Small dots flickered in the darkness of the closed pod for a brief second while the program loaded, only to be nearly instantly washed if the glow of the holo projector. Darkness melted away to suddenly be replaced with the sights and sounds of a small local task carrier, every bulkhead, every crew member nearly indistinguishable from the real thing save for a very faint glow, and semi transparency.

Outside the crafts view port the mottled tunnel of hyperspace suddenly gave way to star lines, then star points as the craft dropped into real space.

" Sir, we just came out, at about 70km from the coordinates provided by command, standing by for further orders" spoke the helmsman.

" communication in the system suddenly went silent at our arrival " came the coms officer.

" asteroid cluster on scanners....not seeing anything yet sir, looks quiet"

Alright Ensign, the command is yours, even though this is not the real deal, its best to treat it as if it was. Lets show these goons that even our rookies are better trained than their seasoned officers!

Trip Yar stood at the bridge of his small carrier vessel, eyes out the viewport, sweeping the asteroid field. He turned and walked down the bridge and examined the engineer's monitor before returning attention to his crew.

"Our mission is to destroy this Hutt post before reinforcements can arrive. See if you can jam their communications." he commanded very sternly to the com's officer.

"I also want a scan of the asteroid field. See if there are any enemy vessels present in the system."

Trip folded his arms behind his back, and made one last sweep of the bridge with his serious eyes before returning to his spot at the viewport.

Being built into an asteroid was a clever way to fool scanners for a time, small gravity shadows often kept the back sides well hidden from synthetic eyes. The difficulty came when the large rock rotated and allowed itself to be targeted.

This is exactly what happened. There anchored to one of the larger asteroid sat a small facility no larger than a mid sized freighter equipped with several docking bays and two rail defense turrets designed more as an emergency deterrent than for long holdouts.

Stillness still reigned in the cluster of stone, making no indication if they were aware of the republic craft.

Trip scanned the asteroid base very carefully before deciding on his next set of orders.

"Though it is not apparent, the enemy must be around here; cloaked by the surrounding asteroids. They must be trying to lure us into a false sense of security; making us think we have the element of surprise. I want all available fighters to be scrambled and used to draw attention away from this vessel." he commanded the helmsman.

"Also, prepare our turbolaser batteries for firing but hold fire until I give the signal."

He then turned to the com's officer, "Status report on the attempt to jam their communications." he said with a calm tone.

" it appears to have worked, were not detecting any signals coming from the outpost Sir." the ensign at the com station reported.
***Don't be afraid to control the actions and communications of your NPC crew as if telling a story, when unsure if a tactic was working like in this...note the enemy posted " stillness, and made no mention of communications, this may be assumed by the characters that the jamming signal was working just as intended"******

As the republic began powering up, red lights began flashing atop the facility, bay doors opening. The Republic vessel was closing slowly and with caution. This was perhaps the best time to try and evacuate the the outpost. Taking the chance one small personal shuttle peeled out arching heavily to it's left before diving downwards and under several smaller rocks, looking to find a hyperspace point somewhere under the mass of the republic craft.

Trip saw the ship leave the Hutt command post and immediately began preparing his crew for combat. Just as he had ordered, his three available fighters left the hanger of his carrier vessel and formed up just below the vessel.

"Green Squadron, I want you to pursue all escaping vessels and prevent them from finding an escape route." he commanded via his communication channel with the fighters.

He then wheeled around and faced the tractor beam operator, "Prepare the tractor beam and pull that escaping shuttle in as soon as it becomes visible. Once you have it in your beam, send a security detail to detain the crew."

"Yes, sir!" the tractor beam operator replied, tapping a few commands into his monitor.

Trip walked further down the bridge to the weapons control station.

"Aim the turbolasers for those small defense turrets and fire when ready."

"Aye, captain." the operator replied.

-----
In space, the fighters responded to their orders as commanded. The formed up and began their pursuit of the fleeing transport, trying to draw it into the open for the tractor beam.

At the same time, the Republic carrier vessel aimed fire at the Hutt post's defense turrets.

The Shuttle took notice of the fighters headed its way, flipping on its access to port and veering off heavily to keep as much distance as possible while awaiting the calculations to complete. The sudden eruption of activity triggered the automated rails to fire in short intervals in the direction of the fighters, not yet gaining range on the carrier.

A second shuttle launched from the bay, this time 3 unidentified fighters in escort, the fighters kept back to form a buffer between any would be pursuers

* basic tip* When bullets and weapons start firing, just like character battles remember that sometimes taking the hits are unavoidable, sometimes they are. Use your best judgment on the situation and act accordingly, honesty in these moments is the best way to avoid ooc arguments

Green Squadron was not prepared for the fire to be directed at them, and one of the fighters was lightly hit.

"Sir, this is Green One. I've received light damage to my right wing. Can you do something about those turrets?" the pilot of Green One's fighter said over the communicator.

On the bridge of the carrier, Trip was making his rounds once more.

"Green One, this is Captain Yar. Continue your present course. We will take care of the defense turrets. Green Two, break off your pursuit of the first transport and prepare to engage that second one. Green Three, you are also to break off from the first transport and engage the fighter craft surrounding the second transport." he commanded over the comm.

He then walked down to the weapon's operator once more, "Fire immediately at those defense turrets."

Meanwhile, the tractor beam operator had the first transport on his scanner and engaged the tractor beam, attempting to pull it in.

Outside, Greens Two and Three broke off from their formation. Green Two came in behind the second transport and began firing its Ion Cannons at the transport, hoping to disable it. Green Three came in from above, firing its laser canons for the first fighter.

At the same time, the carrier began firing its turbolaser batteries at the defense turrets on the Hutt base.

The moment the fighters became aware of the republic group they instantly began trying to gain maneuvering room to allow pattern runs. Large figure 8 patterns designed to frustrate enemy fighters.

one fighter however is unable to start his flight before a Republic craft is on his tail.

With the loss of it's support the second shuttle began to rotate itself slightly, hoping the alternating profile would make aim more difficult, Ion washing over it's hull to excite the shielding periodically.

the first shuttle in a hurry to escape the fighters noticed the withdrawing of the second and third fighters, hoping the advantage was his, and performed a slingshot around a small rock, to once again aim in the direction of his jump vector, only to be caught on approach by the carrier.

The base's shields held up for only a few rounds of fire before winking out enough for shots that stray shots from the carrier found points on the body of the station, as well as turrets , shutting one of the weapons down completely. Still the remaining one now catching the larger craft began to fire wildly.

"Reroute minimal power to the forward shields and return fire on that turret." Trip commanded, now stationed back at the viewport on his ship's bridge.

"Captain, we have caught the first transport in our tractor beam." one of the tractor beam crew shouted.

Trip nodded and walked over to his intercom, pressing a button that opened a channel to his entire vessel, "This is Captain Yar on the bridge. Send a security detail to the hanger bay and prepare to detain the enemy crew."

He then turned to his tractor beam operator, "Once the first transport is secure within our hanger, focus your beam on the second."

"Aye, sir!" the operator replied, returning his focus to the first transport.

Outside, the carrier returned fire on the Hutt base, focusing on its remaining turret as the turret's laser fire collided with the carrier's shields.

Green Two and Three continued their pursuit of the second transport, though Green Three was having difficulty following the fighters. Green Two continued to rain Ion fire on the transport, hoping to hit it and disable it.

From the bridge, Trip opened a channel to Green One.

"Now that your transport is captured, move to assist your teammates. Come in from below so as to throw off the enemy's evasive maneuvers."

"Understood, sir." the pilot replied.

Green One broke off from its path and came in at the second transport from below, sending a fresh wave of laser fire at one of the starfighters protecting it.

It took no time at all for the shields on the second shuttle to fade, then leave the craft vulnerable to the ion weaponry, With a shutter the shuttles lighs and thrusters winked out as the electrical system surged and failed.

The fighters take notice of the shuttle, and regroup in a triangle formation, sweeping far out into the field at full throttle so that they could turn and make an assault run on the two nearest fighters

From the base yet one more shuttle dashed, this time two fighters before it headed straight for a spot above the carrier as its jump point. One of the fighters instantly zeroing in in on the single republic craft, the second keeping point for the shuttle.

Meanwhile the secondary defense turret bloomed into an orange rose of flames as the carriers weapons ripped though, leaving only the base itself.

"Captain, the second defense turret has been eliminated, but we have three incoming craft; two fighters and another transport vessel." the helmsman said.

"We must prevent them from getting out of the system. Send as much power as you can to the ion cannons and mass drivers without tampering with the shields and tell me when they're ready." Trip commanded from the viewport.

"Captain, the first transport is secure in the hanger. The security detail you sent is handling the crew." the tractor beam operator reported.

"Excellent. Focus your beam on the second transport now."

Trip then turned and went to the communication station in the crew pit and opened a channel to the fighter squadron.

"Green Squadron, this is the bridge. Continue to engage those uglies. We will deal with the last transport."

"Sir! Ion cannons and mass drivers are ready. Orders?" the weapons operator asked from his post.

"Fire ion cannons at the transport and the mass drivers at any defending fighter craft."

"Aye, sir."

Outside the carrier, the members of Green Squadron looped around to face their attackers in a similar triangular formation, spraying their enemy with whatever fire power they could muster.

Meanwhile, the carrier was also busy with its operations. The tractor beam was now pulling in the second craft and the ship itself was unloading ion fire at the last transport, as well as firing its mass drivers at the fighters protecting it.

Fighters howled as they drive closer to the republic squadron, weapons blazing in the headlong charge. The lead fighter of the formation pushed itself, taking much of the incoming fire found it's shielding shredded, and hull soon breached. The resulting explosion caused the secondary wings to split at the last second- each to the opposing side- not worried at the moment to count any possible Republic casualties they may have scored.

Having been readily trapped bu the carriers tractor beam, being pelted with Ions, the second enemy shuttle found itself facing a situation it could do little about. Already disabled it could only watch the fire fight about it.

Under fire and putting itself in a charge the third shuttle, and it's fighter escort at point did it's best to avoid as many incoming bolts as possible. Energy blasts washed over the canopy of the shuttle as it ducked and weaved, taking clipped shots however making ground as it's forward profile was harder to hit, and at it's speed. It was a desperate attempt, however to escape it needed to make it past the carrier.

the lead escort fighter pulled it's nose up sharply, bringing itself slightly higher than the shuttle, it's targeting scope aiming at the carriers tractor port, from the maws of it's secondary weapons port erupted twin ballistic EM burst detonators.

The bridge erupted in activity in response to recent developments.

"Captain! We've lost the tractor beam to that EM blast." the tractor beam operator shouted from his station.

"And what of the second shuttle?" Trip replied.

"It was freed a few kilometers away from the hanger." the operator replied.

"Sir, we've lost Green Three to enemy fire!" the helmsman shouted.

"Alright, I want everyone to remain calm. Shuttle Two is disabled thanks to our ion cannons. It won't be moving anytime soon. Continue ion fire at shuttle three and mass driver fire at its defense fighters." Trip commanded as calmly as he could.

He marched over to the comm unit and opened up a channel to the remaining two fighters.

"Green Squadron, wrap up this fight. Use any means necessary to kill the enemy and then head back for shuttle two and guide it to the hanger."

Outside, the starfighters formed up and prepared to attack the two remaining enemies facing them. Changing tactics, they fired their proton torpedoes, aiming to finish things quickly.

Meanwhile, the carrier continued to rain ion fire on the transport as well as mass driver fire on the fighters.

With the heavy fire turned on them the fighters were forced to scramble quickly. One banked hart to its port, cutting over the top of its wing-mate and clipping it slightly, sending its hard bank into a hard spiral. Unable to pull out in time the small craft plowed headlong into a large rock that had drifted into the flight path, blown back slightly by the force of the impact and blooming of the resulting explosion.

the second fighter of the pair managed to avoid loosing control after his partners ill fated maneuver. Little hope was left however. Two of three shuttles disabled and or captured, several fighters down, it was a moment of choices. Taking this moment, the fighter peeled hard to starboard hoping to catch the enemy craft playing with him the slip, and make a run back towards the instillation, hoping to seek refuge and hope the republic left it be.

Fighter and shuttle continued their mad dash for freedom, hoping their speed would bring them past the small capital craft before they could react to the loss of their beam weapon. This was answered as the fighter escort was speared squarely though its cockpit by a band of coloured light that belched from the carriers secondary armaments. Rocked by the explosion the shuttle found it's shields shredded by debris.

With the starfighter heading back for its base and both remaining transports disabled, the two remaining fighters of Green Squadron moved to escort both transports to the carrier's hanger bay.

On the bridge, cheers broke out as it seemed victory was now at hand. Trip could not help but smile as he readied himself to finish it.

"Now, now, don't get cocky. All power to turbolasers. Fire at that command post!" he commanded.

Outside, space lit up as red bolts of energy fire was directed mercilessly towards the Hutt outpost.

weapons fire cascaded about the command base, it's small size unable to hold out once it's shielding began to fail. Though smaller and weak, the thick plating did however provide some protection; even if only a temporary one. At the current rate the outpost could stand only a few moments more of fire before it too would find itself as little more than debris.

There was a pin point surge of radiation a few kilometers away which bloomed as two separate points seemed to form from nothing more than a string.

Sitting there above the void now sat A large Hutt frigate, and a single destroyer escort. the massive craft stayed in the distance, as if observing the situation. Re-enforcements had come, and come large. It was unclear if the outpost managed a small burst at the Republic's initial arrival, or if this was the normal patrol for the area come to check on their position. Whatever the reason , it was now clear that the potential odds have changed.

"Sir-!" one of the officers in the crew pit started to shout.

Trip, however, shot out his right hand in a gesture that told all on board to be absolutely silent.

"Communication's officer, order Green Squadron to get back to the hanger. Helmsman, I want an escape vector within five minutes. Do I make myself clear?" he said in a hoarse voice.

"Retreat....sir?" the helmsman asked.

Trip turned to the direction the voice had come from, a very serious expression covering his face.

"My duty is indeed to complete my mission, but it is also to ensure the safety of my men. I refuse to put us in a situation where certain death is the only option. The shuttles have been neutralized and the station is nothing more than dust. We've done our duty. Pull out." he snapped.

Without further questioning, operations resumed on the bridge and the ship began to move into the escape vector. Soon the fighters were also in route to the carrier.

As soon as the station gasped it's final breath before being consumed by republic force the two large craft turned to face the republic carrier, and advanced slowly. Their speed would give a few moments before they entered range.

It was time that gave the republic navigational computers time to process the data from near by hyperspace beacons. Nav com chimes indicated a calculated vector had been secured.

Lights in the deck went dark and sounds faded only to be replaced by the whirring sounds of servo motors as the simulator domes opened to a dimmed room to aid in readjusting to real light.

" Good going Ensign, your alive and losses were within the systems scale of acceptable amounts...go get yourself some rest, and return to duty while this is reviewed. " a voice said echoing about the chamber from some unseen control room. The game was over, for now.
