DESCRIPTION​

The S-161 "Stinger" XL was a model of luxury yacht manufactured by Latero Spaceworks. Built for wealthy executives, the Stinger was fast and elegant, unique among the utilitarian starships more common during the time of the Galactic Empire. It utilized an unusual asymmetrical rotating wing design, with a large stabilizing fin counterbalancing an engine pod. The wing is utilized for both space and atmospheric maneuvering, rotating in the same direction the pilot intends to turn the craft and allowing for surprisingly precise control for such a lengthy ship.

In order to allow a Stinger to land on uneven or crowded areas, such as in a small spaceport, the engine pod is rotated until horizontal while the stabilizing wing continues to rotate until it reaches a vertical position, creating a 90-degree angle. Other landing configurations beyond this default can be used to land in different spaces, although it also has an access hatch on the bottom level for ships that can't otherwise accommodate it.

The ship's engines are a trio of high powered ion drives, two horizontal at the rear of the craft and one outboard engine pod, crafted from Nubian parts. The hyperdrive is likewise of Nubian design and is efficient, reliable, and quiet despite its speed. The propulsion systems are designed with modification and customization in mind and are easily accessible from the engine compartment.

Another unusual feature is the belly mounted cockpit with suspended pilot seats that can be swapped out based on buyer preference. Much of the cockpit floor is replaced with transparisteel for compensate for limited top visibility and offer excellent views of wherever one may be flying. The main deck has a spacious lounge with a sunroof, long couch, low table, auxiliary space and connections along the walls, and a galley and cookery area. Between the lounge and cockpit is a common area with additional seating and a top of the line holodisplay and communications center.

The bottom deck contains maintenance tunnels and cargo space, while the rear of the craft behind the lounge holds the crew and passenger quarters, with the captain's being the largest. All interior design and secondary features such as terrariums, trophy or weapons displays, holoscreens, couch shape and material, floor tiles, and so on can be customized and by the purchaser with price adjustments as needed. It has two boarding ramps on either side, either of which can be opened for use.

The dual laser cannons are located in the bow, above the cockpit. Although the Stinger is lightly armed and its weapons front-mounted, it provides enough stiff discouragement in the hands of a skilled pilot to keep pirates away, especially considering it can only carry light cargo. Instead it relies on running from threats and escaping to lightspeed, with experienced owners using the forward guns to keep things out of its way.

Despite the age of the original design, Latero Spaceworks gets enough orders for new models and refurbishments to continue selling them into the present day. The Stinger's comfort, style, speed, and agility combine into an excellent ship for those who either can't afford or don't want a larger luxury yacht.

Legal. Luxury yachts like the S-161 are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and are not restricted in most systems.

Due to the very high power requirements of the S-161's sublight engines and precision engineering, any aftermarket modification that lowers MGLT doubles that penalty.
