I would suggest first and foremost to read all the stickied threads in the main areas like the Story, Beginners, and the factions you may be interested in.
You are allowed three characters and two of the three can be in a main faction. The catch is that you as a writer can only be in one main faction at a time. So, the Jedi don't have a subfaction, but the Republic and the Border Alliance count as one main faction and the Sith and the Sacred Band of Ziost count as one main faction. Take me as an example, I have one SBZ character, one Sith character, and one independent character. So yes, your character can certainly change sides if that's what you want to do, but there has to be incharacter reasons and you are still restricted to one main faction. So if one of my characters suddenly wanted to go and join the republic or the jedi, I would have to archive the other one belonging to the sith faction or have them also change sides in character.

hey hey welcome to the site, its great to have you! padmé and tristyn already got you covered on the basics, and theres stickies in the role-playing help section for character development tips as well! in the player workshops section youll find a bunch of fancy schmancy character profile templates either stickied or if they have the "template" tag next to the thread title. id recommend filling out the basic template the site staff provides (under character profiles section, stickied at the top) and then just copy-pasting the info into the fancy template.
another good bit to read is the story here clicky as well as looking at the map of faction territories here clicky so youre familiar with whats going on and where everythings at!

If you are just starting to RP wynaut taking a look at these generic threads about character creation and RP in general. Amazing ressources, especially for newcomers. And remember, the most important qualities any RPer should have are open-mindedness and receptiveness to criticisms. We are all here to have fun first and foremost (perhaps also to escape the blandness of our day to days lives and exert our creativity).

Don't worry, most of us here probably have little to no idea what we're doing, but someone has to pretend they know what they're doing, or all would be chaos.. ;)
Seriously, the one thing I am learning, or trying to anyway in between getting up people's noses is this.. Just try to relax.
Feel don't think, as some Jedi dude said once. Or is that backwards??
Anyway, just type what you feel the character would do.
Then afterwards maybe just go back over it once to check that what you've said doesn't completely contradict what somebody else said.
It'll come to you naturally, to some extent, if your first character is a bit like you in some way.
Just write what you feel.
