SIGNAL TRACER

Affiliation:
Free use.

Manufacturer:
Various.

Type:
Signal tracker.
Power Supply:
Rechargeable power cell.

Sensors:
Holonet signal sensor.

Size:
25cm x 5cm. Wristmounted.

Composition:
High-impact plastoid.

DESCRIPTION
A signal tracer is a typically rectangular device, slightly smaller than a datapad, which is used to trace holonet and communications signals back to their sources. A display allows the user to toggle through signals either on the local holonet or a closed network that the device is linked into. While the device can lock onto civilian signals almost instantly, coded or protected signals will require 2-3 rounds in order to lock on. Once the trace begins, the user of the traced device will be able to see that they are being traced, but not who is tracing them, where they are, or how much the trace has loaded.

Once the device has locked onto a signal, it will take time for the device to track the signal back to the source. Within a single building this trace should only take 1 round, 2 rounds is the source is somewhere in the same city, and 3 rounds for anything on the same planet or low orbit. Trying to trace signals across planetary distances is impossible. And, of course, if the signal is interrupted in any way (the trace is interrupted, the signal is lost, they just unplug the computer) the trace will fail and have to start over again.

LEGALITY
Legal, but suspect. There are legitimate reasons to carry a signal tracer, but not many.

INTENT
To create a tool for slicers, bounty hunters, assassins, and anyone else who needs to electronically track someone.

RESTRICTIONS
None.
