Mustafaree
BV7iojf.gif
Name: Mustafaree
Biology: The Mustafaree are a sentient metal that can shape shift at will using their natural electromagnetic field that is present from formation. Most choose to take the form of a humanoid, though they always maintain their metallic shade (bluish-silver for males and pewter-grey for females). After maintaining a certain form for long periods of time, it becomes harder and harder to take other forms. While they can change shape, depending on the size and shape they assume, they are more or less intelligent. Humanoid form is a compromise for them; small enough to retain a decent level of intelligence, and physically versatile enough to be useful. They can compress themselves down into smaller forms in order to think more efficiently, or they can expand to be huge and physically powerful, but that makes them fairly mindless.
Breeding: The Mustafaree do not breed by normal reproductive means. It happens naturally through hundreds of years of formation underground.
Strengths: The Mustafaree are not affected by things like hunger, thirst, or exhaustion.
Weaknesses: Extreme heat and unnatural magnetic fields (such as those created by a lightsaber's blade, a blaster's laser fire, or, planets and other celestial bodies with extremely powerful electromagnetic fields) can make it harder for a Mustafaree to maintain a solid form. A Mustafaree can be killed when it's cells are spread to thin for it's consciousness to still exist.
Diet: They consume electrical energy.
Behavior/Temperament: Given that the Mustafaree very rarely leave Mustafar, have very little interaction with the Galaxy as a whole, so their social skills are not that well developed and tend to keep to themselves.
Communication: While the Mustafaree have no audible language, they can speak other languages by vibrating their body at a certain frequency and pattern to form vocal words. The Mustafaree communicate with each other by sending out an electromagnetic pulse to those around it which can cause images, sounds, smells, and emotional feelings in the subject on the receiving end.
Culture: The Mustafaree are a extremely intelligent race, who consider themselves children of the "creator" (this is a word used to describe what the Mustafaree believe, but has no audible name given they speak through message pulses). They are untrusting towards other races, given their history as slaves, and hardly interact with others outside their race.
History: The Mustafaree were once a primitive and dull race, used as slaves by the Mustafarians in their factories. They were tortured by the Mustafarians, and treated as lesser beings. Until one day, when a Mustafarian showed kindness to a group Mustafaree and taught them how to speak so they could communicate better. As a thank you, one Mustafaree sent out a message pulse of happiness, but the Mustafarian, startled by the pulse, pushed the Mustafaree off the nearby canyon edge and into the lava below, killing it. Dying, the Mustafaree sent out a message pulse of pain and suffering to all the others. Outraged, all the Mustafaree rioted and attacked the Mustafarians, driving them away from the factories. The Mustafaree then gathered at the canyon edge, and mourned the lost Mustafaree. Years later, the Mustafaree and the Mustafarians keep away from each other, and there is an uneasy peace between them.
Planet: Mustafar
Technology: They have access to the same technologies as other sentient species do, though they rarely use communication devices, choosing to use their message pulse over such means.
Intent: To offer a new unique species to roleplay as, that has a unique history and biology. To also further the meaning of what it means to be sentient, and the ability for a species to experience emotion and consciousness without a physical or digital brain.

Hey there man!

I'm glad to see that you're taking an interest in the custom species area! I like seeing new species for people to roleplay with. I'm not at all a custom-content mod, but I am a mod here and an experienced member and I just wanna try to give you some pointers so that you can hopefully see your species get approval!

Unfortunately it seems like Sentient Metal is a bit over powered (OP) as it is right now. I'll list a few of their principles that make them OP.
  • Cannot die unless they somehow become liquid (so stabs, shots, etc don't damage them)
  • Cannot feel any pain
  • The ability to communicate interstellarly without any kind of communication devices.
Some other stuff. From a biological and physics front they don't really make sense. It seems like "Sentient Metal" have no organs or anything, but they still somehow are alive? What exactly is hosting their consciousness? They would need a brain for that. Additionally, afaik in Star Wars they can't just create consciousness. They may be able to make Artificial Intelligence, but this still has its limits as opposed to organic consciousness - but it seems like sentient metal here is using organic consciousness.

Additionally, why don't they have their own language? Even if its basic they need a way to communicate, and just telepathically communicating probably isn't going to work. Perhaps instead of a lab experiment you could go with a natural species? While we are carbon based lifeforms, the idea of silicone or even iron based lifeforms isn't completely implausible. It would help one of your other issues, in that just by radiating, mixing with chemicals, and shocking - a lump of metal isn't going to randomly take form or just become alive - as that isn't really how magnetic fields work.

Finally, it would be really cool to see more history and culture for these guys. Even the clones, theoretically all the same person, same mind, same personality, had culture. They had individualness and unique traits. You should really try to expand on that here so you could make something special with them, and even perhaps come up with a name besides "Sentient Metal" that fits their way of life!

Just some suggestions as I know some of the things the mods/admins are looking for in species!

I would suggest that blasters and most other energy weapons would be unusually effective against these creatures; blasters and lasers in canon are charged particle beams, which would definitely have an "unnatural magnetic field," which you state is harmful to them.
My thought is that these creatures would need relatively stable EM conditions in order to survive. Perhaps they don't need to actively ingest energy to survive, but harvest it continuously from natural planetary magnetic fields. However, a planet like Jabiim, for example, with its unstable magnetic field, would be a very hostile environment for them.

I do like that if they spread themselves too thinly, they begin to lose their sentience. I would expand on that. Maybe they can change shape, but depending on the size and shape they assume, they are more or less intelligent. Humanoid form may be a compromise for them; small enough to retain a decent level of intelligence, and physically versatile enough to be useful. Perhaps they could compress themselves down into smaller forms in order to think more efficiently, or they could expand to be huge and physically powerful, but that makes them fairly mindless.

I also agree with @Prudence, too; I don't think they should be artificial in origin, if only because it's fairly cliche. Maybe they originally came from a volcanic, metal-rich world like Mustafar or Nkllon.

Just a few suggestions. Hope they help!

It looks good to me; I would give them a different name, though, as Mustafari and Mustafara are very close to Mustafarian, and so they may get confused.
You did leave the diet section as "none;" I don't think that will be accepted. If they absorb ambient electrical energy, I would include that.
I would also clarify what you mean by other celestial bodies as a weakness, because as it's phrased, it sounds like just being on any planet could hurt them.
Finally, you left the reproduction section unfinished, I assume by accident.

How exactly does metal-based biology work? Unless you're dealing with silicon, which is a metalloid (and would not work for complex life), your only explanations possible would be that they're robots (and thus belong in the tech forum) or the Force gives them life. Making them all Force-powered would make them hilariously OP, more so than they already are.

This MIGHT work if:
-You nix their shapeshifting abilities entirely, nix healing, basically make them metal humans.
-You give them an ASTRONOMICAL weakness.

Personally, I'd rather have a metal man powered by space magic than impossible biochemistry.
