Blowing up fighters?

Well Lorcan wasn't usually the kind of guy to volunteer for a space-based mission but he was exactly the kind of person who would do whatever it took to make sure his first big mission in charge was a success. He had been the one to draw the conclusion that the pirates even had a base of operations like this and he had been the one to bring it to the brass and request back up to make sure they managed to secure it.

Now all he had to do was, you know, not die and not kark it up.

"Alright Thalia we're coming in hot and fast so they won't know we're inbound."

The idea was that they would jump to a position not too far from them but outside of scanner range and then do a quick jump to lightspeed and back in order to get the jump on the enemy fighter screen. Taking a deep breath, Lorcan nodded to his borrowed astromech droid and they were suddenly at lightspeed - before they were suddenly not and Lorcan was almost right on top of the group of eight fighters on patrol.

The good news was that they were surprised.

The bad news was that so was he.

"SHIT!"

Panicking at coming in far closer than expecting, Lorcan cursed loudly and spun his ship, firing a missile as he did so in an token effort to actually attack the enemy while he had the advantage. The missile, more by luck than judgement, exploded and clipped one of the fighters, damaging it so much that the pilot chose to eject rather than stay inside the crippled ship.

Still... surprise attacks were apparently not easy when in space.

When it was asked who knew how to fly ships...and fly with competence, Thalia was the first to jump from her seat with her hand raised in the air like the rookie she was. She couldn't wait to get back into a ship, even if it were not her own, though the one she was given access to was a T-65 PT, an X-wing variant that was able to transport a single passenger. Thalia was used to larger ships and though the instant acceleration of the engines was surprising, Thalia quickly found it to be thrilling.

She wore a flight suit issued by the department and the droid assigned was well-mannered, someone must have uploaded a mama bear programming system since it often gave Thalia reassuring comments as she flew through hyperspace with her partner, Lorcan. She must have made some impression with him as she was assigned, or she was the only one that did not mind going on missions with the blunt instrument of a cop. The coordinates were coming up as the navicomputer chimed as well as her comm as Lorcan signaled for their surprise arrival. The droid beeped and the swirl of stars stilled in the sky, their coordinates basically putting them on top of the fighters.

"Karkin'-!" she yelled, pulling up on the yoke, sharply turning the fighter to come back around for attack on the fighters. They were clearly surprised, scrambling to reform while one already took their exit and ejected from their ship. One down, seven more to go and Thalia ensured there would be even less as she came back around to the fight. Getting behind a pair of pirate fighters, she squeezed the trigger, the cannons fired, striking the fighter. The engines blowing out through the fighter, destroying it and its occupants in the process. The second fighter, startled and still trying to regain his composure over reacted, resulting in damage to its haul.

"Five and a half left..."

Alright so it seemed that Thalia was so kind of ace pilot - who the heck knew about that right? It seemed to him that even Thalia didn't seem to know she was as good as she was because she was cursing over their open channel as though she was just as surprised as the pirates she had just wasted.

He somehow doubted she was as surprised as the ones who exploded into fiery chunks but it was still amusing. Chuckling a little bit, he gripped the controls to his ship tightly and spun into a dive.

"Keep it up Rookie!"
he called out over the comms, "I'm going for a run on the station's cannons so they can't be used against us; cover my six!"

Diving towards the station itself, he fired twice with his ion cannon to loosen the shielding over the cannon before letting a torpedo fly straight into the cannons, blowing them to kingdom come. Spinning away from the station, he grinned as he spun so that one of the ships was in his sights.

He squeezed his trigger, blasting the ship apart.

"Scratch one!"

He praised her luck, Thalia felt it was a bit more than luck, but she could hardly complain given the circumstances. There was a love though for the flight itself, even if it were in a tiny cockpit as compared to her other ships. Lorcan instructed where he was running next and Thalia followed, squeezing the trigger to fire on the pirate ships that were trying to form a lock on Locran. Her firing seemed to distract the fighters as they began to form on her tail; she pulled them away from Lorcan who was successful in his run, but now she was in trouble.

Her ship twisted through space, trying to avoid the pirates who were now heavily firing on her. Alarms started to sound in her ship and her droid tried to overrun systems manual controls, but a squeal from the droid alerted Thalia she was on her own and Lorcan...well, she wasn't sure where he was at the moment. Systems were failing, engines were failing, this ship was clearly not made for a dogfight. Her stomach twisted and she looked for a calm to think clearly and then act. It came in a whisper, the peace followed by the swift ejection from her ship into the vacuum of space.

Instantly her tracking beacon activated as she watched her ship explode in a fireball, the fighters coming around to seek Lorcan and she could hear were her own breaths as uncertain threatened her thoughts into chaos. Thalia closed her eyes, grasping for the calm once more and tightly she held onto it.

Bound to happen.

Luck and skill were very useful but sometimes one of them would either run out or the enemy would be somehow more skilled or just plain luckier. That seemed to have been the case with Thalia and Lorcan had to admit that he was happy to see on his scanners that she had managed to eject in time.

He gripped the controls tighter and dove into the oncoming enemy fighters, laughing a missile as he did so. The missile exploded, blasting two of the four remaining fighters to pieces and causing the other two to break off in large loops to evade his follow up. Luckily for them, he wasn't trying to follow up an attack run.

Instead he let the astromech prep the docking ring as he closed off the cockpit from the rest of the ship, allowing the rest of the ship to depressurize and leaving him without the need for a space suit. Taking the controls, he carefully brought himself around slowly, allowing Thalia's ejected seat to come to a gentle stop within the docking tube.

As soon as she was inside he would close the docking ring off, eject the tube and pump atmo back into the ship so that she wouldn't need her suit either. He flicked a switch, putting the heating of his gunboat up to maximum to help her after being exposed to the chill of the void.

"Heating is on; get to the turret when you can. There's only two left and then we're golden."
He shouted back to her before adding, "... glad you're alright Rook."

Thalia exhaled, the Force stirred within her as she centered herself, trying to not let the existential wait overwhelming her. However, there was a different feeling and Thalia opened her eyes, seeing the gunboat approach. A smile didn't appear though, not until she would get on that ship. She released the harness keeping the seat attached to her being, propelling herself to the docking tube. Her fingers grasped the ledge as she pulled herself inside. The droid seeing her in, shut the door, restoring pressure and air for her to breath naturally.

She heard Lorcan's voice over the comm and she finally grinned, listening to his moment of softness as she tossed her helmet aside. The air was still chilled, but it was different from being on a planet's surface and she was grateful for there being heat. Patting the dome of the droid in appreciation, she headed to the turret, getting settled as she quickly looked everything over.

"Alright..." she whispered watching the the targeting computer light up as the remaining fighters circled backed for their ship. She squeezed the trigger, firing a volley of bolts at the fighter, its partner veering out of the path of the bolts and the fire ball of the previous fighter.

Thalia was alright.

That made a small part of Lorcan rather glad but like hell was he going to speak of it. Maybe under the influence of hard alcohol he would admit his personal relief at finding her alive and alright but right now? Not the chance. The fact that she had shaken herself out of her, understandable, funk and immediately shot down one of the last two fighters remaining was actually pretty damned cool so he wasn't even going to be able to say something suitably sarcastic towards her.

If he wasn't careful she might start thinking he was nice - which would just not be acceptable.

"Missile away!"
he called out to Thalia across the coms, grinning as it exploded, too close to the final fighter for it to be able to evade, "Nailed him. Alright that's the fighter escort done."

He tapped the astromech on the head and the droid began to calculate the jump to hyperspace. They had taken out the fighters but there was no word on the corvette and he didn't want to be here if it did show up at this stage. What he did want to do however was to blind and weaken the station for the breaching attempts that were lined up.

Especially since they were lined up due to the failure of the first attempt. He swore as he read the brief updated report that confirmed most of the first boarding party KIA and one captured.

"Thalia, the scumbags have killed the breaching team bar one, who they've captured. They even decapitated one of our own to wave his head around at us on holocall."
he reported to her grimly, "Second and third breaches will be attempted but lets give them a hand while the hyperdrive is warming up eh? Blast the station. We want to lower their shields, destroy their scanners, sensors and maybe the shield generator itself to make the breaches easier."

She watched the targeting computer, hoping to catch the last fighter, however, Lorcan would take the glory, firing a missile that found its target without delay. Thalia gave a cheer, her fingers curling into a fist of excitement as she jumped up from her seat, climbing out of the turret pit and quickly stepped to the cockpit to give her formal thanks to Lorcan. Her brow narrowed in curiosity as she saw him pause from entering the hyperspace coordinates. She could sense something was wrong, and his report to her confirmed what she had been feeling.

A mission had gone awry. She looked up at the stars and her eyes focused on the crippled station where the Ranger and their team was being held. Thalia nodded, "Alright, lets go, we need to bring everyone home." her focus changed and the thought of thanking him for her rescue was pushed aside for now.

She said, heading back down to the turret, readying weapons and preparing for a boarding.
