"Owusaan Out as Supreme Chancellor of the New Republic"

by Meetra Zenik

Federal District, Coruscant—In a stunning move that has upset the political fabric of the New Republic, Senator Jin Vaisra of Fondor, has successfully ousted Supreme Chancellor Eder Owusaan after calling for a vote-of-no-confidence in his leadership. The senator, among other allegations, named the Chancellor's inaction towards Sith invasions near Free Worlds Alliance territory, failure to rollout a successful AMS vaccination plan, and the stagnation of the New Republic's economy as reasons for the vote.

The Chancellor responded to these allegations by saying, in part, that the senators who voted to remove him were seeking to "line their own pockets" by shifting the New Republic into a wartime economy. Despite his plea, Chancellor Owusaan was voted from his office, sparking a quick selection for a new Chancellor.

Keen to keep his name in the headlines, Senator Vaisra made another stunning move in nominating the freshman senator from Balmorra as Owusaan's successor; and, though Senator Emil Ro appeared shocked by the nomination, he quickly recovered and accepted, which was followed by a vote that would end in confirmation of his leadership.

Following the swift election, the new Chancellor offered a triumphant speech before the Senate, vowing in part to keep the Republic unified and strong.

Both the vote-of-no-confidence and the quick selection of Owusaan's successor are the culmination of months of rumors both within the New Republic government and without that confidence in the former Chancellor's leadership was slipping. Recently, when responding to comments made by Senator Sutton Rayne (NR-Commenor), President Emryc Thorne of the Independent Systems Consortium, was particularly vocal in criticizing the New Republic's vaccination plans, which no doubt furthered resentment for Owusaan's leadership.

Notably, Senator Rayne was absent for the vote on the Chancellor's removal and subsequent replacement. She was joined in this by Senators Raz Chak of Cardia and Eumi Redrish of Kuat, both of whom abstained.

None of their offices could be reached for a comment.

A series of comlink beeps erupted in the middle of the night - the timezone far later in the Outer Rim than where the broadcasts or articles were posted. Emryc groggily rubbed his eyes and peeled himself out of the grasp of the sleeping Sith Councilor (@Mr. Teatime) next to him. The half Sephi moved to sit on the edge of the bed, adorned in nothing but a pair of boxer briefs.

Emryc pulled up his datapad to read the article, the soft glow lighting up his face. He saw the mention of his own name in the article as a catalyst, a faint grin gracing his face. The half Sephi reached over and popped a cigarra between his lips, using the Force to ignite the end of it. The absence of the more vocal Republic Senators caught his eye. He stared at the name of the new Chancellor, vaguely recalling the man on Indupar. Had his ascension caused a fissure? Why were so many Senators absent?

The half Sephi felt Morgan shift slightly behind him. Emryc reached a hand back to brush against the man’s cheek, “Go back to sleep, baby,” He turned back and stood from the bed. Emryc left the room and walked out onto the balcony. Leaning against the railing, he blew out a cloud of smoke while making a few calls. The first was his PR campaign to investigate this curious absence.

The second was to his aide, “Yeah,” He said after a moment, “I want to meet the fucker and congratulate him in person. Coordinate our schedules.”

Emryc switched off the comm and gazed out at the skyline across from him. The winds brushed against his bare skin as he quietly smoked.

“Welcome to the big boys league, Emil Ro.”

“Councilor Voran! Councilor Voran!” The high-pitched voice squeaked through the calm of Yavin. Alex slowly floated to the ground, unfolding her legs as she opened her eyes. The peace of the meditation field irreparably disturbed. Her mind released the Force, a weary hand rubbing her eyes. “Alayna, I’ve been here for fifteen minutes.” Fifteen minuets of peace gone in an instant. She shook her head to better focus on the young Jedi Knight. The concern in Alayna’s face rang through the Force. Oh no. Alex’s eyes sharpened, her thoughts immediately in focus. “Tell me.” Her administrative assistance rushed forward to hand over the datapad. Words spilling from her mouth.

“The Chancellor has been removed through a vote of no confidence. They’ve already elected a replacement.” She kept flipping through the datapad. Emil Ro…a freshman senator? Leading the Republic? Suddenly, the weight of the mountain on her back grew heavier. Weariness shoved deep into her bones. Alex suppressed the sigh. Chaos. This was all chaos. She relinquished the datapad to Alayna.

“I need a meeting with Chancellor Ro, as soon as possible.” The Force twitched in the back of her mind. The future piecing itself together before her. “Quickly, please.” Alayna nodded. “Yes, Master.” The young Jedi went scurrying off to contact the office of the knew Supreme Chancellor. Alex rocked back on her heals, a hand running through her hair. Everything was changing. How could she keep the Order stable…safe? She could only hope the Chancellor Ro was prepared for what was to come.

The Office of the Supreme Chancellor was easily the most ornate room on the whole of Coruscant. Emil was told it had been faithfully restored to the way it looked before then-Chancellor Palpatine reorganized the Old Republic into the first Galactic Empire. He marveled at the saucer-shaped lamps, running his fingers over their smooth surfaces as he passed, until he arrived at a pristine desk, carved from obsidian.

His desk, now, he had to remind himself.

My desk.

"Apologies for the intrusion, Chancellor," Joost said, emerging from one of the corners of the room like a shadow unfolding from the wall. "There are a few items that require your attention."

"Joost, some day you must tell me how you manage to time your arrivals to interrupt important moments of reflection," Emil said.

"I wasn't aware you were capable of reflection, sir."

Emil smiled. "You will find I am capable of a great many things. What is it you've got for me?"

"President Thorne's office contacted you about coordinating your schedules for a meeting. We've also been contacted by a Jedi Master. Voran—have you heard of her?"

He had. Emil liked to give the image that he was a whimsical playboy, too out of his depth for the job he'd been elected to do, but he did his homework. He knew the names of every member of the Jedi Council, loathed though their Order was throughout the galaxy, just as he knew the names of important politicians within the Galactic Senate.

"Set up meetings with the both of them at their earliest convenience. Keep the meeting with the Jedi off my public agenda for now. Let the press speculate if they must, but deny them any confirmations until we know what the Jedi want. And extend President Thorne my warmest thanks for his invitation. Let him know I am very much looking forward to meeting him."

"At once, sir."

"And, one more thing?"

"Sir?"

"Lodge a request with Senator Jin Vaisra's office for a meeting. It's time he and I had a chat."

Joost bowed without saying a word and left. It was the good thing about having men like Joost working for him. There was rarely any small talk. They got to the point, got their shots in, and then disappeared to do as he asked when he was done with them. If only everything could be so simple.

With Joost gone, he circled the desk, slumped down into his chair, and set to work on his first day as the new Supreme Chancellor.

There are places in the galaxy where rulers aren't chosen. Even some of the wealthiest worlds in known space were lead by those who simply inherited titles, or took power through force of arms. To be able to choose who claimed to lead you was something that a lot of people couldn't claim was the case. Such a claim couldn't be applicable for the supreme chancellor of the republilc.

Laeonas grunted as he completed the last pull up in his current set. He'd been idly listening to the background noise coming from the holo screen; talk about trade deals, the spread of AMS, the militarization of the ISC. He didn't understand all of what was being said, but the words were more pleasant noise than the rumbling of his ship. It didn't take him look to pick up on the urgent change in tone from one reporter. Than, it was followed by a chime, and a new voice, with new words.

"Just in, a report from Coruscant about the recent vote of no confidence," a reporter had said. The tone was shifted, and the screen flashed to text from an article. The woman was reading it out aloud, and the scraggly man doing pullups finally began to pay attention. It almost sounded like a story told by a narrator, not a report on true events. Than again, near every story he'd been told as a child had turned out to be true to some capacity. That didn't stop Laeonas from feeling the need to remind himself that he was listening to a news report, and not being tucked to bed.

The report's contents did... confuse him. He had no clue as to how the government worked. The words "Vote of no confidence" meant absolutely nothing to the man, but as he heard it explained, what had happened became obvious; yet, he was just left more confused. Every line, one after the other, left more and more questions for him to ask.

Was the chancellor being forced out of power? How did they actually kick him out? What was to stop him from just choosing to stay? The reporters hadn't stuck to that topic for long though, almost like the answers were obvious. The next sentences were focused on the nomination and appointment of Owusaan's replacement; and the man continued to spiral into confusion.

How did they pick this guy? Why did they accept it? What was to stop someone from taking the position for themselves? Did everyone just operate off of good will, assuming that law would be upheld? The man was tempted to ask how the government had lasted for so long... until he remembered that it hadn't existed ten years ago.

Emil Ro was the new chancellor. The big guy, the boss, the one who called the shots. He'd sit on Coruscant and make decisions, and everyone would listen.

...at least that's how it sounded, based on how the pundits began speculating.

Laeonas would groan, and get back to his workout.
