Drow Venn was almost done packing his few meager possessions to make his way to the Jedi Praxeum on Ifrane. It was a quiet process. His ancient Y-Wing was stocked with all the weapons he'd owned that would be, no doubt useful in the battles to come, and his faithful R2 unit beeped sadly as he looked at the Yavin Temple one more time through his photoreceptors. Drow was similarly melancholy. Although he willingly accepted exile and fully acknowledged that this was a merciful punishment for his transgressions, there was still a twinge of sadness at the thought that he'd possibly never see the place that he'd called home for so many years now.

The Grojuk Clan that served as the Temple's Guardsmen had given him a farewell dinner last night that had devolved into an evening of heavy drinking and good-natured brawling. Drow wouldn't have had it any other way. He knew that they would be up to the task of protecting the Temple in his absence - he'd trained them well and they had been battle tested after Ossus. He spotted a couple of younglings playing near one of the trees in the distance and regretted the fact that he might never again teach a class to them again. He'd hoped his saber instructions had prepared them for the Sith and hoped even more that they'd never have to use what he taught them.

But if that day came when the Sith reached Yavin IV, Drow knew that the half-human, half-Zabrak standing before him would be a capable leader in his absence. Because Alexandria Voran had exiled him to lead the Jedi Shadows on Ifrane, Drow was forced to step down as Chief of Temple Security and name a successor in his stead. After a couple of long evenings debating and meditating on the decision, Drow knew that Crix Aran would be a solid choice. There really wasn't any other option in the Ishi Tib's mind.

Byron Ryker was capable but was too involved in the defenses of Lothal and Brighthome to be able to commit to another Temple's security. Isen Ramm had fought by Drow's side many a time and was more than combat-capable but Drow worried that the man's shyness and devotion to the natural world might get in the way of things. Izel Thral would make a fiercely intelligent commander and was a Master but her skills lie more in the diplomatic and sensory arts rather
than combat. Drastus Drahr would make a fine leader and the Gammorreans respected him but was a bit reckless and still a Padawan at that.

So it had to be Crix. The young man and Drow had been on several missions together and Drow knew he could depend on the man. He'd survived the fighting at both Sullust and Ossus, two skirmishes that Drow himself was present for and knew how dangerous that was. The Ishi Tib Master had seen firsthand at a birthday party of all things how Crix could keep his head cool in tense situations while still being able to cut loose and party in a way that the Grojuk clan would respect. Plus, he'd been there at the very beginning when Drow had been trying to establish the Yavin Temple Security Force on Raxus Prime where they'd obtained a team of technicians and a walker. The Junker techs on the Security Force respected Crix as they knew him to be both merciful and tech-savvy. The young man would do well as the new Chief of Security.

"...anyways, Master Drallig's Holocron always helped me when I didn't know what to do. But I'm sure you will, kid. You're a good fighter, a good man, and a great Jedi. You'll probably do better than I ever did." Drow said, clapping Crix on the shoulder as he had finished packing up his Y-Wing "You got any questions for me before I take off?"

"Either of you?" he asked, nodding towards Alex as well.

Did he have any questions?

A few.

"The fuck?"

He only muttered it under his breath rather than saying it aloud as he might have done before. Despite his strong feelings about suddenly being 'promoted' to such a position, Crix wasn't quite as impulsive as he had been as a Padawan. Had he still been a Padawan he would have dropped said F-bomb was far more confidence.

As it was, confidence was kind of the issue at play here anyway.

Crix ran a hand over the spikes atop his head in a tick so very similar to humans running their fingers through their hair when they found something to be vexing. He liked to think and say the word 'Vex' but he didn't much enjoy being vexxed as he was with this entire premise.

"Alright I get that you might not be in a position to be head of Temple Security for Yavin but what makes either of you think that I'm the next best option for the role?"
he asked, genuinely confused due to his own recently bruised confidence, "I'm not even a Jedi Master, isn't that, like, a requirement?"

All these responsibilities... they were weighing heavily on his mind enough as it was.

Alex’s mind was carefully closed. Her thoughts a gently flowing river through the Force. Deep below the surface, turmoil rolled her heart. Drow left her no choice. His actions forced her hand, but they could not afford to lose a Jedi of his caliber while the war waged. She made the right choice…difficult as it was. The almost greater shock had been Drow’s selection for Chief of Security. Crix had only recently accepted a Padawan to train and he was all of twenty years old. Luckily, Alex was much older. This was Drow’s choice, and she would honor that choice. He’d earned that from her.

She smiled at Drow first. “Send word when you get there. You’ll need to talk to Sevrin.” The half-sephi had turned down the job but perhaps that was the will of the Force. Drow would still need his guidance. “Crix, you’re not doing this alone.” Her gaze shifted between the two Jedi. “No one of us could hope to replace Master Venn but you are his choice and I agree.” She projected confidence into the Force. “You and I will work together to ensure the safety of the Temple. It is as much my responsibility as it is yours.” Alex’s voice was firm. Her belief in the decision clear.

“When you are ready, I will take a less active roll, but the reality is the safety of the Order belongs to all of us…” She paused for a moment. “The war muddies the lines between ranks. A title changes little.” Crix was a good man and a good Jedi. He was still young. Far too young for Alex to allow him to accept this role completely on his own. She still had some wisdom knocking around her brain.

"Neither of you two will be alone. Arc Trintegala is a better captain than I ever was and the Grojuk Clan was a well-oiled machine at this point. Just watch them around booze." Drow joked, referring to the Abednedo captain that commanded the Temple Guardsmen and reported to the Chief of Security.

"And Crix, have some confidence in yourself. I've seen a lot of soldiers in my life and a lot of Jedi. At the end of the day, I want someone who can think quickly on their feet, fight when they have to, and command the respect of the Guardsmen. And yeah, you have all that in spades but more importantly? When the chips are down and a decision needs to be made? You're a good man and I trust you to make the right call, youth be damned." Drow assured the young Knight before him. The Ishi Tib liked to think he had an eye for talent, at least in regards to security and warfare and as young as Crix was, he'd seen the young man demonstrate all the traits he'd want someone sharing a foxhole with him to have.

"One more thing. I have the princess of Eiattu is safely offworld but what is to be done with her? The Sith think the Pykes kidnapped her and are out for blood? Do we keep her hidden? Return her to her people? Reach out to the Pykes? She wants to get back at the Sith that took her world and her presence would inspire resistance groups on planet but, given my heh recent reassignment, I'm not sure I have the authority to make that call." Drow asked mainly Alex although he was also eager to hear Crixs thoughts.

Damn it.

Mere weeks after Ossus and then Dantooine and he was being given more and more in the way of responsibilities. He already had a Padawan and was helping others as and when he could find the time. Already he was in danger of calling his mom less often than he would like and he had a feeling the next time he received a Force vision in the shape of his older self he would be disappointed.

A title changed little to Alex but it added yet more weight onto Crix's shoulders and, yet, he couldn't help but feel that he wasn't going to be able to say no. That part of his didn't want to say no was a factor as well that had to be taken into consideration.

"Confidence is hard to comeby when it comes to me keeping people safe - I've been directly involved in the last two Temple attacks."
he muttered again, "I feel like I'm some kind of trouble magnet but... alright. I will do this because, heck, if I don't do this now then it'll be an open position."

And an open position relating to the defense of the Yavin Temple was a gap in the armour of the Jedi. As conversation turned to the Princess of Eiattu, Crix had the sudden feeling that he was present for something he likely didn't have clearance for.

Wait... shit he did now.

"Way I see it if the Princess is free and clear of the Sith and is anti-Sith? She needs to be openly anti-Sith."
he argued with a frown, "See if we can't get her in front of the Galactic Senate? Or maybe just the ISC since they're closest."

When did he grow up to get involved in topics that changed the fates of millions?

“A feeling we share.” Was it the Light that attracted the Darkness? Ossus and then Telos…she did not seek conflict, but it seemed to find her, nonetheless. “Our fates are forever tied to the Sith. There can be no Light without Darkness.” Alex shook her head slightly. “I should really save that kind of wisdom for a larger audience.” The Grandmaster smiled softly. None of this was easy. It was necessary. “We both trust you, Crix…for good reason and I will be right beside you.” She shifted her focus to the Princess. What to do with the rescued maiden? “Agreed.”

Her thought twirled around next steps. “She needs to be very publicly anti-Sith and we need to turn the tide with the ISC.” Alex’s faced scrunched as she thought. “We’ll handle the forward-facing part when the time comes.” Her eyes flicked to Crix and then back to Drow. “The quieter aspects should be handled elsewhere.” Her meaning to Drow would be clear. The Shadows needed to very carefully position the Princess to speak out while joining the ISC.

“We need all the allies we can muster.” That part went without saying. They were slowly gaining ground in public reception, but the war was complicated. People hated complicated things…they wanted quick and easy. Who to love and who to hate.

Drow took Alex's meaning as she intended it although he only gave a small, quiet nod in response. There was no point in spoiling a nice sendoff with the gritty details of what those "quieter aspects" might consist of. Drow still had some connections with the Eiattu resistance leaders who had survived Darth Asminys' assault and he knew of some other ways protection could be secured for the princess to give her a safe platform with which to speak out against the Sith.

"I guess that settles it." Drow said, looking off in the distance as the sun began to literally set on Yavin IV and figuratively set on his time as a conventional Jedi here on the Temple. The matter of succession and the princess had been decided and it seemed like the time to depart was upon him. His brain suddenly reacted violently, trying to come up with something, anything to say to either of those two. A conversation starter, a chore he'd forgotten to do in the Temple, a new song he'd learned - anything that could keep him on the place he loved most in the galaxy for another few moments.

"I..." Drow began before something flew into his eye. That was the only explanation because he was not the crying type and water seemed to be inexplicably flowing from his eyes.

"I guess it's time to go now."

Crix was glad that it was something he could leave to Alex to deal with now that it had been determined that the Princess should probably be allowed to be shown around the Galaxy as being actually anti-sith. If the Jedi just told people she was then that wouldn't work at all because of course the Jedi would say that... especially since it would also unravel the secrets surrounding their capture of her from the damned planet in the first place. It hadn't been said but Crix was willing to bet that they didn't want it getting out that the Jedi had managed to do a false flag operation as the Pykes against the Sith.

The Pykes and the Sith might already hate them but they didn't want to give them more reason to go all out against them and attack them in more inventive ways. Crix ran a hand over the spikes of his head and let out a deeper breath before nodding.

"Think I'll leave all that to you."
he told Alex with a shrug, "I might be moving up in the Galaxy but I'm still making sure to keep myself out of politics. Too much bullshit for me to be comfortable with any of that."

Drow tried to hide it but it was no use - they all knew that the Master was getting emotional about the whole thing and Crix couldn't blame him. He had put a lot of work into Yavin's Temple and he had a right to be upset to see himself leaving it. At least he was going to be doing more in the vein of helping the Order in ways and places that few others wouldn't. He knew that the older Master would appreciate that.

Crix placed a hand on his shoulder.

"May the Force be with you, Drow."

The Grandmaster was gone. In her place stood simply stood Alex. The mask of serenity slowly melted away. Her mental walls sinking into nothingness. Drow did not need anymore advice from her…he needed his friend and so did she. There was no mistaking the sadness that resonated in the small group. Alex was hurt. She’d never wanted this for Drow. She watched him grow into a man she deeply respected. Her friend. Now, she was forced to watch him walk away from a Temple he helped build. They should be sad. They should hurt. The right choice did not make any of this easier. Honestly, she didn’t know what to say.

“This is not goodbye, but I’ll see you later.” Alex met Drow’s eyes. “You will always be one of my dearest friends…ask and I will be there.” The exile would be convincing, but Drow was not alone. She would remain to pull him from the shadows if needed. The Morellian Jedi watched carefully over all the Jedi Shadows. They played their role well and it was her responsibility to do the same. She moved in opposite Crix’s arm to give arm a short hug. “Never alone, Drow. Ever.” She stepped back.

“May the Force be with you.” Alex nodded as finality settled over the Force. It was done. The path was set and now they must walk where their choices had taken them. Journey before destination and all that.

"May the Force be with you too, kid. You're going to do great." Drow replied back to Crix, accepting the words and friendship that the two of them offered. They were the future of the Order, not him. It was their optimism, devotion and ability that would see the Jedi through to victory and peace, not his ways. But, in the meantime, he'd do what he could in the shadows to help them and the others succeed in their goals, lurking in the darkness and striking out so other Jedi didn't have to.

"Damn pollen. Probably a good thing I'm getting offworld." Drow chuckled, wiping away the mysterious moisture from his eyes that was most unbecoming of a fierce warrior such as himself. He gave his astromech droid Sparky a pat on the head as he started to climb into his ship, now ready to take off.

"It's like you said. I'll see you later." Drow repeated Alex's words back to her and Crix as he stepped into his Y-Wing, now fully packed and headed off to Ifrane and his new future as a shadow and an exile...
