DESCRIPTION
The Scarab-class starfighter is a model of light combat spacecraft originally manufactured by Haor Chall Engineering, a corporation founded and run by the leaders of the Xi Char cult, whose members regarded the creation of high-precision machinery as an act of religious worship. Developed for use primarily by various corporate clients prior to the Clone Wars, chiefly including the Trade Federation, the Scarab predates later fully automated starfighters such as the Vulture, and was seen as something of a bridge, able to be flown either by an organic pilot or by a droid as necessary.

The Scarab-class starfighter is a small craft, 12 meters in length with a flat, lozenge-shaped fuselage. The design incorporates a proto-strike foil system; when entering combat, the sides of the fuselage are spaced away from the main body on heavy struts, revealing the craft's armament of 4 light laser cannons. Retracting these outriggers allows for improved handling aboard carrier spacecraft, an important consideration given that the ship does not incorporate a hyperdrive system.

Unlike the later Vulture, the Scarab is equipped with a standard cockpit rather than an integrated droid pilot brain. Although this does technically mean it can be flown by an organic pilot, the Vulture lacks many of the creature comforts and safety features common to other fighters. These include the lack of a life support system, requiring organic pilots to wear their own environmental gear, as well as the lack of a standard ejection seat, although this feature has been retrofitted to some examples. Ergonomics are also virtually nonexistent, as comfort was considered unnecessary for the droid pilots who were generally expected to fly the Scarab.

Notably, the Scarab is equipped with a light deflector shield, making it slightly more durable than the subsequent Vulture.

Although widely used by the Trade Federation at one point, the Scarab was replaced by the Vulture at some point prior to the Battle of Naboo. Nevertheless, the type did persist in service long enough to see action as a rear-echelon interceptor during the Clone Wars, in the service of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. After the war, the type saw the same fate as most Separatist war materiel; what was not expended in combat exercises against the Empire's growing military was scrapped for raw materials, or placed in storage. Although nowhere near as common as other Separatist designs, some did last long enough to enter circulation on the black market. Even into the present, they still pop up occasionally.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Scarab-class starfighters are combat-rated spacecraft, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from canon into our site's fanon.
