A bit of old news (from the end of May), but I thought it was most relevant towards Rebels and I'm surprised no one has talked about it (if my Search bar did not fail me). First, take a look at this post on Twitter by Dave Filoni, the Executive Producer of Star Wars Rebels.

https://twitter.com/dave_filoni/status/736385452920438792

What makes the image that Filoni posted exciting is that it's likely one of the older Star Wars Expanded Universe novels (unless Filoni does not take good care of his books). We have seen some old EU content be re-canonized in the form of various starships like the Interdictor Star Destroyers with their gravity well generators, so what if we see an old character from Legends lore? This image from Reddit excited many redditors as to what book Filoni took a picture of:

Heir-to-the-Empire-book-binding.jpg

Heir to the Empire was released in 1991 and saw a 20th Anniversary edition published in 2011, the latter distinctly different since it included a novella called Crisis of Faith, featuring Thrawn. This led to rumors that we might see Grand Admiral Thrawn be re-canonized through Star Wars Rebels. Other notable characters who make their first appearance in Heir to the Empire include Gilad Pellaeon and Talon Karrde. This speculation, however, does not take into account the Sith holocron that Ezra took in the finale, which may have a Legends character appear as the gatekeeper.

Do you guys think this is on the mark? Or are there alternative answers to what Legends lore might appear in the next season?

I like the idea of introducing Thrawn in the show, just as long as he doesn't bring with him the Chiss Ascendancy and all that lore. That always seemed out of place in Star Wars.

@Johnnysaurus Rex and I have talked a bit about how Thrawn could be in the show. We like the idea that he's a foil for Sabine. They are both artistically- and creatively-minded, so it would make sense for Thrawn to be an antagonist in Sabine's storyline. They would each be trying to outthink the other, and it would heighten Sabine's prominence on the show - which is already happening, since Dave Filoni has said that Sabine will be more of a co-lead with Ezra next season. Johnny and I were also saying it'd be cool if Thrawn was Sabine's instructor at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore, to give them a personal history too.

The starships and visual aspects of the Ascendancy felt out of place to me (aside from the uniforms: they looked pretty nice), but I did like how their names reflected their cultural standing.

That's definitely something Lucasfilm wants to get rid of too. Not the idea of names that reflect their cultural standing, but names Wi'th Ap'ostr'ophes Ev'erywh'ere.

That's fair enough.

I thinnk they could revamp the chiss in the same way they've re-imagined mandalorians, and bring them into the canon proper. It would definitely make for an interesting story, that the empire being as very pro-humanity as it has been, has someone like Thrawn working for them. Plenty of chances now to change some of the context of the chiss, as much as some might feel that to be a bad move, and make for a good story with potential even for later on in the franchise.

Filoni also revealed this little snippet of an upcoming episode in Season 3. Thoughts?

I am a fan of the little changes we can see so far. Ezra is clearly more skilled now, more mature, and seems to have actually grown too. I also like his new lightsaber and that he is just using a regular blaster now as opposed to his lightsaber/stun-gun invention. Looking forward to seeing how Kanan has changed too. And Hondo is always a plus!
