A second lightsaber, tropical locations and aerial combat.

He was a pretty awesome Jedi Master wasn't he? None of his training had ever covered something like this and part of him was a little bit put out by that. People had said that his own training under Hannibal had been odd, had been accelerated and maybe they were right but he was beginning to think that he was going to end up being one of those Masters that the more respectable Masters looked down their noses at.

And since he was the one coming up with these missions and training trips, he was beginning to think that they were going to have a point. He couldn't blame any of these kinds of missions on his experiences with Hannibal after all because this was the first time he'd ever done something like this.

Narrowing his eyes, Crix reached out with the Force as the Drexl gathered itself and seemed to recognize him as the one who had caused it so much pain. It roared and Crix grimaced.

"Yeah guess I deserved that but..."

He made a gesture with his left hand and dozens of the larger splinterings of the trees they had fallen through came rocketing through the air, slamming into the back of the unsuspecting Drexl. As the creature roared in pain and snapped round as if to confront a new attacker, Crix's Ruping dived steeply, slashing its claws across the face of the Drexl. As it roared again and tried to snap at the Ruping, Crix darted in under its head and swung up.

The roar was cut short as Crix's blade carved a neat, burning, line through the front third of the creature's head. As it slid off, exposing the skull and inside of the creature's head, it swiped at Crix and the Jedi Knight deftly leapt over the wing before coming down with his lightsaber straight down, impaling the creature through the top of the skull.

He twisted the blade once and the frozen creature shuddered once before collapsing to the ground.

"... didn't want you to suffer."

Once the ruping was close to the drexl, Atias jumped off it and landed over the back of the agonizing creature. When it felt the Padawan over its back, the animal started to desperately struggle to remove him. Even if it couldn’t fly anymore, the drexl could still crush the half-Morellian if it decided to roll.

While the creature struggled, Atias sat between the drexl’s neck and head, holding the skin of the animal. With a smile on his lips, the Padawan thought that he probably looked like one of these cowboy’s that used to mount feral banthas. However, he wasn’t there to have fun. This animal was suffering and he needed to end it.

Atias used the Force to maintain himself over the beast, using his right hand to hold it. Then, he activated his lightsaber with his left one and in a fast movement, stabbed the skull of the creature with it. The drexl immediately stopped moving and his body collapsed in the ground. It wasn’t going to suffer anymore.

With the drexl now being dead, the ruping felt that it was safe for it to land. Atias deactivated his lightsaber and got down from the dead creature. “Now you come. You need to be more brave.” he said playfully, before rubbing the ruping’s head. "Let 's go. We need to find Crix now.” then, he got up on the animal’s back and flew after his Master.

He didn’t need to go too far away, Crix was in a close area to where the half-Morellian killed the drexl. Atias and his ruping landed next to the Zabrak “I see that you also dealt with it. I wonder what made them act this way.” he said, while walking toward his Master. “I heard that they were used as warbeasts, but they are animals. Large and carnivorous, but still animals. Killing everything in sight wasn’t normal.

Crix stepped away from the dead creature, extinguishing his blade and clipping it to his belt. He patted the side of his Ruping's head before considering sending it on its way. For now, the creature seemed genuinely happy to remain. The beasts that had threatened its home were dead and it felt safe in the area once more. Safety on Dxun was often a state in constant flux, but few creatures could call a Ruping prey.

The Drexl was one such creature but they would not be around for some time after this.

"It was a sick creature, driven mad."
he admitted with a small frown, "Probably would have had a much harder time of it if they'd kept their heads. Or if they had been some of the trained variants you might find over on Onderon itself."

Atias was right.

It wasn't normal.

"Reaching out to their minds to form a bond wasn't something we could do but did you get a taste of it? Did you feel it? The madness."
he clicked his tongue slightly, "The Tomb of Freedon Nadd is on this moon; literal cesspit of Dark Side energies. Even thousands of years later I wouldn't be surprised if some lingering nastiness reached out and touched things from time to time."

He tapped the head of the Drexl.

"What do you feel when you reach out, Atias?"
he urged his padawan to approach, "Reach out. Not to the Drexl, not to the jungle, not to Dxun or anything else. Just... reach out toward nothing. The Force will guide you to the answer. Hints, nudges, thoughts and gut instincts - the Force speaks to us as Jedi."

While his Master talked, Atias turned to look at the dead drexl some more. This creature was a bit scary, with its heavy body full of purple scales. The Padawan considered the ruping far more adorable than it. However, it was still a living creature and killing it was sad.

Would they have attacked us if they weren’t mad?” Atias said, after turning to look at Crix. “I have read how they can be vicious, but I thought that they only did it when they were hungry, felt threatened or were trained to do it.” the Padawan always thought that a normal animal would never attack someone without these reasons. They weren’t like the sentients, which used to hurt others because of their evilness.

I didn’t try to enter its mind. Things happened so fast that I didn't even think about it.” Atias wondered if he had tried to do it, the drexl would have calmed down. After hearing what his Master was saying, the half-Morellian doubted that it would have made any difference.

When Crix mentioned the Tomb of Freedon Nadd, Atias immediately turned to him “Why wasn't it destroyed?” he asked with all his sincerity. “When the Sith invade places, they destroy everything related to the Jedi. Why don't we do the same? This tomb should be destroyed or the entire moon would continue being poisoned by it!

As his Master asked, Atias closed his eyes and reached the Force. Among the natural flux that it had, the Padawan could feel some darkness on it. It was like a cold and cloudy day, with the sunlight occasionally passing through several clouds. The warmth wasn’t enough to give comfort, because there was too much cloudiness.

I can feel the Force, but there is some darkness here. It wasn’t strong like a Sith would be, but it’s diluted here.” Atias opened his eyes and turned to look at Crix. “Is it because of the tomb, right? It needs to be destroyed!

It was a good question.

One that Crix wasn't best equipped to deal with, honestly. His areas of study were rather in depth but they had never really included the jungle planets of the Galaxy and their denizens beyond what he'd researched before arriving on said planets. He had done research on Dxun as he had been here at least twice by this point but still.

"I'm not sure."
he admitted honestly, "As you say, they're a vicious breed even without any form of madness in the way. But typically they are able to just scare off their foes unless they're particularly hungry or have been provoked."

Would it have been enough for them to be defensive with the Ruping nest nearby? Potentially. They were competitors when it came to nesting grounds, water and food supplies. The only difference was that Drexl could also choose to hunt Rupings, whereas the Rupings couldn't say the same.

Crix reached out and poked Atias in the middle of his forehead as his Padawan was pulling himself out of the Force.

"Go back over what you just said, Padawan. The Sith destroy everything related to the Jedi when they invade a planet... so we should destroy everything related to the Sith. Does any part of that feel a bit off to you?"
he raised an eyebrow ridge before gesturing in the direction of the tomb, "Besides that, the tomb of Freedon Nadd is also the resting place of at least two generations of Onderonian royalty."

He jerked a thumb up, toward Onderon.

"Do you want to tell them that you've blasted one of their historical landmarks from orbit?"
he asked with a little smirk as he teased his Padawan, "So a teachable moment here kiddo; the Dark Side location is culturally important to the locals. Even if you blast it apart, the Dark Side's still gonna linger cus its not just physical is it? So. What do you do?"

Atias frowned when Crix poked his forehead. He had said nothing wrong. “There wasn’t anything off about what I said. It’s a fair justice and retribution, besides leaving a place so powerful with the Dark Side standing is dangerous.” differently of a Light Side place that was harmless to the environment, the Tomb of Freedom Nadd would continue corrupting Dxun and make other animals go crazy.

Then why didn't the Jedi try to purify it? I mean, now I can understand why it can’t be destroyed. Although, the royalty of Onderon probably had problems wanting to be buried in this place.” the Padawan couldn’t understand how someone would like to be buried together with a Dark sider like Freedom Nadd.

If destruction would not solve anything, then purification could help it. “The Sith corrupted the Temple of Ajan Kloss, right? Why can't the Jedi purify the darkness in the Tomb? Aren’t we capable of doing something like that?” Atias was certain that all the members of the Council together would be able to do it.

These thoughts made Atias wonder why the Jedi of the past never did it before. Was it in respect for the Onderonians? They should have tried to make the people of the planet understand that it was happening for their own good. The dark presence of this Tomb was dangerous for them.

Hmm, something to work on maybe.

Atias had a lot of fire, a lot of righteous indignation and fury about the Sith and how the Dark Side was allowed to corrupt things. The truth was that he couldn't really defend a lot of the actions of people in history. He especially couldn't defend the actions and attitudes of some of the ancient Jedi - their entire Order had been founded after the dissolution of the Old Jedi Order because it simply did not function as it should have done.

"Destruction is the way of the Sith, Padawan, it should never be the first choice of a Jedi."
he reasoned, looking over the jungles as he did so, "Purification is a much better option - you're exactly right."

It was.

Ajan Kloss had been corrupted by the Sith and Jedi had gone back and undone much of the corruption but even with that it was a place of harsh memories. Even after councillors and the like had done their best to cleanse it, Darkness would never be far from that place. If nothing else, the Jedi would remember the dark times there and it would cause even further clouding in the Force from the emotions.

"The royals of Onderon were buried there because they were related to Freedon Nadd. Some of them were just as shitty as he was - others weren't. Sometimes good can come from bad, even bad the likes of Freedon Nadd's line."
he reasoned as he sighed a little bit, thinking on the Tomb, "Partly the reason why its never been purified is that its a cultural thing. They know it's 'haunted' but it serves as a reminder to them; a warning about those who would abuse power. People have short memories without things like this to stick in the back of their throats and force them to never forget."

Crix gave his Padawan a lop-sided grin.

"And the other reason is rather boringly practical. Tombs like that? Kill the unprepared and no one has dedicated the time and the energy to make it a priority. So."
he rested a hand on his Padawan's shoulder, "There is a wrong there, just over the horizon, that you feel in your gut needs making into a right. Question is - what are you going to do about it? Are you and I alone enough to undo it or are we unprepared?"

"I really don’t understand why the Onderonians don’t want to have this place purified. Even if it was some sort of crazy tradition to have royalty buried in a haunted tomb, they would not be able to enter there without going crazy or worse because of the Dark Side.” Atias understood how traditions could be important for a culture, but in his opinion there were some that made no sense. Like being buried in a tomb full of Darkness.

I believe that it would be better for them. If they have this place purified, they could bury other nobles there, and even have tourist trips to visit it without the risk of them going crazy.” if there was something that he had learned was that nobles would always want to have monetary compensation for things that they do. “They could still have the legends of it being haunted, but this time without the fear of being tormented by the place.

Atias made a pause to think about what Crix said. While he believed that his Master was strong with the Force, the Padawan doubted that he would be enough to purify the Tomb. The half-Morellian wouldn’t be able to offer any aid. He wasn’t well trained with the Force like a Knight would be.

We aren’t prepared to do it.” Atias said, they would probably end up getting corrupted if they tried to do it alone. “But we can still do it. After we finish here, we ask if other Knights want to help us and then we get prepared to return here and do it. What do you think?” this would be the perfect solution.

At this point, the ruping that was close to Atias would start to pull his clothes. “What happened, boy?” the animal seemed to be wanting to leave. However, it didn’t seem to be fear and more as if it was in a hurry to be in another place.

Crix shrugged.

It was a lesson he had struggled with as a younger man as well so seeing it on someone else's face was a rather novel experience all told. Not a great experience but it was nice to know that he wasn't the only one who struggled with it. Looking in the vague direction of the tomb for a moment, he hummed in agreement.

"Maybe its different for us; because we can feel it on a level that they can't. They need to actively be targeted by the Dark to really feel it the same way that we do, you know?"
he suggested before sighing ever so slightly, "But it doesn't matter much. We need to talk to them and get their permission first - or else we can chalk this up to 'Jedi desecrating a cultural landmark with their weird magic'. Don't tell me you can't see that Holonet news report already in your head."

PR sucked but that wasn't the lesson.

"Besides, as Jedi we speak to people and we get them to see the Light that way - they make the steps and we show them the way. We skip out that part? We decide what is best for people and force it on them? Hell, the common sentient around the Galaxy is already afraid of what the Force allows us to do. Why prove their worst fears right?"
he smiled, "We come back, we talk to them. We convince them its the right thing to do and then we go and clean up that ancient mess."

It sounded simple and he honestly really hoped that it would be just as simple as he made it sound just then. Raising an eyebrow ridge, Crix gestured for Atias to mount up on the Ruping before doing the same with his own mount. Both of them seemed to be anxious in a way that they hadn't been before and they took wing quickly - heading toward the nest that they had seen earlier. As they landed, Crix dismounted atop one of the thicker branches and watched as the Ruping he had mounted started to fuss over several chicks.

Others did the same for their young but from the emotions he could feel, it was like birds in that they were only looking after those they had imprinted upon; those who were direct kin. As he looked around the nest, he spotted a small clump of mangled and ruined flesh... small bodies. The Drexl had clearly tried, and succeeded on some level, to eat the young of the Rupings in the nest - likely until the one they had last seen had driven them off at the cost of its life.

Movement in and amongst the dead caught his eye and Crix gently, respectfully, laid some of the ruined bodies to one side as he slowly uncovered a single Ruping chick hidden underneath the bodies of its hatch-mates. It cried out in hunger and none of the Rupings helped it - it was not theirs. Reaching out, Crix picked up the Ruping chick before making his decision; and handing it to Atias.

"Atias. Life is trying to find a way out of the darkness here - what are you going to do to help it?"

Atias paid attention to Crix’s answer to his idea of purifying the Tomb. The Zabrak wasn’t wrong, if they did it without the support or notifying the people of Onderon there was great chances of the Jedi Order once again appearing at the Tabloids. This time they would be accused as vandals or some idiot thing like that.

I guess that you are right, but I still think that it could be a good idea.” the half-Morellian would not forget it. He would find a way to make his idea work. Ridding a moon from the influence of the Dark Side should be one of the goals of the Jedi. Perhaps they could even use it as an opportunity to make a good PR. If they convinced the people first, of course.

Once the Padawan mounted the ruping, they flew toward what seemed to be the area of nests. Before they landed, Atias could see several adults taking care of chicks. This scene made a smile appear on his lips. It was amazing to see how the parents were careful with their children. Perhaps even better than some sentient beings of the Galaxy.

However, when he landed next to Crix, the Padawan could see that not everything there was good. In the nest where they landed there was a pile of dead rupings, probably more victims of the drexls. This only showed how the Dark Side was terrible and could bring destruction to everything.

The boy was surprised when Crix found the ruping chick among the dead ones. The poor thing seemed to be hungry and afraid. The half-Morellian can understand why he was this way, only luck could explain how the chick had survived the attack of the vicious predators. However, without parents it would not live much longer.

What?” Atias starred in a mix of confusion and surprise to his Master, when the Zabrak gave the chick to him. “Do you want me to be its mother?” he asked, before turning to look at the small creature on his hands. It was so fragile and weak, the chick wasn’t going to survive alone. The Padawan couldn’t bring himself to let it here alone. “Fine, I’ll do it.” he smiled at the animal. “You will need a name. What do you think of Zephyr?

Crix was glad.

Many Jedi these days heard that some of their ideas or actions might be seen by the press of the Galaxy as being suspect and they got scared. They backed down to either the potential, or actual, peer pressure of an entire Galaxy's majority. The majority who got their news and their opinions from holonet news sources that were designed to skew the news in one way or the other. Sometimes they benefited - many times they did not. It was a good sign that Atias seemed uncowed by the existence of such a pressure.

"I think you might be right."

He just needed to encourage this line of courage and see the young Padawan flourish into a strong Jedi Knight. But part of becoming a Jedi Knight was becoming more well-rounded in how you approached things. Courage was a useful part of being a Knight but courage without compassion was often a gateway to traits and emotions that would not help the young Jedi at all.

Compassion.

He would learn compassion by becoming the parental figure to this lost and helpless creature. The easy thing to do would be to drop the Ruping and let it die - as nature was want to do. The better thing, perhaps, was to drop the Ruping chick off at a local animal shelter on Onderon. It would be a good thing to do but would it be the Right thing to do?

This way they would grow together, they would teach each other and, when they were ready, they would protect each other. Crix placed a hand on Atias' shoulder and grinned.

"Come on Atias - we've some supplies on the ship that should feed it for now. We'll make sure to stop by Onderon on the way back to grab some of its preferred foods."

Atias smiled triumphantly when Crix said that he was right. “Of course I’m right! We can try to show it to the Council when we return to the Temple. I bet that Master Voran and the others would see it as a good way to increase the PR of the Order, and the Onderonians would be happy to exploit the Tomb as a tourist attraction without risking having everyone going mad and worse.” he knew very well how this type of people was. They only needed to appeal to the idea of gaining money and they would accept to cooperate.

While Crix was in silence, contemplating something, the Padawan was looking at Zephyr. The small chick was adorable, it looked like a miniature version of the adult. Such fragile life would have died without them. The half-Morellian would take care of it and help it become an adult.

He turned to look at his Master, when he felt the Zabrak put his hand on his shoulder. “Ok, Master! We could also investigate to see if the Onderonians do tourist visits to the Tomb.” Atias said, while hugging Zephyr more tightly. By the way that it was trying to be noticed by the adults, the chick was probably very hungry. They needed to give something for it to eat as soon as possible. The Padawan walked toward the adult ruping that had brought them to this area.

Then, Atias noticed something. “How are we going to return to the ship? I can’t hold in the ruping while also having Zephyr in my arms.” while the chick was calm, the Padawan feared that it could enter in panic when they started to fly. “Would it fit on my backpack?” he gestured with his head to the object on his back. “I could use it like a kangaroo bag. Like these that people use to carry babies nowadays.

Kid had the kind of smile that made Crix want to keep him protected - there was an innocence in that smile that had been missing from so many of the Jedi Padawans as of late. Crix himself hadn't been able to claim any kind of innocence long before he actually joined the Jedi Order himself but that didn't mean he didn't like to see it protected when he absolutely could.

"Hope you can keep all those ideas straight in your head, Atias."
he joked lightly, "All good ideas but you're going to need to keep them together if you're going to present them to the Order. Got to make sure your mission suggests are precise and concise."

He had run afoul of that rule in the past and been told by Alex that he needed to make sure he could summarize the mission accurately in fifty words or less. Hans had flicked him repeatedly in the face when he neglected to do that with his mission reports to his Master when he was a Padawan himself.

Reaching into his pocket, Crix pulled out his com-unit and held up a finger for Atias to wait a moment as he called someone on his com-link.

"Yes, Lancer? Yes, Lancer, it's Crix. Can you bring the ship round to my location? No, you won't be able to land but just hovering above the treeline should be fine enough."
he instructed the pilot droid, "See you soon."

Shutting off his com, he grinned a little bit as they could already hear the ship heading in their direction.

"One of the lessons my Master taught me - never do anything the hard way if there's an easy way that doesn't compromise your morals."
he joked before gesturing up to the top of the trees, "You will need to fit him in the backpack anyway, though, because we're going to need to climb up higher and then we're going to need to make a big jump."

With the Force such a jump was possible even in the midst of combat - with nothing to endanger them, Atias should be able to make the jump. Of course, Crix would make the jump first so he was able to use the Force to Pull his Padawan up if he didn't quite get enough height on the jump.

Atias stopped talking when his Master gestured to him. He watched the Zabrak use his comm-link to call Lance. While he did it, the half-Morellian turned to look at Zephyr. The chick was still hungry, but he was calmer. “You are a good boy.” the Padawan smiled, before moving his hand to rub his head. The chick chirped in pleasure.

Once Crix finished using the comm link, Atias turned to look at him. The Zabrak had a grin on his lips, probably because the ship was already coming to them and they wouldn’t need to walk or fly with the rupings to get here. The half-Morellian was happy with it too. It would be a problem for him to hold in the ruping while carrying Zephyr in his arms.

Those are very wise words.” the boy wasn’t a lazy person, but if he could do things in an easy and correct way, he would not complain. “Your Master seemed to be a very smart man. I would have liked to meet him.” from the stories that Crix told him, Atias came to think that Hans was the perfect mix of wise Jedi and fun guy. The type of person that the half-Morellian liked to talk with.

I hope that he fits inside it.” Atias said, before crouching on the ground and leaving Zephyr here. Then, he picked his backpack and tried to find a way to make the chick fit inside it. After some attempt, the Padawan was able to make the ruping stay inside it, while only its head was out of the backpack. “Now we can go.

The Padawan watched his Master use the Force to enhance his movements and then jump up. “Hold tight here, Zeph. We’ll go up right now.” the Ruping chirped as if agreeing with what they were going to do. The half-Morellian gathered the Force around himself, before making a jump. He would make an inelegant landing near the Zabrak.

Hans was many things to many people and most of them would admit that he was smart - but more of a smartass than he was a deep thinker. But he had the right ideas a lot of the time. Ideas that saw people actually grow and heal rather than just rushing from one fight to the next out of some desperate need to prove themselves and their way of life correct through violence against those who disagreed.

"He was a good man."

He smiled a little bit.

"You'd probably have wanted to slap him inside of five minutes - that was fairly typical."

Having made the jump safely himself, Crix watched attentively as Atias made the same jump though he had his arm around the boy to make sure he didn't teeter over the edge when he landed with a bit of a struggle. He helped Atias back to his feet properly as they moved deeper into the ship, the cargo bay door closing behind them. Crix grinned as he patted Atias on the shoulder.

"We'll work on your landings."

Atias noticed his Master’s reaction when the Padawan mentioned Hans. Perhaps it was still too soon to talk about the deceased man. The last thing that the half-Morellian wanted was to make Crix feel uncomfortable by remembering painful memories. Losing a Master must be terrible.

The Padawan laughed with his Master’s comment. “Maybe. I have a strong hand, it would be painful for him.” he said playfully, but with respect. He wanted to show to Crix that he respected the memory of Hans, even with his joke.

After landing, Atias accepted the help of the Zabrak. “It’s because I’m carrying a baby here.” he pointed to the chick on his back, which squeaked as if agreeing with the Padawan. “My landings are very good. I never had problems when jumping the Temple’s wall to explore the forest.” he wasn’t afraid of telling it to his Master. From what he knew about Crix, it was obvious that he did something like that before.
