The Sith, also known as Sith Purebloods, were a species of red-skinned humanoids native to Korriban. They were known for their distinct facial bone spurs, tendrils, and sharply ridged cheeks and jaws. The Sith had a genetic predisposition towards the dark side of the Force.

Following the arrival of the human exiles on Korriban, interbreeding and genetic manipulation muddied the purity of the species over several generations, gradually becoming a hybridisation between Sith and human heritage. Pureblood Sith became a symbol of prestige and pride among the Sith, with the term "Sith Pureblood" referring to Sith that had a higher purity of Sith blood than human blood.

Biology and appearance

69b5fba902fa3e49eb9b487e0a9fbc69.jpg
Sith Purebloods characteristically had skin colours consisting of hues of red, although infants of the species were typically lighter skinned. However, although the most typical colour was red, some members were noted to have shades closer to pink in their adulthood. Sith Purebloods also had sharp, fierce, predatory profiles, including bone spurs protruding underneath their skin. Facial tendrils hung down from their high cheekbones, and Sith often had cranial horns. Pureblood Sith also had pointed teeth and glowing eyes covered by cartilaginous eyebrow-stalks. Most Sith had three clawed digits on each hand and three toes on each foot, two facing forward and one facing backwards.

The facial tendrils on the Sith's cheeks could display different expressions among their species through movement. Slight curling of the tendrils showed a renewed attitude while stroking one was an expression of contemplation. Quivering tendrils were a sign of anger or an inquisitive expression when portrayed with the raising of the stalks on their eyebrows.

Hybridisation

Following the arrival of the human exiles, interbreeding became a common occurrence. Crossbreeding gradually bred out superstition, loyalty, and sympathy in the following generations as the two groups intermingled, and qualities such as cunning, ambition, and affinity to the Force overpowered them, shaping the Sith over the centuries. As time progressed, pure-blooded Sith slowly became less prominent, resulting in significantly fewer left one generation after the other.

The interbreeding determined the characteristics shown depending on how much human or Sith blood an individual possessed. Half-breed Sith gradually became increasingly common to have four or five digits on their hands and feet or have a notable absence of bone spurs, eyebrow stalks, or facial tendrils. Some hybrids showed an even higher dilution of Sith characteristics, such as only having red skin, unusually pink skin, or glowing eyes.

To qualify as a Pureblood, a Sith was required to have retained enough traits shared with the original species to have a visually distinct appearance. Elderly Purebloods showed signs of ageing through their skin, developing deep wrinkles, paling, withered tendrils, and mottling with dark brown age spots.

Dark side predisposition

The Sith had a natural symbiotic relationship with the dark side. They fed on it and empowered it, developing and perfecting techniques of the dark side through it that were believed to be impossible, such as sorcery.

Some considered their propensity for the dark side an evolutionary trait from their origin and extensive time spent living on Korriban, a world containing immense dark side power. The integration of the Dark Jedi arriving and settling on the planet with them springboarded this natural affinity, propelling it to new heights no other race possessed. Every Sith, regardless of blood purity, retained this natural affinity for harnessing and utilising the dark side.

Genetics and reproduction

The Sith were mammalian, making them viviparous and requiring both the presence of a male and female to reproduce by meiosis. Female Sith carried their children to term in 9 months and commonly only conceived one to two young at a time, although upwards of 3 or 4 was possible.

Living on the arid world of Korriban, female Sith evolved the ability to delay or postpone their pregnancy by several months during times of inclement draught. This technique was often utilised to lower the consumption of supplies during such times, sustaining their child's life with the Force. As a result, although the Force supported the infant's life, it could not grow and develop. Female Sith could only utilise this temporary suspension for a few months before risking the child's life.

Sith were capable of interbreeding with more than just humans. Still, their capacity to carry the races of other young was limited mainly to species with remarkably similar biology. Sith could interbreed with other near-human races, such as Zabrak and Twi'lek. However, successful breeding with more alien species, such as Nautolans, was nearly impossible and seldom resulted in a successful conception.

Behaviour and temperament

All Sith were predominantly aggressive and predatory. They were known for being impulsive and bold but could be more calculating and stealthy. Known for their quick wit, sharp tongues, and quick tempers—both good and bad—they made decisions with resolve and determination. Sith had solid wills and an even stronger sense of self-interest, making them loyal to those they cared for but liable to put themselves before others at times.

Sith were also known for being charismatic, intimidating, and authoritative.

It was common for Sith to exploit the weaknesses of anyone, including family, to strengthen their position in Sith society. However, the Sith did not see this as cruel or ruthless and instead viewed it as an aspect of their nature to strengthen their species.

Society and culture

Although the Sith were in an almost perpetual war, their civilisation was considerably sophisticated. For the Sith, their actions were not cruel or vicious but simply an aspect of their existence and identity. They supposedly practised acts such as sentient sacrifices in the name of their gods and developed an intensely xenophobic society.

Alchemy

"But ask me the secrets of Sith alchemy, and I would ask you for three measures of blood: one from a person you love, one from a person you hate, and one from yourself."

The Sith used alchemy for a variety of reasons. One of its primary applications was augmenting the power and lethality of weapons and armour, twisting them with dark enchantments. However, Sith alchemy extended beyond weaponry. Its practitioners could delve into genetic manipulation, enhancing alien species to suit their nefarious desires and make them more subservient to their Sith masters.

Sith alchemy could also summon the dead from their eternal slumber. With chants and rituals, Sith could reanimate corpses into mindless, subservient armies without comprehension of fear. These twisted abominations teetered on the line between life and death, tormented by the forces that granted them their grotesque semblance of existence.

Texts written by prominent Sith figures outlined the processes of creating virulent poisons and plagues with alchemy, corrupting and ravaging the bodies of those afflicted, leaving them in agony. Another creation of Sith alchemy was the Sith Holocron, holders of forbidden knowledge, ancient rituals, and teachings of the most adept Sith Lords and alchemists.

Sith alchemy was also regularly used in the creation of talismans to focus their concentration and further tap into immense quantities of dark side power. The Sith often utilised such artefacts during long, elaborate rituals and temporarily allowed sorcerers to enhance their capabilities.

Talismans were not the only Force-empowered artefacts the Sith were capable of creating. They discovered that using the Force created ripples that others could sense, leading them to create Force masks to hide this emanation from others.

Caste system

Sith society was hierarchical, utilising a strict, rigid caste system and stratified rank structure to keep its subjects in line. Each caste, separated in its culture for so long, was sometimes considered its own sub-species.

  • Predominantly priests or mystical figures, the Kissai were known to study the nature of the dark side of the Force and were devout practitioners of Sith sorcery and alchemy. The Kissai were known to be similarly as ruthless as their Massassi counterparts but were considered more intelligent, cynical, and observational. They also lacked the raw physical advantages that Massassi possessed.
  • The Massassi were the warrior caste of the Sith. Massassi were frequently taller and more robust than the other Sith castes and, combined with their inherent aggression, made them efficient and vicious fighters and soldiers. However, Massassi were not as intelligent as the additional castes but could be trained well enough to carry out complex battle plans and maintain their equipment, starships, and weaponry. Others needed to earn the loyalty of the Massassi, but once it was, they were unfailing in their obedience.
  • Zuguruk were notable and accomplished engineers responsible for constructing and maintaining Sith technology, such as droids, starships, and tombs.
  • While not considered a dedicated caste, slaves were essential to the Sith's social structure. Slaves could be a myriad of species and their own kind. They were commonly referred to by the scornful epithet of "Grotthu." The Sith slaves, in particular, were a meek, servile sub-species of the lowest in the Sith hierarchy. They were typically used for menial labour or as sentient blood sacrifices, and when a Sith Lord died, their slaves were buried alive alongside their bodies on Korriban.

Diet and food

The Sith had a distinct flavour profile and cuisine style regarding food. Traditional Sith cooking involved little baking or frying their food, with only some steaming and grilling. The primary preferred method of cooking was boiling. Sith cuisine was also prone to being remarkably fresh or very well preserved.

The taste buds of a Sith were not the same as a human's. With humans, when capsicin interacted with specific receptors inside the mouth, spices tricked human nerves into thinking their mouth was on fire. That neural illusion did not occur with the Sith, and as such, they did not experience any of the burning sensations and enjoyed the flavours of spices unhindered.

Something unique about Sith cooking was the incorporation of uncooked dough in their dishes. The dough was usually in the form of spheres or flattened circles. The Sith could decorate the globes with imprints, sprinkled or crushed nuts, or bits of sugar, while the flat circles could function as a wrap.

The Sith were particularly adept at working with meat. However, Sith cooks used not only the flesh but also the bones and organs. There were various styles of cured and preserved meats that would be a delight to any food connoisseur. Aside from being well preserved, Sith also enjoyed their fresh meat. Several dishes used sliced or chunked meat, sometimes drizzled or dipped in sauces made from blood or marrow.

Sith typically preferred their fruits to be dried, often served as snacks or dipped into other sauces. Vegetables were often served pickled, jarred, or fermented.

Technology

Historians often noted the Sith for the construction of complex structures and edifices. Their architects often felt that such buildings were extensions of the personalities of their creators. The resulting construct prevented enemies from properly charting the internal structure of such sanctuaries, providing the Sith a tactical advantage. These same techniques allowed the Sith to create vessels such as the Meditation Sphere, imparted with a level of sentience and the capacity to magnify Force power to heightened levels.

With the assistance of Sith alchemy, the Sith also created the highly coveted Sith Swords. These blades were one of the earliest weapons made by the Sith and were remarkably effective. The swords were treated in such a way that enabled them to withstand any blow, allowing them to combat lightsabers. Their unique construction and creation also meant the Sith could preserve them for thousands of years in pristine condition.

Ancient Sith Lords were also known to make Cortosis-weave Sith Tremor Swords, powerful vibroblade melee weapons.

Primitive ranged weaponry created by the Sith included the Lanvarok, originally a hunting tool. In contrast to weapons, the Sith also crafted alchemically enchanted dark armour, which provided added protection for their wearers and was prepared to meet their users' personal needs.

Language and communication

Adopted as a mystical language, Sith was primarily spoken by the species of the same name on Koriban and Ziost. It was an agglutinative language in which words and phrases consisted of linear sequences of distinct meaningful units. Despite the galactic acceptance and use of Galactic Basic Standard, the Sith language remained used among its people.

Usage

Initially, the Sith language was only spoken by the Sith and was later expanded upon and evolved by the human exiles that arrived.

It was well-preserved in holocrons, temples, and tomes. However, outside of those dark circles, very few scholars knew how to decipher it, and fewer could pronounce its eclectic and complex word structures.

Sith morphemes often consisted of close syllables, making the language brisk and choppy. It was regularly stressed, with every word accented on the first syllable. The Sith language also actively discouraged using vowels in hiatus, and it inset glides when two vowels appeared next to each other.

Written forms

In its original ancient form, the Sith wrote the Sith language in complex hieroglyphs. Sith scribes, desiring to develop less complicated scripts, created two versions: "Common" Sith and "High" Sith.

"Common" Sith was used for mundane, everyday use and communication, while "High" Sith was for ecclesiastical use. A third writing system, Kittât, was eventually developed to create incantation scrolls and other things associated with sorcery.

Massassi warriors also developed their hieroglyphic system, a simplified version of High Sith. The Massassi would carve inscriptions using their writing system on temple walls and obelisks.

History

Early civilisation

In the infancy of the Sith civilisation on Korriban, the Sith led barbaric and hedonistic lives using the dark side of the Force. They had a natural symbiotic relationship with the dark side from the outset, feeding on it, empowering it, developing and perfecting techniques such as sorcery.

The Sith had great power, but they had no unity. They lived in tribal "circles" led by one or more sorcerers responsible for the safety and protection of their people. They were perpetually embroiled in a never-ending war, but they treated this way of life as one on par with peace and serenity. They didn't—or couldn't—differentiate one state from the other, and this, including myriad other barbaric practices, was accepted not as antagonistic or harmful but integral to their lifestyle. They saw these practices as their only way to live.

During this time, the Sith recorded information in scrolls, tomes, and tablets. Those tablets contained dark knowledge, such as writings and illustrations that described the powers of the dark side, alchemy, the construction of Sith weapons and artefacts, and treatises on the domination and destruction of others. However, many of these ancient scriptures were imbued with the madness of the Sith who scribed them, making the knowledge capable of driving unprepared practitioners into the depths of their powers by this era. The rage and revenge that led to the dark side of the Force.

Unification

Civil war amidst the Sith continued for many thousands of years until the rise of Adas, who successfully brought all Sith nations to heel and under the united banner of his rule. Adas was raised as a chosen being due to his obsidian-coloured skin, growing into a powerful being who demonstrated great martial prowess and intellectual capabilities. Adas was also possessed of an extreme affinity for Sith sorcery, forging his massive battle axe through the use of alchemy.

Although it was with significant bloodshed, Adas united the disparate nations of Korriban into a single kingdom. As his reign continued, he became the inflexible, undisputed leader of the Sith, evolving into a figure akin to a king and a God. Eventually, Adas earned the title of Overlord and was bestowed the title of Sith'ari, the perfect being. The people came to believe that Adas's reign would be eternal and that Adas himself was immortal.

During his rule spanning nearly 300 years, one of the human exiles who found their way to Korriban challenged Adas to single combat. During this duel, Adas was slain by the exile, a woman named Andraste, and she assumed the throne as the Empress of the Sith. In the years to come, Andraste passed down her name, title, and very identity to her followers, and the exiles followed her example. Andraste became the first Sith of the modern Sith Empire and passed it on to her followers, giving them an identity they had longed to attain for years.

Disintegration
Under Andraste's rule, the Sith civilisation became the backbone of the newly formed Sith Empire, and Andraste utilised them to facilitate aggressive expansion to other planets. The Sith eventually grew into one of the largest known empires in the galaxy, with entire space sectors swearing fealty to them. Other planets would produce food and people in abundance to bolster their ranks, while others would provide ships in excess for them to continue their galaxy-spanning conquest.

However, such an expansive empire required immense demand for materials and sustenance. Eventually, the Empire grew to such a vast size that it needed entire planets to sustain it, and before long, those demands exceeded supply. During a lull in the galaxy's life, rebellions sprung up on various planets, demanding better working conditions, food, water, and credits. The Empire began to collapse on itself and, with it, the Sith people.

During this time, two powerful Sith Lords—Naga Sadow and arch-rival Ludo Kressh—rose from their seats on the Sith Council to fight to become the next in line to lead the Sith people. Kressh, following the old, traditional ways of the Sith, believed they must grow strong within themselves and remain to assist the Empire. In stark contrast, Sadow thought that the Sith's "Golden Age in the Empire" had made them stagnant and needed to separate from the Empire to re-establish themselves as an independent civilisation, creating a new empire of their own.

Kressh had the support from most other Sith to become the Dark Lord, while Sadow controlled most of the Sith's military forces. Together, they could have been powerful, but there could only be one Dark Lord of the Sith.

Civil war erupted. As the battle raged, there was never a decisive victor, with both sides injuring or dominating the other at various points. The war, however, resulted in the Sith essentially annihilating themselves and their civilisation. Sith Lords perished, artefacts, talismans, and strongholds were destroyed, and the forces and number of the Sith dwindled to such drastically low numbers that there was no conceivable way for them to recover from the damage they inflicted upon themselves fully.

Aftermath
Following the civil war that left the Sith and their civilisation in ruins, many Sith decided to live in isolation from the greater galactic society. Some others sought revenge against one another for the acts committed against them by the opposite side during the civil war, and others still chose to find their way to and join the new Sith Order left in the wake of the Empire's collapse.

The Sith race and society almost seemed to disappear, vanishing to become part of history. By and large, the galaxy considered their species and culture extinct. However, many Sith—Purebloods and hybrids alike—were still alive and well in the universe.

Intention

Although I am not a Sith player, I know many people who love the Sith on this website. I consider many of these people my friends after the short time I've been here, and with how much I love creating write-ups for the site, I decided to ply my trade to give my friends something they wanted: a site-canon Sith species write-up.

Thank you to everyone who helped me, including @Apollyon , @Mr. Teatime , @Xorism, @TheDudeMike, @Logan and others. I don't know much about the Sith, but you helped educate me and assisted me in writing about this species, and I hope this write-up makes you all proud and is something you can consider sufficient.

This is my love letter, and thank you to The Star Wars RP and everybody in it for memorable times, good laughs, and a place where I feel welcomed and accepted.
