Genius Droid Repair & Mods
Corellian District
Nar Shaddaa

Smoothly, the transport droid hovered around the metal table under the bright light. Splayed across the table was a silvery droid with his protective plates neatly piled to the side. The small Columi rubbed his chin as he examined the inert droid in front of him. Unlike most of the droids in Genius Droid Repair & Mods, this droid possessed a heavier frame with more high-quality parts. Its tightly packaged servos and reinforced musculature was not typical of the usual droids that Zentripoli worked on. This particular one was a prototype, and in many ways, highly illegal across most of the galaxy.

To Zentripoli, he was now involved in a “technological race”. For the Columi who considered all angles, word on the street was that the local dealers of illegal droid parts discovered that he was working on an assassin droid prototype. Whether they heard of the small alien’s ingenuity or they simply wanted another competitor off the board, it did not matter to the small criminal. In the end, he simply knew that he had to get this droid operational and produced to sell in a much smaller timetable. Thus, Zentripoli had been working night after night on the droid. Fortunately, he had just finished putting the last touches on his own combat platfrom—the ZDT-415 Columi Combat Platform. It had been years in the making, designing a vehicle to safely and efficiently transport him and those of his race around the galaxy without drawing too much attention. But lately, it seemed it was not just a side project, but more of a necessity for survival

Stopping briefly to look over to the vehicle, Zentripoli tried to tell the difference in his vehicle and one of the droids the frame was based on. As acute as the Columi’s vision was, he was unable to tell which is which. A small smile crept to the small alien’s face. He thought to himself…

Let the shell game begin…

He shifted his attention back to the transport droid he was sitting atop of, deftly using its heavy manipulators to move the droid’s arm and begin reattaching the limb. While part of the reason for staying late this evening was to get some more work done, the primary reason was to meet Uul-Rha-Shan. The Tiss’Shar was competent and a professional—not to mention possessing quite the intimidation factor, which Zentripoli knew he needed. Regardless, he asked for him to come meet him in the shop for another job. What the small Columi was also considering was to contract the Tiss’Shar full time—this time was more of an “audition” than a real need for a contract.

Looking over to his ZDT-415, Zentripoli’s mind projected to the combat platform. The four cerebellums that the Columi possessed within their brains provided the ability to project and transmit radio waves to droids, sending impulse control, allowing a sort of telepathic manipulation of droids. Fearful of “hacking the radio waves”, Zentripoli attuned his specific frequency to the droids he controlled the most, which allowed for a more precise control of the droid he wished to manipulate. In all cases, the droids were receptive to this sort of manipulation. The droids that this was done to understood that if Zentripoli opted for direct control, it was because he needed their help. Most of the time, the small Columi would ask for permission as a courtesy. In times of emergencies, this was not the case. The small alien would quickly grapple control if it were a matter of survival.

The ZDT-415 began to move, striding confidently over next to the Columi and began splitting apart wires delicately with its manipulators. The precise movements were given by the power of the Columi's mind, which in turn translated to physical precision. A few more adjustments were needed on this prototype while he waited for the droids and the Tiss'shar to arrive.

Zentripoli has spent a lot of time working with the ZDT-415. To the Crymorah Syndicate criminal, he knew that he would need the extra protection when dealing with the uncertainty and shifting alliances of the underworld…

BX-166 approached the Columi mechanic's laboratory, idly humming a bit as he tapped the handle of his blaster that hung from his side. He had been called by his 'doctor', who had improved and reactivated him after more than 150 years of deactivation.
He gently knocked on the door, and then stepped inside. "Hello Doc, how are-" and then fell silent seeing the scene. He didn't want to bother the Columi while he worked, and so he simply approached the alien, observing his work.

It0 set the medpac atop the counter and began the now nightly ritual of restocking its components. Nar Shaada, Nal Hutta’s largest city and It0’s new home, was as vibrant a environment as the medical droid had ever come across. Coruscant’s dark sister, the vertical city of Nar Shaada was home to a host of smugglers, grifters, thieves, outcasts and gangsters. With such denizens, violence and blood were commodities as easily bartered in as anything else. For a 2-1B Surgical Droid working as a “street-doc” for the notorious Crymorah Syndicate, this meant business was both brisk and unpredictable.

Briefly running the analytics of the previous evenings incident specifics, he decided on bringing additional Bactapads. The storeroom was modest yet well stocked. Nestled in an ancillary room off the back of his new owner’s shop, the space was spartan even by droid standards. Neatly arranged shelves and containers of medical equipment lined nearly every perceivable space. The exception being a small workbench upon which the medpac sat. He had been in Zentripoli’s employ for a little more than three standard weeks and had found the diminutive Columi both generous and remarkably intelligent (by organic standards).

Although his primary function was the supervision and administration of medical care to admittedly frail Columi, his new owner had seen fit to outsource It0’s services to members of the Crymorah. This line of work, coupled with the installation of a new Heuristic Processor, had afforded the droid ample opportunity to stretch his newly acquired reasoning capabilities. The presence of ‘opinions’ against a backdrop of metric data and protocols was still a new one, but one he found remarkably fulfilling.

He scanned the medpac’s contents a final time, a checklist ticking past his internal display as he did so.

...stabilizer compound, sonic scalpel, cauterizer…

Once more a rolling wave of reason pulsed through the sea of datapoints. It0 opened a final container and phished out a small hold-out blaster. Tucking it neatly in the medpac’s interior, he draped the equipment over one shoulder and exited the storeroom.

The interior of Genius Droid Repair & Mods was conspicuously quiet. Atmospheric chemical composition analysis identified the presence of rosin-core and burnt plasteel, common byproducts of the soldering involved in droid repair. Zentripoli’s diminutive figure sat perched atop a transport droid, his attention on the prone ZDT-415 on the table. To the Columi’s side, the commando droid BX-166 stood in silent observation. It0’s interactions with the BX unit had been limited up until now, but Zentripoli’s trust in him must have been warranted somehow.

Sir,” he announced as he approached the table, “I have received a communication from one of our associates. An apparent miscommunication over the current market-price of Spice has resulted in some rather grievous injuries. It would appear several pitchers of Phattro and a vibroblade were involved.

His autoreceptors flicked between Zentripoli and BX-166.

If you’ve no further need of me tonight, I’ll begin my rounds.

Hearing BX-166 come in, Zentripoli kept working. The commando droid began to speak, but stopped as he saw Zentripoli was concentrating on the droid in front of him.

Keen attention to the situation and environment. Respect for the need for concentration and associates with a quiet environment. Interesting…and pleasing.

Not even looking up, the small alien answered. His small voice was amplified by small speakers mounted on the transport droid that floated, “Enter 166. Marvelous insight in respecting a professional at work. But you may proceed with you thoughts. As I am Columi, I am able to truly multitask. Other sentients do not possess this capability. In truth, they are simply ‘switch-tasking’, which is an incredible strain on the cerebrum…fortunately, I have four cerebrums, so I do not need to switch task.”

The repulsors hummed softly, maneuvering the small alien to another vantage point on the assassin droid he was working on. He began to explain to BX-166, “This is my newest 4th degree droid I have been working on. If you examine the musculature, much of the design is based on your frame. It is a bit sturdier than your design, but certainly not as agile. Should you wish for any of the newer parts I have used in this model within your own frame, I can make the required replacements…”

The modified salvage droid turned to face 166 and Zentripoli continued, “Pleased you are here. I will require your assistance with some problematic competitors. The probability that they will raid this shop and attempt to end my life is very high due to my threat to their economical sovereignty. I wish to be proactive by interrupting their inevitable course of action with an assault of my own…”

It0 came from his workspace in the back. The medical droid was brought back online by Zentripoli. After infusing the talented droid with a heuristic processor, It0 had been working for the Crymorah Syndicate as a “street doc” of sorts, patching up injured members of the syndicate following any unfortunate engagement. In addition, It0 also served as Zentripoli’s personal doctor. Zentripoli was putting his mind and body through an atypical amount of stress for a Columi. As such, he asked It0 to analyze, catalogue and record his vitals and body changes to see if there were any physiological changes.

The droid came in and spoke to the Columi, giving him an update of his activities. If there was one aspect of a criminal enterprise that would remain constant it was violence…and stupidity. It0 was ready to see to other patients, but Zentripoli knew the status of them and they would not need It0’s services for the next few days. He was just being particularly diligent. There were some unexpected inconsistencies from fitting It0 with a heuristic processor, some subtle shifts in personality, demeanor, and motivation. It was intriguing to observe…

“Actually, It0, if you do not mind, I have need of your assistance this night…”

Looking over to 166, he made the introduction, “BX-166, this It0. Aware that the two have seen one another, but both of you share the same type of heuristic processor, which I find a pleasing modification to you both. 166 is part of Droid Gotra. I encourage such an affiliation for you as well, It0.”

Pause.

“We are waiting on the Tiss’shar known as Uul-Rha-Shan, a contract mercenary. Tonight, I wish to assess the alien’s loyalty, duty, and combat prowess. It is my intent to see if the Tiss’shar will be an adequate addition to my protective retinue. I will ask the two of you to help in assessing this mercenary during our activities this eve. Yes, It0, I am having you escort us in scenarios that will lead to inevitable violence…are the two of you willing to aid me in this endeavor?"

Abandon his appointment with known Crymorah associates? Filtered as it was through transport droid’s speakers, acoustic analysis of Zentripoli’s vocal tone and cadence held sufficient confidence to convince It0 of the truth in his statement. Perhaps the Columi was privy to additional data regarding the comm call he had received or it might be the case that he simply didn’t allot the victims of a backroom brawl adequate priority to justify It0’s presence.

In either case, as the 2-1B’s current owner, his directives took priority.

“Of course sir.” he replied, “At your service.”

Offering a clipped bow towards the BX-Unit, he accessed his databanks entry on the ‘Droid Gotra’ and found the information available disappointingly sparse. A collective of insurgent battle droids with anti-authoritarian sentiments and a droid liberation slant. It0’s own nascent sentience was in its infancy with the recent installation of a Heuristic Processor and as such a firebrand philosophy such as the Droid Gotra’s struck him as utterly alien. Nevertheless, directives were directives.

“A pleasure to make your acquaintance BX-166.” he stated, “I look forward to having an opportunity to parse your memory regarding the Droid Gotra and its various goals.”

He pivoted sharply back towards Zentripoli.

“Sir, my databank entry on Tiss’shar physiology indicate that when considered broadly as a species, they are exceedingly suitable candidates for physical combat. Statistics around physical strength, dexterity, and adrenal levels all return numbers above the cross-species standard.”

166 listened to Zen as he explained the characteristics of the new assassin Droid he was building, and well, the fact that he based it on his model of droid made him happy, in a way. "Well, I'll evaluate the advantages of having these parts put in my chassis Doc." When the medical droid walked in, 166 instinctively went to grab his blaster, but after recognizing him he relaxed. After It0 greeted him, he bowed too. "It0, it's a pleasure to meet you again. And if youll5 need to know more about the Gotra, I'll gladly give you the informations I'm allowed to share." At Zen's mention of a Tiss'shar agent, he seemed thoughtful. He had met a few during his missions in the Clone Wars, but he didn't interact with them much. "I'm more than willing to help you with that mission Doc, just let's hope that the Tiss'shar won't turn its back at the first opportunity" he said with his typically not-so-trusting demeanor towards extraneous organics.

Time passed and Zentripoli finally spoke into his chronometer, "Uul-Rha-Shan, Zentripoli here. I am confident there are extenuating circumstances that are keeping you from our prior arranged meeting. When you are available, I still am in need of your services..."

Zentripoli smirked and looked over at the two droids, "A schedule must be kept. A meeting has been requested in the Duros District at an outdoor cantina. Most do not know what I look like, so we will use that to our advantage. Are we ready to go?"

While waiting for a response, the transport droid hovered over to the ZDT-415. On mental command, the belly of the ZDT-415 began to open, revealing a small cockpit within. Maneuvering over behind the droid "vehicle", the transport droid reached up and gently plucked the Columi from atop its frame with its manipulators and delicately placed the Columi in the cockpit seat of the ZDT-415. Connectors began to attach to the Columi's helmet, amplifying control of the vehicle as the belly slowly reverted back into place.

Now appearing as a ZDT-410 security droid, Zentripoli's voice came out of the droid's vocabulator, but it possessed a more mechanical tone, "Excellent...are we ready to depart?"

166 stepped to the side to leave room to Zen and allow him to get into the droid, and gave a synthetic chuckle. "Well, with this, surely few would think that there's an alien inside that droid" he said, nodding at Zen's question. "Ready to go when you want, Doc. Just a thing, am I needed to use my sniping programming, or you prefer the medium range of my blaster, alongside the vibroblade?"

It0 watched as the diminutive Columi nestled himself into the interior of the security droid’s torso. The failure of the Tiss’sharr to keep their meeting was greatly disappointing as he had been anticipating the insights such close proximity to a live specimen could have provided.

“I am sorry sir, that your contact failed to keep your appointment.” he began, “Though it should be noted that in clinical trials, Tiss’shar physiology has revealed serotonin-depletion in the forebrain as a common trait, often an indicator of behavioral compulsivity. Nar Shaddaa is a city of shiny baubles. I should not be surprised to find him off chasing one.”

As he accessed his memorybanks, his autoreceptors swung towards the shop’s storefront windows and the relentless torrent of traffic churning in the skies beyond. Swaths of headlights swung past, illuminating the store in a chromatic haze so brilliant, it almost appeared vaguely organic in its pulsing illumination. The value of predictive calculations in such a densely chaotic environment were all but nullified, but as It0’s ‘personality’ began to crudely define itself from his core programming, he was identifying satisfaction in the challenge.

“Sir, if I may,” he posited coolly, “the Dorus District is historically identified as one of Nar Shaddaa’s most economically oppressed sectors. Statistics consistently rank it amongst the most criminally active. My combat capabilities may prove inadequate to your cause.”

He turned to address his fellow droid.

“If your combat protocols are in agreement, I would recommend you engage short-range combat programming. The odds of an encounter involving violence in such an environment are statistically high.”

"That. Is why I am coming along." The rumbling engine of bass that was Cestus's voice drowned out the sound of his massive manipulators pulling the door to Zen's laboratory closed. He moved forward then, his bulk and matt bodyshell, made so by the myriad scratches and scorch marks, cast a monstrous shadow across the rooms. At first his gait was slow, ponderous even. Then, upon seeing their reactions to his size, he leaned forward onto his massive arms and brought his photoreceptors to match the height of the other two droids.

He was working for Zen. Zen was an organic. Cestus distrusted them. But he was undecided about Zen. Watching the diminutive creature at work, Cestus wondered if the Columi saw the droids he created and repaired as his children in some way. Not so much like a parent but as a deity of some kind. He dimmed his photoreceptors and nodded at Zen, then at the others. The Droid Gotra were intrinsically linked to the Crymorrah and therefore to Zen. Cestus was sure that they had assigned him with good reason.

Another glance at the two droids made him state the obvious.

"I don't think we've been formally introduced? I am Cestus. Of the Gotra."

In his mechanical voice, the Columi spoke through the ZDT-415, “Sniping protocols would be ideal considering the open space that the meet will be held in. Yes, now that you mention it, a sniper would be perfect for this meeting. Good thinking, 166.”

Looking over at It0, Zentripoli added, “Normally, I would agree with you, but we will have short range support in the form of additional muscle…now in fact.”

The “Barrel” labor droid rumbled over. It was an imposing droid and was only emphasized when its vocabulator rumbled to life. The Columi made the introductions, “BX-166, It0, this is Cestus. Cestus is a ZDT-555 who has recently joined us from the gladiatorial pits. I am quite confident he will be a fine asset to this evening.”

The droid’s head glanced over to It0 and added, “This will be excellent experience for you, It0. Consider this an exercise to aid you when you must deal with unruly patients!”

If he could smile, 166 would be grinning at the moment after what Zen said. Sniping was his speciality. "Alright Doc, I'll go and fetch my ri-" but as Cestus came in so unexpectedly, since 166's back was facing the door the large droid came from, the commando quickly drew his blaster from his hip and turned around, aiming it at Cestus. As the droid mentioned the Gotra, he lowered the blaster, head tilted slightly. "I heard something about a new gladiator Droid joining our ranks, but only now I have the pleasure to meet you" he said, stepping forward after holstering the blaster and offering the massive droid a hand to shake.

"C3-5T. Or Cestus, as the organics dubbed me. I like the irony. That the name they gave me to draw in the credits, will be the name that they learn to run from."

He nodded his apeish head. Taking the offered manipulator. His receptors dulled somewhat as though blinking. He looked at the diminutive droid creator, "of course there are exceptions as with all the races." His barren features somehow conveyed a smile. Maybe it was the angle of the head...he didn't dwell on it, turning back to 166.

"For the Gotra."

The Gotra were apparently more of a presence on Nar Shaddaa than It0 had originally calculated. He flickered his photoreceptors by way of greeting towards the monumental droid and wondered just how deep Cestus’ distaste of sentient life ran.

“Good evening Cestus.” he replied at last, “I am 2-1B serial number ‘IT-721X-00-079-21B’, designation ‘It0’.”

His attention returned to Zentripoli.

“Sir, will there be any more participants in this evening’s tasks?”

The droid that Zentripoli was riding shook its head and it responded, “It will be the four of us. 166, we will meet you at the meeting site. Shall we?”

Mayville’s Outdoor Cantina
Duros District
Nar Shaddaa
There were no places in Nar Shaddaa that were accommodating for sentients with a fear of heights. Mayville’s Outdoor Cantina was a lively spot that utilized a pair of old, large landing pads as its outdoor cantina. A bar sat in the middle of each landing pad with tables scattered throughout both pads. A large blast door remained open that led to the indoor section that had another cantina—which catered to sentients who were not droids. But the outdoor area was lively with droids and sentients alike. This eve was not particularly crowded. There were no podraces to watch or Huttball matches to cheer on, so even though there were plenty of guests, it was not near as crowded as usual.

The trio took the walkway spanning across two towering skyscrapers, leading them to the outdoor cantina. A serving droid greeted them, “Greetings guest. Table for three?”

Zentripoli’s mechanical voice answered, “Actually it will be a table for six.”

In response, the droid replied, “A table for six, follow me please.”

Weaving through the tables and past the bar, the serving droid took them to Landing Pad 1 and a table near the edge. There were no rails, walls, or anything between the landing pad and open air. Zentripoli mentally maneuvered the ZDT-415 to a side chair where he could see guests coming over, but was not pressed against the edge.

The commando droid took place on the edge of one of the skyscrapers that was close to the landing pad where Zen and the other two droids were sitting at. He peered through the binoculars he took at Zen's armory, observing the three droids take place there, and murmured at the communicator that was linked to Zen's droid "Finally you're here guys, it was a hour I was waiting here" he said with a joking tone. "Keep the holocom open so I can hear the conversation doc, I'll keep an eye on the customers too" he added

The route to their meeting wound the group through the congested mania of hover-traffic, into a series of turbolift rides, and across a dizzying catwalk. It0 followed compliantly and without comment. Nar Shaddaa’s urban landscape of dramatic peaks and canyons was endlessly fascinating. Above, a turgid firmament of rust-colored sky was all but concealed by the looming towers above them. Below, a gorge formed from the composite exteriors of structures stretched on into oblivion. All about them, hovercraft traffic ambled and darted like so many massive insects around a sleepless, ceaseless hive.

After the server droid had deposited them at their table, It0 situated himself across from Zentripoli and safely back from the landing pad’s ledge. He had no programming that corresponded to a ‘phobia’ of heights but his survival matrix stipulated he should mitigate risks where applicable. The thrumming pulse of urban-life resounded around them and seemed to reverberate off his very circuitry. There was no clear explanation in his coding or core programming that would account for such an affinity. He was a med-droid, no more and no less. Certainly the Columi droid-specialist had performed certain alterations to his personality matrices when installing his heuristic processor, but repeated diagnostics have revealed no clear genesis for such a ’pull’.

At times, in core sub-processes that It0 himself was hesitant to parse, it felt as though the sprawl was communicating with him…

Zentripoli’s mechanized ‘suit’ crackled with static life as his commlink became active, wrenching the 2-1B from analysis. Barely audible was confirmation that BX-166 was in place and at the ready. Between the combat droid’s surveillance and the massive C3-5T’s presence to his right, the calculations for spatial security set It0 at a relative ease. A lone surgical droid this deep in Hutt Space associating with known criminal types couldn’t be too careful...

Cestus had followed the lead of the other two silently and diligently. His thudding steps nothing more than the steady rhythmic beat to accompany that disembodied, droning voice of the streets that entombed them. He watched as countless thousands busied themselves with banal, numbing tasks. The hundreds of speeders that littered the skies zipping to and fro like bees collecting nectar.

To the hulking machine this was his habitat. Here he might not be the apex predator, not like his beloved Gundark, but perhaps in the detritus of organics he would be something other. As he pondered he almost didn't realise that they'd stopped and came dangerously close to falling over the precipice of blastcrete that was to serve as the theatre for their little production. He stopped, dropping to all fours and stared into oblivion, awaiting the arrival of the cast. His massive manipulators clenching and unclenching in preparation.

There was likely death to come. And death would leave with company.

Mayville’s Outdoor Cantina
Duros District
Nar Shaddaa
A trio of sentients exited the indoor portion of the cantina and waved over the server droid. The server droid pointed to the table that It0, Cestus and Zentripoli were clustered around. The trio consisted of a pair of YD-Series security droids, each with a heavy blaster pistol on their hip and a set of medium armor plates. Leading them was a human female in heavy trooper hunter armor. They came to the table and looked at the droids. The female said with a sneer, “I came to meet one known as Zentripoli, not three droids.”

The ZDT-415’s vocabulator activated and Zentripoli’s voice carried all the characteristics of a droid, “Greetings, Chimmai. We are here on behalf of Zentripoli and the Crymorah Syndicate. My programming compels me to deliver an accurate message to my master. What did you wish to speak on? My master theorizes that the reason for this meeting is the droid parts that are being sold on Nar Shaddaa and it seems to run afoul with your business. Is this correct?”

The woman’s dark eyes flared with intensity as she spoke, “Fine. I will be glad to send a message to the one called Zentripoli and the Five Syndicates. We run the illegal droid parts in the Duros District and the Corellian District. Don’t even think of trying to gain a foothold in that market here. Word has it he has an interest in Combat Bypass Circuits. If you want those, you buy them from us…period. Here, let me emphasize my point…”

With that, the female leveled her wrist gauntlet with a pilot light lit pointing at the group. Both of the YD droids quickly drew their heavy blaster pistols, leveling them at the trio the intent to fire…

The mild-mannered It0 was quite taken aback by the introduction of hostile intent so early into their dinner meeting. Every one of his etiquette protocols found such posturing a blatant breach of standards. The offender was a human female, so he briefly ran the variables through his cross-cultural matrix to determine if in some cultures such traditions were acceptable. Mandalorians had some similarly pugilistic customs, but even by the standards of such a Spartan, war-like race of people such action was well outside societal dictums. His processor input the raw data into its translation algorithm before dumping an output into his internal display where it sat blinking emphatically.

‘DIAGNOSIS: [RUDE]’

These calculations spanned the breadth of a millisecond.
