Federal District, Coruscant—In a stunning move that has upset the political fabric of the New Republic, Senator Jin Vaisra of Fondor, has successfully ousted Supreme Chancellor Eder Owusaan after calling for a vote-of-no-confidence in his leadership. The senator, among other allegations, named the Chancellor's inaction towards Sith invasions near Free Worlds Alliance territory, failure to rollout a successful AMS vaccination plan, and the stagnation of the New Republic's economy as reasons for the vote.
The Chancellor responded to these allegations by saying, in part, that the senators who voted to remove him were seeking to "line their own pockets" by shifting the New Republic into a wartime economy. Despite his plea, Chancellor Owusaan was voted from his office, sparking a quick selection for a new Chancellor.
Keen to keep his name in the headlines, Senator Vaisra made another stunning move in nominating the freshman senator from Balmorra as Owusaan's successor; and, though Senator Emil Ro appeared shocked by the nomination, he quickly recovered and accepted, which was followed by a vote that would end in confirmation of his leadership.
Following the swift election, the new Chancellor offered a triumphant speech before the Senate, vowing in part to keep the Republic unified and strong.
Both the vote-of-no-confidence and the quick selection of Owusaan's successor are the culmination of months of rumors both within the New Republic government and without that confidence in the former Chancellor's leadership was slipping. Recently, when responding to comments made by Senator Sutton Rayne (NR-Commenor), President Emryc Thorne of the Independent Systems Consortium, was particularly vocal in criticizing the New Republic's vaccination plans, which no doubt furthered resentment for Owusaan's leadership.
Notably, Senator Rayne was absent for the vote on the Chancellor's removal and subsequent replacement. She was joined in this by Senators Raz Chak of Cardia and Eumi Redrish of Kuat, both of whom abstained.
None of their offices could be reached for a comment.
