DESCRIPTION
In days when Jedi and Sith predominate the galaxy's Force-sensitive communities, Sign Casting has largely gone out of favor by most. It is an older and more arcane method for tapping into the Force from before the understanding of one's will and concentration was fully understood.

Nevertheless, for those Arcanists, Consulars, and near-forgotten sects of Force-wielders who wish to rely on the Force more heavily for their combat, Sign Casting can still be a viable tool in their arsenal.

It is impossible to know which sect discovered the art of gesticulation first, but there is no question that is blazed like wildfire through the ancient and even modern sects. Sith sorcerers were able to conjure more power for the same effort, Nightsisters tapped into abilities they never knew possible, and the Shapers of Kro Var discovered greater ease in bending the elements all with specific gestures and positions.

At its core, Sign Casting involves positioning the hands or fingers in specific patterns in order to more easily conjure and release energies of the Force. Instead of using a kyber crystal to focus energy, the caster was able to use their entire body as the weapon, focusing the Force out of (usually) their hands. The precise shapes varied widely from practitioner to practitioner and could even vary from ability to ability being used.

The greatest value that this provided was that it allowed dedicated casters to use the Force and its abilities with less concentration and less personal drain than those who were not versed in Sign Casting.

It is not, however, without its drawbacks. Sign Casting - for all intents and purposes - cannot be used by those who have not dedicated themselves to delving into the Force itself. Typically indicated by a deep study of magick, sorcery, alchemy, or dedication to the path of the Jedi Consular, the time and effort required to learn to use Sign Casting is typically not favored by your average Force-user.

Additionally, likely the most obvious drawback of Sign Casting is that it requires the free use and positioning of one's hands. It cannot be achieved if one is holding a weapon in the hands and thus is almost exclusively favored by those who intend to use the Force as their primary tool.

INTENT
This is a different take on using the Force for individuals looking to write dedicated casters in PvP. We used to have an explicit rule that free hands made using the Force easier, so this was a way to help flesh out and systematize that a bit. While we still hold somewhat to the increased power/dexterity with the Force with a free hand, this is also an in-world explanation for that being the case for individuals who do not carry weapons.

As mentioned in the rest of the write-up, this is really for those who intend to focus on the Force and should almost exclusively be used by those who specialized in one of the following: Nightsister magick, Sith sorcery/magic, Sith alchemy, or dedicated Jedi Consulars such as Jedi Seers. Put simply: if you're using a lightsaber, you're probably not using Sign Casting.
