Special Operations and Light Assault Group

Overview

SOLAG is a joint task force created by the union of the Republic Army Rangers and the Naval Special Warfare Unit. Elite in every sense of the word, SOLAG’s operatives -more popularly known as Republic Commandos- are hand-picked from the best soldiers the Army and Navy have to offer. They are highly trained, well armed, and furnished with the best equipment available to the Republic. Their purpose is that of both a quick reaction force and a covert warfare unit; at a moment’s notice, SOLAG operators can be deployed to any theater of battle, from a cloak-and-dagger skirmish in the blizzards of Hoth to a full-scale battle on Denon, all inside a twenty-four hour window.

Purpose

Their purpose is to act as an auxiliary combat force to augment and support the rest of the Republic Military. Primarily, their functions involve reconnaissance, sabotage, covert assaults, and the assassination of key enemy officers. They have, however, been sent on undercover operations to a variety of locales, and have occasionally assisted the Republic Security Force when the RSF has been in need of military assistance, as SOLAG is an irregular military force and thus is not bound by traditional military or civilian, meaning that they can be deployed on Republic soil without the Chancellor’s direct approval.

As SOLAG circumvents much of the red tape bogging down the rest of the military, they are startlingly quick to get into the action, often arriving hours or days before their counterparts. This enables them to serve very admirably in their secondary role as an quick response force, in which they are called upon to defend against surprise attacks, terrorism, rebellion, and any number of other problems that the Army and Navy are simply too slow and clumsy to deal with.

Command Structure
The Command structure of the SOLAG ranks has been shifted more towards focusing on a similar system to Army Ranks to smooth over inter-agency cooperation. The Lowest rank that SOLAG employs is that of corporal with the theory being that even the lowest SOLAG Soldier is able to carry out the role of Corporal with ease.

Officers are seen as the mission leaders who share the same roles as those below them on covert missions, in fact all SOLAG ranks are fighting Soldiers bar a few who work in the administrative side.

However, SOLAG uses the rank system in a loose sense allowing for Sergeants to lead missions over Captains if the mission requires certain expertise, Officers and Non commissioned men all share knowledge, fight together and do not spend all there time making sure there uniform is top notch, they spend it fighting.

Inter-Agency Cooperation

While SOLAG does not typically cooperate with other branches of the Republic on its missions, the Commandos have been known to request specialists to accompany them on missions where SOLAG operatives do not have the experience or training to handle a particular task. With the increasingly threat of Dark Jedi, this has lead SOLAG commanders to have an increased interest in requesting Jedi to accompany Commando teams on their missions, as a little insurance to ensure that the Commandos don't run into something that they are not equipped to handle.

Training

Each SOLAG Operative, regardless of his or her specialization, is required to undergo advanced survival and combat training. The grueling six month long basic training for Commandos ensures that only the best get through, and as the men and women going into basic are already the best, this ensures that each Commando is, simply put, the absolute best of the best.

Following basic training, each Commando goes to AMOS School, or Advanced Military Occupational Specialty School. It is at an AMOS School that the Commando will be forged into the best that they can be. As classrooms are small, training is harsh, and instructors very careful to give their trainees every last bit of information that they can, it is a guarantee that the Operatives exiting the AMOS Schools are almost every bit as skilled as their instructors. Almost.

Equipment

Much of what SOLAG uses is simply upgraded Republic Infantry equipment. However, due to very lax uniform and equipment regulations, Commandos often feel encouraged to ‘build’ their own combat kits that suit them and the mission. As each of these kits is customized to the battle and to the combat style of the Commando using that kit, the SOLAG operatives are far more dangerous than any ordinary soldier or commando. This immense soldier-level equipment flexibility ensures that Commandos are always prepared to finish the fight… And it also ensures that Commandos look far more rag-tag than the rest of the military, earning them a reputation as ‘Rebels’ and ‘Scoundrels’.

Vehicles

SOLAG does not use its own stable of vehicles. Rather, they requisition and customize vehicles and ships from the Navy and Army when they feel the need for one. As such, SOLAG has a constant supply of any vehicle they want - from a Summit-Class Dreadnought to a MD449 Swoop Bike.
