As the midday sun crescendoed above the city of Theed, thousands of people from every walk of life began to culminate around the beautiful canals that curved and bent through the golden city. In the distant skies, dark storm clouds could be seen with occasional cracks of lightning whilst the boom of thunder remained subtle and barely noticeable. Yet the people gathered here cared little for the approaching downpour, secure under their awnings and grandstands, for today was a special day. A day that had only recently come to Naboo and could well be the beginning of something fortuitous for the planet and it’s people. Today, the Galactic Pod Racing Circuit had finally come to Chommel Sector and the roar of the excited crowd signaled a welcome reception.

“It’s here! It’s now! The moment we’ve all been waiting for!” bellowed a local Nubian announcer from his elevated booth.

“Indeed it is, Joro! The season opener of the circuit is about to commence and we can not be any more excited!” the Mikkian announcer known across the galaxy as the face of commentary continued, her tendrils floating about with energetic motion. “Before we get to the race, let’s discuss our racers!”

Camera drones numbering in the dozens would descend from the sky and distribute themselves around the track whilst five remained at the starting line, a floating pad in the ciy’s major canal directly under the main thoroughfare bridge. Each drone would select a racer and float above, getting beautiful shots for the displays throughout the city as well as the holonet broadcast. As they hovered closely, microphones would be activated so the racer’s could make comments to their viewers or perhaps even pick up on some unintended commentary. After all, tensions and adrenaline were about to run high.

“First up, a young man going by the name… Milk ‘n Honey, coming to us from Juvex! He may be young but that doesn’t mean he’s going to go down easy!” “You’re right, Vikka! I can’t wait to see what he can pull off!”

“Next up, we have Flyboy!! Word is this young man is already a renowned pilot!” “Then he’s certainly going to be in his element here today!”

Dusty Trails! Do you think he’s trying to imply something?”Oh, absolutely! Let’s see if he can live up to his namesake!” “In a pod like that, I have every faith!”

“This one, the Red Baron, he certainly looks dangerous!” “Doesn’t he, though? Fortunately we have numerous medical teams on standby! I have a feeling he’ll make sure they don’t remain bored on the sidelines!”

“And last but certainly not least, from corners of the galaxy we know ever so little, the Chiss known as Rya!” “She’s certainly looking to make her mark on the galaxy today! Let’s see if she can pull it off!”

As the racers and their pit droids circled around their pods, making their last minute adjustments, the warning signal would illuminate below the bridge and catch everyone’s eyes. It was finally here!

'Flyboy' stood on top of his podracer, and waved to the crowd smiling as his nickname was called out. This will be fun, Aden thought. The pilot just loves moving while in a vehicle at dangerous high speeds. Racing is a good thrill, the competition, the adrenaline. This reminds him of when he totally won the skimboard race on Bespin a few years back.

To participate in this podrace, Aden didn't just buy a podracer off the market. No. As a skilled mechanic, he pieced together a podracer to his own liking, parts from various machines. The thrusters of a speeder, the head of a Y-Wing .etc The test runs went well, now how this will do on the big race, especially against the other races will be a different question.

Pit droids supervised by Aden's usual astromech droid completed any last minute adjustments. It's almost time indeed. Aden would get in helm of his racer, put his helmet on, switch on his helmet's recorder. Hands on the controls, Aden is ready to take off.

The 'Red Baron' grinned as he drank in the sounds of the crowd, the buzz in the atmosphere coursing through him like he'd spent the last few hours in the back rooms of a Nar Shaddaa bar. He'd been itching to find a race to use the Podracer he'd bought out of a junk shop on Tatooine all those years ago. He'd spent months tooling the thing up in his downtime and while he was no mechanic, he was proud of the work he'd put in. He just hoped it held together long enough to get through the laps.

Pandering to the crowd he hopped up on the side of the Pod, clapping his hands before slinking into the seat and snapping his dust goggles in place. He toyed with a few of the dials, ensuring the pit droids hadn't done anything untoward with his own adjustments. The diagnostics came back fine as he spooled up the pair of roaring V-71 and gave the engine a good seeing to with a couple of revs. He nodded to himself, shimmying in the seat once more as his eyes snapped to the illuminated grid, grin never fading. This was going to be a night to remember.

Oedipus knew absolutely nothing about the shiny hunk of chromium lookin' construction they called a 'pod racer'. In fact, his pit crew was so damn sure that the young prince would screw something up that they specifically found a model that had a simple green and red button to stop and start the engine. For his part, Oedi had seen how the circuit worked a million times before, usually, he was the one losing money betting on others but this time, and possibly for the last time, it was up to him.

Now he had technically been told by his mother (@LadyRen) that these kinds of races were particularly dangerous and had been strictly forbidden from attending. But he paid her no mind, if he lost there would be a scolding for sure, but to take the podium and win? well, his parents would have no choice but to be proud of him then.

Dusty Daytonus played up to the crowd as only a stunt racer turned politician could do. Besides being advised by practically every one of his political advisors to absolutely under no circumstances take part in this race, Dusty was looking forward to today. Having been a swoop racer in his younger days, the thrill-seeking Glymphid loved nothing more than a heart-pounding adrenaline rush of a race.

Besides, an election was coming up and if political experience and good policy wouldn't win him the day, a galactic race might be just the bump in the polls that he needed what with the FWA collapsing and all.

He surveyed the connection and laughed. Having a planets worth of resources made sure he was able to buy a top-line classic and his racing experience meant he liked chances today.

He gave the crowd another wave as his utility droid gave a cursory check on the operating systems.

Rya paid no mind to the crowd in attendance. She wasn't here for theatrics, only the prestige of winning. She'd forgone any kind of nickname specifically for that purpose. As the others played for the masses she was investigating every aspect of her podracer for the umpteenth time.

The lightning fast contraption reflected in pilot with its foreign design. It was sleek, the twin engines were an industrial gray as they lacked a paint job of any kind. That was except for the front ends of each which had been painted bright red. There was no aesthetic merit, it would simply help her eyes follow her craft in case the track made her visuals muddy.

It had been built by some old friends of hers in the Navigator's Guild, and the different design philosophies of the Unknown Regions shone through in their craftmanship. She knew it would be up to the task, so long as she piloted the craft skillfully.

Today would be the day she introduced herself to the galaxy at large, whether she made a good first impression or not remained to be seen.

“And there we have it, folks! The line up for today’s event, ready and roaring to go!”

“That was… terrible. Anyway! Before we get to the main event, a quick run down of what our racers and viewers can expect!”

“Right you are! We’re set to begin here in the capital! Safety for our citizens is always our prime concern! Racers are confined to the city’s ancient and beautiful canal system, where a variety of special little surprises will be laid out and waiting for them! A series of repulsors have been installed within the waterways to ensure that any errant pod will not cause harm to anyone or anything within the city limits!”

“Once they exit the city, it’s an entirely different game! The streets and paths that lead from the countryside to the city gates have been cleared out of civilians!”

“What about the carts, speeders, livestock?”

“I repeat; they’ve been cleared of all civilians!”

“Right! Then the course will take our racers out over the beautiful oceans of Naboo! We can expect some beautiful scenery for our participants and our viewers! Just in time for the Colo migration period!”

“After that, they’ll tear through the swamp lands on the opposite side of Theed before coming back into the city for the next lap!”

“I think it’s almost time for the race to begin! Everyone, get to your pods!

Pootalina is approaching...
Wait, she's already here?!
yqFbRSZ.png
Standing before the roaring crowds and the ready racers was a woman whose name and one eye were known all across the galaxy - to anyone with access to the HoloNet, at least. The (in)famous president of the "I <3 You, Emryc Thorne!" fan club was perched upon a floating platform, a massive flag held erect in one hand while the other waved left and right to the crowds.

Pootalina Thorne was the flag girl for this race, and she had come properly dressed of course. A sparkling pink thong bikini adorned her sticky, thick leathery tan skin, and her iconic messy blonde wig sat just above her one blue eye. Two giant pairs of heels had been squeezed onto her feet, showcasing her painted asymmetrical toes to the world. She would wiggle them for the cameras, just in case her beloved Emy-poo and his husband, Jaikus, were watching.

Too bad it was impossible to wink with just one eye, or perhaps she would've done that too.

As the announced began go count down, Pootakina shouted them out in unison. "Ready?" She struck a pose, pushing out her butt and bosom with her free hand resting on her side. "Set..." She held the flag even higher, bracing to whip it down like she wished her Beloved would [REDACTED]. She still did have those handcuffs... "GOOOOO!"

The flag would whistle through the air as she and the announcer shouted 'Go!' in unison, swinging in a downward arc as the racers flew past. Though it would soon be very apparent that the whistle was not from the speed of the moving flag, but the noxious gases that had escaped the behind of the excitable wo-rmel.

If it had a color, it'd be the color of mushy brown bananas, but green. If it had a texture, it'd be like sticking your hand into a hand puppet toy at the supermarket only to discover it was filled with the spit and saliva from whatever kid had gotten their grubby little hands on it last. If it was a sound it'd be...well, it was a high pitched squeal that somehow managed to beat the noise of the crowd and the sounding horns. It stunk like a skunk fart, curdling in the noses of the racers as they passed and inspiring thoughts of sewage, rotting food in the bottom of a dumpster, and the trash juices that soaked that rotted food through and through. It was almost acidic in the nose.

And Pootalina, of course, was none the wiser.

"WOOO! GO RACERS!!!" she shouted before turning to wink - blink - at the nearest camera. "USE CODE 'FLAG GIRL' FOR 20% OFF YOUR NEXT BULK PURCHASE OF EMRYC ENERGY!"

Oedi sat waiting at the controls for what seemed like an eternity, the other racers all around him seemed amped and ready to go. For someone who was quite accustomed to being able to do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, it was difficult to control his natural impulses to just hit the accelerator and blow his competitors behind using his secret weapon.

If it wasn't for the relentless drilling his pit crew had undertaken to ensure that he would at least partly follow the rules enough to not be disqualified, it was likely he would have done so already.

At last, the moment they had all been waiting for had arrived and the princeling, remembering his exhaustive training, smacked the big green button with glee. To his surprise, however, the multi-credit rocket pod did not explode down the track with unmatched speed but instead rolled forward with one hand behind his back causing a bewildering look across his face.

He might have been stun-locked by the magnificent Pootalina in all her glory, if not for Oedi being too busy staring at himself in the rear view mirror when suddenly he looked down to a flashing red light.

"What the fuck is a release parking brake?" he yelled into his comlink, not that it stopped his natural instinct to assume someone was cheating already.

This race has it all, fast podracers, race track women, the likes. Aden was already to go, he had hands on the controls and once the flag came down, Flyboy was focused Aden press on the controls, attempting to go fast and furious through the canals, execute any turns as need be while trying being wary of 'special little surprises'.

As Aden meticulously wears safety gear when in a ship or in a vehicle, he would he be wearing a helmet with a rebreather on it, keeping him from noticing that strange alien lady's fart cloud. Unless it starts failing him all of a sudden. That would be bad.

Millions (if not trillions) are watching around the galaxy. It would be a shame if Flyboy goofs up at the start of the race.

Byt already knew his strategy for the race; go big, or go home. He'd put on a show or burn out in a fireball, which might be one and the same for some people. He was, however, distracted by the sudden appearance of the strangest flag girl he'd ever seen crossing into the middle of the track with a near mesmerizing waddle, only snapping out of his daze when the flag was raised.

He revved the engines one more time, roaring as the guttural thrum of the life within them echoed across the canals before the flag was dropped and the race was on. He gunned it, hoping that the track was going to be a simple one as he was pinned back into the tape-strapped seat, world passing in a blur.

Dusty was put off by the sight of the flag girl. Was that what the kids were into these days?

No matter. He put distractions aside and gunned his Pod forward, going heavy on the accelerator to try and establish a lead early. If he could win swoop races this would be easy

Rya settled into her seat, tuning out all of the noise. It was definitely louder than she was accustomed to from her pathfinder days. It helped her to imagine all the sounds as systems on her ship that were lighting up with warnings. Those noises she was used to and knew how to ignore appropriately.

She gave a final check on all of her controls for responsiveness of her vehicle, every one of them performing as intended. It made it easier to take a deep breath, subconsciously holding it in due to the tension. Then at the onset of the race she'd slam her controls forward, looking to get as good a jump off the block as possible.

“And they’re off!”

“Well, most of them! It seems we’ve got some malfunctions below!”

Unfortunately for Flyboy, the rebreather he had elected to wear proved to be more of a hindrance than a benefit. As he was about to push the throttle of his backyard mechanized hell machine, even the high grade quality of Czerka Corporation’s technology had met its match against the noxious fumes that squealed from the Wermal cheeks. Just as he would push the controls forward, he would first begin to taste the toxic gases as the filters simply could not be made to expunge such filth. His eyes would water, his tongue would reel in disgust until finally,

“Did he just vomit?!”

Of course he did. Perhaps it was a good thing he was wearing it after all. Rather than spewing bile over the controls of his pod, an arguably worse result, it instead pooled and erupted from the sides of his mask and down into his lap.

@The Good Doctor

As the heavy fart cloud lifts, Flyboy will be able to begin working on catching up to the others but his pride composure has been cracked. -2 On next roll

Flyboy wasn’t the only one facing difficulties. Milk’n’Honey had perhaps bitten off more than he could chew. After all, this was a young man who’s entire life had been spent being fed by a silver spoon. Fortunately, the hand brake didn’t keep him entirely the line but instead at a slow crawl, allowing him to at least escape the horrendous fumes of the mighty Pootalina.

“With all that money he spent on his pod, perhaps he should have also paid his private driver to man it instead?”

The people of Naboo were renowned for their couth and civility. Unfortunately for Milk’n’Honey, these races had drawn in a wide array of off worlder’s who did not share in this composure and soon he would find a variety of fruits, vegetables and beer being thrown at him from the viewing pads along the canal. This was something the event sponsors had anticipated and service droids immediately descended to ensure Theed’s beauty was not tarnished and collected any waste they could find.

@Xorism

M’n’H has some ground to cover to meet with the others but he’s not out of this yet

In the middle of the pack, Dusty Trails instead created roaring waves of water thrown into the sky, soaking those on the sidelines rather than clouds of dust. Nevertheless, it was still a sight to behold by those who had come here for the event of the rotation. In a display of skill and prowess of operating machines at blinding speeds, his flame patterned Tri-ram weaved through the canals but he couldn’t find the opening he needed in the narrow waterways to get ahead of the two contenders for the top spot.

“Dusty Trails is putting on one hell of a show! Shame that the Rya and Red Baron are stealing all the mods away from him, isn’t it?”

@Fantasy Liver

10 out of 20, middle of the playing field. Not bad but not great. Still, Dusty is holding his own and is only a few dozen meters back from the leaders!

Red Baron, in his custom monstrosity of power, had absolutely no reason to worry about his position as the crowds cheered as his zipped by them, their faces all a blur as he maneuvered the banks of the canals with pinpoint precision.

“That pod is something else!” Joro exclaimed, slamming his hands down on the table.

“The pod is only half the game! The pilot is what makes the magic!”

As he approached the mouth of the canal system, only one pod keeping a lead on him before they would exit Theed out into the plains surrounding the city, a blue orb would ascend from the water and as the pod passed through it, Red Baron’s display would indicate that he had managed to locate himself a single-use Coaxium fuel cell!

@Pendleton

The Red Baron has earned himself a single use speed boost bonus! +2 on next speed related roll!

“And taking an early lead, Rrrrrrrrya!!”

She had come here to make a name for herself, and she was off to a fantastic start! Despite anything Red Baron tried to do, he couldn’t slip past the Chiss’ pod. She was the embodiment of speed itself, moving at such a blinding pace that the sounds of the crowds couldn’t even be heard as she erupted from the canal system and out into the plains. Much like the Red Baron, as she crossed the threshold between city and country, a blue orb descended from above and she would be notified by her pit crew that a Blackwell Nanotech Repair Kit had been installed in her pod!

@Pazaakly

She is outta here! Rya can utilize the repair kit to negate any damage she sustains in future posting rounds, but this remains a single use item!

As each racer makes their way out of the city limits of Theed, they would see a rayshield with holographic arrows pointing them up and away from the river and onto the old paved roads that brought foot traffic in through the city’s main gates. The roads had been cleared of any civilian owned obstructions, but similar shields would raise and lower themselves at random intervals along the way. Behind some of said shields, more blue orbs like those found by Rya and Red Baron could be seen.

Current Standings!
  1. Rya
  2. Red Baron
  3. Dusty Trails
  4. Milk’n’Honey

Dusty cackled madly as his adrenaline was up and the cheers from the crowd overtook his senses. Politics, the collapse of the FWA, his own inadequacies as a sentient being, they all evaporated before him and the only thing left was the race. It had always been the race to the Glymphid. Every other distraction in life was Dusty's attempt to recapture that same thrill that racing brought him and though he might have aged out of being a swooper, today he intended to give his old fans in the galaxy a showing they'd never forget.

He gunned his engines, going for pure instincts to overcome the ray shields ahead of him. He carefully thrusted and braked in time with the ray shields, being careful to not give up too much speed in his pursuit to sail through the open gaps in the shields. He aimed his Pod towards the most promising looking of the orbs, trying his best to make his way to the front of the pack.

Byt was hammering it along the track, roaring engine filling the narrowing streets as he banked left and right. Do what he might to zip around @Rya, the racer proved as stubborn as she was skilful; each attempt to use the pull of the mighty engines was kept at bay. He would bide his time, grinning as he banked hard and up onto the old paved roads. His boost meter began to pulse on his console and fill to the brim, the pulsing blue orb that contained Coaxium fuel cell sucked up into the scoop under his Racer. He would hold on to it for now.

He did what he could to maintain his speed, banking left and right in sync with the Shields as they raised and lowered. He janked particularly swiftly to the right at one, aiming the same scoop that had taken the fuel cell but a moment before at the promise of another item. It was always hard to aim at the orbs, but whatever the outcome was he would gun it once again, giving the crowd as much of a show as he could.

Rya felt good. She had timed everything perfectly and was enjoying clear space ahead of her because of it. With no one ahead of her it would be easy to focus on the track instead of the need to outmaneuver anyone else in an effort to jockey for position. Engines were humming beautifully with a noise that felt music to her ears. The perfect soundtrack to speed through a city as eye-catching as this.

She would like to think that what happened next was the fault of her pit crew. The droids she'd commissioned for this purpose were informing her of a boon she'd been granted as a result of her fine flying. Or maybe it was because she was too good. Too quick that she couldn't quite get a sense for the obstacles ahead.

Or it was none of the above and the true culprit was her overconfidence. All that mattered is a very unfortunately timed rayshield would pop up directly beneath her pods and sending the vehicle airborne in the process. Good thing the streets had been cleared for the event.

The cloudy start notwithstanding, the start of the race could have gone better for the shiny prince. Some of the other competitors had shot ahead which just wouldn't do. Thrashing the accelerator, he hoped that his mirror-finished pod racer would make quick work of the others and scoot back into first where he belonged.

Clearly, the people of this world were too well fed if they threw their excess vegetables and other foodstuffs into the arena rather than consume it. Perhaps after the race was over, he thought, he could offer the rulers some suggestions on how best to manage these unruly peasants to better behave in the future.

Assuming he could fit in the meeting between the bath and massage that he had planned for, of course.

This is turning out to be a total nightmare for Flyboy, already. He must have passed over some really toxic chemicals, oblivious to the Wermal causing it. The rebreather he had was turning to be a liability, as he is throwing up but it's stuck in his mask. It was really gross and he had trouble even racing at this point, he couldn't even steer the pod racer in a straight line or maintain a decent amount of speed, evidenced by him being in last place, watching everyone else move forward ahead of him.

At least no one put any betting money on Flyboy. Right? Right?

Aden would now attempt to redouble his efforts to get his situation under control, stop throwing up, stop the spew from distracting him, and attempt to gain some speed. Get something going. It would be really humiliating for Aden if he got lapped.

Bouncing off the walls of the canal system as he attempted to regain his composure, Flyboy’s pod struggled to gain the momentum it needed to make any serious gains in the race. Really, who could blame him? Being lathered in your own vomit was hardly a state of being one would desire when they’re in the middle of the race of the decade. It would take some time but finally, the pod would make its way out of the waterways and finally cross over into the Outer City streets.

If Flyboy thought his problems ended there though, he was about to be disappointed.

While the streets had been cleared of civilians, it still remained outside the city walls and was quite accessible to the natural fauna of Naboo. Emboldened by the lack of sentients, a small flock of a half dozen Odupiendo had begun snooping through the area in search of an easy meal. Flyboy had unknowingly provided it. His pod had not yet reached a fast velocity and the throwup in his mask and lap threw off such a delightful aroma to the avian track stars that it couldn’t be ignored. It wouldn’t take long before they would run alongside the pod, pecking ferociously wherever they could find the alluring meal. Unfortunate then, that much of it landed in his lap.

“Ohhh man! Flyboy just isn’t having much luck!

“Do you think an athlete’s cup was part of his safety precautions?

@The Good Doctor

May the dice gods show you some reprieve! No negative mods next roll!

“What’s this?! Rya’s running into some issues!

Indeed a ray shield projected upward underneath the race forerunner’s craft, throwing the twin engines and pilot pod into the air. The sound of the engines echoed around the streets with pulses of power but the Chiss pilot would struggle to regain control before the thrusters slammed into the pavement, sending the craft skidding to a stalled halt.

The dashboard readout flashed red, an indication showing the right thruster had suffered catastrophic damage to its oscillator. Fortunately, she still had access to the Blackwell Nanotech Repair Kit, but it would take some time to get the racer back in the game.

“She better hurry! Flyboy and his flock are catching up! Slowly, sure, but still!”

“There certainly isn’t any time for naps! Get your pod in gear, Rya!”

@Pazaakly

Oof! Rough Luck! -2 on your next roll to accommodate the time needed for repairs!

“And just like that, we can see how quickly things change at these sorts of speeds!

As Rya soared through the air and slammed down into the ground, three blurs would whiz by so quickly she could hardly make them out. That is, except for the final pod, it’s chrome surface glistening brightly from the sun’s rays.

“Milk’n’Honey is back in the race! Look at him go!

The now only slightly sticky pod careened through the obstacles, the confidence of it’s pilot that had so nearly cost him now bringing him back as a contender. As he passed by the stalled pod of Rya, a blue orb would appear as a shield fell, the pod collecting it as it passed! The display would then show the Juvexian Prince a gift; his pod had now been equipped with a Clone Wars era Buzz Droid!

@Xorism

Noice! Get close to another racer and the Buzz Droid will attack, taking 2 points away from their same-round roll!

“At the front it’s… Oh my stars!”

“They’re neck and neck!”

Red Baron and Dusty Trails, side by side as they swayed through the obstacles, could see the hard left bank approaching that would take them over a narrow pier with similar shields to each side. One would have to overtake the other to ensure they didn’t both crash in a fiery inferno, but it seemed that after they had both torn below the pod of Rya as she soared through the air above them, neither could gain the upper hand. Near simultaneously, each racer was then able to collect a bonus orb, as the left turn quickly approached.

Dusty Trails veered off to the left and narrowly missed one of the shields, no doubt attributed to his masterful skill at the controls of his pod, as he collected the sphere. Once, twice, three times his display flashed before it was revealed that he had been given a smoke bomb, the perfect utility item to cover his actions or disguise an obstacle from his opponents!

@Fantasy Liver

Dusty Trails’ smoke bomb, much like the buzz droid, can be utilized to apply a -1 to a specified racer’s same-round roll!

Whereas Red Baron, who had elected to not use the bonus he had already acquired, moved to collect another orb on the right side of the outer city streets. As he did so, he received a prompt that required his attention once the image of the Nanotech Repair Kit appeared.

”Would you like to replace your speed boost with the Repair Kit?”

@Pendleton

This is my bad for not explaining it better at the beginning but only one bonus can be carried at a time. Red Baron can now choose between the two but can utilize just one this round. The other will be scrapped.

No matter who crossed the narrowly shielded pier first, it was soon clear the next leg of the race was to take place over the open water of Naboo’s oceans. The capital of Theed loomed on the horizon, the sky behind it growing inky black as the storm had begun to close in. Repulsor buoys with flashing red lights marked the path they would follow, a long and windy path that pulled ever to the right. It would be difficult to for the racers to see but about ten kilometers out into the ocean, viewers would catch a glimpse of a transparisteel tunnel that descended down into the water wide enough for two pods to race side by side and just enough space above that if one were daring, they might be able to squeeze by. The rest of the ocean leg of the track appeared free of obstacles, but these are the waters of Naboo and nothing here was as serene as it may seem…

Current Standings!
