Even as the sun crested over the horizon, there was a notable buzz to New Aldera. The soft glow of city lights and speeders illuminated the white-stone buildings of the capital city, shining like a beacon across the horizon. It was beautiful to behold, and it made it easy to forget the never ending cycle of strife and warfare that had gripped the adopted Alderaanian homeworld in recent years.

With the splintering of the Empire, New Alderaan had once more declared itself neutral from the rest of the Galaxy, refusing to align with any one government while holding democratic elections locally. Even if some within the ISB had proposed methods to prevent secession, the Warmaster had kept his word to the Galaxy - allowing planets to leave the Empire if they collectively chose to do so. That didn’t mean, however, that the ISB had taken their eyes completely off of such planets.

In recent months, New Alderaan had become a hotbed for Imperial deserters - owing to its pacifist ideals and familiarity with Imperial citizens. While most of them were low-level privates and military personnel that the Empire didn’t care to pursue beyond their borders, there was one man in particular that had drawn their attention. Anders Kalico had once been a scientist and followers of the Sith Eternal, continuing his service beneath both Sith Empresses. With the split with the Empire, Anders had disappeared from the Galaxy. In recent months, however, the man had re-appeared - making his presence known on New Alderaan. For reasons classified to both Cipher Eight and Three, Anders was marked as a priority kill target - supposedly in possession of intelligence that made him a threat to Imperial security.

They were given no other details on what the man possessed, but their orders to eliminate him at all costs were not ambiguous.

Cipher Eight had arrived on the planet a few days prior to their mission date - slipping into his usual routine when adopting a new identity. As casually as could be, the Agent made his rounds to gain a layout of New Aldera, picking up some basic gig-work. He’d become a regular face at the local caf-house - all in an effort to sell his identity and play down any suspicion of his arrival. When their rendezvous date arrived, however, Eight began to make his way towards the agreed upon location.

He was dressed casually for the day - sporting a pair of dress pants, shoes and button-down shirt. From his neck hung a stylish chain necklace, coupled with a chrono on his wrist and sunglasses. His outfit was complete with neatly styled hair and the scent of cologne filling the air around him. While there were some more rugged types amongst the ISB, Eight prided himself on a crisp and refined getup.

He casually strolled down an alley off the main drag of New Aldera, turning a few corners and moving out of the bustling crowds. It didn’t take him long to stumble upon a small townhouse that had been acquired and cleaned by ISB for their usage - slipping inside with a passcode entered into the front door panel. Eight knew that his partner would be arriving before long, if the fellow Cipher wasn’t there already. He glanced around, taking in a breath.
“Definitely beats most ISB hideouts,” He said aloud.

While Eight may have arrived weeks in advance to secure a cover, C3 was non-official cover on this operation. He'd lived off the funds provided by the Bureau, he'd stayed out of a small, cheap hotel, and he had spent all of his time scouting the area and being generally unnoticed by most people.

With his pistol and knife stashed under his jacket, he arrived in a casual outfit to blend into pretty much any setting. He punched in his entrance code and already noted the arrival of his partner from the shoe prints on the front porch.

His suspicions were confirmed when he heard the man call out that it was an improved site compared to the usual.

I've been in worse, he agreed, rounding the corner to spot Eight. He stuck out his hand to the other man. Three, he said, shaking hands and moving over to the far side of the kitchen, bending under the counter to pull free one of the folders with information about their target.

He placed it down onto the table and started looking through it. You get anything useful out of your recon? he asked, not looking up from the file on the table.

Fortunately, Eight didn’t have to wait long for his partner to arrive. The agent had quickly glanced over their assigned safehouse - checking the nearby rooms and checking the locks on any windows. It was easy to assume that ISB had already bugged the building and were listening in live, a fact that Eight kept in the back of his mind at all times. One rarely wanted to speak out of line or make a questionable statement when Command was listening.

For all their skill, Cipher’s were easily replaced if they became a liability or otherwise problematic.

He heard the door code being entered, and immediately knew that it was his partner arriving. No one else had access, and it took away the mystery before Three even stepped into the room. Instead of glancing in that direction, the agent instead turned his attention to the tile countertop in the kitchen.

Moving a bowl of fruit out of the way, Eight used a butter knife to knock away some of the loose grout between tiles. He then pried upwards, revealing a square of the counter that had been cut and hid a small compartment within the countertop. Within it was the weapons and gadgets they’d been assigned - complete with Eight’s usual Nightstinger, cuff fusion cutters, vibroblade and dart launcher that tucked discreetly into his sleeve.

“Agamar was worse,” Eight said in response, tucking his weapons into place and out of sight. He didn’t mention the details - but the general description of the planet would probably be enough for Three to just agree on that limited information.

He extended a hand, giving his partner a shake. “Three,” He said. “Pleasure to meet you.” The agent couldn’t help but note the way that button-down fit over his partners biceps and impressive physique, though he said nothing on the topic. Instead, he followed the agent back to the table - glancing down at the file that was placed.

“I’ve narrowed down employment records from a few months ago to a warehouse in the eastern district, trading in ship parts for the Royal Engineers Corp. And I know where he gets his every-other-day coffee from the friendly conversations I have with the barista,” He took in a breath.

“Other than that? Not really.” The agent shrugged. “I’ve yet to pinpoint a residence, and haven’t been able to locate him in personal regardless of my stake-outs.”

Eight paused for a moment. “My guess is that he is using public drivers to move around the city - keep his visible footprint small. Wherever he is living, his name either isn’t listed on public tax records.. Or he isn’t using his actual name. Which is equally likely.”

Hm, never been, he replied in response to the Agamar comment. C3 had been around a lot of different places over his career, and someday Agamar may well be one of them. He'd take Eight's word on it for now, though, and maybe avoid it if he had other options.

Retrieving his own regular gear, he stashed his blaster and knife under his jacket and went to work on the remnant of their recon and planning.

A distrustful one, isn't he? Doesn't he know that makes our job harder, he scoffed.

Then we get the drivers. Track back to where they're keeping vehicles and either interrogate drivers or download GPS routes to get his residence, he said. It occurred to him that he had no idea what C8's style was. Was he a trigger puller, a talker, a tech guy, or something else entirely? He figured before they came up with a "next step" that was probably a question he needed an answer to.

What's your MO on operations? he asked, knowing the man would know precisely what he was asking. Everyone in their business had a preference and while C3 was no exception, he also liked to fancy himself as relatively adaptable.
