Steph was both excited and nervous. After several grueling months at the Naval Academy today would be her first day in the simulator. While the fact that she would finally get a chance at the simulator excited her, she had received some troubling news. She’d received the name of her instructor in addition to the mission, and the instructor assigned to her had a reputation among the other students for being harsh. One or two individuals had actually dropped out of school because of his criticism. The more she thought about it the more nervous she became.

In an effort to calm down Steph took several deep breaths. Her nerves finally settled Steph reviewed what she knew of the instructor. Supposedly a brilliant tactician he’d been pulled off of active duty after receiving a crippling wound. While recovering he was offered a limited teaching job at the Academy. Ever since accepting the job he’d been an absolute terror on the students. Between changing the sim parameters and even re-writing the entire sim mission outright, he’d earned himself the name “Career Ender”.

Now nervous again Steph stands up and begins pacing around the small ante-chamber next to the simulator. She was supposed to be here for the small fleet command mission, but with him as her instructor she could be assured that she wouldn’t recognize it. Still panicking and pacing Steph doesn’t notice as the door opens.

Admiral Raven was sure to make his presence known by taking one especially heavy step as he passed the doorway. A few steps more and he stopped, his presence was well stated. He was in Naval Uniform, a few bars on his chest along with proper rank pins. To most he was intimidating, he liked that.

"Afternoon, Harrington. I am Admiral Raven."

Behind his back he held a datapad. This was all for the Admiral's benefit as he was unfamiliar with his end of the test. It was a battle over Coruscant, and a simulation of a Hutt attack.

"EEP" With a startled squeak Steph spins to face her instructor. With the genuine article finally in front of her her nervousness increases . "A-a-afternoon Admiral. Stephanie Harrington, here for my first simulator mission, SIR!" Stammering a response she comes to attention and salutes.

Taking another deep breath to settle her nerves she continues in a somewhat steadier voice. "It's a pleasure to meet you sir. I understand that I've been assigned to the Small Capitol Command mission (SC1). When you're ready we can go ahead and enter the simulator and begin my lesson. Sir."

Now at ease, Steph eagerly awaits the response of her new instructor to head into the sim.

"Compose yourself, Harrington. We will begin the simulation shortly. First you need to begin a systems check on your crew."

With that he made an about face and stepped to a panel next to the door and began fiddling with a few controls. Soon after lights around the room rose and a number of junior officers also here for testing entered the room. Quietly they sat and Kieth returned to stand next to the young woman. He waited until she'd finished with the appropriate pre-mission checks.

"I will be here to grade your performance and assist you should you require it...And before I forget your ship will be one of the new Precursor Destroyers with three Fury Interceptors."

OOC: You'll need this

After another deep breath Steph finally grabs hold of her rattled nerves and settles down. "Yes sir, I'll start the checks right now." As she steps into the simulator the lights come on automatically and the simulation begins to start up. As the Destroyer's bridge takes shape she makes her way to the captain's chair and takes her seat.

Flipping the cover of the control unit in the command chair she begins her systems check. "Power check; engines check; weapons check. Ship is ready for action." Having completed her check she turns and faces the clear screen into the adjacent room. "Check is complete sir, ready to begin the mission."

"Good. A pirate space station has been located covertly inside of your operational sector. Your orders are to destroy the station and prevent enemy escape. Confrontation is expected, you may call for reinforcements at any time however success following that will be marked on a pass/fail system. If you expect to attain real assignment in the future such grades are looked down upon."

Red lights about the room came on to signal that they were entering combat operation.

"Alright, Harrington, you are at your staging point and your fighters are docked aboard your ship. You are in control now."

"Understood sir." Turning back to face the "crew" she starts the simulation.

The main viewer flickers on to display the sight of stars streaking by, but soon the normal sight of space appears as the ship exits warp for the beginning of the mission. "Tactical, begin searching for the space station. Release the fighters while their doing that, I want them flanking us as we go in."

Not much time passes until "tactical" turns and reports to her. "Ma'am, the station is 50km straight ahead."

"Understood. Helm, takes us in, make sure the panels are configured for maximum deflection from the front. I want those fighter in close and ready to move at a moments notice. Signal the station, advise them to surrender or be fired upon." As the ship approaches the station Steph settles further into her chair.

the response from the station was a poorly acted 'No' over intercom. A moment later fighters began to flow from the hangar. There were six in all, who split into two groups and moved to flank the ship from either side.

The next bit to know would come from the comms officer if he was any good. Chatter would begin, a distress signal.

Then the big hit would come, a pair of gun batteries began to open fire on the ship, a single shot would hit but most of it's energy would be deflected. All the while it would still be an unnerving first blood of the battle.

After a flat 'no' delivered by the 'pirates' fighters take off from the space station. "Ma'am, we have fighters approaching us. Six in total, they're splitting off into two groups. Designating them groups Bravo 1 and Bravo 2."

"Understood." With the action finally starting Stephanie could feel the adrenaline start to flow. Although only a simulation she knew she must act as if it were real. "Alright, I want our fighters to stay close for now. Have them focus on Bravo 2 and we'll take them down together. I want all auto-cannons to fire at will when the fighters come into range."

As she finishes detailing her plan for the coming engagement the computer controlled communications tech turns to report the distress signal. "Ma'am, we're receiving a distress signal."

"A distress signal? What is.." Just as she was about to inquire about the signal she was interrupted by the firing of the space station's gun batteries. Caught unprepared and flying straight at the station one shot hits her ship and the other narrowly misses one of her fighters, as it moves to form up with its mates.

"Incoming enemy fire, we've received a hit but the paneling deflected most of the force." At the report of a hit on her ship Steph feels a sharp stab of fear.

"Umm, open fire with the forward ion array, target the batteries, and begin evasive maneuver delta." The maneuver is a simple one, the ship would simply move from side to side in a vaguely S shape in order to reduce the accuracy of slower firing weapons. With the interruption now taking up her attention, it would be up to the comm station whether or not she would be reminded of the distress signal.

"Harrington, don't lose your train of thought. The signal." He said sharply to her, but not so loud as to be heard by the rest of the crew.

As this happened, the fighters began to clash with the others, making their first volley as they passed the ship at great speed. These fighters had no intention of playing around, they shot to kill.

As the enemy fighters come in for their first strafing run the Destroyer's auto-cannons open fire. Coming out from the ship's shadow the 3 fighters engage the bogies designated Bravo 2. As the cannons and fighters exchange blows the ion array at the front of the ship fires a powerful beam at one of the gun batteries.

As the fighters fire upon the destroyer it takes multiple hits, most hit the armor but one hits an auto-cannon dead on. "Ma'am! We've received multiple hits, armor is down to 70% and we've lost auto-cannon 7."

"Acknowledged. Ready the ion array for another attack." Hearing the admonishment from her instructor she turns to face the communications officer with a slight blush to her cheeks. "Comm, where's the distress signal coming from? Raise them and let's see who they are."

The comms officer would need to then track the source, which could not be pinpointed from their location(it being well away from the field of battle). However if the comms were smart they would note that the station was transmitting a signal that could be a distress signal, however encoded so as not to be picked up by republic craft.

As the fighters finished their first pass they came back together and then split individually behind the single republic ship, they'd set the dog-fighting location aft of the ship so as to take the least amount of fire.

The powerful Ion Beam fired from the destroyer strikes one of the gun batteries dead on. The turret errupts in flame as the ammo cooks off and the atmosphere escapes into the vacuum of space. The sight of the destroyed gun battery finally settles her battle jitters and she becomes calm. "Ma'am! We've.."

"I see it, good job guns. Bring us around to starboard and engage the remaining fighters with the auto-cannons. Meanwhile, we shall engage the second gun battery with the port-side turbo lasers. Engineering, reconfigure the panels for our new orrientation." Now fully into the simulation Steph is thinking more clearly and quickly.

Having determined the distress signal's origin to be the space station itself, the officer turns to deliver her report. Realizing there can be only one reason for the pirate station to be emitting a distress signal Steph makes a quick decision. "Get those fighters docked ASAP!"

"Ma'am? But that will weaken our defenses."

"It's either have them dock and weaken our defenses or possibly leave them here on their own. We may need to hyper out of here at a moments notice." Having stayed close for the entire engagement it wouldn't take long for the fighters to dock. Stephanie Harrington settles back in her chair and waits for the battle to continue to unfold.

Confused by the abrupt tactic of pulling back by fighters the six enemy fighters descended upon the ship, two of them being obliterated by point defense fire. The four remaining fighters and only remaining defense battery on the station continued to fire, but sensors began to pick up disruptions. It seemed as though something was about to land.

There was a silence where the fighters seemed to vanish and it's support showed itself. A pair of Hai-class Frigates. The two ships stood about sixty kilometers away, just out of the effective range for the combatants.

"Ma'am! Two Hai class frigates have just appeared directly ahead of us." With the appearance of the new combatants Steph had two choices. Deciding on the riskier of the two she begins issuing orders to her command. "Overcharge the Ion Array and prepare to fire on the left most ship. Once we've fired at it we'll head straight for them, passing between them. I want our beam cannons to go to maximum rate of fire when we come into range, I want those frigates CRIPPLED!"

With the reduction in targets the auto cannon fire becomes more deadly to the fighters engaging the ship. Meanwhile the beam cannons continue pounding away at the pirate station's gun battery, trying to knock it out. During the exchange the battery hits the ship another glancing blow. "Armor is down to 55% and the Ion Array has completed overcharging."

"Very well. Guns, you may fire when ready." Having run the targeting calculations since she first proposed firing on the frigates it only took moments to update the parameters on the motionless ship. With a simple press on his keyboard the powerful Ion array releases its energy. As the array fires its control circuits quickly begin to overheat until they finally explode.
