DESCRIPTION
The Pelta-class frigate is a small capital ship originally manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards for the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Though lightly armed for its size, the Pelta was one of the workhorses of the Republic Navy, serving as a blockade runner, troop transport and medical evacuation ship. After the war, relatively large numbers were acquired by the Alliance to Restore the Republic, serving in many of the same roles they filled during the Republic era.The Pelta is fairly basic as such designs go. 282 meters in length, it has a crew of 900 and can carry up to 200 passengers, plus 275 tons of cargo and consumables sufficient for 5 months in space. The ship is armed with 2 dual light turbolaser turrets, as well as 3 triple light laser turrets for point defense. Though not originally designed to carry small craft, refits by Rebel engineers during the Galactic Civil War mean that most surviving Peltas are equipped with a small internal hangar, with sufficient space for 8 starfighters.
Notably, the Pelta is equipped with a scaled-up version of the "strike foil" system used by some starfighters and other light spacecraft. The ship has two hinged outriggers which contain engines; they are deployed in flight for extra thrust, and can be retracted during landing or docking maneuvers to enable the large ship to put down in surprisingly tight spaces. This makes the Pelta ideal for supporting insurgencies, being able to land and take off from undeveloped, out-of-the-way places.
In the present day, Pelta-class frigates are fairly scarce, owing to their age and the high rate of attrition they faced over the course of 3 major Galactic conflicts. They can still be found in service to various planetary and sector governments, as well as with various mercenary outfits and criminals.
