To be fair, we require hard stats for everything else.
Like what? Hard stats will just make everything like an RPG. For a free form RP that’s never required. We don’t need game mechanics to write.

How many items you can start with, how many threads you need to get a specific tier of item, minimum and maximum ranges for weapons, the average time per post, the average distance traveled by Force Speed, and many more. All laid down in rulings for game balance reasons.

We don't need mechanics to write, but there does seem to be an understanding that PvPers need game mechanics to lose.

Ahh, like that. Yeah, we do need some stats there. I was thinking character stats like ability scores in the context of the point the other person raised. But sure, guess that technically counts. But character stats Ishtar regards to abilities is still different.

Not sure what you mean by the second part of your comment through.

We only have those rules, and others like "no capital ship bombardments" because it would impact player fights. There's not really a narrative reason why a gun can't shoot 1000 meters, or why you couldn't bombard a battlefield to kill the Sith Emperor, but it's done to balance the "game" of pvp combat.

There's not a gigantic difference between having an enforced limit on weapon stats or forbidding certain kinds of technology from use in fights and having an enforced limit o stats (or rating characters on their strengths). They occur for the same reasons, and tech submissions outside the norm involve more scrutiny than character approvals.

Personally I like neither.

I stink at pvp, but I much rather see someone win due to a clever strategy or out of the box thinking, or by playing sound and defensive. Instead of, my stats are simply better than yours so I win. While I understand the idea behind it, I think it just makes things too much of a game.

That's why I'm a big fan of flattening any percieved power advantages. If you eliminate levels or rank as a means of gauging character 'power', then every character from faction leader to new player has a character power level that is as weak or as strong as the narrative requires.

Noone should be able to argue 'I can beat you because I'm more powerful than you/of a higher level than you/outrank you' on a writing-focused RP site.

Part of me wants to see something like that, but at the same time I remember all the arguments that started propping up in PvPs. Folks would say "I'm a Sith Lord, you're an acolyte so my push should be stronger than yours" and that was part of why there were some rules added to reflect that. I honestly have no idea what the right solution would be.

(if I had it my way) TBH my answer to the above posed scenario would be that the two actions simply cancel each other out. As far as that fight's concerned, both characters are on equal footing. It's up to the combatants to outwrite their opponents, not argue in the OOC that they should get an instant 'I win' button.
