STAR ADDER

Star Adder's are giant space-faring reptiles, typically extending sixty feet in length, though they never stop growing over their life, and a height of twelve to twenty feet in height as an adult. They are relatively slow, mainly acting as an ambush hunter with four sharp fangs and a snake-like tongue adapted to assist in locating food in space by locating life-bearing planetoids. How this is done is unknown.

The snake's body is covered in soft scales that range from black to dark blue and always dotted with white specks. The scales are not armor, as the Star Adder faces very little competition for food but are instead designed to keep heat inside the creature's body during long space voyages.

  • Planet: Moon of Rattatak.
  • Lifespan: A Star Adder, provided they consume enough food prior, can enter a form of Torpor that essentially provides false immortality. It uses this to travel between star systems though this journey typically takes millions of years considering the distances involved. A Star Adder will never die of old age through this method, but if no food is present and it cannot enter Torpor, it will likely perish within two years.
  • Diet: A Star Adder will consume whatever it can fit within its mouth. As long as they can be consumed, meat, plants, and minor asteroids seem to give the creature some nutrition. If nothing can be found, it will postpone its death with photosynthesis while slowly withering away, waiting for appropriate food to cross its path.
  • Behavior: The Star adder prefers to act as an ambush predator because of its immense size. It cannot burrow through stone but can crawl into soft dirt to lay in wait and so prefers flatland and grass while on a planet. In space, it acts in much the same way; however, because of the comparative sparsity of food, it will move more often to find new sources of nutrition.
  • Breeding: Star Adder's breeding cycle is prolonged. The breeding season lasts for a Rattataki year, but the solitary nature of the creatures makes it hard to find a mate. They lay clutches of eggs by the thousands, but only a few will survive birth, eating their siblings before moving on.
  • Strengths: It boasts an immense size and strength, with massive fangs more comparable to giant swords than teeth. Despite not being a sentient creature, the snakes possess a particular cleverness, knowing the exact moment to strike at and kill their target. On top of this, as long as food can be found, a Star Adder can survive in any environment.
  • Weaknesses: Having evolved in space with little competition, the Star Adder has fragile natural armor more suited to keeping energy in during travel than protecting its hide.

HISTORY
Star Adders are feared predators native to the Rattatak system. They evolved on a moon orbiting the planet of Rattatak as space-dwelling creatures, sporting dark blue and black scales spotted with white dots.

It has been the dominant predator on its moon for millions of years, forcing all other life to hide or be eaten by its forever hungering maw. When the population of Star Adders grows too great, they begin to fight and feast on one another before leaving their moon in a great exodus, leaving only clutches of eggs behind.

Many fall to Rattatak, striking great fear and reverence into the native Rattataki, who initially hid in their homes or sought shelter in caves, only venturing out in great groups to hunt the creatures, keeping the population on the planet low. Other's found new homes on other planets of the solar system, but due to the sparsity of food on other worlds, only the most efficient cannibals survive. Others still enter a form of Torpor, shooting themselves off into the void of space, hoping to one day find a new star system to feast upon.

INTENT
I want to hunt it with a spear and perhaps use it as a symbol in some RP's. Also, I thought a space-faring snake would be an interesting addition, especially since a particularly successful creature will never stop growing and would give people with ships a leviathan to shoot at.
