Moraband was a world that was somewhat difficult to access. Patrols often scoured the area and even many members of the Sith Order weren't allowed here. The benefits to being Empress was that she could go where she pleased and invite whomever she pleased.

Some time had passed since the Council Purge and while her physical wounds had largely improved, there was something about her heart and soul that was different. The scars that were there were still present, and perhaps she had come out here to distract herself. To focus her mind and emotions on something other than brooding over the deaths and the loneliness.

As strange as it may sound, she was glad that Jaikus would be out here with her. Despite her slight jealousy of him, he was entirely too pleasant for her to be annoyed with and his polite and kind nature meant that he was a relatively positive influence on her. Or so she had decided.

Coming out here when she was now looking very pregnant may have been a questionable decision, but she simply couldn't take any more time off or any more time sitting around. The time to act was now.

On any other occasion, Jaikus would’ve been downright ecstatic to be on Moraband. It was a planet that was largely off limited to the majority of the order, and despite being an active contributor to the Empire, a champion such as himself was rarely given the opportunity to walk amongst its ruins. It was a planet richly steeped in history of the Sith - monuments and remnants of Empires past littering practically ever corner visible.

On any other occasion, Jaikus would’ve stopped to marvel at every detail. To take in the sights and appreciate the historical value of everything he was witness to - that passion for knowledge and history burning bright as it had since the Axxilan was a child. But today was no such occasion. He was here for a purpose.

Truthfully, the Axxilan wasn’t privy to the reason for his with Renfry meeting today. The Empress had not divulged a tremendous amount of details in her summons to Moraband, but he didn’t really ask any questions. Nevertheless, it didn’t take much thought for Jaikus to rule out the possibility of this being related to their recent quest. The next stage of that journey would require more than just pouring over ancient texts and holocrons.

That was something Jaikus knew that the Empress wouldn’t do now, or so he believed. Not when doing so risked the child in her belly.

Jaikus couldn’t deny, even as he trudged through the sands - his feet carrying him forward - that his mind was somewhere else. It was clear that the lingering emotions - the pain, the fear, and the faintest bits of resentment - hadn’t completely left him since Emryc’s near-death experience. Nevertheless, the fact that his partner still drew breath - that he was recovering - was enough to keep the Axxilan grounded and to quell the worst of his fears.

It meant that whatever anger he might’ve felt about the situation, Jaikus had no intentions of being unpleasant or hostile to Renfry.

As could be expected, Jaikus arrived on the hostile planet donning his signature armor - his body tightly fit within the ensemble of black armorweave and cloth. His lightsaber hilt was clipped to his hip, and a vibro-knife was tucked into his belt. Notably, Jaikus had forgone the mask that usually accompanied his armor - his hair straightened and styled neatly, while the air was scented slightly with his cologne.

It didn’t take Jaikus long to find Renfry at their designated meeting place. The Axxilan paused for a brief moment before striding straight ahead, joining the Empress where she was standing - overlooking the valley littered with ruins and ancient temples ahead. He dipped his head towards her, citrine eyes turning to regard the Dathomirian. “My Lady,” He said smoothly. "How are you?"

Jaikus had accurately guessed that the meeting today was going to be about: their mutual project.

Plodding on, she said honestly. Picking through their project was just another way to keep her mind occupied in the wake of what had happened recently.

And you? How have you been holding up? she asked. The entire upper echelon of the Sith seemed to be in upheaval. Everyone she knew and interacted with had their own portion of this struggle.

I took a look back through the old records again, and I think I narrowed down the next - or maybe final - clue to that structure, there, she said. She motioned toward a tomb-like structure in the valley below them.

There's no record of anyone ever being buried there, which is... inexplicable, she said. This was a world where only the most elite of the Sith were buried. Having no one buried in one of those tombs seemed... impossible, and she could only assume that it either meant this was where their "entity" was buried or it was a way of locating that person.

And with that, she started heading down into the valley, following a path of stones that made for easier walking along the way.

Jaikus was silent for a few moments after Renfry spoke, keeping his eyes on the valley below. Much had occurred in the past few weeks, and Renfry would know the way it likely lingered on the Axxilan’s mind even before asking her question.

“I’ll be alright,” He said genuinely, glancing over towards Renfry. Perhaps she more than anyone, the Empress would know how the entire ordeal had impacted Jaikus - not to mention the ripple-effects being felt throughout the entirety of the ISB, even if Renfry had stepped in early to fill the void.

He put it all of that to the side for the moment, turning his attention to the tomb up ahead. He couldn’t help but furrow his brows ever-so-slightly, considering what she had revealed about the temple. “That’s.. Odd.” Odd was a bit of an understatement. There was no rhyme or reason why anything had been built on Moraband without a very clear reason and figure to attach it to. Any structure, let alone an entire tomb, having zero records associated with it was an anomaly.

“Perhaps whoever is buried here did not wish to be disturbed.” He said after a long moment, following Renfry as she walked - following that same path of stones.

“Whatever we find here.. I do not believe we are prepared to make the final step.” He said after a very long moment, glancing towards her. Whatever desire she had to forge ahead - to occupy herself with their hunt, Jaikus knew that actually reaching the end of their hunt would have to wait, due to her condition.

He turned back ahead after that. “Perhaps we can use the surrounding tombs to gauge the age of this one. The nearby structures should be similar on age, no?”

That seemed to be the Sith way, wasn't it? They all suffered, they all hurt, and they persevered. They pushed on whether for themselves, for someone else, for power, or simply because there were no other options. Eventually they came out the other side for better or worse.

The continued downward and she agreed with him how odd it was. To the point of being unheard of. He went on to point out that they weren't in any condition to make the final push, and she couldn't disagree with him.

Yeah, you're probably right, she said. It had already been a dangerous journey and that wasn't even confronting what lay at the end. She was starting to hope that it would all be worth it in the end.

We can take a look at them, she said, though even if they did manage to find the names of the Lords here, there was no guarantee they would know all of them.

Are you as well versed in Sith history as galactic history? she asked. She approached the empty tomb first and reached out a hand to touch the wall. She could feel something powerful resonating from it, but it was a moment too late to realize what was happening.

A concussive wave knocked her back with little warning, slamming her into a wall behind her. Her ability to use the Force was the only thing that kept the damage from being more severe as she pushed herself back up to her feet.

Pain was now shooting through her back, but everything seemed to be working. Except for the odd feeling of water against her legs. Out here in the desert that had to be an illusion or else her nerves were going wacky on her. That wasn't good. It was only a few seconds later that she looked up at Jaikus, eyes wide with realization.

I think my water just broke.

Jaikus gave Renfry a silent nod, listening as the Empress agreed with his assessment of just how far they could pursue this particular venture in her current condition. It was abundantly clear just by looking at her that the Dathomirian was close to the end of her pregnancy - even if the Axxilan didn’t exactly know when she was due - and was in no condition to be conducing dangerous rituals of Sith sorcery.

Moreover, the Axxilan had made it abundantly clear that taking that final step was something he intended upon including his partner on. And that fact hadn’t changed.

“It isn’t much,” He said after a moment of silence, referring back to his suggestion about surveying the surroundings tombs. “But it is a start. It is only logical that the adjacent structures would be of similar age - give or take a few decades. If we can identify even a few of the names.. It should give us an indication of the age of our mystery tomb.” Their previous research had brought them to Moraband, and the age of the scrolls themselves indicated - roughly - the age of whatever it was they were looking for.

It was only a matter of confirming whether the tomb Renfry pointed out matched the criteria they were looking for.

“I am. Sith histories have always been a passion of mine,” Jaikus said after a moment to answer her question, a bit of pride bleeding into his voice as he walked down towards the first tomb. Countless hours since childhood had been spent pouring over the history textbooks, dusty manuscripts and old books, and it was a passion that followed the Axxilan to this day.

Jaikus felt the same energies radiating out from the first tomb - ripples of power emanating through the Force, just as Renfry extended her hand to touch it. It took the Axxilan a moment to realize what trap might be lurking there, and the realization came just a split second too late. “Wait–” Before he could finish the warning, Jaikus winced as the powerful concussive blast forced Renfry backwards and into the wall behind her.

His eyes immediately snapped towards Renfry as she forced herself back to her feet, a bit of concern bleeding into his expression as he took a few steps forward. “Are you alright?”

Jaikus blinked a few times, eyeing the Dathomirian as she went wide eyed. Confusion briefly manifested on his face - only for it to melt away and be replaced by complete shock at Renfry’s revelation.

“Fuck.” He muttered under his breath, the only think he could think to say given their situation. They were at least half a mile from their ships, and the hike had taken them down a narrow and rocky pathway deeper into the valley. Backtracking would mean making the hike back up the gorge, and Jaikus knew that was not something Renfry would be able to do now.

“We need to get you back to the ship. Now.” He said after a few seconds of frantic thought, finally glancing back towards her rather than staring up at the path ahead of them. There was a sense of urgency in his voice, the gravity of the situation finally dawning on Jaikus.

He paused for a moment, mulling over his next move for but a moment before acting. Without another word, the Axxilan took a few steps forward and closed the distance between himself and Renfry. There wasn’t much of another option to get to the top of the gorge, and so Jaikus opted to pick the Empress up in a bridal style carry - hoisting her up into his arms while supporting her back and legs. His leanly muscled physique and being in good shape - coupled with Renfry not actually weighing much - meant that he was more than capable of carrying her - especially with the adrenaline now pumping in his veins.

Jaikus didn’t hesitate for even a moment - turning on a heel and beginning to run in the direction that they had previously came, moving as quickly as he physically could while putting in an extra bit of effort to curb his own clumsy tendencies. The absolute last thing he needed was to trip right now.

As he ran, the Axxilan couldn’t help the way his mind immediately turned towards what would happen once they reached their ship. He knew that with the child on the way, they wouldn’t have time to reach Korriban, disembark and move to any medical facilities. He knew that they would have to make due with whatever resources they had on the ship.

His eyes briefly flicked towards the narrow, windy path that led up towards the top of the gorge. Rather than hiking back up, Jaikus ran straight past the trail-head and continued on towards the face of the cliff itself - his eyes flicking upwards to scout out a small landing up above.

The Axxilan took in a breath, drawing upon the Force all around him. It built and coalesced throughout his body, flowing into his legs as he bent at the knees. “Hang on!” He said to Renfry, gripping onto the Dathomirian tightly. Just then, Jaikus sprang back up and leapt - the Force carrying them both to that small, rocky landing against the cliff-face.

He landed with a slight skid, his boots sliding across the smooth rocks a few inches before coming to a halt. Jaikus glanced down towards Renfry for but a moment to check the Empress’ condition before immediately turning his attention back to the cliff above them. They would need to make several such jumps to reach the top.

Without another word, Jaikus once more drew upon the Force - preparing himself to spring towards the next ledge.

Renfry was trying really hard not to panic. She wasn't due yet, this was weeks too early. What if there were complications? She was out here in the middle of nowhere. Sure, Nightsisters had been delivering in the wilds for years, but that was with midwives and preparation and on time and magick, and still sometimes they lost the babies.

We need to go, she said, not even realizing he had effectively just said the exact same thing. She was starting to walk back toward the ship, doing something between walking quickly and walking carefully (that wasn't really that quick) when suddenly she was being literally swept off her feet into Jaikus's arms. She was quite shocked, but before she could say anything or object, he was absolutely hoofing it back toward the ship, leaping through the air.

Don't drop me!! she all but yelled at him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck as he leapt into the air, wincing as they soared upwards, praying they would make it up without being killed or falling short. After all, how often did he do this jumping stuff with another person's weight too.

They paused before the last jump and she looked at him.

Are you okay? Do you need help? I don't want us to plunge to our deaths on the next jump! she said. I'll help you up too, she said. After all, she wasn't totally worthless.

Okay, 1... 2... 3... she said, waiting for him to jump and giving them both a boost through the Force. This was absurd, right?

It was hard to tell if the Axxilan heard a single word that Renfry said. Jaikus kept his eyes straight ahead as he sprinted through the barren, sandy terrain - making a beeline for the cliffs and the quickest route back to their ships. It was abundantly clear that he was entirely focused on getting Renfry back to safety as quickly as possible, and was largely running on instinct as he opted to sweep her off her feet and book it.

“I’ve got you,” He said calmly in response to her yelling and the vice grip on his neck, hugging the Dathomirian tightly as he leapt through the air. The panic in her voice was clear, but the Axxilan paid it no mind - especially as he worked to quell his own worries at that moment. The Axxilan knew that they were out in the middle of nowhere, and he knew for a fact that there was no one - droid or otherwise - on his own ship who would be useful for child delivery.

By the third or fourth jump, Renfry would likely begin to see the droplets of sweat that began to accumulate on the Axxilan’s brow - though he didn’t slow his ascent - taking only a moment or two to catch his breath before bounding to the next ledge - each platform seeming a bit smaller than the last.

Jaikus’ feet skid across the rocks as he reached the second-to-last platform. He immediately looked up, judging the next jump, before glancing down to Renfry when she spoke. “We aren’t going to plunge to our deaths,” He reassured. “Are you alright?” The Axxilan knew the answer to that question was probably ‘no’, but it didn’t prevent him from seeing how she was holding up through the jumps and whatever else.

He didn’t argue when Renfry offered to assist the last jump. It was significantly farther of a leap than the others, and quite frankly he could use the additional boost. “On three,” Jaikus gave a nod before looking back upwards, benting ever-so-slightly at the knees. Once more the Force built and flowed into his limbs, and on que with Renfry’s counting, the Axxilan sprang upwards and into the air. His own Force-enhanced jump carried him through the air, and with the added boost from the Empress, sent them soaring well above and over the lip of the cliff.

Jaikus hugged the Dathomirian tightly as he came back to the ground, his boots colliding with the barren earth and kicking up a large cloud of dust as they both skid toward several feet from their initial landing point, finally coming to a halt as the Axxilan pressed his weight down onto his heels. Once more, he spared Renfry a quick ‘you okay?’ glance before proceeding to hoof it back towards the ships - able to make out the durasteel exterior of the Empress’ vessel from where he was standing. “Almost there,” He said, before proceeding to book it in that direction.

Within a few minutes of adrenaline-fueled running, Jaikus finally reached the Empress’ ship - managing to avoid tripping or otherwise dropping Renfry along the way. He ascended the durasteel ramp and ducked his head as he climbed inside. It wasn’t the first time he had been on the vessel, and it meant that he knew exactly where to go in order to reach the medbay on board. A command was given to a pilot droid to begin to prep the ship to depart for Korriban, though he doubted they would reach any civilized medical facilities in time.

He passed through the doors and into the sterile white medbay, immediately spotting a large hospital-style bed against one of the walls. The Axxilan made his way over to it before very gingerly setting Renfry down atop the mattress. Only then did he finally take a look around the room - realization hitting him all at once.

They were entirely alone on that ship.

Jaikus glanced back at Renfry, a bit of concern appearing on his features for a brief moment and she would likely know exactly the reason why. The Empress hadn’t been expecting for weeks, after all, and there were none of the med-droids or Nightsisters aboard to aid in an expected delivery.

There was complete and utter silence from the Axxilan for a few moments, his mind racing as his citrine eyes remained fixated onto the Empress. Of all the situations Jaikus thought he might find himself in during their expedition, this was certainly not one of them.

After a few moments, Jaikus finally spun on a heel and pushed off from where he was standing. He reached down, beginning to remove the gloves and phrik vambraces that covered his hands, instead replacing them with a pair of sterile rubber gloves.

Renfry poured the Force into their leap, propelling them up and over that last chasm. She let out numerous quick breaths of relief that they were "safe" now, but she realized they weren't out of the woods yet. She tried to climb down out of Jaikus's arms because this seemed a little ridiculous, but evidently he was having none of it as he charged onward.

They darted up the ramp of her ship and it hit her. She had only brought her pilot droid and the medical droid was currently out for maintenance so that it would be fully ready when the delivery came. The Shadow had a sense of irony, apparently.

She was plopped on the bed in a manner that Jaikus probably thought was gentle, but really wasn't. But he had gotten her here, so she couldn't complain. She saw him starting to put on rubber gloves and her jaw dropped open a little bit.

What?! Have you ever done this before? Do you even know what you're doing!? Oh no, there's no jathroot tea! she said, realizing that there was going to be absolutely no pain killer for this procedure.

No, no, no, we have to get back. I am not having this baby until I am back! she was practically shouting at this point in a full on panic that wasn't really directed at him except for the fact that he was the only one in the room. She was now trying to climb off the bed and he would have to physically stop her. And then the first wave of pain hit her.

A million different things were going through Jaikus’ head at that precise moment, and it took a concerted effort on the Axxilan’s part to keep a relatively calm and focused expression on the exterior. It wasn’t going to help if they were both panicking. There was a clear sense of urgency as he scurried through the medbay, gathering what supplies he would need for the delivery.

While there was no jathroot tea, Jaikus snagged a pain-killer STIM that was bound to come in handy momentarily.

His attention snapped back to the Empress herself when she spoke up, panic lacing into her every word - and he really couldn’t blame her for questioning his credentials for such a procedure. After all, he was no trained midwife. “I know what I am doing,” He said reassuringly. They didn’t have a tremendous amount of options, and the limited medical knowledge the Axxilan had would have to suffice. “You’re going to be fine.”

Jaikus continued to prepare even as Renfry screamed directly at him. The fact that she was going through childbirth and under less-than-ideal circumstances justified every bit of shouting and panic. He only focused his attention back onto her when Renfry started to crawl out of the bed. “Hey, hey,” Jaikus shuffled back towards the bed, reaching out to place his hands on her shoulders. He didn’t apply any pressure or force her, but it would hopefully be enough to stop her in her tracks and prevent her from moving farther. “Stop,”

“Renfry,”
He said, using the Dathomirian’s name for the first time since they’d known each other. “We’re not going to make it back to Korriban. Korriban is hours away.” He spoke clear and methodically, attempting to be as logical and calm as possible. He couldn’t simply tell her to do anything - she needed to understand and work with him through the process. “It is just you and me. It isn’t ideal but this we don’t have a choice. Please,” He reached down, attempting to ease the Dathomirian back into the bed if she allowed him to. He clearly noted the first wave of pain that hit her, clear as day in the woman’s expression. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you or the baby. Everything will be fine.”

Only if and when the Empress was laying back down did Jaikus turn around, grabbing the pain-killer STIM that was left on a nearby tray. He removed the protective cap from the injection-end, preparing to press it into the muscle of her shoulder if she allowed. “For the pain. It will take a few minutes to take effect.”

Renfry was indeed in a full on panic, something that few these days ever actually saw from her. But they were in a situation that warranted a little panic. Tears started to pull at her eyes as she looked at him, trying to take deep breaths.

What if she dies? What if there's a problem? I can't do this. I don't know how to raise a kid. Everyone around me gets hurt and dies, he said, starting to outright sob. It wasn't a pretty sight.

She took several more breaths before another wave of contractions practically floored her and she was left gasping for breath and cursing loudly.

She was thankful when he finally punched a stim into her shoulder, feeling it at least do something.

Okay, okay, okay, okAAAAAAAAAY! she ended up yelling as another wave of pain came crashing down. This couldn't be over quickly enough.

Look, if anything happens to me during this. Make sure she's taken care of, she said. There was no one else to ask, and it was entirely inappropriate, but she had to know.

Jaikus kept his eyes on Renfry the entire time, watching as the Empress began to descend into downright panic. He saw the tears that began to roll down her cheeks with each sob, and the look of fear behind her eyes. Whatever doubts the Axxilan had - whatever panicking he was doing internally, he buried it deep and kept his composure in that moment.

The Axxilan didn’t hesitate for a moment to reach out, grasping Renfry’s hand as she sobbed. “Everything is going to fine, do you hear me? You are going to be healthy. She is going to be healthy - and you are going to be a fantastic mother to her.” He gave her fingers a squeeze, his words as reassuring as he could be. “I’m going to help you get through this.”

The pain-killer stim was quickly discarded after the injection into her shoulder. She would immediately feel some relief, but it would take a few additional minutes for the medication to take full effect.

Jaikus couldn’t help but stare when Renfry spoke again, the words catching him somewhat off guard - clearly noting the bit of desperation that bled into the Empress’ voice. The Axxilan couldn’t help but play out that scenario in his mind, his thoughts lingering on Renfry’s child. On his fiance’s child.

“I will protect her with my life.”
He finally said, meeting her gaze with each word. There was an unwavering look of resolve that burned behind his ears - and she would know that his words weren’t simply spoken for her comfort. He meant every bit of what he said, and there was nothing that would dissuade him from it.

Jaikus gave her hand one last firm squeeze, one last bit of reassurance and moral support, before he pulled back.Jaikus began to reposition himself at the foot of the bed where Renfry was laying.

It didn’t matter his own doubts, and those worst case scenarios were rapidly sent to the furthest corners of his mind - even if they still likely raced through Renfry’s own. This was no time for him to panic. He had promised to help her through what was bought to be a long and painful process, and Jaikus would see this through.

Renfry looked up at him, golden eyes locking with his as he spoke, and she knew that what he was saying to her wasn't just empty words, and so she was satisfied. Her fears and tears began to subside as the pain did to a small extent. It was going to be a long few hours.

---

The moment her daughter was placed against her chest, all the pain and discomfort melted away. Little hands reached out, clawing at Renfry's skin, little pointed ears twitching slightly at the sound of Renfry's gasp.

Her mouth hung open slightly as she looked at the tiny little baby. It wasn't due yet, but the delivery had gone without further issue. She couldn't keep her face from breaking into a practically glowing smile. Tears threatened to tug at her eyes for an entirely different reason now as she wrapped her arms around the tiny swaddled child.

Look at you, she said in exactly the voice you would imagine. This, of course, was met immediately by screaming and crying, but she didn't care.

Thank you, Jaikus, she said, tearing her eyes away after a few moments to look at him. She didn't know what she would have done without him. The outcome could have been much different.

It had indeed been a very long few hours - and to his credit, Jaikus attempted to keep his composure through every moment of it. No matter how loud Renfry screamed, no matter the doubts that clawed at his mind and screamed that he wasn’t qualified for any of this, Jaikus didn’t allow any of it to penetrate the surface - conducted himself in the most methodical and calm way he could - operating as such through the entire process.

Hours passed, and Jaikus couldn’t deny the distinct sensation of relief that washed over him - staring down at the squalling bundle in his arms. Despite being early, the delivery had gone off without any further complications and the little girl in his arms appeared to be as healthy as could be. Their next destination would no doubt be Korriban and their state-of-the-art medical facilities to get both the child and Renfry looked at, but the worst had certainly passed in Jaikus’ mind.

And for a moment, Jaikus stared down at the baby cradled in his arms. There was no denying the way that his lips tugged upwards with warmth and affection, a small gasp escaping from his lips as he saw the way the infant’s slightly pointed ears twitched and moved. Whether Emryc acknowledged the child or not, it was still his fiance’s child - and Jaikus couldn’t deny the draw he already felt cradling her within his arms - and it bled right onto his expression.

Nevertheless, the Axxilan didn’t allow himself more than a single moment to look down at the infant before turning his attention back to the mother. Without a moment of hesitation, Jaikus walked over and very gentle placed the baby into Renfry’s arms. He lingered there for a moment longer, placing his hands behind his back as he stared down at them both.

“She is.. Absolutely perfect.” He said softly, a bit of awe and wonder bleeding into his voice.

He finally turned from the baby and looked at Renfry. His lips tugged a bit wider - genuine and warm - and the Empress would immediately notice the difference in his eyes at that moment. There wasn’t a hint of the bright citrine hue that typically dominated the Axxilan’s eyes, but instead his pupils were their natural shade of emerald green.

He shook his head. “I am just glad you - the both of you - are well.” The Axxilan reached forward, placing his hand on Renfry’s shoulder. It lingered for just a moment before dropping back to his side, his gaze finally flicking back to the baby.

"What's her name?"

Renfry could barely tear her eyes off of the baby, but eventually looked back to Jaikus. She noticed his softened features and the warmth that was in his voice. She couldn't help but continue to smile.

Arla, she said. Her name's Arla. You're right, she's perfect, she said quietly, looking back down. They had to get back, and she felt exhausted, but now was a chance for rest.

Let's get back, she said.

After a few moments, she pulled out her comlink and took a photo of the baby and thumbed through before pulling up Emryc's number. She knew it was a private and secure number, so she didn't fear others finding it.

A single picture of a beautiful baby girl was sent along. "Arla Thorne of the Forgotten Valley, born perfectly healthy 19:56 GST." She knew that Emryc's involvement with the baby may well be extremely limited, but she also knew that he deserved to know. She needed him to know.
