Tava was born into a life that was more tribal in nature than the average civilian on Rhen Var. She was raised among the Matukai, following their teachings and mastering martial arts. Her teachings focused entirely on honing the body into a weapon, and she believed in them enough to forsake using other weapons.

Her skills in unarmed combat are her strongest asset, and she strongly follows the principles to abstain from even carrying a blade on her. The Matukai had historically rejected the ways of the Jedi, but over time their rigid views relaxed. As a result, during the time of Luke Skywalker, the Matukai welcomed the Jedi principles and ideologies, though they did not stray from teaching their people in the ways of unarmed combat.

Tava had been stubborn about embracing the ways of Jedi since she had been a child. Her family was especially proud of the Matukai tradition, and they taught her to excel in combat and practice the code set by tradition. However, as she grew older, she began to realize that life within her village could be limiting.

In a move that ultimately upset her family, she set out to track down members of the Jedi Order to become a part of something bigger than herself. As a Force user, she had honed her skills as far as they could go with Matukai teachings, but the Jedi could unlock many more abilities and paths for her.

She had missed the period of time to be a youngling, but she hoped to join the order as a padawan with a master to guide through being a Jedi.
