Nar Shaddaa reminded Varyn of home, and that wasn't a good thing. The planet had almost entirely recovered from AMS after years of trying with only the absolute worst, quarantined pockets and deepest levels still manifesting infected. Most of the planet had finally returned to business as usual.

Varyn had made his way here in an attempt to track down a man by the name of Sheen Yargo. The name had come to Varyn's attention a while ago as a man who had worked for the Cartel creating false ship transponders for smugglers as well as doing a variety of refits and renovations for pirates, spice runners, and more. Then he'd gotten uppity and killed some made member of the Cartel in an attempt to move up and someone had put a bounty on his head.

Honestly, Varyn didn't really care about the outcomes for the guy. He was another scumball killing scumballs and out for himself. Jedi-like or not, Varyn was here because he needed either the man's expertise or some of his pre-made IDs.

Dressed in his covert armor and with his lightsaber strategically hidden out of sight, he'd opted to bring a blaster and a couple of spare powerpacks as well. It was likely to draw far less scrutiny than a lightsaber.

He stopped at an open stall area, ordering himself a ronto roaster and popping off his helmet, hanging it from his belt as he took a bite. He pondered his next best line in tracking this guy down and wondered to himself if he'd run across other hunters after Sheen for an entirely different reason: money.

Aeron Mathis sat reclined in his captain’s chair rolling a credit chit across the fingers of his right hand. His tracking fob was updating, and he wondered what poor fool he’d be hauling in.

Why do I do this?” he mused.

It was the same question he asked himself before every hunt. Was it for the glory? No, the only way to get any mention of glory was to join the guild and that wasn’t in the cards. He knew his work, of course, but his greed and desperation early on had left a grimey stain on his reputation. It was amazing what people could be convinced to do for wealth, but maybe he was biased.

The light on the fob blinked twice and his datapad began downloading the job packet. He reached over and plucked up the pad with his prosthetic and read the briefing.

Sheen Vargo. ID manipulator and, apparently, a little big for his britches. The employer was some middle management made man for The Cartel. Aeron had stayed clear of The Syndicates. He liked his freedom. Being tied down to serve some slug wasn’t his bag. He tapped his index finger on his knee as he weighed the job. Overall it was routine. The price was good. He hit accept.

As soon as the mission was accepted Sheen’s last known addresses started coming in. A few written testimonies popped up.“I’ve heard so and so say that–” or “He was a shit in school and he’s a shit now–” Same bs, never helpful.

Aeron sighed, ”Looks like this is gonna have to be done the old-fashioned way.

A couple of frustratingly tedious hours later he was walking down the street to the last address on his list. His tracking fob hadn’t picked up a damn thing the entire time and the fact that he was wearing his full gear wasn’t making things easier. He’d donned his basic full face helm with voice scrambler, his right arm had a bola launcher attached to his wrist, and his left was… well it was a durasteel plated prosthetic. He’d slid into his armor and decided to bring his Stun pistol holstered on his thigh, and his carbine strapped to his shoulder, finally, he had two vibroblades on him. One sheathed on the opposite side of his stun gun and one on his lower back.

Suddenly, his fob began to ping. Aeron lifted it and scanned the surroundings. The address he’d been heading toward was getting a big reaction. He took in the mercantile shop. It appeared Sheen used a cover business, not bad, but hardly original. Aeron silenced the fob and slipped down an alley parallel to the shop. Once out of the public eye, he slipped the stun gun from it’s holster.

Time to go to work.

Varyn continued to munch down the remainder of his roaster and washed it down with a cup of meiloorun juice before sliding his helmet back into place. His tip said that Sheen had started working out of this... really trashy-looking shop across the way. He didn't see the bounty hunter sneaking around the side alley, but he did have a vague sense of... unease. Something was off, though whether that was with the bounty or something else, he didn't know.

He tried to center his focus on the here and now, not letting it wander across the galaxy to the work he had been doing for the last two years. He had business now, and meditation could come later.

He crossed the street and his eyes swept over the building, looking for his entry point. He noted a small landing platform on the second level with an entryway into the building. No doubt for speeders to be easily parked and worked on, and he decided that was as good an entry as any.

He moved to the rear of the building and leapt up, using the Force to enhance his strength and placed a foot against one of the adjacent walls. He pressed off and sprung upward, his hands catching onto the ledge of the balcony before hoisting himself up and over, landing in a smooth crouch.

Remember, alive is preferable, Varyn, he reminded himself as he slipped the pistol from his holster and flipped it over to stun.

Without further hesitation, he moved into the second story, pistol extended in front of him and ears peeled. He still couldn't shake that feeling though. It was like having someone stand right behind you, watching and judging what you did. It reminded him of one of his least favorite aspects of Temple life - ironically both Jedi and Sith - and he hated it.

Aeron rounded the corner at the end of the alley. He’d come out further down from the back of Sheen’s shop than he’d expected. His stun gun nearly spit as he watched a being clad in what looked like hunter armor parkour onto the second-floor landing. Aeron’s mouth spilled over into one of his many frowns as he tried to fathom what he’d just seen.

What the—” his eyes widened as his professional paranoia went into overdrive. There was a second hunter. Was he being burned? Was he known to the other hunter? He needed that karking money. Aeron cast subtly to the wind. He sprinted forward reaching the back door of Sheen’s shop in a hurry, he smashed the open button on the door panel, but nothing happened. He pressed it again, this time he was rewarded with a divisive blurt from the POS, so, he shot it.

The door hissed open and a guy on the other side squawked in alarm. Aeron didn’t hesitate he fired. The stun bolt hit him in the chest, dropping him like a sack of potatoes. Aeron pulled out his fob and held it to the man, nothing, but it did start beeping in rapid succession. Sheen was close. This mark having employees was concerning. It meant he was either guarded or this was an actual fabrication shop add another hunter into this mess and you had a great start to a spectacular shit show.

A protocol droid’s effeminate gasp let Aeron know he’d stood still too long. Keeping his stun gun in his right and holding the fob in his left, The Hunter rushed forward seeking to take cover against the wall. He could hear multiple beings moving around, not rushing, not scared, they were getting ready. The droid hurried away shouting, "INTRUDER!!"

"Dammit..."

Varyn continued through the building, each step placed carefully and moving quickly. Before he could make it far, though, he heard the sound of blasterfire, a shout of "intruder" and a general shuffle moving around below.

This caused his pace to quicken, and he knew immediately this must have been what he was feeling. Problem was, Varyn still didn't know what was actually going on. He'd have thought he was the intruder, but that didn't explain the gunfire downstairs.

He moved down the stairs quickly, unknowingly stumbling into the room where all the people were preparing to confront Aeron.

Crap! he spat as his blaster shot out the first round. It struck one of the men squarely in the chest and knocked him to the ground and he moved on, firing again at the next man but missing. He started to scramble backwards up the stairs as everyone turned their attention toward him and away from the door Aeron was behind.

Most importantly, Varyn saw no sign of the man he was looking for, but maybe his work was still here? Time would tell, but first... he had to deal with the people shooting at him. Blasterfire chewed up the wall of the stairwell Varyn had retreated up, leaving scorch marks and the smell of burnt metal in the air.

Aeron’s back was to the wall, blaster fire peppered the corner, and the fingers of his right hand drummed rhythmically on the butt of his stun gun. A smile had crept onto his face when the first bolt sent duracrete fragments into the side of his helmet. His current position was precarious. There was a service window back the way he’d come that could be used to flank him and his only way forward was down the hall everyone was aiming at.

Crap!” followed by immediate blaster fire.

Huh?” Aeron peeked around the corner and saw the feet of someone firing down from upstairs. What the hell was going on?

Aeron moved. He used the distraction created to sprint down the hall. Two men were running upstairs guns letting loose.

Aeron slammed his shoulder into the man who'd been guarding the hall before he'd had time to register the thundering footfalls heading his way. The man yelped blaster discharging and killing the man next to him. Aeron fired on third clipping him in the shoulder. His eyes went wide as his arm went limp, then then the consciousness was snuffed out. Finally, Areon put a bolt in the guy he’d rammed. Felt bad about the one that died, but if they were shooting to kill then he was the fool for not killing the lot of them.

Mathis didn’t linger. He took cover keeping the entrance from the stairs clear, but in sight. He pulled the fob and held it up scanning the area.

The mechanical shuffling of the protocol droid nearly scared the crap out of him. Instinctively he aimed in the droid's direction taking his focus from the stairs to solely on the droid.

Where’s Sheen?

Oh, I-I don’t kno–

A stun bolt hit the wall next to the droid and it wailed.

Down the hall, in the basement, please d–” the stun bolt cut the droid off. Now that Aeron thought about it, he wasn’t really sure what effect stun bolts had on droids. He shrugged and then panicked remembering he wasn’t the only hunter here.

Varyn really had no idea what was going on anymore. Someone else was shooting, and he could only assume it was either a rival gang or a bounty hunter or... something. This was Nar Shaddaa, after all, it could have just been a wrong place, wrong time thing.

He wasn't sure what he'd do if he confronted whoever this other guy was, but he supposed that would depend on if he was being shot on. Cross the bridge when you come to it, he told himself. He peeked back down just in time to see someone interrogating the protocol droid and getting some answers. In the basement, but as Varyn reached out his senses he... didn't sense anyone in the basement. Perhaps there was a back exit out? He'd have said the droid was lying, but most protocol droids didn't seem able. It was against proper protocol they said. Unless they were reprogrammed.

Who the kriff are you? he asked as he appeared at the bottom of the stairs, pistol raised but deliberately not firing. His sense stretched out to the Force, looking for any indication the other man would strike first. He probably should have just shot him and moved on his own, but that wasn't really necessary.

He started moving toward the basement - or what he guessed was the basement - anyway in the hopes they may not lose their target too badly.

Unfortunately, that was when the Wookiee popped in. From one of the other sides of the shop, he barged in, ready to bodily throw both of them across the room. Even unarmed he was nothing to scoff at given his ability to... disarm people.

Who the Kriff are you?” said a mechanically distorted voice. Aeron whipped around weapon raised and aimed at the newcomer’s center.

Aeron Mathis, bounty hunter. I’m looking for Sheen Yargo, know where he is?

Before the other hunter could say anything the Wookie showed up. A sharp hiss from a door to Aeron’s right announced the arrival of the bugling brute.

Kriff…

There was an air of menace that superseded the Wookie’s ferocity. Obviously, this behemoth knew their bloody work, and the scars along it’s muzzle were it’s testimony. Black and grey fur flowed along it’s massive body. Even for a Wookie, this one, was BIG. Instinctively, Aeron switched to his carbine. There was something thrilling about a challenge. This would be a free for all. One on one on one.

The other hunter meant nothing once the Wookie started charging. Aeron fired but the hulking beast was nimble. Blaster marks scored the floor and slammed into the walls. Aeron dove out of the way scrambling to find cover. He'd lost track of the other hunter altogether by now. The filing cabinet he was pressed up against exploded papers sprayed out of it like confetti. Aeron was thrown forward, he sprawled onto his stomach, carbine clattering to the floor.

Aeron flipped onto his back pulling his stun gun with practiced precision and firing two shots at the Wookie, aimed at center mass. He evoked whatever deity he could as he scrambled backward searching for cover.

Bounty hunter. Great, so that wasn't the complication that Varyn needed on this job. Well, maybe they could still work together. Split the money or even just let the other guy have the money and Varyn got the other thing he was here for.

As it turned out, there was no time to introduce himself or cut a deal because the Wookiee was absolutely out for blood. Varyn felt a bit of relief that it went for the other guy (which was probably a terrible thought but what could you do), and for a brief moment, Varyn considered just bolting for the basement.

His sense got the better of him, though whether it was the compassionate side saying he couldn't leave the man to die by himself or the practical side that said he'd later have to fight the Wookiee alone, who could say?

Spitting another curse, Varyn spun back from the basement, raising his pistol and cocking the hammer back. He fired into the hairy back and the stun round found its mark. Charged to the power of a full heavy blaster, it certainly hit like a truck, but it still didn't knock the Wookiee down. Not that he could say he was that surprised, but he had been hoping at least.

In fact, it just seemed to enrage the guy more, and he bellowed loudly again. No doubt the ruckus was starting to attract attention from outside, and he wondered how long before they'd be contending with other people as well.

He fired again, but this time it was his turn to be the Wookiee victim. His arm was smacked off course and the stun bolt flew wide into the wall. He narrowly avoided the follow up punch that he was pretty sure would have broken his sternum if it had connected. Thank the Force for... well, the Force.

He leapt back and dodged again, hopefully opening the Wookiee up for a final shot from the other guy. And hopefully not a final shot on Varyn because that would suck.

Rage was a valuable tool, but to be consumed by it was folly. The bolts he’d fired hadn’t done shab to stop the hulking mass of sentient hair and fangs, but the blaster bark of another weapon brought Aeron’s attention back to the other hunter. This was the second time he’d saved Aeron’s ass.

As soon as The Wookie whirled away from him and charged the other guy. Aeron scrambled to his feet and snatched his bladed carbine from the ground. He sprinted toward the maniac and drew back the double blades prepared to stab the beast in the back. He’d tried to play nice, but good stun guns and compliant captives were hard to find.

Shut. UP!

The razor-sharp blades punched into The Wookie’s back with ease. He retracted and struck again, catching his opponent in the side as they tried to round on him. The fierce bellow had dwindled to barely more than a high-pitched whine as the hulking being slumped to it’s knees. Weakly it reached up to Aeron it’s big razor-sharp claws reaching toward his face. Aeron shot them in the chest. The Wookie fell back, dead before he hit the ground. In reality, the final shot was a courtesy. Even with all of his adversary’s resilience two feet of steel crisscrossing your innards would have ended in a slow and painful death.

Aeron turned his attention to the other hunter. Gore-smeared carbine aimed at center mass. If there was no hostility in the other, he’d lower his weapon, but it’d be kept at the ready.

Talk while we walk?

Mathis trotted toward the basement.

Who are you, and what do you want with Sheen?

Varyn watched as the Wookiee went down in a heap, dead on the ground. Varyn hadn't wanted to kill him, but it was kill or be killed. Well, plus he hadn't actually done the killing. He shook the thought from his head, watching the way the other man still tried to determine if Varyn was a threat. He supposed he couldn't blame him, but he seemed to ease a bit after a moment.

Faster than walk, he agreed. He could already sense the unease from the people outside, and he knew they were going to be investigating soon. Probably none too happy that a couple of outsiders had beaten up and killed some locals. Varyn didn't want to stick around to test his theory.

He moved quickly toward the door to the basement, descending even as he could hear the door to the shop slide open.

Ay Gar, you alright? We heard blasters! a voice shouted from behind them, and Varyn didn't stop to investigate.

Shut the door, he said, keeping his eyes in the back of his head open in case this guy turned on him.

Multiple things, he said, looking around the basement as he looped around to Aeron's question again.

One part to bring him in for the bounty and one part because I need something from him, he said. He didn't elaborate on the "what" but he made sure to keep an eye in the other man's direction when he mentioned interest in the bounty. If he was going to get uppity, Varyn would be ready.

He's already gone and I think we have about 30 seconds to find a clue here before his friends come down, he said. Sure, Varyn was looking for clues, but he was also looking for transponder chips, reprocessing equipment, or anything else that might be valuable to him.

Surviving the Wookie left Aeron with a small sense of pride. It had been a handful of years since he’d faced down something like that. The only thing tarnishing the victory was his need for assistance. Aeron knew without the other hunter he would have been screwed and that grated at him. It was plain as day. He was old and eventually his luck would run out, and the galaxy would be a better place.

The smaller hunter jogged up next to Aeron, then pulled ahead. They passed a door and a voice called out. Aeron stepped into the doorway and fired three shots. He hit the Weequay square in the chest from point blank range. He wasn’t sure what kind of armor the man was wearing but Aeron doubted he’d be getting back up any time soon. Quickly, he scanned the room saw that it was clear, shut the door, and blasted the panel. The door hiss’d shut as sparks rained from the panel.

Aeron picked up the pace and caught up with his “Partner” as they said, “Multiple things.

Huh?

One part bring him in for the bounty–” Aeron remembered what he’d asked, “–and one part because I need something from him.

Aeron chewed on that a moment, “I’m only interested in the bounty. I’m open to splitting it, but I’m not gonna waste time helping you look for something. Fair?

He wasn’t thrilled to split the cash, but two blasters were better than one.It wasn’t hard for Aeron to guess what the other thing was. Sheen worked for the Cartel creating false transponders. From what he’d read on Yargo the man was damn good at his job. Almost gave Aeron pause. If he was being hunted, was he being burned?

As they entered the room, Aeron could tell someone had just left and did so in a hurry. He pulled his fob out and scanned the room. The red light pulsed but didn’t sound. They were close. He started scanning the room. Various equipment containers and boxes were scattered and tipped, their contents spilling out across the floor. He looked back to his fob, he couldn’t understand. The light was slowing, the target was getting further away.

There’s gotta be a way out of here we aren’t seeing.

Varyn couldn't say he was shocked that the other guy wasn't going to help him, but splitting the fare didn't sound like such a bad deal.

Good as I'm gonna get, he speculated, looking around the room and letting not just his eyes but also his senses in the Force sweep over the area.

He'd have loved to have it leap out and say "here's the secret exit" but he didn't have that kind of luck. What he did notice, though, after several moments of looking was that there was scrapes along the ground where it looked like a cabinet had been moved repeatedly.

Here! he said, tension mounting as he could sense the people from outside looking around. Their own anxiety mounting as they pushed further in and found the dead. Varyn could hear more shouting from above and knew they needed out of here.

He shifted the cabinet to the side and a door slid open.

Go, go, he said, slipping down the tunnel as well. It smelled old and musty. The floor was scattered with some unknown liquid that he hoped wasn't sewage. He had no idea where it would dump out, but he had to assume that it wasn't going to be friendly.

He followed down and busted out the other end directly into an open market. He swore under his breath with no sight of their target anywhere.

Here!

Aeron’s head whipped around. Confusion receded as revelation spilled forth. His frown upended leaving an ugly smile sprawled across his face, luckily his helmet hid it from view. He rushed forward helping the other being get into the passage.

Aeron was first through the breech. He switched his HUD into thermal and the darkness shifted into mottled hues of blue, and yellow. With fob in one hand and stun gun in the other Aeron barreled down the dank passage. He thanked his lucky star he’d worn his helmet. The undulating colors let him know they were in a sewer. The gasses acted as a beacon lighting his way as he passed by numerous drains.

Luckily enough, Sheen hadn’t seen fit to leave anyone behind to slow them down, or maybe he was out of goons. Either answer fit Aeron just fine. As he neared the end fo the tunnel he returned his HUD to it’s standard setting and came to a skittering stop as the mouth of the passage dumped them into a crowded street market. Stalls lined the street and vendors proffered their wears. The street between was teeming with eager buys haggling and shouting over one another making it nearly impossible to spot anyone making a run for it.

The hunter lifted his fob, the small red light began to pulse and the alarm sounded. The other hunter came out and cursed. Aeron agreed with his sentiment until the klaxon call of his fob sang it’s sweet music. He caught a glimpse of a slender being slipping into an alley.

This way!

Aeron darted off in the direction of the alley. He was more Rancor than man as he shouldered and barged through the crowd. Squawks and squeals of outrage, dismay, and pain added to the symphony of chaos being sown across the avenue. He was just starting to think things couldn’t get much more intense until he rounded the corner and nearly ran smack dab into a horde of infected….

Varyn watched the man make his way through the crowd at top speed. Clearly he knew where he was going... either that or he'd decided that moving in any direction was better than no direction. Whichever the answer, Varyn didn't argue and continued to move in the open path behind the man.

It was only as they rounded the corner that Varyn skidded to a halt. There shouldn't have been infected up here. They were confined mostly to the lower levels. Even the Syndicates had known that letting infected roam the streets was bad for everyone.

Varyn's finger flipped the switch on his pistol, transitioning it to lethal before raising it and firing.

The infected hissed that guttural, gurgling sound as they started to lunge forward. It was an odd thing to see everyone united, but the sound caused those closest in the market to glance over before shouts of "infected!" went up throughout the entire market. Various criminals, scum, and general trouble makers all scrambled over, blasters drawn as they opened fire into the alley.

For his part, Varyn had to scramble back, barely avoiding being shot by his newfound "allies" as the alley turned into an uncrossable canal of death. Green, blue, and orange blaster shots streaked through the air, tearing up everything, and Varyn's own shots joined them.

By the time it was done, Varyn knew that they had little chance of catching up to their target anymore, which left a new question.

We're going to have to regroup and pick up new leads, he said. You still interested in partnering up? he asked. Varyn wouldn't have been offended if the answer was a "no" but it seemed like they worked better together than separate. At least to him.

Aeron was starting to wonder if this job was worth it. The fob on his belt beeped in decreasing succession as Sheen moved further and further away. The infected had been unexpected. He was still trying to figure out if that was planned, or if Sheen was the luckiest creep in the outer rim. His prosthetic left hand spazzed as sparks crackled across his knuckles. Aeron was out.

Nah, this ain't for me. Here,” Aeron pulled the fob from his belt and tossed it to the other hunter. “I don't like the way the chits are falling. Good luck.

He dipped his head in a blunt farewell and turned the corner slipping into the market they’d just troped through. He flexed his left hand, opening and closing it, while considering his loss. This was one of those jobs that left him with more questions than answers. Who was the hunter he’d wound up working with? What did the cartel want with Sheen? Did it really matter?

Aeron chuckled to himself as he made for the spaceport. He’d spent too much time on Nar, it was time to move on. A change of scenery would be nice, maybe get out away from the politics of The Smuggler's Moon. He wasn't sure, but he was positive he didn't want his name on anyone's radar.

Varyn supposed he shouldn't have been shocked when the other man backed out. Blasterfire continued to lance out at the infected in the alley, and Varyn was suddenly left on his own. He tapped a pair of fingers to his helmet as the other man walked away.

He had his own work to do now. He'd still find Sheen, keep the money, and get his sliced ID transponders. Or at least, he hoped so.

With that, he turned off to the next lead he might be able to find, following the Force as it led him through the pit of this planet.
