Biography

Rao Jor was a Zabrak male Jedi whose life played out during the Force Eternal era. Brought up as a foundling with a Mandalorian clan and inducted into the Jedi Order in his early teens in the early days of the resurfacing Sith, Rao Jor's life was destined to be fraught with conflict both external and internal.

Rao Jor was born on an unnamed planet in the Outer Rim. Together with his ten years older sister, Ramail, he survived the onslaught of war that razed their village, rescued by Mandalorian mercenaries as he lay (only an infant) in his sister's arms. Certain that their parents had perished, the Mandalorians brought the siblings with them back to their clan, where they were brought up as foundlings. Whilst Ramail would be able to remember her years outside of the Mandalorian Clan for the rest of her life, Rao Jor was too young to have memories thereof. He only ever knew the Mandalorian way of life. However, of the two of them, Rao Jor was the most troubled, and he never fully committed to the tenets of the Mandalorians.

He wasn't aware of his Force-sensitivity until he was old enough to accompany Ramail on travels outside of the abandoned mining colony in the asteroid belt near Bimmiel that Clan Lone used as a headquarters. Rifling his hands through fields of tall grasses, listening to the rustling of forest foliage or the breaking of ocean waves on distant planets, his attunement to the Force that gave life to everything was made apparent to him, although he was still unable to properly interpret it. He was, however, intrigued by it, so he started investigating it and feeling into it whenever he had the chance to do so, away from the prying eyes of his Clan. Having grown up with the stories of past wars between Mandalorians and Force-users known as the Jedi, Rao Jor eventually deducted that this sensation of his might have something to do with the Force so heavily despised by his fellow Mandalorians. As he entered his teenage years, he grew ever more disillusioned with the Mandalorian way of life, realising that it did - could not - condone the part of him that was attached to the Force.

Eventually, he felt he needed to tell someone. So he confided in his sister. She did not take it well. She told him to suppress it, to never speak to anyone about it, and to forsake this part of him. Rao-Jor felt betrayed. He had not chosen the life of a Mandalorian; it had been put on him by others. In time, he came to realise that he did not have to commit to this life. That he had a choice. So, during a trip with his sister to a system not far from the clan's colony, he made himself lost in the buzzling spaceport, and chartered a flight out of there.

He didn't go to the Jedi immediately. Instead, he wandered the Galaxy for a year, earning just enough credits to get by, sometimes stealing his way on to starships that would carry him further towards the Core. By coincidence, he ran into a Jedi Knight on a spacestation in the Mid Rim who sensed the turmoil within him. It took a lot of convincing, but the Jedi eventually persuaded Rao-Jor to go with him to Coruscant, where he was initiated into the Order.

Having spent two years as an Initiate, learning the basics of the Jedi way of life, Rao Jor is now ready to become a Padawan Learner - if he can find a master. He has never spoken to anyone in the Order about his past with the Mandalorians.

Personality

Rao Jor’s Mandalorian upbringing is very apparent in the way he approaches life. He is disciplined, structured, more likely an early arrival to an event than a latecomer. He is meticulously dressed, his personal hygiene is on point, and his appearance is well-kept. Beating around the bush is not his way of dealing with problems or conflicts with other people; he gives it to people straight if he feels like they have wronged him. Conversely, he is just as straight and honest when he is the one owing an apology to someone else. In these areas, Rao is quite unlike other sentients of his age. The chaos in the everyday practices normally surrounding youths like him is absent; in its place are routines more akin to those of adults that have already established the practical cornerstones upholding their everyday life.

On an internal level, however, Rao Jor (like most youths) has his issues. His relationship with his Force-sensitivity and his affiliation with the Jedi – a culture that has been a rival of the Mandalorians since time immemorial – is naturally quite troubled. He is still not owning and accepting this part of his being fully. Years of indoctrination against Force-users did that to him. He is suppressing a large part of himself, and because of that he carries strong emotions with him, emotions that he does not fully know how to handle yet. There is potential for both light and dark in him, and whether he sticks the Jedi landing or falls will depend on whether he learns to accept and process the things he is suppressing. He is strong-willed and has a tendency to latch on to certain ideas – certain lenses with which to view the universe around him – and hunker down, unwilling to give ground or sue for peace. This part of him is especially strong, not just because of his youthfulness, but also because of the ideologies he has been surrounded by his entire life – first as a member of Clan Lone, then as an Initiate of the Jedi Order.
Skills and Shortcomings
Flyboy: Although he does not know for certain that it's true, Rao Jor is convinced that he has spent more time on board starcraft than with his feet planted on actual terrestrial soil. Growing up as a member of a nomadic clan of Mandalorians, navigating the vacuum of space quickly became second nature to the young Zabrak. His sister - ten years his senior - taught him how to commandeer starfighters and freighters, and he does so with a confidence seldom found in one so young as him. However, his young age still set some boundaries to his abilities - particularly in terms of the variety of spacecraft that he has had the opportunity to fly. Although they all operate by the same principles, there are nonetheless subtle differences between different series and models that gives a pilot who's familiar with them an upper hand.

Able Gunman: It's near impossible to grow up a Mandalorian and not be intimately familiar with a blaster. Rao Jor has fired blaster pistols and rifles since he was old enough to hold their weight in his hands, and being surrounded by professional bounty hunters, mercenaries, and expert marksmen, he definitely knows which way of a blaster is the deadly end.

Close Quarters Combat: Like most other Mandalorians, Rao Jor has been taught how to handle himself in close quarter engagements, particularly in hand-to-hand combat. Had he stayed with his clan, he would have eventually become familiar with a very broad arrangement of martial arts; because of his departure, he knows the basic principles of a system developed by the Mandalorians to be practical, user-friendly, and deadly. It may be just the basics, but it is nonetheless at a skill level that puts him in the upper section of his Padawan peers at hand-to-hand.

What Even Is a Lightsaber?: Rao Jor's rather recent induction into the Jedi Order means that his hands-on experience with lightsabers is minimal. Given that he is a very physical boy and has had a lot of prior combat training, it could have been expected of him that he would have picked up the lightsaber quickly. However, something is blocking Rao Jor's ability to connect with the lightsaber - on both a physical and a spiritual level - and until he has learned how to overcome this block, his lightsaber skills will remain unsatisfactory.

And What Even Is the Force?: By the same reasoning for why Rao Jor's lightsaber skills are... adequate, at best, his connection to and understanding of the mystical energy field known to the Jedi as the Force is far from extensive. While he seems to have a naturally strong attunement to the Force, his worries and doubts - even shame - about being a Jedi throws a spanner in the works for him. He has also only just started his exploration of the Force as a theoretical subject of philosophy. He still has much to learn.

General Knowledge: While Rao Jor is a smart and clever kid, his knowledge of the Galaxy around his, of politics, Galactic history, different cultures and languages is minimal. He was taught what was practical and good to know to be able to survive with his clan. For an aspiring Jedi, that is not enough.
