Fashionably late, as usual. Jin was long overdue to release a statement on Kuat, and as he was surrounded by journalists and mildly disinterested reporters alike, he made his thoughts on the matter very clear.

Fondor wholeheartedly denounces the recent, treasonous actions of Senator Vaz,” he declared, hands resting against the translucent, glass podium. “For generations, Kuat has been the Republic’s greatest producer of naval vessels and planetary defense crafts. The Kuat Drive Yards brand has historically been dependable and its agents have had unimpeachable behavior in carrying out its business. Senator Vaz’s actions—selling vessels meant for the Republic Navy, for the defense of our worlds—reminds us why so many have fled the Republic, and besmirches the good name of the people he claims to represent.

I think the people of Kuat should think long and hard about electing him to serve further terms. In fact, I believe Senator Vaz should, in good faith, resign his post and whatever shares he owns. I also call on the Republic Senate to investigate the senator’s dealings and take all due measurements to ensure this does not happen again.

His nostrils flared. A lie. It would happen again, and it would keep happening as long as Jin continued to rule. After all, Vaz was not the only shipwright to make underhanded deals. He was just the dumbest. Had he not known the rule of thumb when it came to trading ships? Never, ever cut direct transactions with your clients. It should have been simple enough. Now, Vaz had to ruin the fun for everyone else, and Jin knew he himself would have to lay low for the next few months in his more private dealings.

In the meantime,” he continued, “I would also invite the Chancellor to the royal palace on Fondor. It is high time we review Fondor’s contracts with the Republic. Kuat’s recent actions have brought up the need for there to be checks on its military and economic power moving forward, and Fondor would enjoy the opportunity to play a part in these measures.” An opportunity to seize all its military agreements, too. Jin could already imagine the millions of credits this fiasco would rake in.

He sighed, almost wistfully, and with his statement finished, left to work. There was still lots to do: fleets to build, deals to cut, and plenty worlds to take over.
