect a new Chancellor - with a commanding vote, that shows the Chancellor enjoys widespread support from the people of the New Republic."

However, news of the Chancellors election has not gone down well with some groups, with Hal Hallan of the 'New Alderaan Committee' slamming the Chancellors first speech in the role as "shallow and cruel", saying:

"Quoting the man, no, the murderer, who destoryed Alderaan, and wiped millions of people off the face of the galaxy, in a speech that goes on to talk of 'uniting' is a twisted, shallow and cruel approach. The Chancellor should apologise for their words, immediately."

The media was all over Emryc when the tabloid came out criticizing the circumstances of the new Chancellor’s ascension to his role. The half Sephi was on his way to a meeting when he was accosted by several reporters. No doubt snide commentary was expected. Spotlight on something like this revealed fractures in the New Republic. The half Sephi gazed at the camera, silver gaze as frosty as ever.

“Any New Republic Senator not present or supportive of the newly elected Chancellor is someone that blatantly stands against progress. Full stop,” Emryc stated flatly, “Though he acted with noble intent, Chancellor Owusaan was a man heavily indoctrinated in archaic ideologies that would see the New Republic forever stagnant. Chancellor Ro brings a breath of desperately needed fresh air and I look forward to working with him. Any New Republic Senator that can't be bothered to show up or support this move,” Emryc flashed a grin, “I suggest you either clear out your desks and make way for someone better or get your acts together. Because Chancellor Ro will be putting you to work.”

Emryc said nothing more as he turned from the camera, an explosion of shocked commentary erupting behind him. He left media with that infamous brutal bluntness he has known for.

Game recognized game.

Emil was leaving the office and making for a taxi speeder to return him home to 500 Republica when a mob of press congregated behind him like a school of fish. He had already gotten used to this part of the job—he even liked it, somewhat. But today, the questions being thrown at him were fresh out of a tabloid. Not unusual, but certainly not the typical barbs being thrown at him.

"Chancellor Ro," said a Twi'lek reporter. "What do you say to the accusations that your acceptance speech directly quoted speeches made by Emperor Palpatine prior to his rise to power?"

"I hardly think love of my country and democracy are controversial ideas," Emil fired back, with a touch of a smile. "And I certainly don't think Palpatine has a trademark on those ideas either."

"But Chancellor," This from a Devaronian reporter, "The same report also cites your administration's increased militarization as further proof for concern. Should New Republic citizens be worried about your intentions?"

"Look," Emil replied. "The New Republic faces threats from within and without. Let us not forget that the man your 'report' crudely compares me to was recently revealed to be a Sith. Well, the Sith are on the rise again, and I think it is prudent to prepare our Republic to defend itself anyway possible. Besides, the military can also use it resources to help systems afflicted by the AMS pandemic. That is why I think these efforts will be appreciated once their benefits are reaped in the coming weeks."

More questions soared his way, but Emil was done answering them. As his taxi pulled up, he waved at the gathered press, bad them good night, then disappeared within the cab, which pulled away out of sight.
