In the back of her mind, Vahliri knew they were taking an unnecessary risk. There was a simple, cold calculus that told her to dispatch the Imperials without another thought - to not even check if they were Joined and be done with the entire unsavory matter. It was the safest thing - it was what she should have done.. And yet the half-Annfyn couldn’t. Perhaps it was the hesitation that was painted over Tazlen’s face that kept her from taking that step. Or perhaps it was the thought of what Altair would say, if the Tiefling was the one standing beside her. Whatever the reason, Vahliri couldn’t go through with the execution.

Instead, she reached out with the Force - reaching into the mind of the trooper closest too her. Without mental defenses or the Force, it was childplay to see into the man’s thoughts - and the half-Annfyn immediately regretted the decision once there. In an instant, the half-Annfyn was overwhelmed with the sheer volume of voices, visions and emotions that surged through the Hivemind - a million difference consciousnesses and individual drones that she tapped into at once. The experience lasted only a moment, but it was long enough to send a spike of agony through her mind. And, worse yet, alerted the entire hivemind to Vahliri’s intentions and presence. Before Vahliri could reach for saber, the half-Annfyn watched as the Joined soldiers dropped in unison. Her gaze snapped back in the direction of Nails, immediately spotting the smug expression plastered across the woman’s face.

Rather than say anything, Vahliri opted to give Nails something to look at through her scope - proceeding to flash the woman her middle finger from long range.

With arms folded over her chest, Vahliri followed them down as the Resistance group began to change into the Imperial uniforms - allowing her amber eyes to linger on the faces of those who had fallen. They were men and women the half–Annfyn knew, and there was solace in the fact they had freed her companions from a fate worse than death. None of that, however, changed the simple fact that they had taken a risk unnecessary. She had hesitated, and they were under the gun now because of it. It was a harsh lesson that Vahliri wouldn’t soon forget.

Her gaze lingered on Tazlen and Nails nearby quietly - watching the exchange between the two of them without saying a single word. She heard the jokes that were cracked, saw the playful nudges between the two of them, and could recognize the fondness that glimmered in the sniper’s eyes with a vibrancy all its own. And just as clear, Vahliri could see the almost detached, casual expression in comparison. Vahliri stared, and for a split moment, the half-Annfyn couldn’t help but see herself standing right in Nail’s place. It was an image that immediately caused her fluted ears to flatten with discomfort and her jaw to set into a firm line. It was a bitter reminder of her own reality that seemed to follow her even in the crisis they faced.

“If I pull any bullshit, I’ll be sure to deal with you first.” She fired right back at Nails with a smirk, walking right ahead at the front of the group.” They had their uniforms, and a destination clear in their mind. Their only task now was to reach it before the base fell - and to keep out of sight from the Kiliks on their way. “The base is still a few clicks north of here.” As they began to walk, Vahliri glanced back at Tazlen - her gaze cold and vacant as she made his eyes. “We can’t afford to hesitate, the next time.” It wasn’t quite the ‘I told you so’ that the Jedi was likely expecting, but a reminder nonetheless that Vahliri had been right in the end.

It didn’t take the group long to retrieve their bikes and immediately begin the journey north and towards the base - blitzing through the mountainous terrain. At Vahliri’s instructions, they had taken a detour through some of the denser forest and vegetation - weaving between ancient trees and brush. The route was markedly slower, though it provided cover to the group from any Kiliks that flew overhead attempting to track them down.

“Fall in line behind me once we arrive at the base. If we’re luckily, they won’t ask too many questions and we’ll pass through security checkpoints without issue. There will be a number of shuttles for you to sneak about and find a way off the planet from there.” She glanced back over her shoulder. “No bullshit.” The group was being allowed right past security and into the Imperial fortifications, and she had no doubt some of them were already beginning to consider what damage could be done from the inside.

From within the dense forest, however, the group was completely oblivious to the plumes of smoke highing from the base.

Tazlen kept his mouth shut as the Sith reminded him that they couldn’t hesitate. It was better than the severe tongue lashing he expected. She did love hearing herself talk, after all. Nails chuckled and jutted her chin at Vahliri.

“Right back atcha, bitch,”
The woman quipped back with a grin. Tazlen wouldn’t say it aloud, but he was convinced under different circumstances, the two of them would actually be close friends. He looked over at Tank and nudged him.

“Stop looking so nervous,” He whispered to the Feeorin, “You belong here, remember?”

Tank only grimaced and tried to loosen up his stride. Resistance members despised Sith more than anyone, so the group was having a tough time adjusting to these roles. Nevertheless, they made it to the base entrance without incident. Tazlen’s sensitive ears could immediately pick up commotion on the other side.

“Ah, Champion Kahtal,” One of the Imperials greeted her, “Good to see you again. We feared you dead,” He didn’t touch on the fact that the soldiers didn’t bother verifying before ditching her, “We had some Killik attack the south entrance and are in the process of evacuating,” He looked past her and at Tazlen and the others, “We can have a shuttle prepared for you but troopers are remaining behind to hold down the fort.”

Tazlen gritted his teeth. He glanced over at Nails to remind her to keep her cool. This all depended on the Sith now. If they were stuck on the planet without her, she had effectively just handed them over to their deaths.

Vahliri couldn’t resist the urge to flash Nail’s an overly smug, shit-earing grin - flashing the sniper a wink as they passed. In the deepest recesses of her mind, the half-Annfyn could see the stark similarities between the two of them, and if circumstances were different, perhaps they might even get along. But circumstances weren’t different at all, and she knew they neither of the would hesitate to laid out the other if necessary. In some sense, she respected the sniper for it more than the alternative.

The ride to the base was largely uneventful - free of any attacks from Kilik’s or other enemies. As they approached the gates, Vahliri glanced back at Tank - offering the Feeorin a small smile. Out of everyone, she didn’t mind the big guy whatsoever. “Trust me, ain’t nothing to worry about. I have this handled.”

Her sensitive hearing picked up on the commotion even before the Imperial walked up to greet them. At once, the half-Annfyn’s arms crossed over her chest - her demeanor shifting a bit more serious as she listened to the man. “Not yet,” She quipped back in the middle of his speech when he mentioned her potentially being dead, lips twitching upwards in a way that was entirely too frosty to be comfortable.

Her fluted ears flattened the slightest bit when the Imperial proclaimed that her troops would be staying. She knew that would be a possibility even before arriving at the base, especially as Imperials attempted to retreat with as few casualties as possible. In an instant, Vahliri could abandon Tazlen and the others without so much as a second thought. She could walk into a shuttle, and leave the group to be discovered, tortured and imprisoned - if they weren’t thrown right back to the Kilik’s first. And yet, she couldn’t help but lingered on Tazlen’s earlier words.

Before the man could continue, Vahliri simply raised a hand to cut him off. “What is the integrity of the base? Currently?” Her head tilted. “As a matter of fact, they won’t be staying there. I have just received a briefing from Imperial Command - regarding Kilik attacks within the Northern Reaches. I will be taking a shuttle back into Imperial space - and I will be taking my squadron as an escort there.” Her eyes narrowed. “Unless you mean to tell me that three troopers will make the difference in holding this outpost through evacuations?”

The Imperial cleared his throat, blinking a few times as he stared back at Vahliri. Even Tazlen would see the faint irritation on the Imperial’s face as the half-Annfyn attempted to declare her directive. While none said so openly, there were plenty of Imperials that weren’t satisfied serving with the Sith able to unilaterally make decisions. “Ma’am, I cannot allow you to do that. My orders–”

“Are what I just gave you,” Vahliri’s voice cut through chillingly.

The Imperial glanced back at the group before he finally sighed through his nostrils. Before he could speak, however, the sound of additional commotion could be heard further into the base - screams of soldiers and the sound of blasters going off. Alarms began to blare, flashing their red lights along signs and buildings.

“A wave of Kilik’s inbound! All troopers to the South Gate!” Even the Imperial who had come to greet Vahliri turned on his heel, immediately making a break for the south gate. Vahliri gritted her teeth, glancing towards the chaos and then back to the group. With the distraction, the Resistance fighters could easily ditch onto a shuttle and escape in the chaos - even if the half-Annfyn knew she couldn’t. There was a large part of her that was convinced they would ditch at the nearest opportunity, and she didn’t attempt to stop them.

They had an opportunity out, if they so chose.

“Cool, let’s get out while we can,” Nails said flatly. She began to gesture for the others to follow.

“You guys go ahead,” Tazlen said as he looked back at Vahliri.

“No,” Nails cut in before he could say anything else, “Don’t pull that self sacrificing Jedi bullshit on me. You don’t even have a usable arm.”

Tazlen shrugged vaguely, flashing her a grin, “But I am a Jedi,” He jutted his chin back towards Vahliri, “My self sacrificing bullshit bothers her too. She just won’t admit it.”

“I’m not going anywhere without Taz,” Tank declared. Though he stole a few glances at Vahliri. Clearly someone developed a crush.

“I don’t fuckin’ believe this,” Nails said with a groan.

Tazlen looked back at Vahliri with a smile, “Looks like we’re here to help you with your pest problem.”

He motioned for her to lead the way to the South Gate. On the path, Tank and the others had a chance to pick up new weapons. Even Nails stopped to admire a particularly nice rifle she managed to scoop up on the way out. In order to be effective, they had to ensure that no one left the base and that they killed as many, if not all, of the Killik before they could breach.

Vahliri didn’t have to guess that Tazlen and the others planned to ditch her to the invading Kilik’s. It was the obvious course of action, without so much as a shadow of a doubt. Quite frankly, the half-Annfyn couldn’t really argue that she wouldn’t have done exactly that, had the roles been reversed. Up until that point, they needed each other to survive, and now that they’d reached the Imperial base.. They simply didn’t, anymore.

The half-Annfyn had already started taking a few steps towards the Southern Gate - fluted ears flattened against the sides of her skull - before she picked up on the bits of conversation between Tazlen and the others. She couldn’t help but glance back - amber eyes widened a bit as she blinked. Her gaze flicked between Tazlen, Nails and Tank - and she couldn’t help the smallest bit of a smile that creased her lips before she rolled her eyes a bit. There was no small part of the half-Annfyn that found the Jedi’s self-sacrifice utterly insufferable. But there was also a small part - one that she would sooner die than admit - that felt the faintest bits of glee upon seeing the group not abandon her.

In any other scenario, the half-Annfyn knew she wouldn’t hesitate to put her duties to the Empire first. She knew they would do the same. But for the moment, they were on the same team - and Vahliri was going to treat them just as she would any Imperials or fellow Sith. “Glad to hear it.”

As they walked, Vahliri couldn’t help but flash Tank a dimpled grin - jabbing him with her elbow as they strolled towards the Southern gate and the equipment tables. “Never doubted you for a second, big guy.” She said before glancing back ahead. She would already see smoke rising on the horizon, while Imperial troopers rushed towards the gates. While Nails nabbed herself a new rifle and Tank armored himself, Vahliri cut in front of Tazlen - subtly unclipping her shoto and passing the red-bladed saber to the Jedi.

“I’ll want that back,” She said with a tilt of her head. It was suicide for Tazlen to use his own saber in the incoming fight, and Vahliri wanted the Jedi knight on the front lines with her for the coming battle.

It didn’t take long for Vahliri to reach the gates after that, ascending to the top of the fortifications. In the distance, they could already see the Kilik host approaching - a mixture of Kiliks, Joined and flyers moving in tight formation. Her amber gaze swept the enemy host before she towards an Imperial captain beside her. “Have the spaceport bay doors sealed until the battle is over. There will be no special treatment for officers - and I won’t have anyone attempting to desert when shit hits the fan.”

Her gaze promptly flicked to Tazlen. “You and I will be on the front lines.”
